How about a ship that is entirely dedicated to smartbombs. I will let you all discuss what type of ship it could be, but it should at least be able to use medium or large bombs.
Maybe it could be a BC that had CPU and PG bonused to smartbombs that allow it to sue larges.
Its bonuses to smart bombs can be all sorts of stuff, like less cap per use and more damage.
Also I think this ship should be really fast, I mean REALLY fast, like almost inty fast, but have no turret slots, it can only be equipped with non-turret/missile launcher things.
What I think this would be good for is anti-frigate/drone.
Like it? Don't like it? Something to add? |

I believe we have the Titans as a model of how that can be abused...
But to assist your idea, this would clean up lag a bit if drones and fighters were removed by these efficient ships.
How much fire should these ships be able to withstand? Seeing as a squad of these mismanaged(built in balancing) would quickly end their 'kamikaze' activities. Too little and the frigs/drones will bring them down very quickly, too much, and you have Goonfleet's new ship standard...
Unfortunately, this can only be used offensively, as defending a friendly primary from drones, will end in friendly fire. And this might intrude on ECM ships very heavily, nanoships with no tracking issues x5 vs a fully ECM-fit Scorpion/Rook/Falcon...

What I am imagine is something that could fly around to people really fast and just run through enemy lines and bomb them, some may say that this is unbalanced because you could just orbit an enemy and they can't do a thing about it but it isn't because for smart bombs to work you need to be within web range.

dont know,i think its just a weird idea,even tho i like it i dont support that it should be inty-fast but making a destroyer and BC for each race with bonuses for this would seem appropriate,with some sort of speed bonus for them sometimes you just need to get rid of dronz and fightaz

I'm thinking a ramming type ship. So big engines for decent speed for its size, but low turning. No drone bay because the smartbombs would just kill your drones. Decent tank so it can survive the travel to the target. No turret or missile hardpoints, since that isn't what this ship is meant to do.
Naturally give bonuses to smartbombs. Another possible bonus would be a % chance (checked each cycle) for webbers targeting the ship to fail.

Honestly the only thing "wrong" with smartbombs now is that their ranges are too short. Create a skill that will give 20% per level range bonus on smartbombs and they will become very useful, both for pve and pvp. They would still be fitting hogs and cap hogs, but with the extremely short ranges they have now, anything other than a large officer or faction smartbomb just doesn't have the range to do much at all for any PVPer or even any PVE'er who is doing lvl 3 or lvl 4 missions.
Sure some drones and small frigates close to inside 5km in lvl 3 and lvl 4 missions, but not many. Almost everything orbits at 6km+
Destroying large masses of walls and structures inside missions with smartbombs is about their only use in lvl 3's and 4's, but since mission walls and structures rarely drop anything worthwhile...
Doubling the range of all smartbombs will make smartbombs a useful counter to warp scrambling and jamming. Unspecialized ships with low end jamming and scrambling gear would than actually be unsure if they can stay out of range of a smartbomb. A 20km (10km currently) range officer smartbomb might be very rare, but they do exist. PVP players with high end faction scramblers and ships would still be able to tackle without serious concern about smartbombs, as with lvl 5 in the smartbomb range skill, the 100% bonus will still only give a maximal range of 20ish km for a smartbomb module that probably runs 500 mill at the least. Well, I've said my piece - wait, is that Veldspar over there? Woot! |

Why not add a role bonus that lets destroyers use large smart bombs?
Role Bonus: 15% reduction in cpu, powergrid, and capacitor usage per lvl.
These ships are made of glass, so easy to kill. This would help break up blobs.

*nods* this would probably be a better ship bonus then fitting large bombs on a medium class hull.
In general I really like this idea. Smartbombs are the only weapon system that doesn't have SOME ship with bonuses for it. A very step headed red child of the killamajigs.

I was going to crticize the op but I ended up liking this particular suggestion since it fits well with destroyer ships. If they are meant to be anti-frigate being anti drone as well wouldn't be so bad.
Still I would say this new attribute should be reserved for a tier 2 or tech 2 version that can reduce cpu/grid and extend the range. Be mindful of your surroundings. |

so the multiple ideas floating around point to a ship that really isn't quite that fast, but can equip a lot of bombs.
People say that this should be for the destroyer.
Here is my idea taking this into account:
A destroyer that can go pretty fast but has bad maneuverability, has a bonus to PG/CPU/capacitor for smartbombs that allow it to equip larges, has a destroyer level tank but when I say fast I mean fast, as in charge up at ridiculous speeds but can't turn worth #%#@. If it wanted to orbit something at top speed then it would have to be at least 30km away
It would have a range bonus that if you get the skill to level 5 it would be 100% bonus,
It would also have a pretty nice cap, and enough low/mid slots to be able to fit cap upgrades(but not too many)
Is this what people are looking for?

Yes, a range bonus to smartbombs would be much better than a % chance for hostile web failure.
Another idea to consider is giving the ship a long targeting range so that, if it gets over 150km away, it can do tactical warps towards the enemies. Did it drop its lock because it is running away, or is it about to land right on top of you ?
Though if that happens, should it be allowed to tackle, or should it get some penalties to webs and/or scrams ?

A while back I was thinking about a signature spoofing module that made your ship looks like something else, such as another players ship or an asteroid. Imagine pretending to be an asteroid when an enemy miner shows up, then slowly drifting towards them (did that roid move, or am I seeing things ?) and setting off your smartbombs.
So it's not veld, it's the smartbomb ship.

I take it you dont like minmatar/amarr... a ship with a sb range bonus seems nice but if u r gonna do it give it to all, minmatar seem to be completely screwed by the above idea.

Difficulty to use weapons exist in real life. Close air support with a 2000lb bomb without killing your own guys is not easy. Even with massive amounts of training for US pilots, bombing the wrong thing (Chinese Embassy, Canadian Soldiers, Wedding Festivials, etc) is not unheard of.

what I was originally thinking is a ship that uses smartbombs, has bonuses to them so it can ahve extra damage, maybe ability to not hurt allies (cause they are SMARTbombs, and can pick who to blast) (maybe some backstory on how shields get deployed on certain areas of the explosion so it shields allies?) and able to fit larges but NO RANGE BONUS. in stead of a range bonus it would have a really good max speed, but a debonus where it gets hit REALLY hard by webs. so they could orbit an enemy at 5km away at 5km a second but if webbed by the most basic web it starts going 10m/s.

that is why this ship is so fast, it can fly up REALLY close to somebody quickly and release all hell. this isn't supposed to be a mission-runner ship, it is a small-gang ship/fleet ship tat goes in and kills everything in a small area.

i didn't see it as a smartbomb a long time ship.
i would propose the thorax mwd bonus and a range increase. this would let you mwd up to them and fire all you could fit. then get popped yourself :D

yeah, forgot about that.
How about it has a bonus of 100% reduction of cap when using MWDs but a penalty of getting hit by webs 99% harder.

I don't like the MWD idea. Sorry, but if this is gonna be a Smartbomb ship, give it Smartbomb bonuses. Let your skills and mods figure out the rest.

no fittings bonus and cap reduction for use bonus so it could alpha all of them maybe twice before it was completely out of capacitor would be fine. if it was like a destroyer class and had 8 high slots then 16 pulses of large mwd and then it is completely wasted would be fine with me.
it would be great for attacking hostile fighter blobs. My biggest concern at this point would be it being used too much for suicide ganking. high alphas can be unbalancing. 7 large smartbomb with cloaks fitted would be awesome stealth destroyers though :D

I don't understand the need for a special ship type at all. Plenty of Cruisers can be fit with a good amount of Smart Bombs and speed. I have a Hyperion (Gallente Tier 3 bs) with 8 Large Smartbombs that is intended for Fighter Blobs and Pos Defense. I call it 'Donut of Destruction' - A Spaced Invaders reference for fans of that old film.
Insurance easily covers the ship, so its kinda disposable. Fleet ops restrict its use, so it is a specality ship already. Its all T1.
So can you please explain why you need a seperate ship class just to do this?
