I act in EVE the same way I act in real life, however I once had a pirate alt and when playing that character I would happily gank helpless noobs all day. So I guess the level of separation between reality and the game is up to the player. -

Hmm.
RL is hard! U can't hit "Replay" or simply buy another ship! If you smack someone, u might end up getting one to your face as well, so I try to avoid that :)
Also the girls.. Compared to Exotic Dancers ofc.. Does not seem to "get on" from me telling them I have my own carrier!! :/ Perhaps purchasing a Titan with xxxx GTC's will make me superl33t? Will it fix my virginity as well? \o/
I guess I act normal in RL.. I think
In-eve : Fly around and attack random people , sometimes a glorious victory with juicy beartears to it. other times, total fail and another lesson learned
RL : Acting normally, and not attack random people

I'm definitely more outgoing in EVE than in real life. You'd never catch me making motivational speeches outside of EVE. It was actually a problem when I first started using voice comms, to be honest. I'm pretty introverted outside the interwebs. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

I'm more talkative and communicative in the game and forums than in RL (outside of what is necessary for work)... and then I'm pretty quiet in EvE.
Over the last years I've become very reclusive and talk as little as possible in RL, I've given up on my old friends and all social life outside of work and family. And I'm very happy with it.

those of you that act like griefers / pirates in game, i wonder how many of you had a really aweful time at school and were bullied ... cause my theory is this, your too shit scared to actually stand up for yourselves in r/l so therefore, eve or any other mmo is a safe way for you to inflict anger / hurt / mistrust without the worry of getting a smack in the mouth.
I am no pirate, i have never scammed and i certainly have never gone out of my way to ruin someones game time, but then again, i was never a bully, nor was i bullied ... just a curious theory...

very much the same both in the game and out, completely honest, light hearted and well humoured. I'd say i give no heed to the rpg aspect at all beyond the most basic levels of game mechanics (though the first thing that entered my mind upon reading your name was the cerberus HAC :P). I'm reasonably quiet and understand that sometimes what I want to say has no use, unless some cretinous internet alphamale insults me, upon which i'll put them back in their place.
So yeah, i'm me both ingame and out, how could I be anything else?

In Eve, there are little if any consequences, despite claims to the contrary. There are no real punishments, and perhaps more importantly, little if any social control. In fact, there seems to be a strong supportive culture for behaving like an *******. There are many groups that support and reinforce exluding of other large groups of people from the "us" circle, thus limiting or eliminating normal guilt for bad deeds done to "those people".
A large part of Eve is built around preying on the weak (whether that power relation is temporary or lasting), and again, without the inhibitors rl society has, well, this is what you get.
I firmly believe most people behave pretty much as is expected of them, in RL.
However, it's also worth remembering that most "bad" people irl, whether the common ******* or a career criminal, seldom see themselves as the "bad guy". Rather, they rationalize their behavior, often by blaming their victim.

Now, that's not quite what I said, Mr Stab Wounds. I'm talking about social mechanisms, which are similar in and out of the gane. The common ass-hole is more likely to be playing 'puter games then career criminals are.
Also, I think social control is more important then law enforcement, for the majority of people.

I agree. I think anonymity (such as internet anonymity) brings out a closer truth about our personalities than we'd like to admit. Internet anonymity is one of the closest environments we have to experiment on what we would be like if we were truely free to act as we wish and without consequence. I am not a psych, so obviously this is just my own personal and humble opinion.
Edit: I'd just like to clarify that I don't believe that because you shoot people in-game you'd shoot people in real life. The game is designed with the intent that we shoot each other and so we do. What I'm referring to is behavior. Griefing, taking pleasure behind other's misery, taunting, ridiculing, insulting, belittling, are all examples of behaviors I specifically am referring to.

Quoting this for truth, i have a hard time believing the "sweet sweet tears/empirewardeconnoobindycorp/newbiebaiting" crowd is the type of imo "good" person in real life that would for example give the class-punch bag a break.
Im not surprised there is so much resistance to this idea though, it probably shows people a bit too much about themselves that they would rather be blissfully unaware about. This is a good point. It is foolish to suggest that people who shoot other people in a game about shooting people would necessarily be violent in real life. This extra level of antagonism is very suggestive of the players true personality however.
Although, I would imagine that most players who behave at that extreme are kids, and thus inconsequential in real life. Perhaps that's just stereotypes colouring my view, I don't know. -

Edited by: Riho on 07/07/2008 19:15:12 Edited by: Riho on 07/07/2008 19:08:38 what im in ingame is not what im in Real Life. thats why i play this game... to get away from real life. its great... you can be a ass and get away whit it. dont have to worry about work problems and other real life problems... even if i only get a few hours a week its enough :)
i keep the game ME separate from my RL ME. its quite good as it keeps my addiction also under control :P
EDIT: and those idiots who claim that ppl who act evil ingame are mentally disturbed because they want to do it in RL but cant beacuse of the rules... are the ones really the disturbed ones. its a ROLE PLAY GAME.... you are mixing real life whit a GAME... you guys should go see a shrink... eve does not equal real life.
so that i killed someone in a GAME means im a potential murderer in real life.... bloody hell

I'm both way nicer and much more of a *ss**** in EVE. For instance: I can't imagine travelling 10 blocks to pick up a new car for one of my co-workers...but 10 jumps to grab someone a new ship.... and while I've never ransomed someone in Real Life, I'd like to assume that I wouldn't kill them after they paid.
Also (and I find this very ironic), I'm broke way more in-game than in real-life --

I took off in my own car but unfortunately I was intercepted by the police who also shot up my vehicle. It was all good though, I got out and walked off up the street and had a mate pick up the groceries.

The game is designed with the intent we shoot each other and so we do. What I'm referring to is behavior. Griefing, taking pleasure behind other's misery, taunting, ridiculing, insulting, belittling, are all examples of behaviors I specifically refer to.
It's easy to shoot some pixels that are being controlled by another player. Shooting them in RL is a different matter entirely and there are not so many as yu'd think who could actually do it. Ask anyone who has been in the armed forces and fought in a war, it's really hard to point a gun at someone and pull the trigger knowing you are taking a human life. So many freeze up at that point and just can't pull the trigger.
As for the rest, it common for people to do that, take a look around at how frequently it goes on. How many times has this been used on you to goad you into a fight? It's quite common that this sort of behaviour is used to goad people in authority into reacting which could cost them their jobs. Don't try this on a police officer though, they can do the same back and are usually better at it. The problem is that they have the full power of the law behind them when you react

Thank you for proving my point so eloquently. That was perfect. You do it here because you can get away with it. If you were a jerk in RL there would be RL conequences. I'm not saying anything about "OMG, I SHOOTZ PPL IN EVE NOW I'M GONNA BE A MURDERER IN RL." That's a falehood anyway, in EVE there is no death. Only the inconvenience of losing some isk and possibly some SP. You come here to inconvenience someone, because you were inconvenienced that day, taking a little measure of revenge and releasing your negative emotions. Thats healthy.

EVE life, I have been a noobie care bear, blown to bits in 0.0, done the merc work, playing the pirate that will blow you up if you donÆt pay me.
RL, fairly well composed father of 2, have a stable family, have a job I like, never been the bully or had my head down the toilet.
Why do I blow other peoples ships up in EVE ? Why do I take other players isk in EVE ?
Why do actors really like playing the bad guy in movies ? Why is often the bad guy more fun to watch then the hero in the movies ?
Perhaps we are all brain damaged, I donÆt know, but its fun, pure and simple, I donÆt need to hate you to ransom you, I donÆt need to hold a grudge against anyone to blow them up, its EVE, a game based around blowing other people up.
Fine, there might be mentally ill individuals playing the games, but, not every pirate that kills you for the five hundred and one time is a lifeless maggot sitting the parents basement feeling angsty over having had there underwear pulled down throughout all his school years.
EVE = PVP Game = your shit is going to blow up.

In EVE I play as a character. That character plays to the rules of that society, not RL society. In EVE there's very little retribution for anything so it naturally leads characters doing "bad" things.
I decided for a week or so to salvage wrecks in missions. Apparently this made me a thief in real life and the sort of person who would murder somebody given the chance to get away with it.
Now i'm not perfect (I may have a sherry or two at the weekends ) but in game and out of game are two very seperate things for me. Whether I'd be different out of game given a different society to live in I don't know. In my opinion anybody who says they know how they would act having been brought up to a different set of rules is talking out their a*se.
Anyway Neaghan does not equal Me.

No. I was bullied at school to an extent and I have no desire to ruin anyone's day. I'd say it's more likely to be the bully at school is more likely to be a jerk in Eve as they can pick on people and get away with it.
The problem is defining who is the griefer bully and who is just an in character pirate.

In EVE i like chatting with people and am usually the one saying a lot of silly things and breaking the ice in newly formed corps with new members. In real life i am much more reserved and much less chatty especially with people i have just met and much more serious.
In EVE i have baited miners, camped and killed newbies in low sec, and scammed people. In real life i rarely get angry at other people. I even have trouble killing insects that crawl into my dwelling, i just take them outside. I also know a few ways to scam in real life, make some extra cash and get away with it without any consequences like in EVE. However i have never used any of these ways and being a poor student it is not like i don't need extra cash.
In EVE I like doing my own thing. I have trouble taking orders, flying in fleets, that just gets me bored very quickly. Also I get annoyed with people who are anal about enforcing rules. Same in real life. I do not abide laws very strictly and I am rarely bored because I always have some sort of my own projects going on.
Some people assume that if you kill a newbie or bait a miner or scam someone in EVE that deep down inside you are really trying to ruin that player's day. I have never concerned about ruining someone else's day. For me it is the high that I get from wining. For example I don't play tennis or poker with other people because i want to make them lose and get upset over it. I play because it gives me a high to win. Why is it that people assume if you pirate or scam that you are trying to grief others is beyond me. I guess it makes them feel morally superior to assume something like that.

Not speaking about you personally, but a lot of the time you don't have to assume pirates and scammers are out to grief others, they tell everyone that this is their goal. Obviously not everyone is like that, but a lot of the vocal ones are.

Not speaking about you personally, but a lot of the time you don't have to assume pirates and scammers are out to grief others, they tell everyone that this is their goal. Obviously not everyone is like that, but a lot of the vocal ones are.
"I love the taste of carebear tears", just how would you interpret that? Or "I've made x number of persons quit the game, I'm so proud of that"
I may be paraphrasing a bit.
The "carebear tears" bit comes from the big influx of special snowflakes who are violently and vocally opposed to accepting that someone can in any way beat them in a game or deprive them of game achievements. Pirates & so forth get the same amusement out of their foolish tears that, say, a professional football player might get out of seeing some new player try and sue them for assault and robbery for taking "his" ball away.
Incidentally, the logical corollary to the hypothesis that PvPers griefers were picked on at school is that the carebears complaining about them were the bullies that did the picking on. This being the case, why feel any sympathy...?
In actual fact, most of the pirates I meet in game are extremely nice people, often ready to help with advice or time or even stuff.

EVE is a game, it is not possible to be an *******/whatever negative term you want to use in a video game. There is no connection to be made between a game and real life.

Very well, that probably accounts for part of the posts containing that specific comment.
However, reading C&P for a while, you come across a whole motherload of people saying they love it when they get a negative reaction out of their victims, and it's not limited to tantrum reactions at all.
The plundering bunny may be a bit more direct about it then most in her/his stated goal of making people quit, but she's far from the only one.
EDIT: Lol, forget C&P, all one needs to do is read through this thread. Hell, even just this page, to see people professing love for making someone elses day worse.

I just really disagree with the people who say that
"if you kill people in game the you would do it in RL if you could get away with it."
Does that make all the FPS players murderers too? Or what about the RTS people who play starcraft and games like that, are they all hilter type people wanting to raise an army?
Piff maybe some of them, but i refuse to blieve that their is any relation.

You just quoted something nobody said. If you read carefully, it is about hurting someone emotionally. No-one here is so silly as to confuse virtual killing with real-life killing. I think single-player games would come closer to simulating that than respawning gamers. -- It may be that the old astrologers had the truth exactly reversed, when they believed that the stars controlled the destinies of men. The time may come when men control the destinies of stars. ACC |

Rather, they rationalize their behavior, often by blaming their victim.
totally true, most these d1ckheads in the game would probably be thieves and murderers in RL if there were no laws and police.

Damn you beat me
On topic: I'm much more proactive in Eve than in RL. My character is in a leadership position and ,I hope, enjoys some kind of respect from my corp members.
In RL I get a lot less respect and less people look up to me. Naturally I'm quieter in RL for that reason.
Fortunately playing Eve for over 4 years now has blurred the line between the RL me and the Eve me. Eve has changed me for the better and I'm proud of that, thanks CCP.

I am a little freer with my opinions in real life and I tend to be a little more reckless. I think that has something to do with the fact that if I make an ass out of myself in EVE then my corp or alliance may pay the price. Whereas in real life if I do stupid things I am typically the only on that can be held accountable for my actions. I am a little more masochistic Out of EVE vs In EVE.

You may want to start applying a bit of critical thinking to things you read on the net. Don't try and do it to everything straight away though; You might hurt yourself.

Oh greeat, we're down to personal insults now. Grats Malc.
Bottom line, there's a whole lot of people in this game who get their jollies from hurting other people (emotionally), and some of them are very open about it. Doesn't matter how many nice, helpful pirates you know, I know a couple too, doesn't change anything. Those guys are being occluded by the vocal and numerous diks.
