When mining (no matter where) lock onto a few asteroids and keep 1 or 2 of your locks empty. Then goto the scanner settings and check off [asteroids].
That way, any ratspawn will appear as a sitting duck on your scanner. Lock on the closest, and when in range of your guns, let them have it. Another way is letting them target you and hit you 1st, then launch your drones, they will automaticly lock on the rats when they come in range and fly off to have fun. Rats won't change their target aslong as your ship is intact.
Train up your Scout Drone Skill (range), Heavy Drones (power), Targetting (one extra target per level) and Long Range Targetting.

only little thing about defence wile mining, if you tell your drones to attack and then give them no orders they will eventualy come back to orbit and then will attack anything that locks you this can be a big help of big problem depending on the security status of the system. in low sec letting them do this will help you against rats and pirates in higher sec it might see concord hulling you when some noob locks you
oh any use can's when hauling meens they cant see what your carrying + you get extra space.

Remember to sleep once in a while, only not while you playing or travelling long distances afk, even in empire. About half the ships I've lost were because I decided to "rest my eyes" for a minute in my comfy chair or had dragged the computer over by the bed.

When you feel that you have enough experience to venture into low sec space for the first time, either to mine some of the better ore or hunt some of the bigger rats, keep your eyes peeled for PC pirates who are on the lookout for people such as you. If another player jumps in while you are locked in combat with some NPC rats then unlock your targets and jump to a pre-determined safe area ASAP, even if you are winning the fight, chances are you are too busy to check them out for security rating, your shields will have taken a beeting and be low and your guns will need re-loading, he will hit you hard with some torpedos, finish off the remaining rats and jump in to scoop up all the loot (including all the T2 modules that survived your ship being killed) if you are fighting NPC rats and there is a shuttle hovering around, chances are he is an ALT sussing you out and getting ready to go back to his hanger to get his BS and come kick your ass. These people are oppertunist space bullies but that's life, be ready for them and remember, always have an escape plan when traveling or fighting in low sec space.

Edited by: Valen Manaan on 25/11/2004 08:55:39 When playing arround in <0.5 space, and you get a lock from another player when aproaching a jumpgate or station, do not DO NOT return fire. Sometimes newer player panic after getting a lock from another player or asume it is a NPC. When you shoot first, sentry guns will eat you, and the other player will loot your remains, and laugh at you in local.
When playing arroun in <0.5 space and you get a invite for a gang by another player, unkown to you, reject the invitation and check his info, chances are that he has a very low security rate (wanted probably) or that his corp is at war at you. When you accept the invite for gang he is able to warp to you, if he is in the same location system as you, even if you are at a savespot (which are of little use, cause of new scanning abilities). If he has ebil intentions he will probably be after YOU. In case of lonely mining or NPC hunting, or doing missions, set 'autoreject invite gang' in the option menu.
Don't play eve when your GF of wife is giving birth to your child...
