Loosing ships, items and getting podded, is all a healthy part of EVE. However, there are several ways to increase the safety of your characters and minimize potential losses. I guess most of you allready know how to use most of the features I will list. Nevertheless, you would be surprised to know how many cases we see, where players could have avoided big losses by just using simple ingame features and being a bit more careful. So here below Im going to list 10 useful safety measures that can help to keep your clone contract unused.
- 1. Dont play the game in AFK mode. This game is not designed with this kind of playing style in mind and you should NEVER consider your ship and character safe while being away from your computer.
2. Enter space with security status below 0.5 at own risk. You can NEVER expect to be safe in unsecure space regardless of sentry guns and such.
3. Insure all ships you are using, especially the expensive ones. Since the the time of an insurance contract was changed to 12 weeks, it makes sense without doubt to buy the most expensive "platinum" type of insurnace. At least for those who play quite fequently.
4. Don't expect CONCORD to keep you immune to attacks or ship losses. Like in the real world, law enforcers often arrive too late at the scene of the crime and even though being able to punish the criminal, can't always prevent the crime.
5. Don't rely on Sentry Guns to keep you a 100% safe. Especially not when travelling in unsecure space. There are several tactical ways to avoid sentry gun fire, that are NOT considered to be an exploit.
6. Use map filters such as "ships destroyed in the last hour" to spot possible player pirate camps and other dangerous areas.
7. Use the local chat channel to see whats happening within the system when you have just jumped in.
8. Monitor your faction standing closely. If you have a negative standing (-2.0 or more) against any faction you can expect them to attack you on sight.
9. Use Warp Core Stabilizers to avoid being warp jammed. The more, the merrier.
10. Use the auto-scanner and set it to alert you when anyone in scanning range is a potential threat to you.
Or better yet, always expect the worst, trust noone and never leave station .
Anyone who has good safety related tricks up his sleave, please feel free to contribute to this post. I hope this is of any help, especially for some of you new players.
Stay out of trouble and enjoy EVE!

When doing NPC combat missions, always set an out of system destination before warping to the mission way point.
That way if it all goes wrong you can (hopefully) jump that little bit quicker by just pressing the big yellow auto pilot button.

Different types of ammo have different ranges. Firstly right-click your gun and check it's attributes to see the optimal range. Then fit some ammo/crystal to it and re-check that range. By choosing long-range ammo, you can for the most part stay clear of enemy fire when up against NPCs. Try to stay at your optimal range

I am doing agent mission to Caldari about 3 weeks. My stading with Gallente less then -1, so i will reach -2 soon. The problem is my corp hangar is in Gallente space. What should i do? I have to stop doing agent missons and go minening?

NO, start doing Gallente missions: Just coz you are Caldari, doesn`t mean you cannot do Gallente missions! (Btw, if you are not mining at all, you are weird) Corp Chief Engineer |

It tooks a long time to reach again a third level agent, any other alternative? Really I don't uderstand this standing system. Gallente and Caladari maybe hate each other, but they don't declare war. If i do a lot of agent missions i can't fly freely in the empire. They treat me like a pirate. Why

Trust nobody 100%. If it sounds too good to be true, it very often is. Deliver nothing, if a player wants your goods bad enough, they will travel to you. If they dont want to travel, somebody else will. Inspect all goods you are buying from another player by right-clicking it while it's in the trade window and always before you click the accept button. There are plenty of opportunities to scam and, unfortunately, plenty of people who enjoy doing it. Hoarder class ships have been sold as Armageddon Battleships before now!

The Caldari and the Gallente used to be at war... they still hate each other. That's why they are on oposing factions. If you dont want to lower one while raising another, go do missions for Interbus or Sisters of Eve. They raise faction with all 4 races. Another side note for SoE is that they are the only corp that has agents for all implant types. This means once you hit L3 with SoE, you wont have to worry about switching to another corp unles syou want faction for a station you are refining at.

Then I suggest speeding up things like mining and travel, atleast in empire space. Even with the odd rat, it's hard to stay awake wile mining, and traveling is mindless. Heck, I usually watch TV & mine at the same time. A lot of this game involves "boring" tasks that encourage going AFK or not paying much attention.
Not sure how you would make basic mining it's self more entertaining ... maybe make it sorta a mini-game where you could get some extra ore, might be fun. Traveling in empire would be faster if the jump range on gates was increased.
My tip would be to find some people you enjoy chatting with, so when gameplay slows down a little, you can stay frosty & aware of any dangers that might pop up.

hi just wanted to add a new hint for beginners. if they just after starting and they are planning to go hunting npc's to make sure that the have the right clone made up in the medical centre as if the skill points are higher then what they have they will lose them...make sure your skill points match that of your clone as it is frustrating to lose skill points....

If one does insist on afk mining, here are some things to make it a little safer.
- 1. Use an Industrial Ship and mine directly into your Cargo Hold.
- 2. Mine in 1.0 security space, there are NO npc Rats, and if a players security rating falls low enough they aren't allowed to enter either.
- 3. Stay close to your computer and check occasionally to make sure everything is status quo.
The same rules apply when autopilot travelling, stay close, the lower the security rating of the systems you're in, the closer you should stay. Strength and Honor On the wings of the Pegasus |

Using a laptop with wireless a wireless network means you never have to afk mine... whether im cooking, cleaning (yeah right!) or even taking a dump... I'm never afk cos my virtual bridge comes with me
an alternative is to get a wireless-touchscreen monitor thingy (i saw one on the web somewhere a while ago)
another alternative is to crank up the volume real loud so you can hear whats going on from anywhere

A possible solution to the AFK problem:
I purchased a set of wireless headphones ($30 sale @ fry's). When I'm afk I listen for the telltale sound of a ship locking on. Make sure you have your desktop volume up all the way, though. If the volume is low on your pooter, the headphones will not recieve a signal. To make the sound bearable, play some songs in the background.

When mining (no matter where) lock onto a few asteroids and keep 1 or 2 of your locks empty. Then goto the scanner settings and check off [asteroids].
That way, any ratspawn will appear as a sitting duck on your scanner. Lock on the closest, and when in range of your guns, let them have it. Another way is letting them target you and hit you 1st, then launch your drones, they will automaticly lock on the rats when they come in range and fly off to have fun. Rats won't change their target aslong as your ship is intact.
Train up your Scout Drone Skill (range), Heavy Drones (power), Targetting (one extra target per level) and Long Range Targetting.

only little thing about defence wile mining, if you tell your drones to attack and then give them no orders they will eventualy come back to orbit and then will attack anything that locks you this can be a big help of big problem depending on the security status of the system. in low sec letting them do this will help you against rats and pirates in higher sec it might see concord hulling you when some noob locks you
oh any use can's when hauling meens they cant see what your carrying + you get extra space.

Remember to sleep once in a while, only not while you playing or travelling long distances afk, even in empire. About half the ships I've lost were because I decided to "rest my eyes" for a minute in my comfy chair or had dragged the computer over by the bed.

When you feel that you have enough experience to venture into low sec space for the first time, either to mine some of the better ore or hunt some of the bigger rats, keep your eyes peeled for PC pirates who are on the lookout for people such as you. If another player jumps in while you are locked in combat with some NPC rats then unlock your targets and jump to a pre-determined safe area ASAP, even if you are winning the fight, chances are you are too busy to check them out for security rating, your shields will have taken a beeting and be low and your guns will need re-loading, he will hit you hard with some torpedos, finish off the remaining rats and jump in to scoop up all the loot (including all the T2 modules that survived your ship being killed) if you are fighting NPC rats and there is a shuttle hovering around, chances are he is an ALT sussing you out and getting ready to go back to his hanger to get his BS and come kick your ass. These people are oppertunist space bullies but that's life, be ready for them and remember, always have an escape plan when traveling or fighting in low sec space.

Sometimes newer player panic after getting a lock from another player or asume it is a NPC. When you shoot first, sentry guns will eat you, and the other player will loot your remains, and laugh at you in local.
When playing arroun in <0.5 space and you get a invite for a gang by another player, unkown to you, reject the invitation and check his info, chances are that he has a very low security rate (wanted probably) or that his corp is at war at you. When you accept the invite for gang he is able to warp to you, if he is in the same location system as you, even if you are at a savespot (which are of little use, cause of new scanning abilities). If he has ebil intentions he will probably be after YOU. In case of lonely mining or NPC hunting, or doing missions, set 'autoreject invite gang' in the option menu.

Ive got one suggestion for all NEW players. Dont enter 0.0 when you are still in the NPC corps. Almost all 0.0 corporations will shoot on players in NPC corps, as they are considred to be alts. Just a friendly warning that will save you a lot of ships :).

If you do end up getting attacked by someone and happen to win, think twice about podding them if in 0.1 or higher.. this is considered an act of aggression, and you'll feel kinda silly when you warp into a station to show your friends the corpse and get splatted all over the system by a sentry gun |

Industrials make poor miners, their designed to be haulers. Once you have one make getting the Anchoring skill (Its in corporations) & some Giant Secure containers a priority.
Then go to a .7 system & from your cargo hold 'launch' the container 'for self' 5 km from anything else (that includes popped roids from my experience).
Then anchor it. You now have a permamnent canister worth 3900 storeage that weights 3000 :D. That can be hauled using your Indy & mined into from your races best mining ship. The perversity of the Universe tends towards a maximum - O'Toole's Corollary of Finagle's Law |

About AFK mining and traveling... a tip I was given that works REALLY well is to run EVE in windowed mode, and then just surf the web or what have you. That what you're not bored to death, and can easily respond to threats.

Also another thing to take note when AFK mining in a industry, even if you are in safe space check that you haven't eaten the asteroid up and need to target another one or you could be AFK for a hour thinking your mining when really your not.

My biggest tip would be, expect to lose things, and don't overstretch your finances. Sure, you might be able to sell everything you own to get that shiny new battleship, but you can't stretch to insurance....what happens if you lose it? You'll be back to square one in your newb frigate.
Don't go getting that shiny new ship until you can afford the ship, the fittings, and the insurance, without selling what you already use. That way, if your pride and joy goes down the tubes, you're not broke, and can go back to using what you had before, to top yourself up and afford a replacement.
Losing ships is inevitable...but with proper planning it should never leave you broke and newb-shipped.

Don't forget you can refine that rubbishy loot you pick up and can't sell (or can't be arsed to sell). You get lovely shiny minerals back, and those can be sold or stockpiled. --------------------------- |

Just thought of one that a lot of people new players seem not to know but would be better off knowing.
Say you see someone in a Battleship heading for a gate in 0.4 - 0.1 that you're also heading for. If you see said Battleship pilot activate shield hardeners (looks like a shiny bubble round the ship, if it's armour hardeners you can't see) and align for a planet or something, warp away pronto. It means you about to get ganked, boy. _________________

Edited by: NexusGray on 12/04/2005 06:26:23 some more useful tips for new players: 1) i heard this in one of the stations, one guy tried to attack a bill board in a 1.0 system near the warp gate...
the billborad got a frag... DO NOT attack billboards they are extrimly dangerous! :) DO NOT attack convoys in 0.7 systems (i tried this out when i just started) Try and not enter 0.4-0.0 systems alot of buckaneers and pirates lurk there especialy in mining sites If u just bought a new fansy ship insure it!(like PANZER said) i lost 2 merlins and 1 cormorant becoz of this i didnt insure them

Good post. I'd like to add 3 points to this
1. Always buy a clone. These are available from many stations. (think they are listed as medical facilities on the map). That way if you die at least you don't lose your skills points.
2. Keep the clone up to date. The more you train the more expensive clones get. But keep it up to date else you are training skills for no reason. You may seem immortal but one day you will die
3. If you do (and you probably will) venture to 0.0 just to have a look. Check the regional information (normally someone in help channel can help you.). Many 0.0 areas are "owned" by alliances and many require a permit to be there. No permit means death generally, many times without even being ask. Enter at your own risk
And well, welcome to space

When doing NPC combat missions, always set an out of system destination before warping to the mission way point.
That way if it all goes wrong you can (hopefully) jump that little bit quicker by just pressing the big yellow auto pilot button.

That sounds like good advice - sometimes it seems to take forever for your ship to swing round before it warps to safety, while your hull is rapidly being burnt away. But how do you do it? How can you line up on a destination without actually setting off?

Let me add one more little tip to this. DO NOT approach asteroids too closely, especially in low sec space. When you try to warp, your speed will be a virtual crawl until you get far enough away from the 'roid. By then, you may be dead, since you can't break out of warp. |

Always check the details of a mission before accepting to see if it is doable.
And to gauge whether or not you can complete a deadspace mission on your own, check the loyalty points given. Higher loyalty points indicate a more difficult mission. Keeping track of what level of combat you can handle will keep you from accepting deadly missions.

I have some safety tips aswell. I didnt have patience to read thru whole thread so it might said before:
1. Avoid bottleneck(unsecure systems with only 2 stargates in it) systems. You can expect to get gate ganked there.
2. Avoid unsecure systems with only 1 station in it. You will prolly get station camped sooner or later.
3. Run if you see me in local(unless you're looking for pirates offcourse) .

when doing dead space missions bookmark the jump gate. that way when you warp in you can turn your ship around sit shooting at range knowing that if things get hairy you can warp out without having to turn your ship round (this comes in v handy with the bigger slower ships)

A suggestion, that most people will get rather quickly.
When doing dead space missions, as you finish each area and move on, bookmark the deadspace gate that you reach. That way you don't have to fight through all the deadspace ranges to get their again. Also handy if you just want to slag some pirates and get isk and stuff. I spent about 4 hours doing that, made over a million doing it. If music be the food of love then get that man a double cheese burger!

As a new person myself, I have to say I found my perfect solution to the AFK/boring mining problem.
Books.
I've been through three or four of Terry Pratchet's Discworld books this week alone, sitting at the computer and reading while I did mining or traveling. I've also finished Chicks in Chainmail (which I recommend, especially to other women, as it's a blast).
And get a comfortable chair for your desk. Lean back, relax, let your ears tell you when NPC's are around, and read.
Then again, I always was a geek...
Thank you for the other tips, they're mostly common sense but _very_ useful to have.

Pod Safety Tip, from a newbie for newbie's:
Ok, so your getting your ass handed to you. Your pride and joy ship is being utteraly raped. Your structure bar starts showing as red. It's time to panic? Nope. It's time to RUN. This tip assumes that your ship has been warp scrambled and you can't get it out. Right-click in space and take note of EXACTLY where the Gates list is showed. Close that menu, but leave the cursor at the place you originaly clicked. Just as your ship gets killed and pod ejects, there will be a moment of lag. Use it wisely. Right-click and move your cursor imediatly to where the Gate list was. If all goes right, you just have to move your cursor a bit to the left\right to select a gate. Select any gate you like (preferably whatevers closest to your cursor), or betetr yet, an insta if you have one. IMEDIATLY hit warp. If done right, your pod will warp out before either being hit or being destroyed.
I was saved a few days ago using this tactic. My precious ship was scrambled and i couldent escape. I used the above tactics to get my pod to safety before it took much damage (i only lost a few shield points before it warped). If your like me and have implants that are worth more than a tier 1 battleship, you'll find this pod safety hint extremely usefull. If this same tip was posted before, i apologize; i didn't read through the thread before posting.
If you use this tactic and it results in your pod being saved, please send me an Eve-Mail, i'd love to know that i made a difference in someones Eve life

Be wary of other players when mining. EVEN IN 1.0 SPACE.
Unless you jump out quickly and even if you have tanked your indy or whatever you're using as your mining vessel you need to escape quickly if a noob gank squad jumps you.
Be aware and ready to jump at all times. I learnt the hard way

To find agents for any given NPC corp, open your "People and places" window, set the dropdown to search for "Corporation" and type in the corp name. In the corp properties window there will be a tab called "Agents" and in each type of agent contained within, each list will start with an area called "Agents you can access", fly to one and start chatting.

I'm a noob who's been playing for about ten days, and after four days I started losing ships. In fact, I've lost five. So I know something about losing ships.
Most of the tips here are very good - but there are some other things that other noobs should know.
When I go mining, I usually mine in some low-sec systems because that's where the best mining seems to be. When I do, though, I always have my tactical display on; I've zoomed out to get a good look at the space around me; and the moment I see any red or yellow marks on my screen, I warp out quickly. If you're a frigate pilot, chances are good that you'll only have mining lasers or very weak weapons. Pirates will usually take you out very quickly - so don't bother trying to fight. Just GET OUT. Anywhere. I always have my right-click menu up with my cursor on a bookmarked location to warp to in a moment's notice when the bad people come.
If you are already mining, it's still important to be ready to bail at a moment's notice. You may not have a full hold, but you'll lose an expensive ship if you wait to leave even a few seconds.
If you get warp-jammed, KEEP TRYING ANYWAY. Warp jammers don't last forever, and a lot of pirates warp-jam you once and then start firing. If you can stand a few missile hits, you can still warp out once the effect wears off. You'll have to get your armor repaired, but it is still cheaper than a new ship. Shield boosters and extenders are very good for this kind of strategy; signal amplifiers and sensor boosters are also very useful for giving you early warning. Damage control is also good to have, if you're willing to give up the cargo space for it.
If you do get blasted and you've just got your pod, KEEP TRYING TO WARP OUT. Just stay calm and keep trying.
A note on autopilots; I've actually found them safer than trying to manually pilot, as the autopilot can make the moves to approach, warp and jump faster than my interface can. Just make sure you've got a safe destination - and always keep a look out on approach, just in case.
Finally, to those of you out there looking for trouble: it's very easy to find in any system with a low or even mid-level security rating. Just remember that no matter how many guns, shields, or skills you have, there's always someone faster on the draw than you.
Hope this stuff helps.

Have a few tips to offer myself... On the issue of not being able to stop the warp once activated and you are sitting there "wagging back and forth" due to an object close by and in your path; Hitting Ctrl+Space (default shortcut) repeatedly will cancel the warp, then you can maneuver and fly away.
Also, I discovered recently that with precise timing smartbombs CAN take out missiles, so if you are quick and can time the delay of the smartbomb correctly, you have the ultimate defense against missiles. It takes lots of practice to get the timing down though... And you can even blow up your own missiles with a smartbomb if you trigger them at the same time.
And if you insist on travelling through low security space, an afterburner just might make the difference between a cold, lonely death and escaping through a gate with 5 hull hp left...
On a side note, is it wrong to have a Tristan with 628 shields? hehehe Ignorance is Bliss And the Opposite is True Genius is Madness |

The best defensive tip I ever got when I was new was to line yourself up! When doing a combat mission, or just in a situation where your weary, make sure you are lined up with some sort of onject, be it a gate or a planet or whatever. This way, if you have a slow to warp ship, you can cut your exit down by precious seconds. Sometimes you can even warp instantly. Keep this in mind, it has helped me many times. -HAL 5000

Edited by: Justine on 07/12/2005 06:06:55 Thanks for this advice Originally by: Cobra64 When you feel that you have enough experience to venture into low sec space for the first time, either to mine some of the better ore or hunt some of the bigger rats, keep your eyes peeled for PC pirates who are on the lookout for people such as you.

But if you REALLY want to steal whatever is in a can that just seems to be floating in space, then click on it, do show info, click on the pilot info, then use people and places to add him to your address book and if he is logged off then steal away to your hearts content. If he is logged on, then check local and if he isn't in local, then steal away and fly to the nearest station, dock and go make a cup of coffee.
Not that I would EVER condone such behaviour of course, I'm a respectable trader (with a REALLY fast ship) _______________________________

Just to follow up on this because it is a new part of the game and can easily lead to you getting killed:
If you take something out of a cargo container that is owned by somebody else, EVEN IF THEY SAY "Hey newb, here is some free stuff for you to take!", THEY CAN ATTACK YOU IF YOU OPEN IT.
They can attack you in any system, even in 1.0 space, right next to a fleet of Concord ships and turrets, and they will be legally allowed to do it. They can blow you up and Concord will just sit there and watch.
A warning message will pop up when you try to open a container that is not yours. DO NOT IGNORE THIS WARNING. It doesn't matter if somebody says "hey, don't worry about the warning, I won't attack you, this stuff is free for you to take." TRUST THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK. They are probably tricking you, and will probably blow your ship up within seconds of you opening the container.
If somebody really wants to give you some stuff, they can trade items to you if you are both docked in the same station, which is safe.
Again: if you open a container that is not yours, the owner can attack you and kill you. EVE is a rough-and-tumble game, and a little paranoia is healthy. Be careful who you trust.

I learnt a bit about survival in 0.0 systems yesterday, and I'd like to share it. I bet these things are covered in thousands of other messages, but anyways:
I wanted to travel to H-ADOC in Curse. I went through Great Wildlands, using 7Q-8Z2 as an entrance point. When you pop out from a stargate, you are cloaked, and will stay cloacked until you move or someone else comes close enough. When cloaked, you usually have some time to ponder what to do.
1. Check the local chat. If no one is there, just fly straight through the system. No one is shooting at you, no need to do anything special.
2. If there is even one person in the same system, I suggest jumping to some planet, the one next to the stargate you want to enter is usually the best one. Never jump to moons, since moons can have POS (Player Owned Structures, like stations) with sentry guns. They will kill you.
3. If the planet happens to be near enough the stargate, scan the stargate using scanner. 30 degree arc, and point it straight to the gate. I don't know how long range scanner has, but a few hundred thousand km is usually enough. If ships or mobile warp disruptors (warp bubbles, you can't warp) appear in your scanner, wait until they go away, or use some other route.
4. If the stargate is in the middle of nowhere, warp 100km away, and before arriving, drop a bookmark form persons & places screen. If the gate is clear, you might as well fly through it. If not, return to the bookmark you made. From there you can scan the gate and hope no one is interested enough to come and kill you. If/when they leave, go.
Always treat every person you see in 0.0 space as hostile. Security rating doesn't matter, anyone can kill you - and you can kill them too - without any penalty. Miners are usually easy prey even for newbies, so if you want to learn the basics, go find some. Webber and warp scrambler are the basic tools you need. Try using some low-cost ship like Rifter, and leave all the valuables home.
Remembering all this I flew with my Rifter from Rens -> 7Q-8Z2 -> H-ADOC -> Doril -> Rens. The gate in Doril was camped, but even the hardened gankers had some christmas spirit and let me pass after 10 minutes of waiting. Thanks to the Tyrell corp!

Well, it is also a good habit when you are mining to zoom your view out and to keep the tactical overview on. You get a better sense of the area. And don't forget to keep an eye on Overview . As someone said, is better to lock on the asteroids you want to mine and then disable in Overview Settings the echo for asteroids. Otherwise, in large belts you will only see lots of asteroids and the enemy will be seen only when too late. Or, at least, if you don't like to disable the asteroids view completely in Overview, let it show only the exact type of minerals you want to mine. If you want to mine crokite there is no need to view all the minerals available on that belt. Try mining just one type at a time.

Be paranoid. Always expect the worst from people, because it's usually what you'll get. Some examples:
1) If you're mining in low sec space, NEVER use sec rating as a guide to who is dangerous. People with low sec rating are probably pirates and will kill you; people with high sec rating will also kill you and suck up the sec loss (they spend their sec rating like isk, only instead of ships and mods they're buying your loot/corpse).
2) If a stranger invites you into a gang, you will get a warning about being made a target in possible corp wars. IGNORE THIS IF YOU LIKE DYING. The scam works like this; nasty pirate makes an Alt and puts the Alt in what we will call the gank corp. His main corp declares war on the gank corp. The Alt invites you into a gang. If you accept, you are now a valid target in the war between main corp and gank corp. Nasty pirate ganks you.
3) Insta bookmarks are handy, by all means use them but get them from people you trust or make them yourself. If you buy a set on escrow, then a couple of weeks down the line expect to eventually find the system where the bookmarks have been spiked and all point to the player owned gankstation.
And my final and most important tip: 4) If you INSIST on mining into a jetcan, DON'T whine when I steal your ore. Make EVE a more interesting place and take revenge! (if you can) -------------------------------------------------- - Suhadi |

1 point about travelling in 0.0 space - get a set of bookmarks, you have no idea how many times these will save your lives.
15km to the gate, you will be warp scrambled and probably webbed, meaning you won't make the gate. If you do, the liklihood is that there will be tacklers on the other side of the gate waiting for you anyway.
An important thing to know when in 0.0 is the state of "being aggressed" - If you fire your weapons, there will be a delay before you can jump through the gate, essentially making you a sitting duck at the gate.
That is why often in 0.0 when you run into a gate camp, the enemy won't attack you, as if they do and you don't attack and jump through, they can't follow you. Mostly you will see 2 or 3 frigates jump through ahead of you, and the rest of the gate camp will attack and scramble you - if this happens you are generally as good as dead.
Another think to note, is that intel in alliance space is generally quite good, with eyes everywhere and numerous covert ops deployed. If you are coming, people generally know and will set a trap for when you jump through... again, as soon as you decloak and align, the tacklers will scramble you and lock you down...

Awesome - wish I had read these earlier myself :) As a newb, noob (whatever) -er new to EVE myself I have the following to offer;
1. Always pay attention to red text and take it seriously, I learned this dealing with the Mordus Legion ... thankfully I had just upgrade my ship and all its weaponry it's the only reason I survived three waves of the beggars.
2. If you have to travel in < 5.0 space to get from point A to B always warp and when approaching the Stargate have people & places open incase you need to right click a bookmark and warp out fast.
3. Becareful who you trust, if it seems too good to be true it is and you better be heading for the door. Learned that the hard way too ...

There's some good advice in this thread for avoiding death, but I know that sooner or later it'll come for me. So my question is: what's the best way to recover from a ship loss? The reason I quit Jumpgate (twice) was that, after losing a pricy ship, even if I had the money to replace it, I'd have been gutted by Conflux trying to get to the stations that sold the parts I needed...

Don't go afk during NPC pirate missions.
I was doing a mission where the pirate ships were in clusters of about 3 ships each. Each cluster was far enough away from one another where I wouldn't get any aggro from other clusters while I destroyed by targeted one. With one last cluster to go, I went afk thinking I'll take care of them when I come back. I was about 60km away and they were just sitting there. I kinda forgot that I targeted a cargo container and was approaching towards it. It conveniently happened to be in the direction of the pirate cluster. Upon my return to the keyboard I find my ship destroyed and myself floating in a huge, white egg (that's what the pod reminds me of).

Im a soon 3 month old player, but I feel I have at least a few good advices to fellow players of this great game:
1.) Show patience!!! This game really really requires patience. Take time to learn the game! Ask questions and more questions! (but pls stop before the one you ask get too impatient and pod u.. )
2. Get the skills up for Equipments for ships too, not just the ship! This is important I think! Seen so many new players that went straight for the battlecruiser. felt cool with one, only to get blasted because lack of skills in weaponry!
3. STEAR CLEAR OF 0.0 to 0.4 space!! This cant be said enough times! Keep out of these zones at leastfor 3-4 months! Any player in there can and surely will pod u on sight, if they feel for it.
Generally, if you take time and learn the game you will be fine! DOnt be impatient! Spent lots of time fiddling over the skills. Not just the one you currently have, but also from the market! See whats available. Read upon them, and plan from that point. And yes, ask questions! Ask Questions! Ask Questions! Just be careful not to anger someone with a battleship or something
Patience is the key. Paranoia is your friend. Expect anything from anyone. In space noone can hear you scream!

I know MWDs increase your signiture radius, but since you are using it as a quick fix to run away (and are prolly already taking fire) would it be a good means of escape?

I prefer not to. The boost to aligning is pretty inignificant so as a general rule it won't save you and the bigger radius + cap drain + fitting requirements isn't worth it. Now, if you're running that 15km on autopilot in empire or trying to keep range during a fight then I highly recommend hitting your MWD.

What is the best way to fly during a fight? I was told early on that I should check the optimal range of my weapons and set orbit distance to that, but I find 9 times out of 10 that the little rats keep flying up on me and get in under my weapons' accuracy falloff. Is there any skills or equipment that would help ensure orbit distance reamins at what you set? Would it be better to use the Keep at distance option? What about warping in at a distance (like 40km or more) and creeping up on them, then sitting still while you hammer at them? Only been playing a very short time, but loving it... Haven't been podded yet, but know it's inevitable...*sigh*...Lost one ship so far trying to do a level II mission in a low level Tristan...

Since no one else has explained it yet, I'll explain setting up an insta-dock or insta-jump.
Right, so as we all know, the closest you can warp to any given location is 15 km. This means that it takes time to approach the station under your ship's regular propulsion system before you can dock or jump. Docking requires you to be within 500m of a station, and jumping requires you to be within 2000m of a gate, so this is anywhere from 13 to 14.5 km you need to motor across to reach safety. Unless you have microwarp drives, this distance is lethal, especially if you're hit with a Stasis Webbifier.
To get around this problem, you can use bookmarks. Under the "People and Places" button on the NeoCom, click the places tab. This will allow you to place a bookmark.
Now, simply placing a bookmark at a jumpgate or station is not enough, as you can still only warp to within 15km of your bookmark. To make it really useful, you place your bookmark beyond the object you're warping to. I find that 13.5km to 14km past the station or gate is ideal (as you actually drop out of warp farther than 15km out, but your inertia carries you that kilometer or two).
But where to place the bookmark? Well, the best way to do it is to tool around outside the station until the box icon at the center of the station (or circle-and-carat symbol for jump gate) is aligned with the symbol for the location from which you'll be jumping. In my case, this is usually an asteroid field (an inverted triangle).
This brings up a really important point - the insta-dock or insta-jump bookmark is only going to work if you're approaching from the correct direction (though stations are big enough that +- 30 degrees is usually close enough). If your system looks like so:
V(X-1)---------------------S---b-----------------V(III-2)
where S is the station and b is your bookmark, warping to the bookmark from the asteroid belt at Planet X-Belt 1 is going to put you right on top the station. Warping to the bookmark from the asteroid belt at Planet III-Belt 2 is going to put you 30km from the station. Bad news if you're being chased or if someone's camping the station. Thus, when you're making your bookmarks, it's a good idea to make a note of which direction you're approaching from. Fortunately, for many miner-inclined types, some planets have as many as 9 asteroid belts nearby. If you're waring to a station that's more than about 3AU away, all of those belts will be within a narrow enough angle that from the station's perspective they'll all overlap, meaning you'll only need to set one station bookmark to jump directly to safety from any of them.
To use a bookmark, just right click your mouse over open space, scroll down to the bottom (where all of your bookmarks in a given system should be listed), highlight "jump to within 15km" and go.
One important thing to remember is that unlike having an autopilot to auto-warp you or clicking the "dock" icon to automatically warp to and dock at a station, using a bookmark does only the warping portion of the process. The rest is up to you.
Finally, you need to be quick and have good timing. When you're warping, you typically don't have any object actually selected (this is especially true of jumpgates, which are not shown in the default overview settings - I suggest you change this if you're going to be hanging out in low-sec space). While you're warping, even if you have an object selected, the "dock" or "jump" icons are not available. What you need to do is put your mouse over the object (or its icon in the overview) and wait. As soon as your speed bar no longer says "Warping" (and the speed is registered in rapidly dropping numbers), click the object or icon to select it, then immediately click the "dock" or "jump" button.
Congratulations, you've just insta-warped. Even hard-core campers had no time to lock onto you before you reached safety.

If you do this correctly, you'll hit the "dock" button and Aura's "Docking permission requested," and "Docking request accepted" reports will be simultaneous.
I've done enough of these now that I typically drop out of warp inside the station. In fact, if I'm too slow clicking the "dock" button, my ship goes sideways at 3000m/s as the game spits my ship object out of the station object (as two objects can't occupy the same space). It's kind of amusing, actually.
If you don't have an insta-dock set up in a dangerous system (shame on you), warping to a station may not save you, especially if your ship is damaged. Baddies can follow you to the station (especially if there's only one in the system) and gank you before you can dock. Even if there are sentry guns they might be able to smack you down and warp away before the sentry guns drop their shields. Worse still, the baddies may be working in teams, where one guy flushes the quarry from the asteroid belts and the others camp the stations and gates.
So if you're hurt and need time to recharge your capacitor, run your shield boost, or bring your armor repairer online, DO NOT warp to a jump gate or station. Warp to a planet or a moon far removed from any other man-made object. Almost no one goes to planets or moons, and the sheer number of them in many systems makes it infeasible to search them all for you. Like most real criminals, most PvP player pirates are lazy or stupid or both. They want to gank you quickly, take your stuff, and move on. They don't want to do any real work and they don't want to take any time. If they did, they'd be mining, not trying to kill n00bs and prospectors.
By going to a planet or moon, you buy time to repair your ship (you did outfit the right modules, didn't you?). Even if you don't have the capacitor or CPU to keep the module online or operating all the time, I suggest you keep an Armor Repairer fitted if you're going to be mining in low-sec space. Jump to a moon, take the time to bring your armor and shields back up to 100% before trying to run the gauntlet to safety. You might still get ganked, but at least you'll have better chances.
In addition to instant docking or jumping, or hiding out at out-of-the-way planets, there's another good trick for hiding from PvP baddies - safe spots. "What's a safe spot?" you ask? A safe spot is a bookmark that you've dropped in the middle of nowhere. You can do this by placing a bookmark as you're warping. The bookmark doesn't actually get placed until you click the OK button, so just give it the default name and change it later.
Once you have a safe-spot bookmarked, you can warp to it from anywhere in the system using the regular method for warping to bookmarks described above. The beauty of this is that you are literally in the middle of nowhere. You're not near any celestial object and there's no way for the baddies to know which path you were travelling along when you were warping (unless they're really good and saw you align before warping). Absent flooding the system with probes, they will NEVER find you. And most player pirates care more about their missile and gunnery skills than their probe skills. See above under stupid and lazy. So warp out into deadspace. Hang out, get a cup of coffee, wait for them to get bored and log off, whatever. Patience is your ally. Hell, make a phone call to your friend, wake him up at 3AM and tell him you need him to log on, grab his battleship, and come escort you out. He'll appreciate that, really. ;)
I'm not sure how the NPC pirate spawn system works, so you might get the occasional Guristas or Serpentis out in deep space, but I can't imagine it's a frequent occurrence.
Most importantly, stay alert, use your head, do your homework, make suitable preparations, and travel with heavily-armed friends. It can make all the difference between a profitable trip or getting popped and podded.

If someone can outmaneuver/outrun you, they have control of the range they fight at. The degree of their control depends on their speed and maneuverability advantage. Training navigation or fitting an afterburner can help you keep the range where you want it.
The real issue isn't accurary falloff - that's a measure of how quickly your guns lose accuracy beyond their ideal range. The issue is tracking speed. Your guns have a speed measured in radians per second. If the enemy is moving more quickly (say, orbiting you really fast) then your guns lose tracking ability and start to whiff. There are skills that will improve your turrets tracking speed, or you can use drones to counter fast-moving enemy ships, or you can fit lighter weapons, which typically have higher tracking speeds. If you have the right skills and loads in blasters or projectile cannons, you can beat them at the knife-fighting game. Then they start to run from you instead of vice-versa. I would not, however, advise trying to fit multiple weapons of multiple types. If you have a long range gun, and a medium range gun, and a short range gun, then you always have at least one slot that's not helping you. One alternate weapon can be a decent choice if it's the only good use you have for those last few CPU or powergrid points, but that's about the limit.
If your optimum range is much greater than your enemies', then warping in far out and closing while shooting can make a big difference. If it's a small issue, say 13km for you vs 10 for them, it's not going to help. Fast frigates will close that 3km gap in only one or two salvoes.

I can't wait to fire Eve up tonight (for the 2nd time). If it's half as incredible playing it as it is reading about it I think I'll be around a long time.

I have 2 monitors, many graphic cards have 2 connections for monitors so go to some sale (is it flea market in english?) (loppmarknad svenska) they often have 17"ers taht works perfect.
Put eve on one screen with window mode and you can browse the internet or even play other games on the other one =)

Quote: 1. Dont play the game in AFK mode. This game is not designed with this kind of playing style in mind and you should NEVER consider your ship and character safe while being away from your computer.

When solo mining in 0.6 - 0.8 systems and if you're fairly new (like myself), use a cruiser. You can easily fit 4 Miner I's, an AB, a Shield Booster *and* a launcher on a Stabber. The launcher is enough to take out most pesky rats over time while the booster keeps your shields up. You can place a can in a belt, sit next to it and mine away, chucking missiles at the spawning rats in relative safety. The four miners should have you drawing ore at a decent rate for starters.
Make sure to wait for a rat spawn to come around before you warp back to the station to grab an indy and pick up the canned goods (heh), otherwise things might get a bit tricky.

Where can I find and what's the item name in market for number 9 and 10?
9. Use Warp Core Stabilizers to avoid being warp jammed. The more, the merrier.
10. Use the auto-scanner and set it to alert you when anyone in scanning range is a potential threat to you.

Warp Core Stabilizers are found in the market under that very name. Check Ship Equipment -> Propulsion -> Propulsion Upgrades.
I'm not sure what is meant by "auto-scanner", though. Do they mean the overview?... -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

I usually just blast through the roid belts in systems cleaning out rats and keep some anti piracy kit onboard. Only had a couple of people try and jump me ... both failed in hilariousley incompetent ways.
Had some great fun with people warp jamming me ... the most important thing is dont have a ship you can afford to replace 2 times over. If you cant then you really need to get more money and play it safe whilst you do so. Go ratting in high sec.
Doing this causes you to really think about that ship you are about to buy - does it have enough powergrid+cpu for your loadout? will you have to switch to more weaker + short range weapons? Best of all it gives you time to train the skills you really need. Look through the market and see what all the items do ... what do they boost ... penalties. try to come up with ways that you can turn an even battle to your advantage (preferably massivley turn it ... ecm ... )
Also i find that speed is the key ... pirates seem to favour short range as that is where their kit works best (and as with all generalisations is sometimes wrong).
Look at other players in the same ship. Are they going faster than you? ... do they use the same range? .. what guns are they using?
Get yourself 500k and a firgate with insurance and go out there with an escape plan and a strategy to kill someone in a similar ship to you. you will learn very quickly and get a rush.
The other thing .. is it really worth waiting 1 day for a skill early on? wouldnt it be beter to train 4 different skills to open up more items that you can use?

I usually go take a s.h.i.t. or something when travelling a large number of jumps - that is what Autopilot is for afterall.
The best description for the autopilot in this game is HAL 9000 with an attitude so personally I do NOT rely on it at ALL. For some oddball reason it likes to make jumps into systems where pod killing has recently occured. Before someone begins about resetting the autopilot settings to no pod killing sometimes you get the message that you cannot get there without going through the systems.
On a related note ABSOLUTLY NEVER run your autopilot on 0.0 space. This makes you an easy kill even for a battleship with no sensor boosters. Most alliances take a dim view of neuterals (esp new player corp members) in their space. This is generally not because they dont like newer players or a desire to be mean. But as a safety feature for their members as scouts are sometimes disguised as New Player corp members but relaying information to the Alliance or faction that is hostile to the controlling entity.

That way if it all goes wrong you can (hopefully) jump that little bit quicker by just pressing the big yellow auto pilot button.

Just lost a ship for the first time (a thorax) and the reason hasn't been mentioned anywhere in this thread - low sec moons. NEVER warp to a moon in 0.4 or under sec space because they are crawling with POSs (player owned stations) which will more often than not blow you out of the sky without a minutes warning. I was attacked by a pirate near a gate in a 0.3 sec system and warped to the closest thing to where i was pointing (so that my ship would go to warp quicker) little did i know that i was about to land right next to about 20 player owned turrets with warp jamming abilities! My only consolation was that they don't pod kill players, so at least i got away with my life (and implants). |

Originally by: Oosha When mining (no matter where) lock onto a few asteroids and keep 1 or 2 of your locks empty.
Great point Oosha I found thatif you create custom settings then 'Save As' you can quickly recall those after locking an asteroid etc.. I have several profiles saved and set them accordingly to space security, activity or missions.

Not even CONCORD protected space is completely without risks. I was on autopilot the other day on a 10 jump totally secure space run, when I was attacked at the Jita gate in Mauvolinen (I'm spelling that totally wrong...). Looks like a bunch of characters all about the same age figured that hosing indy's and loosing their Kestrels was worth the trouble. (I'm guessing on the Kestrel part.) Without the shield hardeners and shield booster I had fitted, I probably would have been destroyed from the first couple salvos. I think each ship only got one salvo off each (4 missiles) before being vaporized by the turrets. There were 5 players IIRC. Not sure if they got anyone else, but it woke me up from paying bills on the other computer! "WTF? that sounds like I'm being targeted..." I was scrambling to get the shield booster and afterburners engaged that I didn't even check to see what kind of damage was being done or take note of who it was. I had to look int the logs to see who to set standings towards.
Same thing could happen to an AFK miner, if the attacker was willing to lose the security and a throw-away ship.

I found it hard to hold back a chuckle when reading this mate! Sounds like the sort of luck I would have. I have one query-Last night I was challenged to a duel while mining in a secure (low sec) AB, the guy was really pressing me for a fight(wannabe pirate trying to get his sec rating down i think)I said no as i wasn't really equipped. Can you have a 'duel' without effecting your Security rating? Or do you think he was just picking on a noob? Ps-thanks for all the tips

Post Revelations tip- Do not 0-warp into an asteroid belt. Although I never warped close to belts to begin with, I usually warp to within 50k of the belt and then take up a position on the edges of the belt for mining with my front facing an object to warp to.
I was tracked down by a pirate last night. I made a clean get-away, and he persued me. After getting to a nearby planet I double backed and before I realized what I did, I had 0-warped into an asteroid belt he thought I had gone to, and I was now sitting right next to him and the swarm of NPC pirates that were all around me.
I still managed to get away, but I learned that 0-warp can be your enemy as well as your friend if your not careful. |

Nahh, not really wrong. I've read it too and theres still a lotta good stuff;
Bookmarking an exit route and having it up on the screen ready to "book" Dropping a bookmark while warping so you can jump to empty space in an emergency. Pointing your nose to the place you want to warp in case you get attacked. Using a shuttle to explore space. Staying clear of large celestial objects so their gravirty well doesn't hinder your getaway. Look a gift horse in the mouth, he might be poison... Don't trust your mother and stay away from <.04 sec until your experienced.
It's like my dear departed father used to say, "There's only two people in the world I trust, you and me. And I'm not so sure about you..."
Good luck Grasshopper...

If you were refering to the nerf about targeting range and scan resolution. It's so people cannot have risk-free PVP.
If you are refering to the fact Heavy Interdictors can scramble you irregardless of how many stabs you are using, yeah that's a bad idea. Duncan Bannatyne
