Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Loola Admonishment and I'm a highly successful salad vegetable seller from Wrexham (Thanks Jamie Oliver), but as we're friends, you can call me Ma'am.
For every person who comes here throwing their toys out of their pram about giving up their accounts and quitting, because CCP are running the game as CCP wish, rather than as *they* wish, I will set up another account.
I have buckets of spare cash, and if I get too low I'll just sell another one of my jewel encrusted crowns. They don't burn very well to keep me warm anyhow.

Allow me to explain.
Once upon a time, EVE was a harsh, niche game, with a small CCP team of devs that worked out of dedication for basically nothing just to realize their vision. Their vision WAS realized, and finally all those years of SPENDING their own money in order to survive started to pay off... they were no longer threatened to work as codemonkeys for some ebil software company, they were their own masters (to a degree).
But, with great success, comes great responsability to your shareholders, and the focus of your work shifts from "vision" to "subscribers". As such, the more people you can make happy, the better. The more time passed, and the larger EVE grew, the less important the initial vision became, and the more important the gathering of funds grew. And now, we're at that point, where it's all about "what can we do to upset the least amount of existing customers but get as many new ones as possible".
This was the story of basically any visionary startup company, and its trek to the dark side.

Generally that's not totally unreasonable, is it?
You've said yourself I believe that 99% of people will live in 1% of the space after this change. Well, that surely shows that most of the subscriber base kinda like the idea about not getting randomly blown to bits.
There's still lowsec, 0.0, highsec wars ... hell, even suicide ganking could still go on but with no payout if someone is that desperate.

The issue with that assumption was that the MAJORITY would like suicideganking nearly eliminated. Ask people what they want, they will tell you what they THINK they want... but problem is, most don't KNOW what they actually NEED. This is one of those examples... ask just about anybody, they will tell you it's a good change... come change, most will end up not liking it, either directly, or because of the cascade effects in other things. And the initially believed popular change turns into one of the most unpopular changes ever.

Fair enough, if it goes horribly wrong they can revert it. Why is everyone insisting CCPhave only made this change because of forum whines, as opposed to them actually thinking this is how *their* planned mechanics should work?
What does the interstellar council think of this? Is this up for vote or what?
(I don't desperately care, I've never been suicide ganked nor been suicide ganked myself, I just think it's funny how people complaining about CCP listening to forum whiners come here to whine even more!)

And you know this how exactly?
Lets face it, CCP made oodles of changes that everyone whined about ad nausea. Guess what happened? Most of them were actually quite good, and in general made the game better. And we're still all here.
And here are you telling me what I need.
Repeat after me: Riskless suicide ganking new players in a game: BAD Accepting consequences for your actions in a game: GOOD Now repeat this a hundert times. Now do you get it? -- Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? |
