Worst Caldari punishment has been stricken from the books, in the old days we would paint a bullseye on someone's butt and send them off to Gallente Space. Now we consider an execution more humane.

Be prepared for one of the stupidest/lamest reasons for a race pick ever. I wanted to go with a female character and the one i chose with Gallante seemed to be the better looking of the lot. I had no aspirations other than mining and knew that whatever race i chose i could fly other ships, still do mining (my initial goal of starting the game) and if i found that my choice was stupid i could just pick another character later.

I was playing Earth & Beyond when Eve was in beta, kept hearing about the number of systems and the skill mechanism (anyone could train anything and points being clock-based rather than grinding).
I checked the website out a few times and intended to go Minmatar (always seemed Maori themed to me).
By the time I actually subscribed, though, I was sick of RL goth kids and hippies so I went Caldari to blow up their internet spaceships.
WhatÆs kept me here is that I keep finding ways in which I suck at Eve. ItÆs kinda like golf. I canÆt leave Eve until IÆm good at it, and I canÆt seem to stop being terrible.

When i first started EvE, Minmatar was the choice for me. As someone from the middle east/africa who grew up with tales of Post-Colonial struggles, I identified easily with the Minmatar. Recently emerging from slavery/exploitation/occupation, they are trying to find their place in the world and take care of unfinished business, much like the third world in the 1950's. All my characters are Minmatar without exception.
I had not heard of EvE before I bought it. I ended up joing 3 days after Tranq went live. It was there on the shelf at Best Buy, I did not have any MMOs on my plate at the time so I gave it a twirl. My first impression was that the world was huge. Those first few weeks were amazing. Has EvE fullfilled its promise for me? I guess so, but I will admit there are a few things that annoy me. I know why lag happens, I know its not CCP's fault, but CCP cannot and must not use large fleet battles to market or publicize the game until they can make the game run smoother in that kind of environment. I guess that is what really annoys me. -------------------

About the lag part I thought were getting massive upgrades to server hardware and with the whole stacklessIO? Isn't even running way better now? I can't tell since I haven't played in awhile and haven't been in a large fleet in months.

Before playing Eve i hoped it would be somewhat like Elite, the first computer game i ever played, i wasn't dissapointed.
I didnt choose a race at all, i quickly made 4 different trial accounts and had a toon on each one. 1 Amarr, 1 Caldari, 1 Gallente and 1 Minmatar. Doing some missions, some exploring, some trading and some mining on each of them to learn the game while reading everything on the "new player" forums religiously. I just happend to be on my gallente character at the time i made some friends and was recruited into a corp, so that one stuck with me and decided to pay the subscription for.

Amarr are religious Zealots, much like our extremist Muslims. All for God.. etc etc..
Caldari = Capitalists .... nee (Americanesque?)
Gallente = French artsy faartsy types... "Can I have a croissant with that order of drones s'il vous plaint?"
Minmatar = quintessential underdog.. forced to make do with what they could get from other races to lift themselves from under the Amarr heel.. (can't think of an appropriate modern counterpart)
and I spent the first part of Eve mining and trying to figgure out what the heck I was doing.. getting blowed up .. a LOT...
oh.. and I still have the ORIGIONAL RETAIL BOX AND CD that Eve first came out on... that's gotta be worth something.. |

he does prove a point though
the way i see the races in-game are like this:
Amarr = extremist muslims Caldari = 18th and 19th century british (all about the money and assets) Gallente = America (first democratic republic of the new era) Minmatar = Africans (does that need explaining)
and iirc, not all the minmatar are black, plenty of white minmatar to go around
Amarr = Example of Catholicism unchecked and dominate. (Says so on the history that they were descended from Catholics) Caldari = Typical "1984ish" goverment. Gallente = Liberal French, example of what happens when free speech and personal freedom is completely set free. Pleasure hubs, drugs, prostitution, so on and so forth. Minmatar = African bush people in space. Frankly I'm suprised they fly rust buckets as opposed to mud huts with rocket engines attached by way of vines. So i think we can safly assume that all non-americans know that there is no similarities between Gallente and America. Regardless how cool they want to portray the US.
Lets face it, they aint made many friends

Minmatar had sunglasses.. nuff said.
When i first started playing i imagined it being something very gang/turf based, where people defend their areas, and if you cross into unfreindly territory your hunted down. Almost agressive gameplay is what i expected each Alliance constantly pushing for more land.. but as it is, they just seem happy to sit where they and destroy the odd random POS every now and again.

I started playing because I went to University and one of my friends from back home was playing, so I joined up to keep in contact while I was away. I've finished Uni now and moved back home, but EVE has stayed. Love it or hate it, it's gonna be here for a long time and I think I'll be playing it for years to come. Even if I'm not always in game due to real life, I keep my chars training and I check EVEmon every day. If it wasn't for the constant skill training I think I would've quit a long time ago... and regretted it!

I thought the caldari were more the americans/british. So i picked them.
That and they had all the technology when i read the backstory.
Always wanted to fly the Apoc though when i first started, the description for it in game just made it sound so cool.
Caldari or Amarr were the only two i wanted to play as, though caldari avatars are better looking so it was the decider.

I expected a cold, harsh place where even ammo is scarce and encounters with others uncommon (and 90% of encounters ending in a fight).
I chose Gallente after seeing my friend play eve in his mega and though "I want that ship".
In retrospect I'd have probably gone minnie for the "skip with thrusters" look of their ships.

How CCP could take what should be a compelling universe to explore, trade, and adventure in and turn it into a turgid stalemate that feels like a grind and runs like a dog is mind boggling.
Sorry to thread jerk, but the answer to this ought to be obvious. It's because the whole game is so complicated. It was never going to be possible to balance anything perfectly out of the box - let alone predict the combination of factors that have decided the current "end" political situation in the game (I hope the lame two-sided stalemate changes eventually). Most of all, we know for certain that CCP simply weren't prepared for the growth in the player population.
People only ask questions like this because they're so completely submerged in the game, so much that their involvement in the unintended consequences of imperfect game mechanics stops them from seeing it this way. So I guess in that sense it's a good thing.
