*Troll warning*
Cant belive anyone hasnt quoted this one yet:
"Ankh-Morpork had dallied with many forms of government and had ended up with that form of democracy known as One Man, One Vote. The Patrician was the Man; he had the Vote."
-- Discworld politics explained (Terry Pratchett, Mort)
Not considering how the ONE representative came into office or how long he stay in office, this is actually a very good example of a Republic... one representative vote on behalf of all the people

This thread is pure **** stirring.
It has nothing to do with democracy, as that is not the point of the thread.
It has nothing to do with how long various democratic bodies have existed, as that is not is the point of the thread.
It has nothing to do with how much the U.S. contributed to the development of modern democracy, as that is not the point of the thread.....
Its just some bigots trying to feel superior with a straw man beat down, if need be with some fake "american" posts for more straw.....
Play nice while you butcher each other.

My house is older than that, so I would hypothesize that it invented democracy.

Posting in epic political troll thread, woohoo!
While I realise that the OP was trying to start a debate about his fellow countrymen being mindless zombies, I fail to see the point about discussing the subject of his trolling.
Shouldn't we instead be focusing on the threats against the modern western democracies, or should we just sit back, blindly trust our govenrments, and put all blame on some small underdeveloped country in the Middle East?
Mods, please move this thread to Out of pod experience, please!

I see a lot of debates about Democracy and a Republic... hmm
Democratic Republic?
As to those who finds Americans thinking they founded Democracy: yea, that is pretty stupid. We Americans did not found democracy, however for some reason we seem to think we're the best democracy and everyone else should be it too.
If the world was a big party - George W. Bush would be standing in one corner sweet talking and/or bribing, and/or invading other country's to come do democracy stuff with him - while Putin is on the other side of his room with his few remaining friends gritting there teeth gripping very tightly on a ICBM launch control mechanism.
To put it simply: America did not found democracy, but they preach it a lot; just like how the Jehovah Witness WON'T LEAVE YOUR YARD. ____________________

Please, elaborate! How can a bunch of countries ditching human rights be a threat to the democratic system of <insert favorite western democracy here>? It's worth noting that the Universal declaration of isn't wholly ratified by many western countries.
Think about it; whom or what has the power and the motivation to revoke the civil rights that you take for granted? The answer is closer, and more worrying than you think. ____________________ Honk if you think that I'm a n00b Lance fighter > Honk. |

Because those rights are universal and applies to all countries. Did you read the entire article?

Why, because you say so? I trust my government, I enjoy freedoms most people on this planet does not. It is better to die for the emperor than to live for yourself. |

Interesting tidbit for your consideration. The first democratic groups of Europeans in the new world were the crews of pirate ships. Despite the popular image of the pirate captain who kept his crew in line through fear and intimidation, pirate captains were chosen by the company at large, and given abseloute authority only during periods of combat, being pursued or in pursuit. At all other times a captains authority was subject to the approval of the crew at large. |
