Edited by: Spaztick on 04/09/2008 01:29:11 You know I was thinking yesterday that with all the EVE advertisement on the escapist website, Yahtzee was bound to eventually make a review on it.
Edit: And yes he has in fact made several games, all of which are kick ass adventure games (except for Art of Theft, which is a platformer). They all tie into one another, and I do recommend them. Donate if you feel like it, I think they're worth it. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post.

He tells it as it is, though he ought to have joined a snigwaffe or something if he wanted to enjoy it. EVE is boring apart from pvp, the pve side is awful and would need a complete overhaul to be anything near fun.

That was quite funny. But really he just sounds like a ****ing noob when he's talking about pvp lacking tactics and so on. EVE online pvp is probably one of the deepest pvp systems in in an mmo game. It's also one of the most exhilarating, because unlike WOW clones, you actually lose things of worth.
Yes EVE pvp probably does seem pretty simplistic to those who don't actually understand it.
His final comment about EVE being like a second job you have to pay for, seems to describe the direction of the game has been going in since 2004 though.

It's not odd that he thought PvP was shallow if he only spent 2 weeks playing. He wouldn't have had the skills for e-war modules, MWDs, decent tanking modules, or even a ship that was capable of doing anything remotely interesting.
That said, he makes valid points. He's telling us his perception of the game from the perspective of a noob. And yes, Eve is actually a fairly terrible game if you're a noob, and it puts off a lot of people from playing. __________________________

was very funny, and I can see where a lot of his observations were coming from (much of eve must seem WTF to people who've played a lot of the modern MMOs...my experience went from Ultima Online to EVE so it wasn't much of a transition)
However...he points out himself that he was only looking into playing it for a short time period, and presumably did so at a casual level...whether it's a flaw or an advantage is debateable, but from my experience you can't get much out of eve that way, or at least not initially.
edit: his voice sounded very similar to me to the guy who does the 'round up of the weeks silly videos' on friday on the bbc website (i've forgotten what it's called) - I checked and it wasn't the same guy. so it's possible he just has a voice-that's-similar-to-other-people re: the virgin adds __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus

Not his best review, focused too much on the generic 'spotty nerd' approach. He has done better. Still quite funny with some excellent lines though.
He did miss the point of almost every aspect he criticised (the criticism of the skill system, for instance, is a classic from people who haven't actually thought about it). But I stopped listening to it as a review and took it as a funny noob rant from the point where he said he avoided player corporations anyway. Still, to have even that perspective on EVE done Zero Punctuation style is awesome.
I'd love it if he learned to play the game and did another review from the perspective of someone who knows what they're doing. -

The second I heard "keeping away from player corporations" I braced myself for a bad reveiw. Everyone I know who played Eve and got bored didn't join player corporations, I think they should just dump people in player corps from the start! |

It's not Yahtzee's fault if the new player experience is about as appetising as shit sammiches.
I don't know why people are saying Player Corporations are the answer to everything.
While I'm sure some of them massively enhance your experience as a new player that certainly isn't a guaranteed outcome. In some of them he'd be worse off than in a decent NPC corp. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I love all of the people who dislike him now because he bashed Eve. "He doesn't like my game so he's a moron!" Lol cry more. I think he nailed Eve for the short time he was given. Seriously, if Eve were as good as the brainwashed people here think it is then it would probably have a lot more players. But it doesn't and it's been around plenty long enough to have a WOW sized player base. I think thats partly because of shitty beginning to the game(IE: the first six months or so) and partly because of the absolute low quality of the average player. Honestly, 90% of people I have met in Eve are complete *******s. And another honest truth is that if I hadn't started so long ago I would probably quit as well. I didn't truly start having fun until about a year and a half in. and even that didn't last forever. I log in maybe once a week now. All of the people I personally know who used to play have quit and I don't enjoy the game like I used to. This is all subjective though, and I could be wrong. Terrible tradgedy.

And to all of you who say "oh well he didn't join a corp"... Think about most of the corps that he'd have likely ended up with in Empire. Yeah, Eve got off lightly.

I find it surprising how many EVE players agree with Yahtzee. I can understand people who played it for two weeks "doing it wrong", but people who have been playing it for months or years... while I am well aware many people play EVE under big misconceptions, it is still surprising to see. -

It's obvious he didnt *play the game*. He probably just installed it and tarded around in space for a few hours imagining all the geeks with hygeine problems. His 'review' was a parody of himself.
The pure pwnage parody hit the nail on the head. EVE is far from perfect, but his review was a disgrace to the field of journalism.
