Why does school have to be a bad place? Couldnt it be easier to find parking, couldnt the teachers be more interesting, and could there be less homework. Random thoughs as i sit in a college computer class.

I agree with the people above, however I also believe that a school should be a great and wonderous place of learning, not a place you let out a sigh before entering.

So did I when I was little... My years in college were the absolute best (so far), and I miss that world something fierce. Never going back though, dropping out and getting a job was right for me.
Luckily I've still got these loans to repay, they're a nice reminder of how utterly productive and well spent all that time was...

The teachers are from another generation... It's like when your a child of 5 years old, you run like everywhere. When your 20, do you still run everywhere, no you walk, whys that? Probably the same with people that are even older but worse...
Also as said they are from a diffrent generation, their jokes, clothes type of humor and lifestyles are all diffrent.
You ever notice when a young teacher starts (well every young teacher I've met anyway) is much more fun to learn from and interesting. Mainly because they understand how the younglings work, they could kid around with their pupils.
About the homework, I went Natrual Science studys in school (math, fysics, computering, chemistry) were all the nerds go. You'd think we would be nerding ourselfs in class and trying to learn as much as possible... *DUUUUH* wrong, we were chatting, laughing, joking about the whole time. Teachers got ****ed. Homeworks is a form of class that suites yourself, you can schedule it whenever you want, take it in peices etc. However in school your constantly distracted by your friends (I was anyway lol). And yes you do get "tasks" to do everyclass that has to be finished and put it. But if you do your task real quick, guess what, you'll have enough time to maybe do your homework in the same class...
In other words, PEOPLE ARE LAZY AND WANT TO HAVE FUN.

I'd have to agree... If i ever have to sit through that physics class again...
So far the professor has taken 1 hour 30 minutes to explain how to do dimensional analysis... I feel like im in 9th grade science again, not college-level physics. And its a 200 level class to boot... ----- The above does not represent the opinions of my corp or alliance. |

I do miss school. The lessons were so-so but it's just the place in general... thats why I'm doing another set of A levels then going to uni . Unfourtunally I'm going to have to do the A levels on a correspondance course (self study) to get them done when I want but meh, should be worth it in the end.
I do sincerly wish I could spend forever at school (preferably with the same yeargroup) but unfortunally thats never going to happen. I just pray I get into a job with a similar atmosphere.

Its difficult to find a job with the same great atmosphere as in school. Ive had 4 jobs, and only the current one has had a great atmosphere.
My advice is to switch jobs as soon as you know that you are not enjoying what you do. Im looking forward to go to work as it is now.

School isn't great but remember you're setting yourself up for the rest of your entire life. That's forever as far as you're concerned.
So if you don't do well now, you might end up in a job with no money that you hate.
If you do well, you could end up in a job with lots of money. That you hate.
Oh yeah, and get a pension sorted out as soon as you're 18. And pay off your mortgage by the time you're 50.

Creche/preschool was horrible. Enforced bedtime, all sorts of early childhood diseases every other time I got in it, a bit too young to remember it properly. Learned to read in last year of preschool, so at least I wasn't getting bored easily, I had books to keep me busy.
Elementary school was fun. No effort, top grades, a few fights with older kids, made a lot of friends, easy as pie overall. Handwriting, ungh. I used to write the way you see books printed. Took me a good while to get used to it, seing how I learned how to write like that before I learned how to "properly" handwrite. My handwriting STILL sucks today. Got into Sci-fi quite early on, I used to DEVOUR books, 3 to 5 weekly, depending on cash on hand. There went all my pocket change and "lunch money" until the end of highschool. Started developing a habit of getting to sleep really late (1-3 AM) and skipping school the next day... oh boy, did I rake up on "medical leaves" (or whatever those things where you claim you're sick and the doctor gives you a note that you don't have to go to school a couple of days is).
Middle school was interesting. Plenty of extracurricular competitions, shedloads of new stuff to learn, made even more friends. Then came the switch from communism to... well, non-communism, and half a year later, Hepatitis B. Got better quite fast but a lot less playtime, and got really, really fat. Social life went from hectic to moderate, too lazy to bother getting awesome grades, but still well above average with next to no effort. Plenty of TV, some Z80 programming (but mostly gaming), even more book-reading, even later hours for sleep time, even more skipping of school.
High-school was... how should I put it... hectic. Got heavily into physics and maths, winning contest after contest in school, county and country levels. Got heavily into PC gaming (hooray for Doom, Mortal Kombat, Warcraft 1, Command and Conquer). Got heavily into Sci-fi clubs too, in 10th grade we organized the national Sci-Fi convention. Yes, I kid you not, our pathetic high-school club full of teenagers not even eligible to get a driver's licence got government funding, signed up additional sponsors, organized events, shows and lectures, handled housing arrangements for guest speakers and so on... pretty damned hectic times, early post-revolution Romania. Fun as hell, but tiring to a degree you wouldn't believe. Between the sci-fi convention (excused from school during preparation and event days), my weekly local radio show (don't ask), national physics contest preparations (days off from school again) and medical "too sick for school" notes (read: too damned sleepy), I thing I MIGHT have attended about 200 hours of school in the 10th grade. 11th grade wasn't that far off either. Last year of highschool things cooled down, at least a bit.
University was... a waste of time. Literally. Non-mandatory class presence, technical university, student dorm rooms with freshly installed LAN, add in early-days internet access, easy as pie exams (I mean come on, I aced several exams without cheating and without ever attending ANY classes or labs at all) most of the time (alongside the "who the hell thought this is a thing they should teach us" ones that you finally passed on re-re-re-examination by cheating your ass off, because the teacher couldn't care less about the stuff he was teaching anyway)... can you say "recipie for procrastination" ?
First job. Ungh. Government-owned company. Loads of morons in the leadership chain. Ineptitude and uber-slacking everywhere. Took a couple of hours tops to do the things you were supposed to be doing the entire week if you had half a clue. ****ed off the "local boss" before I got hired, got slapped on with a 375-hour monthly workload going by the "normatives" (I kid you not). Still only took about 100-120 hours to sort out, would have been less if it wouldn't have involved travelling.
School was ok. |

Urgh, I hated secondary school. Least fun of my life. Unpleasant environment, unpleasant people (many of them, anyhow), unpleasant attitudes. Everything pre-secondary school was fun, and everything since has been pretty good too.
Still, might have been influenced by going to an underfunded state-school with a new administration and rapidly declining results. Probably an entirely different time if you live in an area with a good state-school, or can afford private school. And probably a lot worse if you live in an area/country with even worse state-schools (statistically, UK state-schools are head and shoulders better achieving than US ones, for example). ------

last year before i get to run of to uni and make stuff explode (well, hopefully not, i want to get into the development of artificial organs/body parts) and the worst part got to be the lack of time to play computer games ^^
Going for top grades in everything is time consuming, who would have known? But yeah... my first 10 years at school was horrible. 1-7 was spent having a teacher thinking i was the devil himself and should be sent of to a special school, then two and a half year of school -> homework -> ice hockey -> sleep followed by half a year of staying in the bed thanks to physical contact with a "half a body larger than me" defenseman from Belarus ------------------- (::) - This is a cookie with chocolate chips, and it's mine! I'll be finishing up honours in october. Uni has been the greatest experience of my life so far, I'll be sad to see it go, but happy to be earning some actual money. The thing about uni isn't the classes, it's what's outside of class that count. I've seen plenty of people go through 4 years doing nothing but studying, homework and going for the highest grades possible. Sure, they'll graduate with better marks than me, but I still pity them.

Well, the thing about that is that experience is what lands you jobs, not marks. There's an ancient uni saying- P's mean degrees. Granted, some nice marks are a bonus when going for any job, but there's plenty of ways to beat a guy with better marks than you at an interview

Im sorry but I dont really agree. I would have to say that it isnt so much the age of the professor but the passion that the professor has for the subject. The professor can be a 23 years old but it wont matter if they cant get their students interested in the subject. My absolute favorite class was asian history, which was taught by a very formal "classical" professor, suit, very strict about the subjects, and decidedly in his early 70's and the class was a 9am'er but absolutely everyone showed up each class to listen to how he discribed the time periods, the individuals of interest and so forth. This very "traditional" professor knew exactly how to communicate the subject matter to his students which in such a way that you watched to be on class on time so you wouldnt miss a thing. In my opinion such a thing is nearly a dead art. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Going to college was a great experience. However one mistake I made was skipping out on a lot of classes because they were too boring, which in the end resulted in spending far less time with friends than I could have had, because they actually went to the classes and ended up having a better time than me.
Work, well it is nice to get paid for what you do, but I can't stress how important it is to get a job where you keep on tackling new challenges and learn new things. It is a sad fact that having nothing to do or just disliking the work makes you far more tired and unhappy in the end of the day. Doesn't mean quitting right away if you don't like it, taking up things with your superior/boss first often saves more time and effort. Unless they aren't open to negotation, which means it is time to get the hell out because that will backfire on them sooner or later
And gah, posts like this always make me feel old

School was kind of sucky. Took up lots of time, more time than a full time job does in fact.
University was great. I did an easy course, so it was basically four years of almost uninterrupted free time, paid for by the government and some summer work. -

The main problem with school is the huge amount of time spent teaching you things you'll never need to use. I believe, though it seems few would agree, that school should focus you towards actually getting into a job or the next step of your education.
That means English, math and life skills should be a priority for everyone, those taking an academic route (ie. that are good at such things) should be able to study towards further education options and others should be able to gain practical skills that will line them up for an apprenticeship.
In England you can spend 9 years in school and you either come out with 3 C's+ for college or you come out having gained little since learning to read write and add-up. A lot of people leave having wasted years of effort and study in topics that don't interest them and will have no real impact on their life after completing school.
Then again I suppose we need to keep them somewhere while we force the single parents and the child raising half of couples into work and we can't be without the poorly educated masses to take on those minimum wage high tax band jobs. If these people were actually educated in school they'd realize that they're getting paid less than those on social security benefits and then we'd be a right mess.

Also, spend your time wisely. If you must choose a subject make it something practical, learn Chinese. The world gets much bigger with the right skills. ------------------------------------------

You must have gone through a really sucky education system. when doing my A levels I had 15 hours of work a week, compared to the 27 hours of work for a full time job (of actual work, so not including the hour paid lunch every day)
Not counting lunchtimes, in school it was 30 hours a week plus homework (which was easily an hour per weeknight, plus extra on weekends), my current fulltime job is 35 hours, nothing on evenings and weekends (obviously). On an average week they might be equal, overall is probably school the winner in terms of time consumption.
Now add to that that school was mostly a pain in the ass, whereas my work is interesting, and most years school was non-stop work, whereas working a desk job is more relaxed unless deadlines are close. And I get paid.
Of course, school had summer holidays, and I didn't work most summers, so over a whole year the balance might change, but a pure work to school comparison shows school taking more time. -

Yep, tbh just sounds like you had a very unlucky schooling.

I was privately educated, so my experience has been pretty horrid. From the time I was 14-18, it used to be from 8:00-5:30. My parents kept it from me until the day of the interview that I had to attend on Saturdays.
I never thought I'd bunk until I started at that place.

Well, me and everyone else in my country. The school system is a pain here, though on the other hand it is seen as very good AFAIK, so I have educational e-peen, or whatever. -

I'm pretty lucky, even though most of my departments teachers are probably in their 40s at least they're Info Tech people, and jokes on the end-user's behalf are common. ---- --- --- My views don't represent those of my corporation or alliance. |

Unlucky schooling is being kicked out of sixth-form for not attending on days where you don't have any lessons.
The expectation was that I would spend two days of the week, 12hrs total, doing pretty much nothing. After polite attempts to get my head of year to change this, and setting up a petition I was kicked from the school when they discovered I'd taken the issue up with the education authority... not in person I simply received an official letter during the half-term stating that I was being expelled due to a my poor attitude with regard to school rules.
Worst of all I actually attended those non-lesson days during the entire debacle.
I fought the law alone... I wouldn't recommend it.

Uni was great, though I didnÆt go the traditional route. Actually, I ended up using a good portion of my student loans to travel the world. While completing Uni took me 7 years and $30K; it was totally worth it. DonÆt think IÆll ever have a mid-life crisis where I feel the need to do things I never got the chance to.
School is really what you make of it, you get back what you put in. if you approach you education as something tedious and boring that must be endured, well thatÆs what youÆll get. When I started Uni, all I could think about was making the big bucks. I pursued finance and economics as a degree because I thought it would make me lots of $$. It was boring as hell and my attitude and grades reflected that. When I finally got the nerve to take a break and do some traveling, I began to see the world in a different light. Upon my return, I decided to ditch economics and study history instead. (not the survey intro courses where you buy one textbook and learn about dates and places, but the seminars where you read numerous books by those that were there living while things were happening). It made my subsequent travels all the more interesting, I could visit a place and understand a bit of their culture and history. Once I graduated (with my history degree) I refused to listen to all those that insisted that my only option was to teach high school. I got a job working for a bank and used my life experience and ability to communicate to my advantage. Now IÆm a successful banker managing a commercial real estate portfolio worth millions.
Moral of the story: donÆt do something just because everyone says thatÆs how it should be done. Make your own path and do something you enjoy. If you can manage this, you will be successful in your work, and the $$ often follow success.

Edited by: soldieroffortune 258 on 28/08/2008 22:45:44 eh, its kinda hard to enjoy school when you had parents like me (mostly step-father, hated the hell out of that man, we even got into a few fights when his ass was drunk, and he never learned, that if you cant walk straight, why swing at someone and start a fight? i honestly laughed when i saw all the blood from his face dripped on the sidewalk like polka dots AND they were there for like a week, right next to his parking spot across the street to remind him)
anyway, when you have a drunk step father getting on your case about "being lazy", and your mom doesnt do anything about it IE agrees with him or goes with it to avoid an argument, its kinda hard to enojy school, especially when you also have a brother and sister to watch out for, and in Las Vegas when you have the wannabee gangsters walking around
i really wish i couldve grown up in a small town, dont have to worry about the "gangsters" nearly as much, and can actually fight back w/ out 18 neighbors calling the cops and making a scene about it
i still hate that man to this day
EDIT: it also helps when your school has a higher graduation rate, i think my school had like only a 60% graduation rate, then you have to worry about those "gangsters" shooting at bus stops ( has happened like 3 times last year i think, gangsters shooting bus stops ) and school shootings
again, another benefit of small towns, and no "gangsters"
i think we should just take all the gangsters, throw them in vegas, take everyone else out, and lock the city down, let them kill each other for "respect" or "rep" or "street rep" or what the hell ever, then kill the survivors
