however i had an interesting arguement with a carebear who was smacking about how we arent pirates while we just ransomed a pod...
now, what IS a pirate? :P
IMHO a pirate is- A person who ransoms person who roams low sec belts gate camper and the general love of the barebears who jump through

Edited by: Kirra Liu on 23/08/2008 20:03:59 In my view a pirate is anyone that participates in combat without a specific reason for shooting someone i.e. Attacking someone just because they are there. A pirate can still have rules that they follow, but they generally disregard the rules of an area etc.
Alot of anti-pirate folks in my view are pirates. This is because they end up being NBSI (Not Blue Shoot It) and generally end up just looking to make their killboards look better.
Oh and pirates say Yarr, and shiver me timbers, n stuff
Im not pirate, follow a strict NRDS policy, follow the rules of where I live and work, although this change is recent.

the guy was calling us gate campers, not pirates...
TBH i would think killing poeple just cause they are there is pirating, general pvp works the same except no ransoms... Vandamsel > Sometimes, when I'm bored, I put a cape on my ***** and solve mysteries |

What defines a piracy from ganking is that the pirates primary motivation is profit, of course a ganker sometimes profits and a pirate may gank so the lines are blurred a little but the definition is still there.

Piracy is a meat dish made from finely chopped or ground raw noobs or horse meat. Pirates can also be made by thinly slicing a high grade of meat such as strip steak, marinating it in quafe or other spirits and spicing it to taste, and then chilling it. It is often served with onions, capers and seasonings (the latter typically incorporating fresh ground pepper and Worcestershire sauce), and sometimes with a raw pod
I believe that answers this age old question once and for all -----------------

pi+ra+cy ûnoun, plural -cies. 1.practice of a pirate; robbery or illegal violence at sea. 2.the unauthorized reproduction or use of a copyrighted book, recording, television program, patented invention, trademarked product, etc.: The record industry is beset with piracy. 3.Also called stream capture. Geology. diversion of the upper part of one stream by the headward growth of another.
Well... I don't recall anyone ingame being able to reproduce anything trademarked illegally and I can't see anyone being geologically active in outer space, so it might have to do something with the first... although we are not at sea. ;)
Ok, ok, let's call it the vast ocean of space... now when is illegal violence used? ;)

Ah yes, this is a good one. But you have to extract the gatesnipers/smartbombers from the equation. Because that activity, IMO, seems to be closer to mining. Obviously everyone has a different view of what makes a pirate, one of my customers once called me a pirate; that made me feel all warm inside. ♥ _______

Personally I think of a pirate as an opportunist. Someone who ganks haulers and noobs out ratting. If you're in low sec looking for fights or roaming in a blob, you aren't a pirate.

Over the years this has been discussed many times, some peeps who are against the idea of actually owning space call the owners pirates to a degree, what you need to do is break it down using historical records as a comparison,
Pirates have been known throughout the ages as a bloodthirsty bunch that murder, ****, steal (among other things)
now most of the above cannot be applied to Eve so i look at what defines a pirate thus;
Indescriminate blowing up of ships through the art of PvP for enjoyment and/or profit,
and/or indescriminate attacking ships for the purpose of ransom.
Coupled into this some peeps may add scamming and even go as far as piracy of the market by controlling the market prices through one means or another for profit, but i personnally would not call those pirates,
Then you have another option can some mercenaries be technically Privateers (paid to pirate certain systems) ?
The more you try to look into it the more complicated it can become whence i define piracy as what i stated above which is straight forward and keeping it simple.

Piracy is a robbery committed at sea, or sometimes on the shore, without a commission from a sovereign nation (robbery with sovereign commission is privateering, and distinct from piracy).
Change "sea" to "space" and that's the technical definition. So from this technical definition most people in EVE (PVPers anyways) are privateers, not pirates.

made the wickipedia description more eve like there is also the title buccaneer and is described as following.
The term buccaneer is now used generally as a synonym for pirate. Originally, buccaneer crews were larger, more apt to attack alliances.
yeah i gave that one also a eve flavor
so if we use those historical terms in eve it can traslate to:
pirates: corp or smaller outfits that prey on all and pay homage to none.
privatreers: corp or smaller outfits that has a licence from a alliance that has sov to prey on none blue corps/alliances
buccaneers: coalision of pirates (alliance) that attack larger entitys and their holdings (pos's/system siege+++).
