I've been watching the "current user online" (CUO) graph for a while now [->ALLTIME], and last weeks it doesn't look good. Seems like after a more or less constant growth over 5 years the CUO-number didn't increase since the beginning of the year. In the last 2 months it constantly decreased - the largest decrease so far in 5 years. And dosn't look like the decrease is going to stop, i think it will get even worse after next week (with the release of another heavyweight mmo).
So what's the reason behind it ? My personal guess is that suicide-ganking is taking it's toll, but that's only an opinion, based on small-scale observation.
Others have been blaming the weather (high temperatures = less people staying at home in front of the pc), but if you look at spring/summer 2007, there wasn't such a decrease, and in 2006 the CUO-number had a solid growth during that time period, so the weather can't be the only reason for such a negative effect.
What else can be the reason ? And what can we expect after 20/23.5 ?
I hope the devblog on thursday and the testserver-event on 24.5. will show, that Faction Warfare is going to be as good as everyone expects it to be and will get people back to EVE. Would be sad to see the CUO-development of the last 2 months becoming a longterm-trend, initiating the dawn of EVE.

Saturation of the playerbase coupled with people bieng busy with exams and wrapping up projects at work, before the summer holiday.
It's fairly common, in my experience, that here around summertime, that eve is extremely boring, in terms of how many are online.

It can be a great mix of things.
If you look at the activity levels each-year, there is a pattern which is correspondent to school and work schedules. Work schedules may be effecting things largely right now.
The economy in the world may also be a major contributor, in the US in particular. It's possible a lot of American players are being forced to work more because of gas prices and especially food costs, the cost to live has gone up so much in the US compared to what it was before.
The economy is also having a really bad impact on housing; I have a friend of the family temporarily staying in my house as I speak because he went broke, he used to be involved in that line of work, thought while he had other problems with his family going on, it was the economy that allowed him to go over the edge in a time of his life he normally would of worked his way through.
A new expansion is upcoming and grade-schools will be going into vacation mode soon. You can expect to see online populations going back up to a degree, though it may not be very sharp due to work schedules and economy though. ____________________

Edited by: cal nereus on 14/05/2008 04:48:52 What's the other heavyweight MMO?
There's been a lot of turbulence in some parts of 0.0 lately, and two major powerhouses (Triumvirate and Mercenary Coalition) have called it quits. Many other alliances are feeling the effects of a shift in Eve's balance of power.
'Course, in-game reasons can explain only so much. RL stuff is probably accounting for a big portion too.
For anyone going to a semester-system college in the United States, now is probably the time to be studying for final exams.
And as others mentioned, the economy in both Europe and the United States isn't fairing well. I assume many players are consolidating their characters to less accounts (maybe even just one) to save money. 3 month's subscription is roughly equal to one stop at the gas station, and gas prices are murder now.
Still, I can't account for the steady decrease over the last two months. As you mentioned before, the same time period last year didn't see this decrease. Growth is determined both by numbers of players not playing as much and also by how many new players join the game. It would be interesting to compare how many new players are joining the game now as opposed to exactly one year ago. ---

These posts come up every single year for as long I have been here now, which is close to 3 years. Each time the numbes have fallen near summer time, only to rise when authumn approaches.
Also, I have seen the number arises later now, seeing like 34k+ people online like at 12am at night gmt (norwegian) time. As said. people want to stay outdoors. I know I do.

This is a typical slow period. It is generally slow around finals.
However as some other posters pointed out there could be mitigating circumstances which is making the problem more pronounced.
TRI and MC collapse is probably causing some to take a break, some of them will return I'm sure, others may not.
As pointed out also especially in the US food/gas prices have risen greatly since the start of the year and it might be that those who typically don't have much money are finding it hard to pay for subscriptions. (This could mean we'll not see some of these college students return).
EVE also has been out for 5 years. The stream of new people into the game has been sputtering for some time. New accounts that stay more than 90 days seem to be rarer these days as well.
Overall EVE might be passing into its mid life crises, though it'll take several months for us to see. If higher food/gas prices are the culprit you'll see a drop off in all MMOs though and not just EVE.

R.I.P. EVE I guess. You are right, this is 100% because of suicide ganking, that is what has killed EVE. I wonder if they will give us a discount to play Age of Conan or something, I mean what will we do all day now that EVE is dead?

I don't think it'll be the end of EVE, however if the economic woes continue it could mean a downturn.
Personally I think CCP is putting most of their effort into developing WoD hence the lack of communication after years of good communication we've had recently. (Though we are promised dev blogs for Empyrean age soon).

what did you exspect? i mean seriously...
people complain about something for month upon month and the answer they get it "go fck yourself and leave the game if you don't like it!"...
with such an attitude towards your playerbase it is only a matter of time before people give up and say "fck this".
and as you say there are comming a LOT of heavy mmo's out these next couple of month so a lot of people will be changing, and it will get even worse in around 3-4 month where there are a few "must try" mmo's comming out.
and with there attitude and "we don't give a ****, you should be able to harash people in eve as much as you see fit" it ain't many gamers besides the people doing the harasment that will be hanging around (sure the subscribtions will stay a while due to the SP system, but if the subscription is cancelled it means that it is final and people have found something where they actually care for the wishes of the players and not for the wishes of a few griefers who do nothing but detroy the fun for a LOT of players and annoy whoever comes by. Umm what are you smoking cause I want some. Last I checked the goons have twice as much space as BoB. Also they are the only ones in the entire game with enough balls to take on an alliance with 12+ titans and the most capitals in the entire game.
So please join the bandwagon about which it seems you know nothing about.

Edited by: Tharukan Desm''ar on 14/05/2008 06:49:08 As others have said Ill put part of it on final year exams cropping up. Plus its generally a busy part of the year with summer about to kick into gear. Think your worrying too much though OP. Real life usually is the biggest cause for these things in most MMO's.
That or theres Age of Conan that just came out and has a big following. Plus i think star gate worlds is coming up to. Late this year and next is going to see a lot of new MMO games come out.

Looking at those graphs it seems that it's more than just the summer/holiday woes, the decline is steeper and is lasting for longer than in the previous summers. I guess there are a number of reasons for it;
- new MMO's coming out (personally I'm waiting for AoC) - RL economic issues like the US housemarket crash, cost of living (not only in the US), the 'recession feeling' - people getting bored with the game - people feeling that the game isn't going in the direction they want - members of big powerblocks who lose the urge to play since their goals won't be achieved - lots of people closing their 3nd/4rd/5th account as they figured they didn't use them as much after the power of 2 surge
Again, the decline is much more than just "it's hot outside and we got exams". Does that mean the end of EVE? ofcourse not but laughing it away is just as stupid.

Don't forget that with the launch of Trinity and the Premium Client (not to mention greater marketing through steam) there has likely been a lot of people simply giving the game a few months trial and then deciding that its not for them.
I do however, know several people who were introduced to the game in this way and are planning to stay.
