You might not like it, but here it is:
We are simply the planet Earth's reproductive organ. We are extremely complex, but follow the same basic principle of most reproductive sytems; spread, fertilise, grow, repeat.
A plant has seeds, a planet has sentient autonomous lifeforms.
Now, we may have free will, but only to a certain degree. We are almost unrealistically compelled to visit the stars! "The grass is always greener".
In my opinion our urge to colonise other planets, and our obsesssion with space travel back up my hypothesis that we are merely 'seeds'. We have no reason to leave, we haven't even any reason to evolve - we have everything we need right here.
But we are driven to find new potential homes, and by no more than our fear that one day humanity might die out! Oh noes! This will not have any effect on any of us individually, for we will have died already.
It's human nature to want to go to the stars. But why? Because it is our purpose, our destiny, our "meaning of life".
We are a complex, well-designed (but as of yet unfinished) reproductive tool which our planet and home will eventually use to fertilise other planets.
This will happen when our intelligence has reached a level at which we can competently travel between star systems. Although, competence isn't even necessarily that essential. If one man and one woman arrive on a new world relatively intact - well thats all you need for a new race! Voila, we now have a new, living world. Ever wondered why we live in perfect symbiance with so many single-celled organisms? We will act as a delivery system for them.
It would also be relatively safe to assume that this man and woman are prime examples of the best our population has to offer at the time - the fittest, most intelligent and motivated.
Yes Akita T, we are the unavoidable conclusion of infinitesimal probability combined with a nearly infinite pool of possibilities, but that's the big picture. Rather, I would say, our planet and position is that unavoidable conclusion - we are what was allowed to come into existence because of our circumstances.
We are indeed, as I think you imply, merely a mathematical necessity, a product of a universe with infinite possibilities - but on a more personal level, and to answer the age old question "What is my purpose?", I believe it is simply to be the best we can be, choose the best mate, and create little versions of ourselves!
In this way, we can fulfil our purpose by playing our individual roles in the ongoing trial and error design process that is the Earth's courtship of it's fellow planets.
And, um, that is my opinion...

I usually don't give a damn about these kind of topics, as I have to put up with all kind of random nonsense people spew out, but I have to post here just because my view was pretty much summarized there.

Heh. I dont think it really makes a difference. When i look at all the finely balanced numbers that explain why life is possible on earth, or why we can see total eclipses of our sun and so on and so forth...
i begin to feel there is no real difference between the deity of your choice and "coincidence".
the synergetic effects of all those coincidences are breathtakingly beautiful, so unbelieveably pretty, that you could call it a religious experience when you notice it.
Once i read humans have a strong urge to know where they come from, why they are and where they are going. i believe i have answered this for me, and i believe if i told you, even if i was completely right (lulz) it wouldnt make any difference, since you need to produce your satori yourself.
but for the sake of the thread:
i think the meaning of life is to exist. we're just here to notice the dead matter that builds our playing field. everything from there comes down to choice, i believe.

Could be the meaning of life is to find the answer to that very question, it's certainly something many people feel compelled to try at least once in their lives.

a better question is why do ppl insist there must be some great meaning to it all?
why is it heresy to think that we just 'are'? I think its much more healthy to think that way than to fall into some big logical fallacy that insecure ppl have dreamed up since the dawn of man.
Because we haven't actually met anyone more developed than us (god included) we think we are so much more special than our pet dogs or the tree in our yard? that all of life is so precious and amazing, but that the rest of the universe is dull and empty? I say it's all equally amazing, and w/o any secret high falutin' meaning.
Does a living cell have meaning where a star or a rock doesn't? You think therefore you are? If you dont think, you still are, you just dont realize it :P
i cant answer that cliche question because the question is a crock of bull.
i can explain the question however. everyone wants to think life and themselves are so special because they are scared the truth is that they aren't.

The reason we think of these things is the same reason we look up at the stars, because we can and is something that seems impossible to figure out.
I believe since we have conscious thought we are compelled to think of the future/past/sky/meaning of life because its just something to ponder.
