Hi, been playing eve for about 2 months just missioning mainly. Until now ive been using an osprey kitted with 2 tractor beams 2 salvagers and 3 cargo expanders, but I've just upgraded to a raven (I know its too early but I've been aching for a new ship and to do lvl 4 missions) so I've switched my old drake to a salvage ship (4 salvagers 4 tractors 4 cargo extenders). However its quite an expensive ship to use for salvaging, and doesn't have as much cargo as the osprey. Before I splash out the isk on 3 salvaging rigs, are there any better ships for salavging? Cheaper, similar high slots but semi-decent speed and plenty of lows for cargo expanders. I've been looking through the market but cant seem to find anything that fits the bill

If you want to use bc for salvaging, use Hurricane, ive heard a lot of ppl love it.It has 8 high slots and 6 lows, plus good base speed, so its alot better then drake. If you dont want to use bc, you can use destroyer, as I do, it also has 8 high slots.

Harbinger or Hurricane will perform better than the drake but with insurance and all cost around 70M (with rigs).
Alternatively, you can use the good old destroyer but it will have trouble with extenders and rigs because it will handle about as well as a cruiser, even with AB on and those lvl 4 battlefields can be huge.

Stabber is good. It's very fast, can carry about 900m3 of cargo with 6 high-slots, can permarun an afterburner and can fit a fairly tough buffer shield tank.

Depending on your situation, you can use a Destroyer (I'm Caldari so use a Cormorant) and dump everything into a can that you tow around. Remove the good stuff and come back in a hauler if the can will require more than 2 trips to unload or just make an extra run in the salvager. Or just bookmark rooms, finish the mission, and return in a salvager that can use its MWD and won't need to tank...unless the risk of gank is high. I second the hurricane.
It's probably the best salvaging ship in the game. The high speed, the rack of 8 highs, and the over-sized cargo bay really add up to being ideal for the job.
Who knew that Minmatar would have the best ship for picking up garbage? Go figure! :D

Hurricane if you are rich. Catalyst for everyone else. 8 highs, 3 lows (expanders) AB in mids and a cap battery/cap charger.
Works very well.
Eris works better :)

Thanks for the advice everyone. On my way to work now, so I'll have a proper scout around when I get back tonight. Oh I use the drake with no tank, just comes in to clear up after my raven has killed everything

Why do you need cargo expanders in a salvager? you could salvage 10 lvl 4 missions and still not fill a shuttle's cargo bay... everything weighs 0.1 ???
i use a Crusaider with 4 salvagers and a heap of speed.

Erm, so what do you do with all the loot being dropped? Sometimes I pick up an arbalest cruise launcher, so I figure you don't pick em up?
I pick up everything I see when salvaging, and in that case my hold isn't large enough for even 1 mission.

The Execuror is the best looting/salvaging ship in Eve. There's no real competition.

I use an Exequror as well. Ther are only about 3 level 4 missions that I cannot fit all of the drops into the hold with Expander II's in the lows.

Claymore makes for a pretty good salvage ship for your alt to sit in if you're dual-clienting. 4 tractors, 3 salvagers and a cap reduction gang link for your shield/armour reps, then plenty of tanking in the mids, 4 cargo expander IIs in the lows and whatever rigs. You can actually start salvaging before your main has finished the room. In fact 4 hammerhead IIs can add some useful extra DPS.
Disclaimer: takes some concentration.

A Catalyst is the best option if you want a cheap, quick hull. I like the Harbinger or Hurricane if you want a bigger ship. Even the Harbinger and Hurricane (or Typhoon) cannot carry all the loot from some missions. I really appreciate the maneuverability of my salvage Catalysts.
On my 0.0 account I use a Stabber - it is a marvelous ship for cleaning up after fleet battles. ------------

I personally prefer thrasher, compared to catalyst. Bit smaller cargo, but better cap and can fit 10MN AB. (yeah it ruins your agility but it does let you go much faster than with 1mn ab without the cap penalties of mwd).

Because some of us loot and salvage with the salvager, rather than loot with the missioning ship and then salvage with the salvager. The loot can be quite bulky - especially if you fight drones.
I use a Coercer - 8 highs, 1 mid and 4 lows - using an AB in the mid. Doesn't really run out of cap as often as I expect (unless I fail salvaging a lot), and even with 4 cargo expanders I run out of space salvaging level IV drone missions.

Armageddon 8 low for expcargohold 3 med for 1x cargo scan , 1x mwd, 1xafb 8 high for 3x salvagers, 3x tractors, 2xdrone link aug for structures , just in case (eventually 1 salvager and 1 tractor more)
5 Wasp II rigs 1x cargohold e 1x aux thrust 1x(empty)
4818 cargohold are enough for quite all missions
880 vel with mwd 350 with afb. This let you salvage while approaching gates. Velocity above 400, 420 makes cans bouncing in and out max range for recovery (1500mt).
It is a little expensive, but when and if you resell it you'll lose only rigs. From my point of view it's an investment.
For me top vessel for salvaging is Kronos. Really expensive, but it's a game....and you do not have to repay ship costs with salvage income : you just resell it.

Well thanks again everyone, this has given me a lot to think about. Being caldari a lot of those ships are going to take a bit of cross-training, not much for the destroyers/cruisers tho so I think I'll do that before I spend any hard earned isk on salvage rigs
Yeah I loot and salvage at the same time, I just find it easier than looting with my slow ass raven

These people lie. Do not listen to them. Keep using destroyers and battle cruisers for maximum salvage efficiency. That is all. (guys STFU this is super sekrit stuff aight).

I use a cormorant it works very well my fitting is along these lines off the top of my head
4x salavgers 4x tractor beams 1mn microwarpdrive 2x medium cap batteries (i think.. maybe they are small) lows cant remember
It works quite well, just bookmark each spawn finish the mission then go back after telling your agent you are finished and all the cans are in normal space so a mwd works.

From the isk pyramid of efficiency
Marauder (Vargur is obviously the best - nobody will mistake it for a mission ship) Apoc Hurricane Destroyer of choice

Edited by: Bytaless on 04/06/2008 09:00:44 Im plannin on buyin a salvage ship right now and im going for the hurricane. The battlesips are slower, but yield more cargohold. With hurricane i can reach 488m\s with my skills and 2041m^3. The speed can be increased to 663 m\s with max skills. Armageddon 257 max speed with 4190 cargo; Apoc 239 speed and 3697 cargohold. Speed is with aferburner, cargohold expanders and 3 salvage tackles, as microwarp doesn work in every mission, and i choose to fit a afterburner instead ! The best marauder for the job seems kronos (galente) with 301 max speed and 6984 cargohold. But that's a long way away for me.
Now while i do realize 6984 cargo hold is more than enough for each and every lvl 4 mission, (i don't know about lvl 5), how well will i manage with my hurricane and its 2041 m3 ? U can see that from all ships, it has the biggest speed, so for me its on the podium with speed. Hurricane is the fastest, and kronos is the biggest. But if 2041 m3 is enough, than probably hurricane is the best salvage ship there is ! Big speed also kinda compensates for the 40km tractor beam range on marauders !
Still i believe kronos to be the best, because with 6904m3 beeing more than enough, i can sacrifice some cargo for more speed. Anyway huricane is all i can aford now, money wise and skill wise.
I'd like to hear more opinions !I've just noticed kronos can never reach the hurricane speed and have the same cargohold as the hurricane. So probably hurricane is amongs the best ships for salvage !

Do the mission, bookmark wrecks and then go home, turn in the mission and go out in your salvager.
I dislike destroyers for the job, especially when you rig them and fill the lows with expanders. They are about as agile as a cruiser and about as fast, even with an afterburner. My ABing Moa is faster than my rigged and expander fitted catalyst.
Yes, it will be worse the bigger your ship is (BC with the same outfit) but at least they can fit larger speed modules, such as a BS size MWD or AB, which is what I do.

Hurricane is great for lvl 4's
So is the Harbinger
Generally destroyers are good for lvl 3's and below... Atleast the thrasher worked good. Some destroyers is better than othres though due to the difference in low and mid slots layout.
If you wanna gimp it you can rig it. And i think there are also implants of varying price for salvaging.

Biggest L4 loot space I ever saw was 1700 m^3. I bought a Cane for salvaging about 2 weeks ago and I've managed every L4 I've run since then in a single trip.

Use a big ship with a phat signature please.
And while running the mission be sure to use plenty of drones.
And take your time salvaging, no hurry, use that hurricane.
