Go with one of the new Vauxhall Corsa's IMO, depending on the engine and trim you should be able to get one for below or around the 10k mark, especially when Vauxhall are trimming upto ú700 if you order online. Reliable car, decent mpg and low CO2 levels means you'll be saving a bit in the long term due to petrol/road tax (Think the 1.3 versions have a C02 level of around 115g/km, which means only ú35 a year for road tax)

Personally I'd buy a LOAD of second hand cars and then sell them on. I've never paid more than ú500 for a car.

This tbh, new cars you lose so much just leaving the forecourt, and most "modern" cars suck ass, go old skool and get a 2nd hand (but good runner) and restore her up! (and no not shove exhausts on it to make it sound like a 747.
HINT:.. A Metro is still a metro with a body kit and "wake the dead" exhaust. your still going to get laughed at. V8I

I go with the likes of a Vectra, Passat, Audi A4, Golf MKIV, Skoda Octavia, Mondeo
All come with great diesel engines wich will go forever and cruise along in comfort. Plenty of room too! ----

Ex-demo cars are usually a good buy. Less depreciation than new (most of that is in the first year), low mileage and you can bet that they have been well maintained! Plus you know for sure that it isn't a Friday afternoon or Monday morning model (i.e. lemon).
The only problem is that choice will be a bit limited, as will the choice of fittings.
As for model, if I was in the market right now I'd be looking at Skodas. They are now owned by VW, use VW bits, and are made to VW standards. Half the taxis in my town are Skodas, so that tells you something! The Skoda Octavia (mid-sized 4-5 seater) is probaly going to be just under your budget as an ex-demo car.

Id just get a decent 2nd hand car from a reputable dealer. You can even get some pretty nice cars with optional extras and with a little luck you'll end up with some change. Maybe even enough to pay for a decent holiday

Thanks for the replies.
The Mondeo/Vectra idea sounds good, still need space for trips to the dump etc.
No way I would buy a brand new car with the instant depreciation.

Edited by: Kappas. on 07/04/2008 00:51:45 Depending on what size of car you want...
Golf/Astra/Focus if you want a smaller car, focus has slightly better handling I feel than the Astra, but I prefer the look of the new Astra to the focus. Golfs I don't really like for some reason... maybe the boy racer image with 16" exhausts :P
A4/Vectra/Mondeo if you want a bigger car. In this day and age it usually doesnt hurt to go diesel, especially for road tax in the UK iirc. __________________

I wonder what it is like to have to consider handling... the only time I ever have to make any tight turns is when I park.

I was answering this very question myself about 3 months ago and decided to keep my scooby. If I had changed it I would have gone for one of these, about 4-5 years old: Saab 9-3 Aero Lexus IS200 Audi A3 Volvo S40
