Good blog Serathu. You guys are doing a good job with keeping new articles appearing in game all the time. __________________

One thing that I dislike about the player news is the combination of real stories with RP stories. I think it would be great if each account had the option to select one, the other, or both as the feed it shows during the login screen.
Further, I think that there should be a separate in-game-browser site specifically related to news. A new design that is custom for the news page with images and links to videos that can be watched out of game. Maybe this already exists but I find the ingame site to have a rather uninspired interface, or at least outdated.

Quote: This blog was meant to go out some time ago but due to a Ginger being busier than a stag in rutting season it hasnĘt. Now however...
Does this mean that the Ginger rutting season is over?
Anyways, because this was released on the same day as a blog on Faction Warefare, I expect that future references to IC will still be followed by "Who are they?", but thanks for the blog all the same.

you probably shouldn't have released a factional warfare blog an hour after this
sounds like a good idea though. especially with the alliance board being full of messages that lack significant content. Hi how are you

I think the biggest "perk" is having your writing exposed to an audience of over 200,000 players, with your (volunteer) name at the top. It's quite a buzz to see the article you've written appear on the login screen for all to see.
Aside from that, we occasionally use Polaris Frigates as part of our work which is probably the hardware to which you refer. Our reporters often get the chance to interview some particularly famous names in EVE and it's a wonderful way of getting involved in parts of the universe that you might not necessarily be able to with your player character.
All rather cool things, I hope you agree.

I find it really weak that so little is done to make the in-character news accessible in-game. It's bad enough that these new pictures are being added and not viewable in-game, which we know it completely possible. Now there is talk of audio and video which we all can be damn sure isn't going to be.
Reading the news of out the game is fine and I'm sure many people do it that way for many reasons. However, I think for this type of news to really be powerful as a part of the universe it needs to be the kind of thing that the pilots of the EVE Universe find themselves drawn to WHILE in the Universe

You raise a good point here which is one that we discussed a lot whilst preparing to put images into articles. We'd love to have a situation where images are more seamlessly integrated into the interface but we're limited by the capabilities of the in-game browser and the size of the news feeds on the login screen.
We've done our best to accommodate this with the previews in articles and the warning about opening the full size image in an out of game browser but we can't do much more than this right now. Video and audio are long-term goals of ours but we're a while off that right now; how these are integrated remains to be seen.
You do raise a valid point though and it's one that we're very aware of and won't forget as we seek to develop our output further.

The ingame browser is really in the need of an extensive overhaul, especially if it's going to be used for the Evelopedia in the future. Going to be a painful experience to read the Evelopedia with the ingame browser in its current form. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

I realize there are size constraints to the news section but the in-game browser is capable of displaying larger images. It seems like it would be relatively easy to craft an in-game browser-aware page that could simply redirect to a new page with larger image with a back link.
It is true that that solution would not give you an easy way to do the flash magic seen out of game that allows you to see a group of pictures but that might be better. The last couple of batches of pictures seem to be just a bunch of slightly different angles of a scene. I think what might have a greater emotional impact would be something similar to a real newspaper where they basically give you one good shot that exhibits what the story is about. I realize it might be difficult to get good angles or lighting for some things but I think one really powerful image is worth way more than a handful of ones that looks like forensic coverage. Even if it had to be photoshopped a bit to look presentable. "Lead, follow, or get the #@$@#$ out of the way" |
