So far I'm the only one of my friends to experience this, but I get it without fail, every time I play eve now.
I launch eve, and while I'm in dock I am fine. I undock, play around (mission or just fly around) and then dock again. The instant I go to dock again I am hit by crazy lag that causes EVE to go extremely slow (it stutters doing anything). The lag affects my entire computer (Windows Vista x64 Ultimate). I've never had this before and I have no idea why it just started after the latest patch.
My system runs a core 2 duo at 2.6ghz, 4gb of ram, plenty of hdd space (sata 2) and an nvidia 8600gts. I have premium gfx and AA enabled but I've run this gfx setup for a while now with no problems until now (so I know the gfx settings aren't causing the lag).
Once I've docked and got the lag (and my entire system is affected), undocking or anything won't fix it. Sometimes undocking and staying in space does fix it, but if I dock again the lag is back (while in dock).
Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know how to fix this or what's causing it?

Nope, not hard drive related. The system runs just peachy and I've performed scandisks to check for any minor problems. EVE doesn't really write much data except for the game logs anyways, and if it were having problems I'd notice system errors (of which there aren't any for that).

Further checking shows that when docked and experiencing this lag, EVE is using about 50%+ CPU and is around 650MB of ram on my system.
I think this is a graphical problem - but it only started since the hotfix for having the cache setting actually work (which was a few patches ago). I've submitted a bug report (submitted another one before which I didn't know was related to this one, but it's exactly the same thing) - just wondering if I'm the only one with this or what...

nope, your not the only 1, there have been other people having the same problem, aswell as me too.
After i log in, within 5minutes i start to lag in the station, when i undock, the lag goes away and comes back every now and then, but while i am docked, the lag is constant, its allmost unplayable.
i have logs dating back from 2005 and eve ran perfectly on my system up untill the last few weeks, not sure which patch it was after that caused this. so i know its nothing to do with my computer, and only eve.
turning down the graphics, resolution, and going to classic mode do nothing, the lag still happends. my usual FPS in station is 60, and when this lag happends (constantly in station, every 5-10min in space) it drops to 7 FPS
i use: nvidia 8500gts, 3gb ram, at 2.2ghz, 120gb hd (71gb free space)
and so far i havnt noticed any respones from a GM to this issue on the forums. =/

What is your cache size setting? (Check this by pressing Esc and look in the Display and Graphics tab)
If you change this setting, does it have any effect on the problem you are experiencing?

iv tryed with the cashe size setting: low, none, and high
all 3 have had no effect on this FPS issue
i have also cleared the cashe via ingame, and had no effect.
one thing i have noticed tho, when i alt tab and check my system processes, fileexe for eve grows to 300,000K or sometimes 400,000K and my CPU reaches 50-60%. i also see spikes in the graph for CPU usage. not sure if this is normal or not, because i dont check my task manager often.
not sure what else the problem could be, all i know is that i havnt changed anything on my computer for the last year when i upgraded my graphic card. Then all of a sudden in the last few weeks i have gotten this problem.

Babo, you described pretty much *exactly* what I'm experiencing. I've cleared the cache a few times, tried messing with gfx settings here and there (I have AA to 16x though and I have not tried tuning that down yet - that's my next step).
I have filed a bug report and got a response from a BH saying they can't reproduce it and need more info. I have tried reproducing it a few times and so far I haven't been able to when the logserver is running which sucks.
Babo - the CPU spike is exactly what I notice too. When you're docked and you get the unbelievable lag (I'm not sure what my FPS is, but 7fps sounds about right) the CPU runs around 50% or more. Right now I have my cache set to high and it uses about 650-700MB of ram when I see this bug happening. As you say, tried changing the cache levels and it doesn't make a difference (restarted client too to make sure it took effect).
If anyone who gets this problem can capture logs showing the problem, we might get closer to a fix for it - however I'm certain it's something that was introduced after patch 56866 (it first started when one of the two hotfixes were applied, and has been apparent since then).

No, this doesn't seem to make a difference, however the first hotfix that tried to make that setting actually work is when this problem first became apparent. Perhaps there's a problem with the "fix" that makes that setting work now?
I'm more than willing to try and get you any logs you need to help fix this problem - it really sucks having to quit every time you dock just to get rid of the lag.

Edited by: desintox on 18/07/2008 01:37:16 I'm having something very similar, are you running more than 1 client by any chance? I haven't really noticed it much while running just 1 client but when I opened a 2nd client the same kind of problems start. It might be related to this topic: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=810031

No, this is running just one client and I'm getting this problem, however the two problems sound very, very similar - I wouldn't doubt if they are somehow related.

I get this sometimes while docked.
EVE uses almost 100% CPU, my paging file size doubles... and everything (except EVE, thankfully) barely responds at all. Not sure about RAM usage; I don't know how to check on that.
Oh, and turning off station environments doesn't actually turn them damn well off.
I'm using the old client (as in, not the premium one). ------------------

it only ever happens when i run eve. there has been much hair pulling.
im runing vista 32 pentium core-2 2.4ghz duel 4 gig ram nvidia 8800GTS 320 meg

Even with shadows off, i stil get this problem... even with smallest resolution, cashe size doesnt matter, eve voice off, sound off.
nothing matters and i used to be able to run eve with all settings on and turned up with no problems at all!
I even tryed a system restore to months ago when eve was running fine, no effect.
Im tellin u its got to be after 1 of those patches in the last month or so. prolly between EA and now.

I seem to be having the exact same problem. Been playing 21 days now and since last night, the game periodically (every 5 minutes or so, for 15 or more minutes) lags to an almost unplayable level.
I play on a 2.66 dual core intel processor with an Nvidia 8500GT. I have never had this problem before. I've restored to a point before I even installed the game and get the same result even now. I've checked for Windows update issues and found none. I've updated my video drivers but no effect. I have now noted the effect in other games I play (WoW and CoH). They start out fine but the framerate slows to an unplayable level.
It actually acts like a memory leak (checking my physical memory, I find out of 2029kb, only 45 are free, 1413 are cached, and at most, I may have an Internet Explorer and my antivirus software running at the same time)I just can't find which process is not letting go of active memory. What is really irritating, is that restarting the computer provides only a temporary fix...it eventually begins to lag again.

One common thing between us all appears to be the nVidia graphics cards 8000 series. Perhaps it's something to do with that... I've been trying to run the logserver and catch EVE with this bug but no luck yet since I'm having a tougher time reproducing it now that I removed the latest hotfix patch.
If we could get a Dev to look in to this issue more it would be VERY helpful, since there is certainly a problem here!

Its not just a 8800 series problem, it afects various rig setups. The way you described the problem it sounds like the EvE client is flooding your GPU with massive amount of data.

It's not the tracking IR thing - that's disabled for me and I've never enabled it.
I don't believe it's related to that "video card killer" thread - my system has no overheating problems and the first sign of a video card being overworked (as the OP describes) is that it would overheat.
The problem is completely solved by restarting the client, and usually by just undocking and going in to space (oddly enough with way more things to draw and such). It doesn't seem to be directly related to video card issues at all. It seems like EVE is somehow flooding the *CPU* instead, which indirectly causes lag visually because the CPU pre-renders some data apparently (so if the CPU is flooded with other requests, video will lag since it can't pre-render some video data before the GPU gets it). That's my take on it anyways - there's a setting in the nVidia CPL that says how many frames are pre-rendered by the CPU before the GPU gets them (and says setting it higher makes low FPS games smoother - I have it set to the default of 3) which is where I'm coming up with this assumption.

yeh i'm definitely having a problem similar to this, only mine is always down to 40 fps as soon as i log, it won't go past 42 fps despite all attempts, and cache shouldn't be a problem when i have 3 gb's of free ddr2 800mhz ram, but even when cleared nothing changes.
And it's not just the 8xxx series i have a 9600 gt with same problem. I even OC'd it some and the problem is definitely client related cause i still get 40 fps.
I know 40 fps is still playable but a very scary drop from 70-80fps from a few weeks back last time i logged in.

I have had a similar issue with my 8800 + vista 64. The fix is simple, just alt-tab out of eve and back in again. Graphics lag be gone.

You explain this well Im getting the exact same problem exactly as u describe it.

I play in windowed mode - alt tabbing is being done all the time (well, not actually alt-tabbing, but I swap to different apps constantly). Doesn't fix this particular problem.

I had this same problem since empyrean age but setting the present interval under display and graphics to default seems to eliminate the problem for me, and that's with premium graphics. I get 25 more fps with interval set to immediate but then i get the horrible station lag.

I have read somewhere as to what that present interval setting does - it's apparently for vsync. Setting it to default is whatever your video card defaults to, immediate is vsync off, and the other setting is vsync enabled... so yes, setting it to something other than immediate will probably drop your FPS since vsync tends to do that.
I have no vsync enabled though - I've tried interval default and immediate and since they're already what I use, no change in FPS or this bug. Thankfully I have recently experienced the bug while running the logserver so CCP now has some logfiles to rummage through with this bug hopefully logged in the events.

Another update - I have tried disabling the "load station environment" setting in the client, and it apparently makes no difference in the CPU usage when encountering this bug, so it's certainly not visual GPU lag or anything... it's something with CPU specifically.

It may be that your system is rendering lots of pages when docked, that might be making the graphics card overheat and then start glitching.
Have you tried changing the graphics setting Present Interval = Interval One?
This should make your gfx card only do a maximum frame rate of 60fps or whatever your laptop (or other flat screen) display can show.

Setting the the interval to default didn't work, just takes longer before the first lag spike appears.
Also tried both interval 1 and 2 and so far haven't lagged at interval 2 but there my fps is down to 30. I think nutbar is right about that it's cpu related, i also get the 50 to 60% increase in cpu activity when eve lags out.
And like Babo Warrior i changed nothing in my system and ran eve perfectly fine before one of the emp age patches, can't remember which one though.
