Why do most of the battleship have so few gun ports? From what I know most big battleships have a few large gun turrets 8 big guns, some times medium rage guns and a bunch of small gun turrets (16 to 20 ) aa guns.

Edited by: Bai ZongTong on 16/07/2008 01:48:42 if thats the case, bigger ships will always outgun small ships.
then you have the set formula that bigger = better like other MMORPGs.
many like eve in the sense that it is possible to kill a BS in a frig (flexibility). where as in other MMOPRGs, it is impossible to kill a lv 70 character with multiple lv 60s.

But by having the ship classes you invite the bigger is better to some degree principal. ItÆs damn hard for smaller class ship to down there larger counter parts. ThatÆs the whole point behind carrier, battlecruiser, battleship, corvette, cruiser, destroyer and frigate. ItÆs the food chain of warfare. Smaller classes support the larger classes. Or run from them. Flexibility comes form the combination of ships and strategy in battle.

No i think he points quite clearly that your RL reasoning is flawed. And completely breaks down for balance purposes. Besides that's what Drone space on BSes are for. _______________

err why.
Do you think if CCP were to double gun slots, that you'd get more DPS? Like they'd completely forget to nerf the damage per gun by half?

1st who are you to declare what's realistic in a fantasy world.
2nd EVE's systems are modular since ships are owned by a private market. It's not like other fantasy realms where each and every ship is custom made. It would make sense to have these things set up in an easy to fit and understand way.
3rd It's called "balance". _______________

It's a gameplay issue, mainly. You would think that battleships would have tons of ships like they do in other games, books, movies, and shows, but there would be no reason to fly anything smaller than a battleship.
That said, it would be cool if they added a visual effect to make it look like you were shooting tons of guns with shots flying everywhere.
Eve should look like this, even if the actual mechanics remain unchanged. (note: it gets good about a quarter of the way through the video)

Fantasy
Sci-Fi
The point of sci-fi is that it is realistic, or at least plausible. Otherwise, it's fantasy.
Go back to WoW and play with your elves if you don't understand the difference.

Dont be such a picky nerd. He used the term "fantasy world" as an opposite to the "real world", pointing out that it doesnt have to follow RL rules, not as genre term.
To the OP - INITIALLY EvE ships have been designed around the same idea as many other MMOs, that players will progress from smaller ships to bigger ones. This idea was rejected (or at least dramatically changed) very early, when tracking, missile damage mechanics and other things like that were introduced.
I understand your lack of suspension of disbelief - just like you, I would think that in realm of EvE, with the way combat is taking place it will be the first thought of a battleship designer - "hey, lets stick a gazzzillion small railguns on it, right next to those huge bombardment guns, to fend off the interceptors!".
But remember, its a geme. If you do that, it will COMPLETELY RUIN current balance of ship classes and will, by opinion of most (including me), spoil the EvE PvP combat forever.
So please, suspend your disbelief and accept the fantasy world as it it. If you like believable stuff, play HomePlanet spacefighter simulator, which has newtonian physics, or OrbiterSim, which has no pew-pew but is very realistic :)

So what part of Blob warfare needs balance in ship classes and has not spoiled EVE PVP combat forever?

I do like the look of that, with the tracer fire going every which way and ships having sequences of explosions ripping through their hulls before they die,but I can imagine the lag being unbearable. |

This could be implemented by bringing in the tiers for frigate, cruiser, battleship like: standard missile bay, assault missile bay, assault missile battery (all using standard missiles) and 150mm auto-cannon, dual 180mm auto-cannon, quad 200mm auto-cannon and equivalents for hybrid and laser types.
the curios thing is that the Dual 180mm uses Medium ammo, so I suppose my proposed Quad 200mm Auto-Cannon would use Large ammo.

If a game was being developed that did this, it could be balanced by having the larger ship classes require multiple players to pilot them.
So a BS could fight off ten frigates single handedly due to its multitudinous guns, but would also require ten people to fly it. Obviously this would only make sense in the context of a game where ships required complex management, rather than just warping into battle and either winning or exploding ten seconds later. -

Another way to balance it would be to give smaller ships a precision targeting ability similar to the one in Nexus and frigates could target critical ship systems and cripple turrets or damage engines but not really have the firepower to take a large ship down.
