"The strength of an Army lies in strict discipline and undeviating obedience to its officers." ~ Thucydides
And what would Empyrean Age be without ranks anyway? Probably a bit chaotic, though has there ever been any wars without chaos anyway? Ginger explains the process from idea to reality, and where most work went on this part of the Factional Warfare feature, which may be a bit surprising. This is the third blog in our Empyrean Age series: Empyrean Age and all that - Ranks, by Ginger.

Questions:- 1. Is the first rank image (one with the shield) meant for Gallente rank 0? 2. Why do Matari and Amarr rank 1 have the coolest images? 3. Will the other nine ranks for each militia have a different image?

Good read Ginger, I'm liking it so far.
Question tho, the rank symbols will be a build off the last rank for each or completely new? ie: additional stripe or wing for each rank?
Im really excited for FW to come out, even if i don't join. think of the markets and the trit prices. This is obviously y the cap was removed, correct?

I have a nagging suspicion that if there is any per-player-kill reward (standing gain, etc.), that it will be partially based on the rank of that player. |

I'm not sure but, I recall from the live dev blog that it was stated that killing navy npcs will still have the same effect on standings. It could be that killing militia players won't have that effect, but I doubt it. *** Si non adjuvas, noces (If you're not helping, you're hurting)

Well, let's look at the "troubling" quote:
Originally by: CCP Ginger In future expansions of Factional Warfare we are going to look at linking additional functionality and rewards into ranks like (and these are not promises, just current ideas) tying them into dungeons in space and adding additional equipment and ships to the loyalty store that will only be available at certain ranks.
It's hard to interpret what this means. Saying "only be available at certain ranks" could mean they can only be obtained from the store at certain ranks, but it could also imply they can only be used at certain ranks.
He also states "additional functionality", which could imply skills or other bonuses. And "tying them into dungeons in space" could imply locking some dungeons based on rank.
Now I know he said these are just "thoughts", and nothing that has been actually implemented yet, but it is troubling. It appears that these thoughts are demonstrating a movement towards a more traditional MMO model. Militia standings are experience points, ranks are levels. Certain equipment is only available to certain ranks, maybe even certain abilities. Areas are locked off if you aren't high enough rank. It's just a troubling train of thought.
I would rather make a little noise now, before they become reality, than wait until they are deployed on SiSi ready for deployment. ;)

Grid,
first, thanks for the reasoned reply. second, at this point, agreed, all we have is guesswork. I would say however, that based on past additions of similar kind to the LP store such as the different implants, and (admittedly only to date) the only controlling factor for usage being skills and training time, which in itself has been a more than adequate method of restricting access.
my guess is that we are far more likely to see access and ISK (cost) restrictions rather than use restrictions.

That was a fun behind the scenes look at how you got to ranks and what you might do with them in the future.
However as to reduce whinage... here is my simple idea that is so simple and yet brilliant!... that if at least one dev doesn't let the idea something must be wrong with me
Because as much as I personally like the idea of unlocking better equipment and such players won't like it because it's more "standard"
ok right this is turning into a rant :P
Mothermoons awesome idea for ranks!
-discounted items in the LP store with bigger discounts the higher your rank
-greater mission rewards
There is more but this is simple and a possible to change for before it goes live on TQ?
you could also have gates that require rank, maybe custom paint jobs?
I don't think players will mind discounts in the LP store and fluff like paint jobs or such. just a thought :P
maybe also less tax on gates?
other stuff
another long rant, sorry :P

well its not exactly EVE WoW ed, its still an open almost anything goes sandbox
But adding any functionality that gives a Faction PvPer any advantage over a non faction player, in any way no mater how seemingly trivial, is going to be bad for 0.0 Aliances, because suddenly the now disadvantaged aliance players get to decide if they play gimped compared to the players who put in the faction grind to get the beni.

FW good, ranks - so so.. but items for ranks... not fun.
It would be better to have race or militia emblem on you ship when you achieve requared rank. low rank - one emblem, mid rank - two emblems, high rank - three emblems. It should'n be dificul to add such thing in ships painting schemes.

Edited by: Ishina Fel on 23/05/2008 06:47:40 I agree with the overall sentiment that there shouldn't be too much based off the ranks. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
I'd much rather see discounts on the LP store instead of rank-limited items, as was previously suggested. With that system, you already have a sort of rank limit: people without the necessary rank have to pay more LP, which means they get less other stuff, and have to work longer for the same stuff.
Rank-limited dungeons are just... no. EVE is a universe where everyone can go everywhere - as long as they accept that they might get shot for trying. Limiting gates to certain ships is already intruding on that freedom, but I can see how it can be necessary to avoid exploitation in complexes and missions, and it has a semi-acceptable ingame explanation. A rank limit, on the other hand, would serve no purpose other than force people to grind standings, which is bad, bad, bad!
I'm sure there can be several rewards for holding a high rank that don't lock away content from other players. Please avoid the pitfalls of Blizzard's honor system (one of the most fundamentally flawed design ideas in their otherwise quite successful game).
After all, factional warfare is supposed to be a stepping stone to 0.0 space, a sub-mechanic of the game teaching people how to PvP and enjoy it. The worst thing you can do is offer people something they cannot get anywhere else: that way, your stepping stone becomes an endgame in itself, and will draw people AWAY from 0.0 instead of encouraging them to take it out there.

Are the 0.0 Alliances gimped because they're out in 0.0 defending their space rather than grinding agents to get CNR's? No, they're not. They use the superior earning power of 0.0 to just buy up whatever faction stuff they need. Which in turn generates a market for the people that earn these things to sell them to.
I agree that something silly like "+1% damage per militia rank" would be undesirable, but I really don't think that's what they're saying.
Originally by: Ishina Fel Rank-limited dungeons are just... no. EVE is a universe where everyone can go everywhere - as long as they accept that they might get shot for trying.
Indeed, I would be skeptical about locking out the dungeon completely. But having advantageous things in the dungeon that higher rank players can unlock could work - these would be things that tipped the balance of the dungeon slightly in favour of that player's faction. This could be anything from an extra friendly sentry gun to being able to lock the ownership of the dungeon in it's current state for 2 minutes (though that one would need a global cooldown timer so a gang of high-rank players couldn't keep it permanently locked). This would give the high-ranked players an advantage specific to FW, without giving them an advantage in the wider galaxy, or be something that the 0.0 crowd would covet (as it would be useless to them).
This would also encourage the more realistic effect of the militias organising around their more senior members, as there would be an FW advantages in doing so. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

I hope this means that losing rank reduces faction standings too? Also, will other standings derive from those faction standings as normal? I wouldn't normally ask, but seeing as how social skills won't seem to work with the militia corps, other standard assumptions might not hold here either.

So let me get this straight...
CCP is adding all this fancy FW stuff but is excluding the most loyal and active part of its player base in alliances and 0.0...
This rank system only sounds like it will further increase the divide.
Almost seems as if CCP is intentionally trying to destroy EVE as we've known it for the past 4 years, and I'm not sure for the better.
The system seems like it needs to incorporate all the player base from day 1; hanging alliances and their pilots out to dry should not be an option.

Almost seems as if CCP is intentionally trying to destroy EVE as we've known it for the past 4 years, and I'm not sure for the better.
The system seems like it needs to incorporate all the player base from day 1; hanging alliances and their pilots out to dry should not be an option.
While I'm not THAT cynical I still agree with the man. He has some EXCELLENT points. I have been waiting and reading all the info coming out and as of yet still do not see anything, to refute what his main point is, that being, the exclusion of the people that really wanted these things (the current PvP base of players). I am trying my best to not judge things to harshly, until I get all the info.
I am having trouble with the fact that this singular point might render this "expansion" rather moot to most people. As I have said before, what is in it for me, and the rest of the pilots who PvP in alliances and whatnot?
As a relatively new PvPer in Alliance warfare should I even care about this expansion?

The Insignia all look very nice and appropriate for the races. The Ranks are good too for the most part but I see a few that could use a little adjustment.
Amarr: All of these are good, an evolving shield design and religious sounding ranks. I particularly like the hollow/filled in parts on the insignia.
Minmatar: All good as well, an evolving claw/blade design and 'weapon' sounding ranks.
Caldari: Insignia are good, an evolving wing design that matches the bird theme in ship names. The Ranks have a flaw though, Brigadier General would be a lesser general but is supposed to be the highest rank.
Gallente: Insignia are good, a shield design for the defenders of freedom. The Ranks are good with one exception. "Vice" is the title for a second place person but is used for the top rank of commander. I think it should be Vice -> Shield -> Aegis. Especially since the Aegis is the greatest most powerful shield in all of creation and the can be no greater shield ever.
Overall a very nice job!

Why did you have to think up ranks :(
All you need is:
soldier
corporal
sergeant
lieutenant
mortal fist
shield anvil
high priest
mortal sword
... I mean if Steven Errikson is not right then who??? Arguably my opinions represent to an extent the opinions of my alliance and in particular circumstances give rise to a valid "casus belli" claim. |

Holy christ those rank names are bad. Protip: Lieutenant does not mean what you think it means. Good work on the caldari ranks though, they don't actually appear to be generated by some program that adds random nouns to military ranks, given that you did the right thing and pretty much just used traditional military ranks

If you leave the milita corp, can you still observe your ranks? For example, I gain x# of ranks with the Gallente militia then switch over to the Minmatar militia for giggles then somehow make it into the Amarr/Caldari militias, will I be able to retain the medals I earned and have them visible as I jump around. ------------------------ Peace through superior firepower: a guiding principle for uncertain times. |

Originally by: Ishina Fel Edited by: Ishina Fel on 23/05/2008 06:47:40 I agree with the overall sentiment that there shouldn't be too much based off the ranks.

How about having the rank reflect the size of ship that the gate restricts. ie: rank 0-2 frig, 3-5 cruiser, 6-8 battle cruiser, 9&10 battle ship. All adjustable of course. Just a thought on the gate restrictions.

I wish I could understand why this expansion is necessary. It's like this expansion is soley for the people who can't make the cut, or don't want to put in the effort. If people want ranks, that's a luxury you can already have with the corp title system - granted you don't get any cute logos, but the purpose is there for the players to make themselves. If people wanted to PvP, they can do it now already, anytime anywhere... if they want to conquer systems, then they can man up and do it. Instead, we're getting a system that not only excludes a chunk of players, but also makes it into a "dungeon" type mini-game to help people get on to 0.0.
The reason why I care: if this is the path that EVE is taking, then I will want to find another game. Too bad there are no other games at this time like EVE's current state. Please don't scew this up.
What this expansion needs to be: include everyone, and allow anyone at any time fight for their faction and conquer empire sovereign systems... or don't happen at all. Skip to improving nodes, or perhaps station walking.

ok i see ten images of shiney ranks on the dev blog for standings level. since we start at 0 we will get the top one at standing 9.0 if I've read that right..... What about those insane hardcore FW people that will grind their standing all the way up to 10.0? Is there any shiny badge at the end of that tunnel for them?

3 basic errors with ranks:
1. in real army ranks mean power to command, to give orders. In game you can't force someone to execute you orders (how about npc?).
2. in real army there is limitation for high ranks. Without limit we can end up with a situation where we'll have more generals then soldiers.
3. if capsulers are considered as mercenaries than factions should pay for efforts (in isk), if they are considered military, then factions should supply them with free ships, equipment etc. In case of mercenaries, ranks are useless from RP point of view.

I posted this somewhere else already but this is probably more appropriate here.
Can you make the minmatar titles more Tribal/raider-ish? Blade, talon, claw, fang, spear, lance are all cool. Spike need's to go. Less "formal" military titles if you could as well. Drop Major and Lieutenant and general. Captain is ok maybe. Chief, warrior, commander, master, overlord ect are cool.
Since it is a militia (mercenary?) force and the titles are more honorary then anything else, I think would think steering away from "leadership" titles and more toward rank names based on combat skill/role would be better.
I mean if I make rank ten am I really gonna be in charge of anyone else? Am I gonna have my own army or combat unit to command? I'd sure like to sound like a badass warrior though. A tribesman that can take one the best our enemies can throw at us and laugh. A bloody savage that can't get enough carnage to slake his thirst for vengeance. A champion that lives and dies by his own skill, strength, and wit.

There are corps and alliances that have spent years building their empires in 0.0. For the past few years the direction of EVE has been outward to 0.0 with continued advancement of industry, moons, and trade. Now, for the first time in perhaps the entire history of EVE there is an expansion that is going to put a screeching halt to that direction; and turn it back towards empire.
While this may only be temporary until CCP can get pirate factions involved, it may still have huge impact on existing alliances.

Every expansion CCP has released that I recall has included features that promote moving players to 0.0 and enriching the play, profits and overall fun for 0.0 corps. What is so wrong with them doing something that improves the game for empire based players which at the same time makes low sec significant?
Stop being selfish and assuming that eve and its developers must cater to your play style. It is possible for the eve experience to be improved for the majority of players even though it does not benefit you.
I have never been, never wanted to be and never will be in a 0.0 corp. Heck, it would be a pay cut. But I might give FW a try, with an alt of course. (have to protect my standings across empires).
As far as ranks go, I would like to see station services in the contested areas and in all militia installations be dependent on factional standing for their use and rank for discounts and perhaps priority to cue.
One example would be to add more research and manufacturing slots to stations in contested areas BUT only players of certain standing may use them. Give considerable discounts to players with higher ranks. If the system is lost, use of the station services in that system is lost as well as the ability to even dock at the station. Players do not loose their items, but they cannot access them until the system is retaken.
Also consider, perhaps in a future expansion, revamping the stations in the contested areas. Make them science and industry juggernauts with an immense number of science and industry slots at low cost. It gives a reason for corps and individuals to fight for their control. If rank and/or faction standing is required to access station services.... well carebears tired of high priced research POS expenses and long cues might consider FW.

Folks, here's some straight dope that IMO should have been in the Ranks dev blog. Some of you will be disappointed -- I know I am, by this and by the broader emerging evidence that FW may be a game mechanic without any game rewards built into it -- but some of you who fear ranks will destroy the game ought to be relieved: Originally by: CCP Gangleri Ranks give no benefit or in-game effect in their current iteration.
From here.
Ranks are also standings based and are fast to get -- in just a few days of play on SISI, folks are already reporting moving up through the first seven ranks. So everybody's a general who wants to spend a week or ten days at it.

never go by what goes on on Sisi for how things are going to be, after all ask how mutch a BC goes for on that server.
People are advancing fast through the ranks because they want to make sure that whatever mechanism they use for advancing rank works for all 4 factions for all 10 ranks. Otherwise if 1 week of PvP grinding is all it takes to go from rank I to rank X. then why the hell did they bother with ranks II through IX?

Napoleon had both arms - Ginger, you're thinking of Nelson, in all likelihood. Seriously CCP, you need to hire a better Napoleonic War staff historian for your internet spaceship game.
That said, love the rank logos. I'm not a fan of just about any of the other stuff in that dev blog(seriously, how hard is it to code in a first-approximation medal system?), but your graphical designers definitely deserve a pat on the back. ------------------ Fix the forums! |

This. Just think of Starwars -> Admiral Star Trek -> Admiral Sky Marshall in Starship Troopers, which is probably derived from the german "Luftmarschall" (G÷ring during WWII)
Common Military Ranks:
Navies Armies Air Forces Admiral of Field Marshal Marshal of the Fleet the Air Force Admiral General Air Chief Marshal Vice Admiral Lt. General Air Marshal Rear Admiral Major General Air Vice-Marshal Commodore Brigadier Air Commodore Captain Colonel Group Captain Commander Lt. Colonel Wing Commander Lt. Commander Major Squadron Leader Lieutenant Captain Flight Lieutenant Sub-Lieutenant Lieutenant Flying Officer Warrant Officer Sergeant Major Warrant Officer Petty Officer Sergeant Sergeant Leading Rate Corporal Corporal Seaman Private Aircraftman
So please don't use General, Major, Brigadier or Colonel in those Militia Ranks, as those are Ground-troop ranks, and pod pilots weren't ground troops last time I checked. Navy ranks would be fit as we have Navies in EVE, however some of the Air Force ranks sound nice too.
That's about the only (hopefully constructive) criticism I have. Quite like those rank logos, they are awesome.

I can understand the panic from the shell-shocked WoW refugees, but i don't see it being a problem. Pilot grinds his way thru FW to the top, attains Most High Imperial Asskicker, musters out and applies to, say, some 0.0 alliance... which is the path intended, right?
MHIA: Hello, Foo Alliance. I'd like to join you in the outer reaches. I am considered a badass by the Empire and would like to be an officer.
Foo Alliance Recruiter: So? Yer imperialist dogma-spoutin' officers don't carry no weight out here in the real world, boy. We hereby dub you Coffee Fetcher Rank One until you prove yourself in real combat.
MHIA:
No problem.

Love the insignia, but the inconsistencies of colonel/major/commander etc - that's just confusing and irritating. It's okay to have some variation (as with regular navies vs other services) - it's not okay to have substantial differences in sequence order!

For example, Generals command an army not a navy fleet. I think the proper rank should be Admiral (or Fleet Admiral).

There's a serious chance this has already been pointed out in some other thread. I have the utmost confidence I will be properly flamed in the right direction if that's the case, but...
What's with the Caldari Protectorate. Is this some nasty underhanded attempt to make the Caldari seem even more like the dumb meatheads they are? Because generally, a protectorate is an entity in need of protection, not giving it. In this case, CCP seems to either have it backwards -or- wants to make it seem the Caldari themselves have it backwards.
The former I would correct, the latter is fine with any Gallente. I'm betting it's a case of too much thumb-twiddling and not enough picking-up-a-much-needed-dictionary.
Greetings, Grismar.

I also agree that you should use naval naming conventions where they apply, Generals should be Admirals. Obviously Amarr will stay religious and Minmatar will stay rebels.

Will the FW ranks give additional Faction gains or are they going to be hard capped like the existing standings mechanism ?
ATM im +10 to Minmatar and +9 to gallente and the only way i can get closer to +10 to gallente is to grind even more missions to get gallente storylines.
If FW ranks give derived standings gains then those pilots with high Faction Standings already may have already exceeded the derived gain cap limits :''( which may remove some of the incentives for joining FW
Also with the FW mechanics will there be standing losses if missions/bunkers/facilities being lost/gained ?
btw, nice blog :)

Does this mean that the regular faction standings dont get affected by FW?
Every rank gained in Factional warfare will get you a faction standing boost.
Will that boost stay if you leave the faction? That is, can a person join FW to grind some factional standing, leave FW, and retain the factional standing?

I am with a few people on this one, I hope that this patch will not ruin the distinct aspects of this game. I hope ranks will not make this another mindless leveling system, where only the ones who constantly grind will advance.

FW seemed nice but here are my thoughts:
1) rank names aren't representing FLEET ranking
2) No Alliances => discluding people from a part of the game by another aspect of the game... ( ? is this still eve ? )
And if you say getting negative sec stat doesnt allow you in empire either, well you can still do missions to get it up again without changing corp-alliance.
3) locked items in LP store by rank ?... again ? is this EVE ?
4) Ranks are cool but that's it.. they show nothing more then :" look i've spend time on FW and ... euhm that's it "
After a while we'll all be top ranked and sadly it will make FW less then fun.
Why not make it a TOP ranked thing? IT will give people an extra status and push people to keep playing FW far beyond the max ranked limit now.
5) good point... conquering a spot seems sweet! It will most likely give highsec corporation a(n extra) goal!
6) love the artwork ^^
/me awaits counter thoughts!

Ok, here's a tricky question for you.
Say I have a char goes into the Minmatar militia and works up the chain there. You say you get a faction boost (in this case Minmatar) but what about Gallente, the allies? Or the 2 opposition - presumably they will tend downwards just as quick (or quicker in CCP tradition ;) ).
What happens to corp standings? Say this char does missions for a Caldari corp at a station in Gallente space. If he does FW will the Caldari corp tell him to shove it?
Is FW going to be a one way street? Can people fix their standings back if they decide to go work for the lumpyheads instead?

What do you think? Of course it's gonna be a one-way street.
Currently, the way factions work, you can keep your corp factions, but if you have, say, +8 with Caldari Navy but -5 with Caldari State, the empire faction overrides your corp standings and all Navy agents stop talking to you.
Also, the way the factions are designed, some of them it's impossible to climb out of the Abyss from. Most people who have lost Gallente or Minmatar factions can do a round-about route via Sisters of EVE or whatnot, but not every faction has that option open.
CCP has said nothing about looking at the factions themselves and making sure that you can climb out from -10 for ANY faction, however difficult that is. No, the situation seems to be that once you're below -5, that's it, bye bye.
FW is only a carrot / shiney, in a way, to get people to blow up their factions in order to see pretty explosions.

I love that Caldari mimics the titles for the real life Army. Why Army ranks over Naval ranks though?
Brigadier General should be Rear Admiral or Vice Admiral.
Also, any thought about switching Wing Commander with Strike Commander? To me, a Strike Commander seems more suiting for a leader of a small squad penetrating enemy territory, whereas a Wing Commander seems like someone who would be back at the office planning general strategy

Oooh, I seem to remember a while back the idea of corp logos being painted on specific places on ships in the future. Might we also see these insignias being applied in other Places perhaps.. someday.
I'm not sure why people are worried about things being "level restricted". It's not like eve doesn't contain a certain amount of grind anyway, just to get the iskies or LPs or Tags to pay for stuff. Furthermore it makes the game more attractive to other different kinds of players, hence you end up with more people to pew pew with. Then there's the fact that the entire rest of the game has none of this level restricted stuff, even if they implement it for faction warfare, so it's not like they're ruining the game you love, even if you can't stand the thought of having something slightly different in it. And then there's the fact that it's not exactly like you can just sign up with the best agent of a corporation straight away. you have to "grind" through that corporation or that faction before you can get them. You still have to spend time working on your standing, like you have to for the faction warfare ranks. Compared to a lot of the skills the time it'll take to rise in ranks is likely to be not that extreme. Lastly the rank system and potentially the rank-restricted material is clearly designed as a method of reward to those who might otherwise not engage in PVP, but would enjoy it even if they hadn't had a good experience of it before hand.
So it's not about doom and gloom, it's like the rest of the faction warfare expansion, it's about making more of the game accessible to more people, so that everyone can have a better time, not so the hardcore players or some noobs feel left out cos they happen to not have got the particular requirements for something. No doubt it won't take too long before there will be contracts available for the restricted stuff. I mean there's nothing stopping a guy who's never worked for the Amarr from getting a Navy Apoc, if they have the cash for it. I see no difference here in basic phylosiphy than before.

To start, another amusing blog. Nice work, hippies. You deserve all the tofu you can eat.
As far as I'm concerned though, the titles and ranks seem fine to me. From a roleplaying aspect, people must remember that Eve is set tens of thousands of years in the future, and that it is more than possible for a list of rankings to get mixed up during the rise and fall of several civilisations. Navy officers holding seemingly army-like ranks? Not too big a deal. On that note, though, it will be interesting to see how CCP prevents every noob with a rookie ship from becoming a Bloody Fist of Matar (<- please bring this one back!!!). Empyrean Age will be a balancing act of making sure that we're not WoWed into grinding 18 hours a day for bonuses (economic or otherwise), and giving meaningful use to FW. As far as I've seen FW PvP is supposed to be its own reward. Is it profitable? Will there be any money to be made in it that will not make the game a grind-fest? If not, you won't likely see a whole bunch of carebears lining up to lose their hard-mined fortune by getting blown up for no incentive.
This being said, I do plan to join up and kill as many Ammarians as my IP will allow. FW warfare sounds like a great idea, as long as it is not reduced to grinding for meaningless standings. Basing the ranks on actual accomplishments sounds good, as well as lp reward. Cheers to the think tanks behind that.
