This book is well written and I advise people to buy, however for those who refuse and dislike having their RP held hostage a plot summary follows.
I must add that if you have any intention of buying the book reading this will pretty much spoil the entire thing, so read on at your own risk.
***SPOILERS***
The war between the the State and Federation was brought into being by the Broker in a bid to gain the formula for Insorum (having contracted a morphic virus similar to Vitoc). The only leverage he could find against Otro Gariushi was Otro's patriotism and so Heth was used to place all Caldari in danger in the hope of getting the Ishukone CEO to cave in.
Heth himself was a member of the same terrorist organization that felled the dome of Nuvolle Revnour (sp) and while his desire to tear down the corrupt Caldari elite seems noble his hatred of Gallenteans goes beyond rationality.
The Broker obviously didn't get what he wanted, and it was he who was piloting the Nyx that caused the Malkalen disaster. As you can tell Otro didn't back down and is now dead, though the highly advanced drones he left to care for the Insorum formula beleive he'll be coming back. The Broker himself is dying and will probably make at least one more power play to obtain the cure before he bites the dust.
On the Minmatar Amarr front the Minmatars have been receiving aid from the Gallenteans since the founding of the Republic. This money was given as a percentage of the budget. In recent years the Gallentean economy has boomed massively, while the Minmatars (rather than actually helping their people) have been building a massive warfleet in deadspace with the proceeds.
Receiving the Insorum (thought not the formula) free of cost as Otro's dying wish and the discovery of the Starkmanir forced the Elders hand and their fleets closed down CONDORD rapid reaction capabilities and proceeded to to recover slaves from the Empire. They did this with the help of the Ammatars who have been hiding the Starkmanir all this time.
Jamyl Sarum did indeed commit Sathol'syn at Doriams coronation, however she did so in the knowledge that she would awaken in a clone. Having been convinced that the might of Sarum would be needed Jamyl agreed to this, however she did not awake for three years. The data transfer from her pod was larger than expected and was either compiled or rewritten before being passed on to the clone. Falek Grange (mastermind of the plan to avoid Jamyl's fate) had her body stimulated to very high levels of strength during this time. However his consciousness was seemingly lost when Chamberlain Karsoth wiped out those three supposed traitors on the Theology Council. Falek's clone awoke but his personality never made it.
Jamyl's WMD seen in the trailer is a Terran artifact retrieved from near the EVE gate and fueled by a material only the Terrans and Rogue Drones know how to safely gather. It caused significant damage to the Abaddon after being fired, but having been reverse engineered could be built again leaving fuel as the only real concern.
Jamyl Sarum has, thanks to her incident, been left with a split personality and what appears to be the power of telepathy (lets hope this gets explained soon because the book leaves it open). Hints are made that infact she is possessed by the personality of Falek Grange and that his efforts regarding Sarum have in fact been made with the goal of getting himself on the throne in Jamyl's body. It is implied that should she die again the other personality will gain complete control upon her resurrection.

Good point, MotherMoon. As far as the backstory so far had pointed out (excluding the book) a person needs to be plugged in to a capsule to be successfully cloned. It wouldn't make much sense that Jamyl commits Sathol'syn inside her pod, or does it?

I'd like to ask for a background check did she kill her self in a pod? I mean back 5 years ago at the event.
if so then... why are all the RP people whining? you've poded people before did they ever stay dead? DUH I would of figured that out the day it happen 5 years ago:P so by the whining I assumed it ws in public not in a ship, in a pod that would clone her.. I mean hell even she wanted to die being poded gets you cloned whether you like it or not.

you only need to be in a pod if you want to get your brain scanned right at the moment before you die. i'm guessing you could also perform this whole scan process beforehand and then maybe even take your time with it to avoid killing yourself. then go on and get killed and you wake up in a clone and all you lose would be the memory of what happend after the scan.
re: jamyl the main problem imho doesnt seem to be that she was cloned but that there is no explanation for the amarrian public. returning from the dead is still considered a major feat if you dont clone yourself and using a clone is out of the question due to purity concerns. to the amarrian public this can be seen as anything from a miracle reaffirming their faith to proof of high treason on jamyls part.
so the theology council or jamyl herself should have really come up with a statement declaring why this is not a problem at all. sth along the lines of declaring this an act of devine intervention would be perfectly fine as long as the amarrian public gets some sort of explanation/excuse to avoid thinking about what may have happend.
especially considering how important the question of purity/cloning was before there really needs to be some explanation for this whole thing.
also: this entire plotline reeks of a crappy b-movie and i'm talking "battlefield earth"-crappy here.

The heirs were all aboard ships at the time and self-destructed to commit suicide.
Originally by: MotherMoon why are all the RP people whining?
Cloning the divine flesh of the heirs is a sin. However this has probably been overlooked by a populace for several reasons.
> She just turned the tide of an invasion > She did so seeming to wielding the power of God > Amarr tradition has changed much due to the advent of capsule technology.
Originally by: Elsebeth Rhiannon Mm, did the book explain "Elders" at all? Or were all Matari portrayed just plain old mundane elders without capital e?
The Elders are very much human. They carry the wisdom of those Elders before them and are the leaders of their tribes. The capital "E" is due to the name being an honorific title. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

Yes, gotta say I'm looking forward to seeing how CCP explain that little number.
Of course they could of avoided most of the fits on this forum by simply posting a couple of news articles explaining things from the publics point of view. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

oh wow I would of figure that one out quick :P
I mean or not I saw people on the forums saying things like "randomly back from the dead?" with this info I would of thought CCP would do that anyways, standard DM/GM trick :P
I would of been like... wait... are they in the ship? WTF! no kill her in person you fools!

THIS.
It's not that bad. Reading a short summary of the plot of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Babylon 5, or any other long involved storyline will obviously leave the reader with a bunch of facts and only a basic understanding of how they fit together. A storyline actually requires the bits in between to make it a story. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

Have you read it and dislike it, or are you just talking out of your arse?
Read it, post some valid complaints (of which I'm, sure there will be quite a few), but don't go saying it's awful because you've read an eight paragraph summary, written in a matter-of-fact manner by someone who is attempting neither a review or a critique. Ok, so the "legendary ancient" in the Scope news was just, well, exaggeration by confused Gallente reporters or so? I can live with that. (Come home, CCP, all is forgotten! Well, assuming you can explain that little telepathy stunt... and let's agree now once and for all that no more Terran artifacts, 'kay? Telepathy and Terran artifacts are bad for you.)

Unsurprising, the rise of Heth was pretty obviously a conspiracy of some sort. What I want to know is if the novel made the whole rise to power actual make sense from a public standpoint.

I just completed the book and personally I enjoyed it immensely. I don't think the comments of some people in this thread are very well justified unless they've actually read the book.
If you haven't read the book, DO NOT think that your or anyone elses opinions of it can be in any way ground in reality. All you have to go on is a series of spoilers posted by some random guy. Those, minus the major plot points, are nothing like the actual book.
So, my advice to those who are sitting here complaining before actually reading the book is this: READ THE BOOK.
My only critisicm of it is purely based upon the fact that it contains so much information and revelations which people are going to have to buy the book to recieve. Hence, I do support the existence of this thread, but just remember that the way the spoilers are presented here does in no way present the full image of how they are presented in the book.
As the cloud with a silver lining to this: most of the info in the book would not be known by your own characters anyway.
