First of all, CCP needs to be down right punched in the face for allowing this into the game. ITS A GAME and they insist on letting this go and will no help the victims nor punish the people doing the scam. This is unacceptable, CCP MUST fix this crap, i have been playing for over 4 years and not once did i hear of scams in EVE or that the GM's dont give a rats arse about the people who fall victim to it. I was told to basically get over it. Well i throw the BS flag on the field for that. I paid MY EARNED ISK threw hours of game play and im told that theres nothing do to about it. I have left EVE for this crap and for the response I got from the GM. Maybe someone at CCP will see this and then get a damn clue thats something should be done about it. |

You know, once I brought an iteron for 945 mil. I just accepted the loss, not much I could do about it, just let it go.
Since then I dont use the market when I'm tired or when I'm in a hurry I make sure I double check, because the time wasted could save me a billion isk lol.
Most people will read this thinking it's part of my post, when its actually my sig :P

Check the Crime and Punishment section where this thread actully belongs. Scams are part of the game. Its a Sandbox enviorment, if you can play the good guy then the other person can play the bad guy.
BTW before someone beats me to it. Since your quiting can I have your stuff?

Boy I'm not sure if I should ask for your stuff, or tell you about the new game coming out from CCP based on EVE but with more of a "moderated sandbox" flavor. The cool thing about it is you are able to transfer some of your Isk from EVE over to the new game at a 50% exchange rate. I already have a character with max fighter skills so if you want me to transfer some money over for you, just follow these instructions:
1. post your new account name in this thread 2. send the amount of money you want transferred to this character, Malcolm Gerwulf 3. mail me in-game when your account is up and you'll have your money back in minutes |

I scammed the very first day in EVE. First three days of mine I stole cans (there was no wrecks then) and did bookmark scams (sold bookmarks with a phony location). That's the first thing I learned in this game, that a low-skilled players best make money by stealing. I also wonder how the hell he could play 4 years without noticing.
I stopped my scamming and thieving after I ****ed off a group of 200 angry russians that camped me into a station, since then I been a combat pilot and made sure to play with corps that has industrial sides as well.. but yah, seriously, the best and most logical way for a new player to earn ISK with that low sp would be to steal ore and ninja-salvage other players wrecks.

I can't think a reason for scamming to be punishable. If you are drunk/dizzy/sick/stupid or simply a dumb**** , then it's normal to be scammed.
NOBODY forced you to buy the item in this extremely high price. The seller just puts it there. If you buy it then it's your fault.

I LOLed. You need to be punched in the face for paying for a game for 4 years but not actually playing it. I've made countless billions off of scamming. It used to be much easier too, selling Stabber as Vagabond, and Caracal as Cerberus. CCP have made things that people used for scamming a little bit clearer and harder to fall for, but some idiots still do. You seem to be one of those idiots. Welcome to EVE.

I might not agree with scamming but I cant see a valid reason for it to be banned just because i might not like it. I mean its totally within the remit of the EULA. So just shop better on the contract system i guess.

Scamming was one of the reasons that got me into this game as well. Heck, I don't even scam. I never plan to either. However, the economy is very realistic, players that do decide to scam don't vanish by some supreme God. It actually makes for a more realistic world. Instead, you can punish scammers by having your friends hunt them down and repeatedly blowing them up. Someone already posted about this happening to him by an angry group of russians.
If you want to quit this game that's fully up to you but if I was in your shoes I'd take some of my friends and go hunting. I'm not going to say I'm sorry for you because your attitude is very poor. Anyone that gives up this easily might be happier elsewhere.

Do you realize even something called WoW was not persecuting scamming for years although you had to have total trust to acquire essential parts of gear? Without contracts, without warning boxes, without market averages. Even they resisted kid whines while they still had some other customers. You demand more bear care than WoW had?
Do what you do in life. Do not trade on net with you main account (character) and make only so much money vulnerable as needed for a trade.

Ok, maybe I won't pay to get it off my hands, but it's a neat little item that demonstrates what ≡v≡ is all about: even the NPC mission agents scam you by giving you completely useless, unsellable and loss-inducing items as "rewards" for all your hard work. Now, if the NPCs are that nasty, do you really expect the players to be well-behaved?

The level of fail of a 4 year old character being unaware of the scams in eve. Even as a 1 month old char I had heard of some of them.
you sir, are either
1) a troll 2) someone who bought his char on e-bay 3) an absolute idiot
Take your pick, come back and pick twice even.

Yeah, there are people in Eve who live to be thieves of various sorts. However, for the sake of argument, where does one draw the line on a scam?
For example, the stated 'Caracal as a Cerberus' or 'billion isk iteron' are obviously attempts to catch stupid people who don't check and double-check an item they are purchasing. That's a scam set up to take advantage of people who make a mistake.
But what about overcharging items? I'm selling Oxygen Isotopes to former Insurgency members in their former main station for 2,750 isk per unit. More than 5 times empire price, but they need it to get their Capitals out now that they've failure cascaded. I'm selling shuttles for 200,000. Would that be considered a 'scam' to you?
Because to me, its a great and glorious victory for our Economic Warfare Unit.

Originally by: Preditorian First of all, CCP needs to be down right punched in the face for allowing this into the game.
Caveat Emptor or "buyer beware" is the general rule in EVE. In danish (my language) we have a saying that goes: "den kloge narrer den mindre kloge" which roughly translates into "the wize tricks the less wize".
Confidence scams and price fixing. Spying and ambusing. These are all elements of human interaction. I am not saying that it would be impossible to design a game without them, but what would be the point?
Where does the line between a scam and exhuberant pricing go? If I make an item at 100 ISK and put it up for sale at 1000 ISK, can I be called a scammer, or am I simply a clever businesman?
I submit to you that "scammer" is as non-descriptive as "pirate". It depends entirely on your perspective. If YOU are the one being shot at, the person doing the shooting is quite obviously a pirate. In much the same way, you can be called the scammer if you are the one using your knowledge of humans to your advantage.
Rule #1 in EVE is "do not trust anyone".
Oh and P.S. I can hold your stuff for you if you arent using it in the near future

Wow. A posting history of only 2 threads, and the first one does indeed date back to 2005.
I guess if you are socially dysfunctional enough, it really *is* possible to play EVE without ever learning about the "unrestricted interraction with consequences" aspect (meaning anyone can do anything to you they think they can get away with or are willing to bear the consequences of). Welcome to the endgame of EVE .
And i thought *i* was reclusive! |

Edited by: Stazzmo on 20/06/2008 15:15:29 I completely agree with the OP. Scamming is a blight to humanity, CCP should be ashamed of themselves to allow people to take from others or to prey on the weak-minded.
And on a related note, i'm glad i was able to help that poor Nigerian doctor who needed someone to help him transfer $500,000 in medical benefits out of his country that his evil government was trying to take from him. That poor man and those poor people. I mean, that $5,000 transfer fee was a small price to pay to help someone out. And he said i would get it back. I mean, why would anyone not trust a doctor? Especially one that has risked his life to help others. Also, i'd get a percentage as a "finder's fee!" Hooray!
But if you don't get any satisfaction from CCP, cancel your account and never come back! That will show them you are unhappy for wasting 4 years of time and effort. Don't let CCP and the filthy scammers of EVE win! I dream of electric sheep. |

I'd rather play in a sandbox than a controlled environment... I remember runescape (I know, it sucks, please don't flame me) when they limited money gain and loss to 3k every 15mins. So nobody could get scammed.. but nobody could give presents to friends and all forms of buy/ sell profits were gone. One big grind-a-thon.

Heh... this thread brings back memories of Ultima Online. Before publish 16, it allowed even more than EVE does now. There was actually a 'steal' skill that people could use to steal objects from other peoples' inventories, and you couldn't do anything about it! There were always tricks to prevent it from happening, of course - but nothing was foolproof.
There was no safe place - there were always thieves at the banks, the cities were constantly being attacked by lizardmen and as soon as you left them there'd be PKs. And there was absolutely no better rush than the one you would get when being chased by a PKer. Even when I got killed and lost all of my armor and weapon, I'd still have a huge smile on my face because it's about the most fun you can have in the game.
My very first day in the game, within minutes of my character creation, someone tried to scam me out of the Ranger Armor I got on character creation (which was apparently very valuable). I didn't fall for the scam, but minutes later the city was attacked by lizardmen which killed me, and someone else looted the Ranger Armor from my body. Did I quit then? Are you kidding? Of course not! I was having a blast.
All kinds of nasty stuff happened, between the stealing, PKing and scamming but after carebear land was introduced in pub 16 and everyone moved there, the game was ruined. No more stealing, no more PKing, no more scams. Even though I never personally did any of those things, the game just wasn't the same without them and I ended up quitting not long after pub 16.
So I have to say that although I absolutely despise scammers and pirates, the game just wouldn't be the same without them and I would probably quit if they were removed. The reason I started playing EVE in the first place was because of the PvP aspects. In fact, the fact that there even was a high-sec empire space originally put me off. I figured it would probably be just like UO with everyone in the high-sec space and the low- and null-sec areas completely deserted. I'm glad to see I was wrong.

No way
First of all, to repeatedly state the fact you've been "playing" for four years, is a red flag. I don't remind people I talk with how long I've been playing. I don't go on the forums and toss in some timeline that shows I'm a "vet". So, playing armchair psychologist here, I'm just about 100% convinced you're a bought character or account. Four years nor once heard of scams lol, this entire post has to be a set up
Oh and I miss the days when you could put up a single T2 missile on contract and label it as a BPO. I'm damn glad I got in on that scam while it worked :)

A game mechanic that has been around for the last year and a half and he just used it for the first time. Yeah, this guy hasn't been playing for four years.

But then we wouldn't have this highly amusing thread - or have seen Chribba laugh at someone getting scammed cause it was a measly 45 mil
Sadly, even with the long-ass chat log, this still feels like a troll... high sec missioning and high sec mining are both lucrative enough (mining mainly with high skills in it, but plenty of training time in 4 years...) that a REALLY SLOW learner playing 4 years would be able to earn more than THAT... which leaves clueless ebayer, and surely after buying a 4 year old char they would be able to buy isk, which makes 45 mil a minor nuisance... my sleep-deprived brain is telling me that's somewhere under $5 worth of isk...
One of the more amusing threads to read either way, and should contribute to the piles and piles of threads that make it blindingly obvious to anyone who even glances at these forums that scamming is 100% perfectly legal in EVE.

Huh? These two things are contradictory. If you have been playing EVE for four years how exactly did you miss that scaming was allowed? I mean its just really hard to believe this.
Hell the Dentara Rast scam made 4 or 5 video game publications awhile back. Like it was in print in gaming magazines and on almost every video game website.

Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware that 45M can be A LOT of ISK for some pilots (I've been there too). But a 4 year old pilot making a thread about 45M ISK is asking to get flamed.
I wouldn't have commented it like that if the OP actually was a new player. Four years and 45M ISK and never heard of a scam in the scam-game of all games...
Sorry for your loss, one option would be: 1. quit game for one month 2. use the fee for that month to buy a timecard 3. sell it on the forum 4. make 300M (almost 10x more than you made the past 4 years...) 5. ??? 6. profit.

poor guy, don't listen to all the trolls and that nasty chribba!
i've been playing for like 2 years now and barely made 200 mil myself so i feel your pain.
mail me ingame and i'll get you the guy his corpse for a small fee
and i'm willing to send you 45 mil but only after i know you are honest so send me 5 mil first then i know you're legit and i'll send 50 mil back.
DON'T GIVE UP !!!

Chribba's guide to saving your personal economy. Will this be out in book form or only available on the EVE forums?
Also, OP must be trolling. I refuse to believe that a 4 year old character haven't heard of that stuff or have only accumulate 45M ISK in 4 years.. If OP shot a single 3000 ISK rat every day for 4 years he would have made 43.800.000 ISK. And you're seriously telling me that's all he has accomplished in 4 years?
Besides, Chribba making fun of a person getting scammed in any other context would be a sign of the apocalypse and I don't see that happening just yet

Originally by: Stazzmo Edited by: Stazzmo on 20/06/2008 15:15:29 I completely agree with the OP.
