Edited by: Tarrar Ghul on 07/04/2008 16:55:44 i want to propose the idea of a new type of freighter with only one purpose moveing fitted ships with no cargo with in the ships holds
due to rigs i and many others i am sure have found it to be really difficult to relocate without makeing ungodly ammounts of trips across long distances i would like to propose a freighter that basicly is one huge ship maintaince bay with out the benifit of loading and unloading in space and without refit no jump drive and standard freighter could be a new hull class for something new to look at in eve comments or ideas on this would be great and why it was never thought of is anyone elses guess

So you want a high sec only option for the carrier(non-combat)

Edited by: Tarrar Ghul on 07/04/2008 17:10:12 um not highsec only it can be brought into lowsec and 0.0 but like the freighter its big and luggy and cant defend its self and screams kill me like any other freighter it is a frieghter with only one peticular freight in mind and that is fitted ships, ship cant be fitted and has no rig slots its a freighter in all sence just cant move freight

A ship like this for nomads or mission runners who frequently switch agents would be wonderful. Esp if there are multiple sizes ranging from 'I need to haul around an AF or two plus a destroyer' to "I need to move a BS with a BC salvager, mining ships, and a low-sec courier'
Which, if you don't pick one of those '100% kill' agent types you really do end up having a use for mulitple ships like that.

wouldn't it be cool if this ship was an interbus ship that you pay for at a station and you get to fly the ship to the station where you want to go and then you give the ship back to the interbus?
and if you don't give it back then it cost something perday, with a HUGE fee if you lose interbuses awesome ship transport vessel.
this would keep the carrier as the main ship transporter and give carebears and traders a quick hauler for the go.

It would need to be something reasonably quick to train, or one that reuses a lot of the current transport/industrial skills. I can't see a lot of people wanting to train for 3 months just to get this, especially not if it's only really going to be for highsec, when a day is all you really need to move all the ships you're going to need from one side of high sec to the other. It is a nice idea though, I do sometimes get quite annoyed at having ships scattered about all over the place and not really having any simple way of moving them around.

Edited by: Tarrar Ghul on 08/04/2008 05:44:36 its not just restricted to high sec like the normal freighter and it could have its use to larger alliances and mercenary corps also it will be slower and more cumbersom and just as defenceless as the normal freighter.
think of the uses it can have alot more storage then a carrier for moveing ships and is way more vunerable and doesnt have the nice i instantly jump here feature.
if dare to it can be used on the back lines to bring in fitted ships for a fight but would require a squad for defence to move via lowsec or 0.0 and empire at war it will be usefull and should at minimum require the same skills as the normal freighter but i would like to see a race specific ship freighter skill or something and a new hull design and even maybe a much smaller hold on a t2 version of it with a jump drive possibly
keep in mind it shouldnt be able to scoop or jettison and it shouldnt be able to unload anywheres but a station like a normal freighter i like this idea personally and i think it would be a grand one to see in action ( and very important like the normal freighter no rig slots no fittings also and same price tag would be nice as in component cost but no cargo hold components make them ship maintence components )
anyone that likes this idea i do accept donatations as a pat on the back :)

With suitable thought to avoid exploits and other uses of the ship, I'd agree with the notion. It is an incredible pain having to move large numbers of ships around that all have a purpose (level 1 runner, level 2 runner, level 4 runner, salvager, courier, low-sec courier, PvP ships 1, 2 & 3 to name but 7 possible purposes). In addition, the present mechanics don't allow you to carry a fitted ship at all inside high-sec.
I don't mind whether it's a ship we buy for moving equipment, or a service we rent, but some accessible way to do this would be good. The obvious problems with a service are that it could be exploited to move valuable ships without risk, so perhaps a specific ship you rent and fly yourself.
From an implementation perspective, I suspect this would be quite hard to do as cargo; currently everything is handled as volumes of cargo. We'd now be asking for cargo to have types and ships to only allow certain types. Alternatively ships docked like in a carrier would work; should we prevent other peoples' ships docking? Could this be abused? Could people with said ship offer transportation services? ___ "If you can't debate using logic & fact, and at least recognise other people's point of view, don't waste time posting on forums. It only makes you look like a teenage idiot." |

I personally sell most of the ships I have and buy new ones....[little like that interbus idea] but that can't apply for people with mroe ships in use than me.
I see a lack of this feature, too...since I came back in august i changed my base of operation 6 times already everytime a great move where i would have been glad to have something like that to transport my ships |

Ok, here you go, have the perfect solution for you.
Create a new ship, that sieges in to become a anchorable item, this would be a way to do a player housing as well. One per race.
SMA half the size of a carrier.
10k cargo hold.
Can not dock with a station.
Not jump capable.
No slots(like a freighter)
when unpackage can only be accessed by the owner.
To transfer to another player must repackage.
Each player can only own one unpackaged at any time.
In siege mode is indestructable(basically a personal station). Provides no protection though to items surrounding it.
Can not be anchored on the same grid as a station or gate.
Basically its an item for you to anchor to work out of. Stores your ships, ammo and loot, but you have to make runs to a station with a another ship to sell items.
Siege mode works simular to the rorqual. Takes a few mins to siege and unsiege. Cool animation.
I would say it can be moved outside of high sec, but is at high risk if unescorted.
Would work great in 0.0 for player housing, give you something to work out of other than anchored cans, but does not offer the safety of a pos. Can be anchored around POS's, but not in the bubble.

I think this is a great idea. I relocated recently and I was very frustrated that I could not repackage my ships due to rigs. It was a long move, boring and annoying.

i love the idea recently me and few corp m8's had to relocate alot of our assets and a ship like this would of been very usefull.
me personally i have 12 ships with rigs and we were moveing 29 jumps you have any idea how much of a headache it is to move 12 ships 29 jump thats 29 jumps 1 way then back again to make the trip 28 more times :( took ungodly forever

I had an idea similar to this the other day. Like the stellar equivalent of one of those trucks that carries all the cars on them. A freighter whose cargo capacity is limited only to ships in a corporate bay is not a bad idea.

Well one, I replied to yours first, then thought to myself, self, wow, that a nice idea, its bigger than just the function your wanting. So I went ahead and decided to start a new thread.
Personally I have trouble understand why someone would stock 29 rigged ships, to me that sounds like a self inflicted wound.
This topic of what a carrier is and what a freighter is, is an old one. Ships that are rigged(unpackage ready to fly) are to be transported by carriers only. They are limited to what can be in there cargo holds to keep carriers from being used to haul better than freighters.
Freighters are only allowed to transport packaged items, so no unpackaged or rigged ships. This to keep them from competing with carriers. There was a complaint that freighters traveling in low sec and null sec were extremely vulnerable and the hops were long which is why the carrier even nerfed was a more viable option. So the Jump freighter was born.
What you seem to be asking for is just the oposite side, your wanting to carrier in high sec. Currently carriers are not allowed to high sec due to they are so overpowered for the enviroment.
There have been posts of an inter bus(a courier service for items in high sec) this maybe an option for you.
Unless you get a carrier with no teeth(zero to little combat) I have a feeling your not going to be able to get this to pass.
On a personal note, you may want to look again at how you are playing the game, If your doing long jumps, 30 plus, chances are both ends are near low sec. So truly you only need to move your ships the couple of jumps to low sec, courier contract them to a carrier, pick them up at the other end in low sec, jump a couple of jumps to new home. Or Sell your ships on contract, and rebuild at the other end. Ships are disposable. Low sec and null sec are not the devil. Not everything in eve is to be easy or should it be.

Just let us put a fitted and rigged ship into a freighter, assembled ships are already massive compared to their packaged version so we are paying for the privelige.

Edited by: Superstar Tradesman on 12/04/2008 06:20:46 thera i have seen your posts many times and wonder why it is such a issue to you about this idea it will in no way harm the carrier and the carrier is really hard to catch going from station to station with ships in it
this idea i like as it suggests a ship that is way more vulnerable and cant jump it suggests a ship that you spend a bil or more on and pack with billions in goodies that could be easily ganked by me or my friends i like this idea as freighters are fun to kill killing a ship hauler would be even more fun to watch all the ships pop out personally i feel this is something really needed especially for corporations or alliances relocateing to a new hq or something it has only one purpose like the freighter to move stuff but it does it with combat ready ships that cant be dropped at a pos or only in a station as i said before tarrar your idea has my vote man and i think its a great one but im not giving you a donation for it unless it successful lmao but i must admit that was cute i think peeps should comment positivily on this idea or not at all personally ---------Signature Start---------- Yes I realise I have a man's name |

Due to the nature of assembled ships being, well, bloody huge, the only way to have this work and keep the ship you suggest sub-capital class would be to make it a kind of tug boat. The appearance of it would be a ship a little smaller than a Badger, but with very large engines and a vaguely skeletal look. The ships you want to transport get dragged along behind in a chain, sort of like current tractor beams work, but lined up instead of bunched together.
This tugging ability would be integral to the ship, and would not require fitting, though perhaps modules to increase capacity could be introduced (or better, existing ones utilised). I can see thrust modules like ABs being dual purposed like this, adding extra thrust to enhance the amount of mass you can tow at a given speed.
Negating the ability for pods to jump into these towed ships would probably be necessary, and the idea as a whole fits with RP, since be honest, nothing short of a capital freighter can carry a fully built BS or even a BC internally. Too many lumpy bits. While it might feel like your ships are unprotected, they're no less so than when you're hauling anything; anyone with a cargo scanner can see what freight you're carrying even when it's in a cargo bay, so this is no real detriment, and if somebody really wants your stuff, they'll try and take it whatever.
I need to think some more about details, like 'can individual ships you're towing be attacked like this' and whether they can be dropped off in space so that the tug really could act like a high-sec carrier/mom, with pilots making the transfer in space via ejecting then entering the new ships. ______________________________________

This is actually a really great idea. I doubt it would work, but just imagine the look of it in premium graphics. It would be a spaceship-nerds wet dream.
But to be honest i don't see that happening with current technology in Eve.
So, maybe capital just like a freighter would be better, being able to carry huge loads of fitted bs (ten or more). And, just like the freighter, it would have no jumpdrive. A tier 2 freighter so to say. I bet the art department would have fun with them, i can imagine those huge ships with several maintenance bays, blinking lights and stuff..

Dont like the towing idea, not useful for more than one ship.
Needs to be a tier 2 (not t2) freighter, about 3-5k m3 cargo, and a 5mil m3 ship maintainance array. No corp hangar array, and no refitting ability (just SMA ability to hold rigged and insured assembled ships.) SMAs can be limited in shiptype now (i.e. the rorquals which only holds mining and indies), so limit them to no cap ships (no problem with beating the 1m m3 limit). 5m m3 is enough for 10 bs which is plenty enough to carry around.
25% less HP than a tier 1 freighter, 50% more build cost, nice new models. No new coding required (SMAs already exist on ships, already can be limited to shiptypes, already cant take non-ships, and cant take ships with non-ammo/script/booster/crystal/cap charge items in cargo). There's no risk to creatign super haulers, just an easy way for corps to relocate and a nice new target for their enemies. The introduction of rigs has made this necessary. |
