Originally by: Aclyn Seriy Could you please explain what effect the change in timecode length, price and availability will have on new players? And also to players that have not yet joined this community?
Sure! Lets say Fred is Aclyn's friend and she has been telling him about the great game Eve online and he's ready to try it. Fred downloads the trial and as expected by the end of it is just starting to grasp the game and is favorable to try some more but not convinced. Not long ago Aclyn could have sent here friend 150M isk to allow him to play the game for another month. It was not a huge isk investment and free money wise to both partys.
Now Aclyn is looking at sending almost half a billion isk to give him two months. She is FAR less likely to do so, especially because he is unsure.
Larry is a new player, he tried the trial and bought the game on his creditcard and is enjoying his free month for paying the full $20. He may find a good corp is hard to find because there may be less players in his SP range. He may find the market for Rifters to be over a quarter million each before buying fittings that are also inflated. At this point he's not thinking market forces cause this ship to cost me a million isk, he's likely thinking "this crap is too expensive when my level one agent barely gives me 30,000 isk rewards. He's got a bunch of rat loot on the market but it's not selling.
Inflation and stagnation are unfavorable and felt most by new to mid players. Eve's low class.
Originally by: Aclyn Seriy Those of us that enjoy EVE will stay no matter what and those that don't will leave. A change in GTC price will undoubtedly have a small impact on the number of active accounts but I honestly can't see it making that big a difference. EVE has steadily continued to increase its playerbase over the years and will no doubt continue to do so, people will eventually adapt to the new system and carry on as they always have and those that can't or won't adapt will leave, but then that would always have happened.
Change happens, sometimes its small and sometimes its large, we all have to get used to it. Stagnation is death no matter what business you are in.
I agree the long time players will not quit eve. They WILL reduce the number of alt accounts they run. I disagree the number of active accounts that are alt accounts and thus subject to being dropped are low. I argue that they are signifigant. However I also agree CCP will be fine in the end. Eve will not die. I only forcast a drop in active accounts short term and a drop in growth long term.

I've only seen the ore market deflate and thats the market a new player needs high. Ship and fitting prices on tech 1 goods that can be produced by new players is also in the gutter. Where as a nice named missle launcher costs more than ever.
As far as what people say in SAK chat, who can tell if it's true?

Therefore, the American dollar is now worth **** all compared to what it was when the CCP marketing department made up the prices for GTCs in US dollars (which are also sold in other currencies than the US dollars).
Since the US dollar is now worth **** all, it's basic math that, to make as much profit in their (NON-AMERICAN) currency as they did before the massive inflation of the US dollar, the US prices have to be increased. In case you haven't noticed, ONLY the US prices have been increased, since the rest of the world's economies aren't on a highway to hell yet.

Very nice, I congratulate your fail. I personally payed by Visa per month. The US credit card subscription price HAS NOT CHANGED. So your argument only would be valid to GTCs. I'll play along though. Now support why the increase in price (I will grant you exchange rates) has caused the timecode options to be reduced to one, and why the increase in price has caused CCP to backorder the timecodes. Explain how these factors are not causing people to close thier alt accounts.

Theres one thing wrong with your logic on the game Bob the community isnt anti social just most the 0.0 high horse boys are anti social there are plenty of corps especially for new players to get into and have fun. Im personally only about a 2month old character and I gotta say im impressed in how much the community especially when it comes to new players is helpful. Ive had nothing but help from people the minute ive joined the game. All it takes is a simple question in local/corp and your set.
So before you think the community sucks in this game go join WoW where I came from and quit after playing it for 3 1/2 years its the worst community in any MMO ive seen its a elitist game if your not max level they dont give a damn about you. As for the price its called get a credit card its not hard hell you can use your damn debit card so stop complaining and play.

Firstly I congratulate your skill at reading comprehension. You have out classed many who have replied here. I also respect your not latching onto only one thing that has little to nothing to do with the discussion. The Lack of insulting ones nation of origin is also nice. Now to your post.
As you can see in this thread there are many people who are anti-social. I assure you there are helpfull people in all MMOs, and Eve makes it easier to find them as we are all on the same server in that respect. I have had enough arguments to defeat my assumptions about the impact on new players of the timecard change. You have remeinded me there are just some damn fine people playing this game. So formally:
I was wrong the impact on truely new players will be smaller then I had thought.
As far as the MONEY get off of it. The thread was never about $5, I don't care about $5, Anyone and everyone who ever thought the damned $5 meant a damn thing to me beyond the ironic claim of "We charge more because it's a premium product". And if you can't see marketing's claim of such to be complete crap I can't help you.

I have no idea why people make such a big deal about "the 2 free expansions" a year, hell the entire game in terms of gigs is tiny compared to the other mmorpg's and there expansions are not real expansions at all but simple updates no way there big enough to be called expansions.
Also half the people in eve have had nothing from their last 2 updates, you flight in fleet battles you use the old graphics cause of lag and if your a 00 aliance member fw does not exist to you

If only those who ponder to play WoW instead of Eve just got over their doubts and head for WoW straight away instead of comparing the two games on the forum in an attempt to make WoW into some kind of example to strive for. I doubt I would miss them in Eve.

Surely comparing Eve to WoW is like comparing an apple to a banana?
Or... more appropriately: comparing a bastard sword with a railgun.
Ok, so some people will be attracted to both games but not everyone - Sci-fi types will play Eve, fantasy types with play WoW, non-RP types will chose whichever fits their play style and people will whine at both games.
Personally I RP in Eve as a Matari (fun) - I gave up on RPing in fantasy games due to an influx of god-mode players who insisted they were Goki or whatever his name is from the castrated, americanised anime that is Dragonball Z...
Upshot: people who want a challenge will play Eve, people who want wrapping in cotton wool should play WoW or Runescape - personally I *like* the idea that my BC could get blown from under me the next time I undock, I'm not going to magically save 3 or all of my items because the devs listened to the babies out there.

Edited by: Saint Hauler on 14/07/2008 00:15:01 Edited by: Saint Hauler on 14/07/2008 00:13:56 Well - I think the 'vastly' increased cost of Eve in comparison to WoW wont hurt it at all - both are designed for entirely different playerbases.
Firstly, eve requires patience to skill up, but not a lot of spare time. Most really young mmorpg player lack patience, but have a lot of spare time on their hands to grind their characters to be really evil Orkz or whatever.
As soon as you get a job, you will notice that your spare time will decrease drastically and you are happy that your toon learns whilst you're not even logged in as compared to do repetitive idiotic quests all over again.
So basically, despite never having even tried WoW, I am pretty confident I will not change because it costs 5$ less than eve - simply because:
I.
I wouldn't play WoW if I was payed for it.
II.
I work about 60 hrs a week, a 60 day GTC is worth about 1-2 hours of my working time - now if I had some ingame opportunity to make 400 mill/hour I would probably consider making money ingame. As I lack spare time and can only make about 20 mill/ hour ingame, I don't bother making money ingame all that much - and those 5$ are really irrelevant to me - now if some kid has to run 5 additional l4's in order to have me pay for his next two months of mindless high-sec numbness, I don't give a damn tbh...

We were all new once. Most of us have not been playing since beta. We were all "have nots" once.
Some people whined and complained, were generally inept, and/or completely failed to break into this community. The rest of us managed, and now feel entitled to say what we want. And we are entitled to do so.

I thought I was on topic. I will give it another try.
Originally by: Bob T'Miner So let me get this straight.
60 day card of World of Warcraft is $30 USD. It has over 10 million active accounts. 60 day code for Eve Online is $35 USD. It has(read had) 300 thousand active accounts. We pay $5 more because it is a "Premium" product. So Eve is Premium over World of Warcraft.....debateable.
Pretty much everything is debatable. If you don’t think Eve is a premium, then so be it. Why you would doubt that I do not know since you have not explained yourself.
Originally by: Bob T'Miner Number of active accounts take a nosedive. In-game economy suffers further.
Where do you get this information about nosedives and a suffering in-game economy?
Originally by: Bob T'Miner Now credit card customers decide to go back to WoW because it has pleanty of people to play with and costs less.
Again, where do you get your information that credit card customers go back to WoW? Do you have a source the rest of us don’t have? Or are credit card customers = you?
Originally by: Bob T'Miner All of this means a dramatic drop in active accounts over the next 4 to 6 months. CCP takes the loss, continues to stand behind marketing, and tries to make it work with a shrinking player base.
You seem to state an obvious fact about a dramatic drop in the coming 4-6 months. What do you base this upon? Are you qualified to make such estimations? Also, if your divinations come to be true, how do you know how CCP will act? Inside source?
Originally by: Bob T'Miner Perhaps the smaller player base will make the game even more "premium".
Irony, yes, I got that. Tell me, what does premium mean for you? You have not even touched that in your post. Is premium = cheapest product?
Originally by: Bob T'Miner Add that to a large portion of the playerbase being anti-social anyway and you may see how an already complex game as Eve can become less friendly to newer players who do not have the connections you may have.
Yes, I agree that it can be tough for new players. I have found plenty of social people in Eve, though. Perhaps people are just anti-social around you?
Originally by: Bob T'Miner How much of the "fun" you are having can you see a newer or less successful player having? Joe Average player plays the game that is more fun.
If they think the same thing as I is fun, then they should have no problem having fun. My first character, made 2006, joined 0.0 and started PvPing after 5 days in game. I had plenty of fun.
Originally by: Bob T'Miner Firstly I congratulate your skill at reading comprehension. You have out classed many who have replied here.

Originally by: Bob T'Miner As you can see in this thread there are many people who are anti-social.
Yeah, tell me about it. Though I suspect most people have read whining threads similar to this many times over, which can be a reason why they don’t throw flowers at you.
