Incase some of you haven't read the latest front page news Linkage
tl;dr CCP is fixing the lag!
Personally i havent been online very much lately due to the fact im moving in to my new place tomorow ( ) and have spent the last few days moving endless packages of **** into storage.
However, ive popped on every now and then and personally, i think CCP has done a pretty amazing job so far. I've never really had any complaints with the lag.. i tend to stay out of 500v500 ***fests and jita had never really been a problem for me. However, in my "on time" ive been sorting out my assets in and around jita, and performance has been great!
so
Thumbs up to CCP, nice one.
(i do not work for, represent, or get any free beer from CCP, infact i dont really know why i started this thread.. meh)

You can't fix lag, ever, unless you have a supercomputer that can run atleast two crysis simultaneously.
And even then, the law of "directly proportional funtime" law demands players try to run three of the buggers.
With added mods for more graphics.
And pie makers.

As that generally excellent blog also says, is that we players have noticed the better performance and have started pouring even more people into the fleets.
1200 locals have rarely been seen since the Great Lag War (BoB vs. Goon). I hope that CCP recognizes that they will never have enough CPU power to handle our blobbing ways and don't drain their coffers trying.
There are some odd 30 minute lag periods happening in some constellations (FW) from time to time, very strange.

Nice misqoute.
It is OPTIONAL. If you WANT to report a fleet fight before it occurs then the Virtual World Operations Team (the server admins, not the GM's) will look at the data and see if they can preemptively accommodate you onto one of the new nodes. If you chose not to make use of this functionality then that is your choice.
As it is your choice the results of using this feature or not are also in your hands.

CCP should write a complex algorithm to try and predict battles before they happen!
Then one day someone will discover it works for reality too. And CCP will become famous having invented a machine that can predict the future.

Can CCP unequivocally state that no server admins are members of alliances who potentially may take part in a fleet battle?
And what controls are in place, be they policies, process or oversight by CCP Internal Affairs that ensures "arms length" separation between CRITICAL information on fleet engagements and CCP staffers or affiliates not obtaining advance warning of this information?

You really think both sides do not know in advance when the battle will happen ? It's not like POS'es will exit reinforced unexpected or systems where blobs jump on cyno jammers are not already active conflict zones. The question is just if you ask the node to sit on reinfonced machine if you excpect to see more than 500 participants in the event.

CCP Mindstar replied with this information in the official Dev Blog Comments thread. I can only assume you are ignoring that response and continuing your allegation in this thread for some other motive than actual reporting of information. So I will answer your questions.
I can't answer that as I do not know what alliances my fellow employees are or are not in. It is not something that is talked about round the office. Are some in alliances? I assume so, but do not ask.
Is this entire reporting system watched by Internal Affairs? Yes. Are Internal Affairs in an Alliance? No.

Hmm, maybe. It's not always so easy to get 800 people together - it's a lot easier to get 200-300.
Once it's no longer possible to hope to win 250vs250 on a roll of the lag-dice, we may see a change in ways.

to all those naysayers "you cant fix lag people will just bring 2000-3000 etc..
well its highly unlikely.. its hard work getting 500 people to do extremely boring tasks for hours a night at your whim.. its even harder to get 1000, 2000 and so on to turn up to all these fights.. it just wont happen, it doesnt work like that, and to top it off.. its just not efficient.

The sort of battles that will need this reinforcement will be POS's coming out of reinforced most likely (not going in). And so who knows about it via reporting is likely moot, since it's probably on the public forums already by that stage.
I don't think there's any point in getting them to reinforce a node you're going to do a 'surprise' attack on anyway. If it's really a surprise, there won't be enough people there to require reinforcement, and those that are won't be doing alot of shooting.

Hey all,
Just to chime in and echo what Lingorm has said - this system is entirely optional. The main point of announcing this is to let players know that we are listening - if you want to let us know. You don't have to tell us if you don't want to, but on the other hand we don't always know where these big fights are taking place.
Of course, if we get a notification we will do our homework to make sure that requests are valid. Similarly, we are not going to listen to people who are just messing around.
If you have any concerns, please do send a mail to Internal Affairs.

To those (very) hardworking developers reading this THANK YOU.
I have been living in 0.0 for some time now and I really want to help fight for my home. Indeed M-0 is one of the places I'd be fighting.
However, real life causes my time ingame to be precious and frequently stolen from other things (like sleep as I refuse to spend less time with my family). Because of that, heading out to a lag fest is simply a waste of precious entertainment time. I've done it once and the game was sufficiently broken as to make it most un-fun despite the victory for our team and getting out with reasonable contribution and a ship intact. Despite the positive outcome it just wasn't fun.
Now - you're working diligently on that. You've been listening despite all the whines and foolishness and trolling and quietly working to do the job that needed doing.
You guys and gals rock. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Thank you from the very bottom deck of my Dominix.

Quick technical question :
I'm not a huge user of Python. Really my experience with Python is some maintenance work on some outmoded systems during a vendor transition period prior to a rewrite of the software. My question is - does C++ interop have full power of C++? That is to say, is it possible to swap out modules written in Python with C++/C interop code and get the full power of multithreading?
If that is possible, how married are you guys to the Windows operating system for your servers?
Curious because we've had a lot of success using these for extremely high throughput operations:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(microprocessor)
The easiest implementation is basically to dedicate one SPE essentially to one type of operation in a chain of operations or more generally, dedicate a set of SPE's to one logical operation that might be composed of different calculations. Its incredibly good for physics and graphics operations (check out the sample "real time ray casting" example - its similar to what we've implemented in the past in terms of how the larger architecture works.
The downside to Cells is that right now there is no way to run Windows natively on a Cell processor without some ugly emulation layer.

It's reading blogs that this one that restore my faith in CCP and remind me that I'm lucky to playing a game where the company who created it actually CARE enough about it to invest this kind of time and effort inoto improving the game play for us players.
THANKYOU CCP!!!
P.S. Please reconsider the nano nerf! Removing nano from the game would remove a lot of fun without significantly improving the gameplay. Yes, some tweaking is certainly required but not a general nerf across the board. Spending time and effort on fixing fleet combat is far more important right now.

This is exciting news.
There probably is a bit to think about, regarding the "if the system holds more, everyone brings more".
Heck, the dev-blog even mentions that, with pilots constantly arriving in Jita 'til maxxing at 1400 (usually best avoided at 700)... and that one fleet-fight going smooth at 1000, 'til 1200 got crammed in. I bet that last 200 wouldn't have even bothered showing up, if both sides were being told by their FC's that the system had been a 30-minute slideshow for the past hour and that the stargates were foo-bar.
Then again, that's a pretty exceptional fleet-fight, I would think.
I just think it's absolutely remarkable, given the entire scale of the galaxy. When I first started, you could log in with an average of 9000 pilots in my US timezone. It's now common to be 4 times that! I don't know what the euro-numbers are, but I believe it's even more.
Between the continuing rise of the population, racing against the game's architecture and upgrades... it blows my mind.
The effort that has been put in, to keep EVE as a single-world, is astonishing.
I'm just ramblin' now.

Cell processors arent that much more powerful than normal procs, they just go about processing differntly that they require 3x lines than normal to get the most out them you could so with more lines of code being processed alot of power gets lost on syncronizations and ultimatly eve is single threaded still, cell processors are far more haplass in this area as they are multithread beasts and nothing else much really.
If cell processors are that much more powerful, how come the availability of it for the civillian gamer market is not widespread aside from the prebuilt consoles systems? There are obvious drawbacks for normal non specialized market use probably because of more technical and software reasons.
And dont go argueing that cell procs are the most powerful in the world. They arent, IBM probably has already invented the most advanced cpu we'll ever create until we figure out how to make computer chips out of subatomics to bad its no where near practicle.
CCP choice in intel procs is a semi-smart choice, they save on training, they save on known working and proven technologies, and better yet better customer support as the company tech reps are more familiar with this system and as its more popular allows for more 'common' problems to make them further experts on these issues where as the lesser known cell procs would probably force extended pay, plane trips, and possibly know known good solution.
