It is with the deepest sorrow that we share with you the news about the passing of Associate Community Manager Laura “Taera” Genender. Although she was with us for only a short time, she connected with our community through her selfless grace and enthusiasm. Even before she joined our team, her professionalism at MMORPG.com elevated the state of our industry and made us all stronger because of it. Our thoughts and our hearts are with her family. Though you may not have ever had the pleasure of meeting her, we ask that you include them in your thoughts as well.

I think holy shit about covers it. She was a great and funny rep who posted in just about every New Citizens thread welcoming new players and answering their questions. It is quite a loss to the community.

I had enjoyed her at MMORPG.com, and was delighted when she surfaced here on CCP's forums.
Even though she had only been here a short time, she will be missed. I can only hope that some of her style rubbed off on the other Associate Community Managers.

As I said elsewhere:
She was one of the best things to happen to these boards in a long time.
And I hope that whoever fills her shoes lives up to what she did in such a short time. She was open, honest, AND friendly with everyone she interacted with here, bar devs (who witnessed her wonderfully humorous side).
But I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering how she was taken from us so suddenly. Surely we could be provided with some bit of knowledge about this. We don't need to know everything, but I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering how this dreadful event has befallen us.

No way. I can't believe it. And to think that no more than a week ago, I was looking for her e-mail adress to send her a 'congrats' with the new job, seeing as I'm an active EVE player as well and she was my boss whilst I worked as a moderator here at MMORPG.com.
What horrible news. You will be missed, you were one of the best community managers I have ever had the pleasure of both working for and being a member of the community of. This deeply saddens me. I loved her personal touch in every post she made and every PM she sent.

I read this with great sadness. I fenced with Laura for several years over on MMORPG.com over moderations that I had received and she always treated my fairly and dealt with my complaints in a professional manner.
I was sad to see her leave, and glad to see her come to CCP.
I will mourn her passing today.

I didn't know Laura very well but she was very helpful and friendly in the couple of emails we exchanged and I could see she'd be a very positive influence on Eve community relations going forward. This is a terrible shock and my thoughts and commiserations are with her friends and family and work mates in this difficult time.

I had the great pleasure of knowing and spending a bit of time with her during her time in Eve University. Despite occasional disagreements (she was a bit feisty at times), I was rarely, if ever, unhappy to see her on TS. She will be missed, and I wish her and her family the best, both myself and on behalf of the Legion of Lost Souls. She and her family will be in our thoughts and prayers. RIP o7

I wish I knew what to say. This comes as an incredible shock. I knew Laura from when she started playing EVE, and kept in contact with her through chat, other online games, and TeamSpeak. She always made me laugh, made me think, made me her bi--h in Team Fortress 2 :,) I just wish I could have said goodbye. She will be missed greatly, but she will always have a place in my heart.

I don't honestly know how best to add to this, I'm still a little in shock. I don't think I have the level of eloquence required to properly eulogise someone I admired so much and had a great deal of fondness for, so I figured I'd just share a few memories that make me a little less morose.
I'd known Laura since she started playing EVE, prior to her time at CCP. It wasn't a long time, just less than a year ago. And yet I'd like to think she was one of my closest friends in the game, along with a close friend on the internet generally (as close a friend as you can be to someone who lives on a different continent).
We spent a lot of time verbally abusing our mutual friend and general scapegoat, Toros - and each other - on EVE University teamspeak. We'd talk about food. A LOT. She was always extolling the virtues of pumpkin pie/hashbrowns/kugel/muffins/steak/meat salad (no don't ask) - anything really, never failed to make me hungry along with her. We'd post a lot of links of people doing silly things on the internet, as you do, so much so that I had a good 2 hour backlog of random videos to watch some nights. Occasionally, when the mood took her she would sing for our entertainment. She was actually pretty good, and getting her in a silly enough mood to start was the highlight of many an evening on TS. We'd sometimes end up playing TF2 where she'd inevitably come top of the scoreboard on every map then start laying down hilarious comebacks to those who complained about her prowess with a rocket launcher.
One of my favourite EVE-related memories was one of our whimsical exploration trips into low sec. We took a really badly fit pair of ships. I think I had an Omen which the particular character I was using could barely fly anyway, she was undoubtedly in some Minmatar rust bucket with mission loot fittings, as was her wont. At some point we scanned out an unarmed POS and tried to steal a Probe from behind the shields. Guessing POS passwords isn't as easy as you'd think sadly, so we just ended up throwing our pods at the shields for a while giggling like kids about our "Grand Theft Probe" that never happened. It was probably a lot funnier at the time.
There's so many more weird little bits I remember from spending online time with her, I could go on forever. She was capable of being incredibly intelligent, highly opinionated and often wilfully stubborn one moment, but in the next she made me laugh and act silly a lot more than I ever gave her credit for. I will truly miss that, as I will truly miss her.

I never knew Laura personally and had only seen her online persona pop up recently on my radar. I did read this message however and couldn't help myself looking around to find out more. And based on what I read, it saddens me even more that she was taken from this life so young, while she obviously brought so much joy to many lives and would have left an even more profound mark in this world had she been given more time.
I wish to extend my warm thoughts to everybody who knew her and who will miss her. Knowing about loss in my personal life, I know how hard it is to deal with, and I wish you all the strength in the world for this.
Also, I'd like to point out to EVE people a personal request from Laura's parents that was posted on MMORPG.com (source, all the way at the bottom)

I had only heard of her doing good things and being a generally fantastic person...saw her post a few times, and everyone seemed to love her...and at 23, it's absolutely terrible.

I only talked to her once back when prem content was about to be released. she had great excitement about the game and all the great features of the game that were coming, she was a lot of fun to chat with while we waited for the release.
It saddens me deeply that she passed away at such a young age, and such a great personality. May she rest in peace, and i hope her family is dealing with this sudden loss well. my thoughts and feelings are out to you. |

23 is far, far too young to go. I lost a good friend of mine when she was only 18, so I know what it must be like for her family and friends. Those who knew her well and personally.
I didn't, but certainly those that did have many fond memories of her. It is through those that she will live on, for if we remember, they are not truly gone.
There's not a lot I could say that wouldn't sound somewhat trite, so I won't try and cheapen her memory with a massive essay.

My sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Mrs. Genender, I did not have the pleasure of interacting with her but im sure the Eve playerbase, CCP, her family, and everyone who knew her is lessened by this. My prayers are with her family and friends in this trying time.
I do not think I would be remiss if I passed on the condolences of my corp and alliance either, such a hard blow can only be softened by the shoulders of friends who care. In this I'm sure there will be many shoulders as she sounds like the kind of person who had many friends. I do not know who it was who said it but "The greatest gift is that she had such friends" comes to mind.

I read this and began doing searches for more information. Having never had the chance to meet/speak/interact with Laura, from everything I have read, I missed the chance to know a true gem of a person.

I'm still curious on how it happened. Well, it had to be some accident i guess, since there were no prior signs and so on.
I'd write r.i.p., but i think that it is overused and therefor meaningless.
Also I don't believe in god or in an afterlife.
I didn't know her at all, not even on the forums.
I think her family and friends lost a nice human.
I've read up all the stuff people wrote about her on this forums and on mmorpg.com and she really seemed to be nice.
If there should be an afterlife [after all, i don't say there there is one and i also don't say that there is none, I just don't know it, how could I?], then she's at a better place for sure, i guess any place is better than our nice earth in this current age... right now we are kind of witnessing the decline of civilization.

Laura had many strings to her bow.
She was well respected throughout the mmorpg world (through mmorpg.com).
She was well liked and respected in CCP and indeed, was a hard working member of CCP's staff with a friendly attitude that many could learn from.
No, I didnt know here myself but I knew of her. My deepest sympathy goes to her family, friends and work collegues old and new.
This is Laura doing the Tango .. watch and enjoy. It puts a human face on a story that has saddened all of us who have replied in this thread.

I sat feeling sorry for myself yesterday, I split up with my girlfriend whom I love and this saddened me and left me feeling nothing but despair. Then I read about Laura's untimely and unfair passing and I realised how lucky I am. I have my health, I have friends and I will be ok.
I never got to talk to Laura while she was here, but I would like to say something here and hope she see's it somehow.
Dear Laura,
I am so sorry that you were taken away at such a young age, that you will never get to experience all the wonderful things that life has to offer, but I also want to say thankyou. I realise now how lucky I am just to be here and from now on I will never complain about the annoying things in life because they are a small price to pay. I hope that wherever you are, that you are safe and happy and that you will watch over those you have left behind. Fly safe Laura Genender and know that even in death you have helped change atleast one life for the better.
