Nowhere is safe, ever. Empire is mostly safe, but if you're undocked, people can shoot you and kill you. Lo-sec is safe in places, but should generally be treated as hostile. 0.0 is also safe in places, but if you see people, assume they'll try to kill you.
Your name is everything. People trust Chribba with motherships because he's spent years building his name, and they don't trust a two-month old character with an exclamation mark for a face with their money because maybe it's a lottery, but it's likely a scam.
There's no such thing as a fair fight.
People play this game for different reasons. Some want to fight, some want to argue, some want to mine, some want to kill NPCs, some want to build empires, some want to destroy them. Some want to collect stuff, others want to steal, others want to play politics, and some just want to meet chicks. Don't assume your norm is applicable in the next person's case, because it probably isn't.
People are going to be mean to you on the forums. Hell, someone is gonna be mean to me in this very thread, guaranteed. It's ok, they don't really hate you, and it's just internets.
This is CCP's game. If you don't like the way things are, you have many avenues to suggest it constructively. If they say no, a hissy fit won't work, and it's STILL their game. Maybe you should think about your options.
Nobody cares if you, your seventeen friends, and all of your 36 accounts are quitting because 'x mechanic is broken'. The only people replying are those that want your stuff. _

Nice list. Let's see if we can't keep adding to it.
- The most vocal group is usually not representative of the majority of players even if they think they are.
- Most players don't visit the EVE website, forum, in-game news or devblogs.
- The terms "blob" and "fleet" are interchangeable. The only difference is that it's a fleet when you're in it and an evil blob when you're fighting it :p.
- If someone is actually going to quit because they think a certain balance change in the game isn't "fair", they're playing the wrong game.
- If you ever quit EVE, keep your stuff and your characters. You'll be back some day.
- Given the choice, 95% of players would want buffs for everything they use and nerfs for everything else. 95% of players should therefore never be put in the position of choosing game mechanic changes or design focus direction. Given a chance to change EVE for the better, most players would end up wrecking it.
- PvP is rarely 1v1 and game balance is not based on 1v1 combat.
- Plenty of the developers do read the forum, do pick up on player ideas and do implement good ones.

Yeah I assumed you would if you liked them. I say let people contribute and add the good ones to the list, it'd be handy to have a big list of observations old players have had about EVE to refer to.

Edited by: Talon Aidian on 23/05/2008 05:41:40 Edited by: Talon Aidian on 23/05/2008 05:41:18 Here are a few more for consideration:
* Unless you know the person you are speaking to, you don't know for certain who you are speaking to.
* A ship alone in nullsec most likely isn't.
* The chances of your industrial ship arriving safely at its destination increase in direct proportion to the benefit to the escorting warship.
* Taking a chance you can't afford to lose is a fast way to lose everything.
* If something doesn't look right, don't wait around to find out what it is.
* Don't trust anyone with a bigger ship than yours.
* The time to have an escape plan is before you have to use it.
* Any battle you walk away from is a good one.
* If you want respect, you must give it yourself.
* Honor is not a game mechanic.

- Don't fly what you can't afford to lose.
- Expect to lose what you fly eventually.
- When you lose a ship and think it's a big loss, it isn't.
- Use the search button or read the stickies on the forums. If you don't, people will be angry and you will have a harder time doing something than if you would've taken 15 seconds to look.
But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post. |

- Always enjoy what you're currently doing in EVE fully. In the same way that you look fondly back at things you did a in years gone by, you'll be looking back on today some time in the future and realising they were good times. Sieze the day
- Don't restrict yourself in gameplay too much because some day you'll be bored of EVE and wondering "what if I had gone pirate back then?"
- Pirates are not "the baddies" and antipirates are not "the good guys". There's no black and white in EVE politics, only shades of gray.
- It's alright to gank a few haulers now and then (it's excellent stress relief ).
- Oveur loves his beer.
- Jita doesn't lag because the server needs upgraded, it lags because we pile into it until it lags. When the server was last upgraded, jita's peak population shot from 400 to 700 and although the lag was just as bad at the new peak of 700, the carrying capacity was a huge improvement.
- In a similar vein, fleet battles don't lag because the server needs upgraded or the code is buggy. They lag because it's always better to have more pilots and both sides keep adding pilots until it lags.
- Everyone has alts. If someone tells you they have no alts, they're lying. Nobody leaves their extra two character slots empty for long.
- You don't have to hate WoW to love EVE. I play both currently, they're completely different games and don't overlap in any reasonable sense.
- When it comes down to it, CCP do know what they're doing. EVE has stood the test of time with tremendous grace. The sky is not falling and everyone will not quit after <insert patch name here> comes out.
- Despite a lot of players *****ing on the forums about CCP decisions and GM rulings, they get things absolutely right most of the time. Evidence to the contrary (such as forum posts) are prone to confirmation bias. That means we only really notice when things go wrong and don't notice the 99% of the time when things go right. This means observation is not a reliable way of judging the ratio of successes to failures.
- For every bug in a patch, a hundred bugs were found and fixed before release.
- Given any piece of information, the playerbase will always assume the worst case scenario and go into hysterics (something that I ashamedly have been engaging in a lot lately. Sorry Wrangler, Eris etc. :S)
- Real life analogies have their place in EVE but that place is NOT in game design or game balance.
- Solving the lag issues and "simple" bugs in EVE is not as simple as it may seem. As a programmer, I know this one first-hand.
- The developers that work on content cannot be employed to fix bugs. You don't want the artists and designers touching the code.
- Oveur loves his beer.
- A game that doesn't expand goes stale and uninteresting. Regular large expansions with a lot of changes may not always be easy for some players to accept and adapt to but it's a successful business strategy.
- What's good for you isn't necessarily good for the game.
I'll probably think up some more later, this is actually quite nice. It's like a way for us to pass our accumulated wisdom on to other players. I'd like to see some older players adding to the list.

New characters will never know how easy they've got it.
Complete the tutorials, it's well worth it.
PvP's will always complain about the industrialists and vice versa. There's no exceptions and no real way to compromise. Short of trying to do a little bit of what you may not enjoy there's no real hope without the use of alts and lots of them.
Warp to Zero has been a great thing young grasshopper, before that we had to crawl 15km and get one shot killed by a sniper sitting on a gate out of the range of the turrets.
Never use an industrial ship to transport blueprints. EVER.
Target painting is a useful skill to train.
I'm sure there's a lot more.
Life is about memories the more the better.

Learning skills are useful but don't let them prevent you getting the fun stuff first.
Assume everything is a scam/trap/trick.
There are nice friendly helpful people in eve, they just don't hang around in noob systems.
In ship fittings: If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid.
In Eve anything you do can get you killed, including doing nothing.

- If you are on a paying account learn all Learning skills you can afford to FIRST. You may hate it to start but it will pay off big in the long run.
- Never go AFK in an undocked ship you can't afford to lose while you are away. It may take a while but eventually a suicide gank squad will nail you, even in Jita. (This goes along with the very first reason but bears repeating).
- Have FUN! This is a game, a hobby, that's the whole point. If you aren't enjoying what you are doing now, go do something else, this isn't a job.

I disagree with this. As an older player who's gotten friends and family to sign up, I noted that training all the learning skills before anything else actually ruined their game experience and some quit later because of it. I think tacitorus said it best with:

Nothing happens quickly in Eve unless you attack a vet with a noob character.
Online Time is the only Eve commodity that's always in short supply.
If you can't wait until your basic support kills improve before flying that new BS, you're going to lose it fast.
Time based training is what keeps the mature minded players in and the 23/7 level grinders out. --

Edited by: Auron Shadowbane on 23/05/2008 15:23:53 * If your outgunned and outnumbered target is fighting back on you chances are high you are going to loose your whole fleet to a blob twice as big.
* If you are outgunned, outnumbered and dont have a chance to flee dont die silently. Engage the enemy cause they might think of the above tip and run away... (yeah goddamn it has worked many times for me :D )
* If you fly alone in nullsec fitting a cyno-field to a spare high slot as well as ozone for one cycle might save you from a squad of wannabees once in a while.
