Lies, it is still a despotism applied by several individuals changing roles depending upon their state of conciousness.
Yes it is true.

I am continually distressed how many of my fellow Americans refuse to believe that it's not just us and the Ancient Greeks.
Hell, Athens' democracy lasted what, 75 years? I tell them Iceland, look it up and they go "Oh, that huge island right next to Canada. Isn't that owned by France or something?"
At that point I give up.
Fakedit: 'Cause I can't remember who owns it either.
Realedit: forgot a very important "not" in there.

Yeah, we don't like to mention that in school for some reason.
But we do point out the enlightened death sentence of Socrates for corrupting children through education.

I know what you mean, it is sad that some of us forget that the ideas on which our democracy was founded originated and developed aboard long before the European colonization of this continent.

Looks like someone Forgot about referendoms and primaries in civics class. Calling America a repulic on the whole is like saying china is a republic because they call it the peoples republic of China doesn't mean it actually is.

uhh Demorcracy is where the people vote. Republic is where representatives vote on behalf of the people. The US is more of a republic then a democracy so he's right.
P.S. My only regret to this great achievement is we didn't have to bomb anyone to do it. _______________

Referendums and primaries only happen in certain places. Indiana does not have referendums, for example, and several states hold caucuses instead of primaries, which means everyone goes into corners depending on who they support.Which is voting, except no hanging chads. Except for when Chad forgets to zip up after using the urinal. Then he's charged with public indecency and listed as a sex offender. Poor Chad.

uhh Demorcracy is where the people vote. Republic is where representatives vote on behalf of the people. Technically speaking the US is a republic rather then a democracy so he's right.

Your oversimplifying to the point of a false premise What you stated is a representative democracy and you were thinking of a Direct Democracy as democracy which is something we do in fact do it's called a referendum.

Edited by: Fredior Khan''Sebies on 06/05/2008 04:02:20 I would comment on the definition of Republic with discourse on Plenary Power and ex parte Crow Dog, but that would take about an hour to type out the reason the US isn't really a Republic by the bolded definition above and still appear obscure and argumentative. Although I truly question the validity of calling the US a Republic post-1861.
Edit: And that is as an American citizen, mind you. I would LOVE for us to BE a republic, but I don't think that geopolitics allow for such nonsense. If you don't have rule by force, someone else will have the force to rule. Citizens are not allowed to overthrow their government without at least tacit support of other nations, removing the notion of authority resting in the hands of citizens.

Sorry, the US isn't a democracy...
I take democracy to mean (at least) having the direct right by the people to dictate who runs the country...
The US has electoral colleges and primaries... neither of which are fundamentally democratic in any way
I'm not saying it doesn't work the same overall, but it's not the same as 'true' democracies...

I think most of our electorate doesn't have a friggin clue. The sycophantic US mainstream media makes matters much worse with their hyperbole, manufactured issues, disinformation, distractions, lack of government oversight, and a complete omission of anything relevant to our daily lives.
Mix that with general apathy, ignorance, and a fundamental lack of critical thinking skills and we get our current US political landscape.
REMEMBER! Don't forget to put on your American flag lapel pin and deny evolution. Otherwise you might be another freedom hater...
