I believe its because of playability, ability to see people in your fleet in which system, and finally - Because removing local makes it harder to find people than the benefit that surprise can add. in addition, covert ops warping in would pretty much be too powerful. (they are practically balanced because you can see people in local.) Another one bites the dust. |

i believe its the other way around, ironically. many systems are huge. it would be even easier to rat given the aggressors wouldn't be able to find a presence in most systems. forget that it even favors and further causes the need for a second account (permanent scout, and with dual monitors to always watch the back gates or gate for warp ins to confirm identity or to give you time to dock up/SS and cloak should it feel hostile. Another one bites the dust. |

Edited by: Avon on 12/10/2008 12:04:12 The problem is introducing a replacement without generating too much server load.
I'd like local to display characters (or ship types) within (0.25 AU * your ship's sensor strength)*((system security status+0.1)*their ship's sig radius), with that information shared with any other fleet members in the same system .. but I'm not sure it would be workable (and the numbers would probably need tweaking).
The overall effect would be intel aquired from local would be automatic, but would depend on system security rating and the type of ships involved.

See, i had a different idea, that Empire and Lowsec, should have something held by the empires themselves to preserve local, and 0.0 should have nothing.
What gives you the right to free intel, be you hunter or hunted?
How much less would cloaking ratters be bothering roamers (cause lets be honest, go roaming in 0.0 your looking for ratters, theres nothing else to find unless your going to see one of the big fights going on, which right now is restricted to the node crashing north) if local was gone?
Who the hell cares if it takes forever to check a system for people, the point is, if there WERE people in it, you would actually be able to catch them before they cloaked/safespotted/ran to their tower.
Right now BECAUSE of local, there is NOTHING you can do to catch a ratter (and i dare somebody to prove me wrong) who is paying attention in 0.0 because he is already in his hiding spot and cloaked or at his tower by the time you get in local. Please note i said one who is paying attention, we can all catch the idiots who go for a drink while ratting.
Right now, BECAUSE of local, fleets disband and go home, or sit in POS's for hours at a time because "Im not jumping my fleet into your 100+ guys in that system that my scout knew was there the very second he jumped in with absolutely 0 leg work done". Without local, the use of covops scanning alts would massively increase, perhaps giving a new job for the lower sp guys besides "inty pilot tackler". You would actually need to scout for your fleet.
Its funny to see this same "your I-win button" phrase touted around by all the anti-nanno guys right now, but I'm willing to bet the bank that 90% of those guys would scream bloody murder about the loss of their "I-win button" free intel tool being taken away.
In short, loose local, and don't replace it with ANY free intel tool. You should, like everything else in EVE, need to work for your intel.

Here is the BEST WAY to fix the whole local argument one and for all that will appease EVERYBODY --
Are you ready ...?
... Here it is ...
Change the LOCAL chat-channel to a CONSTELLATION chat-channel. This allows it to be used as an intel-device (ie: see who is in the constellation) but you don't know what system they are in (thus forcing you to use your scanner).
^^^ that would solve everybodies problems.
Now STFU. ~Solo Hoist The Colors. (CEO) Pirate Coalition (Yar?) |

Local is somewhat realistic. We have transponders on our ships (at least it is talked about for npc ships in the news), which a stargate reads and broadcasts to the system, so you know who is comming and going. They could do a test run by saying some virus infected that part of the stargates program, if it doesn't work as they'd like, they can just write up a piece on how some programmer was able to correct the problem and reinstate it.

Depending on the pilots standings, the directional scanner adds a red, yellow, white, blue, or green dot next to the ship on scans.

what about Local, with visible only those who write something PLUS you can see the number of people in system - I some how think this information can be shared (public) once you jump through the gate. A bit hybrid probably but can feed both sides imo... __________________________________ I do it myyyy wayyyy... Milky Way. |

I think a new system altogther is needed, probably something based upon a 'sliding scale' scanner.
Ramp up your scanner to a high frequency and you 'loose' long range situational awareness (i.e local) but your over view will show close range smaller objects (like a frigate). Drop to a lower frequency range and your scanner picks up increasingly larger objects (BS, Gates, belts Moons, Planets etc etc). Thus at the lowest frequency range you get a 'local count' but cant 'lock' small items close to you.
Might have an effect on focused fire and blobs aswell?

It would indeed be better than now, though only marginally.
At least you would be giving up something for your intel, whereas now, its totally free, all the time.
It kills immersion, it makes roaming virtually useless, and it stops fights that would otherwise likely happen simply because your opponent knows your there, or knows your coming, with NO work done on your part other looking at the local window.
All in all, it would be a nice change, something to possibly test out

Not really. One would still need to constantly spam the scanner to get somewhat reliable intel. It sucks and it's boring, but it would be required.
Scanner needs to be improved before it can be expected replace local. But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

Allthough playing eve for 3 years now i only been in 0.0 for almost a year now. But i must agree here, allthough local chat can stay remove option to see how many and who are in the system. Or let it work like any big chat channel works to only show recent speakers. So i you decide to talk in local everybody in that system will know you are in it so you decided on your own to give away that your in the system.
It will make 0.0 alot harder but alot more intresting indeed. I mean in terms of realism, if we had interstellar space flight you would not be able to know before hand how many people would occupy a system essecially not when people are cloaked. Then everytime you visit a system it will be a whole new experience. I definately vote for this.

Removal of local means: (a) More paranoia, less actual fighting. (b) Spamming scanner every 10 seconds totally mandatory. (c) High-sec wars virtually impossible. (d) Force recon gangs 100% overpowered.
So, no.

This sounds nice. Or maybe add an AWACS-like ship type with an adjustable scanner, which can scan the system to get local info? Maybe the scanner wouldn't work inside a POS shield and/or while cloaked so attackers can knock out the defenders intel.

Yes lets remove local. In the meantime, lets remove the overview and only be able to target ships you only see on your screen.

Oh and can you imaging the fun of spending 15mins warping from planet to planet scanning only to find there is actually no one in the 158 AU system.
It would make those roaming ops so much more fun.

Originally by: Feriluce Removing local in 0.0 would make it a much more interesting place. You'd actually have to be in guard and use the scanner instead of just relying on a chatwindow to see who's in the same system as you. It would make ambushes be actual ambushes, and it would make a cov ops more fun and vital to fly.
It would be easy to implement too. Just make it like corp chat, where you only see ppl in the chat after they've said something.
/random rant
The stupidity of this idea is that like many whines, it does not think about how players will RESPOND to the change in the threat environment.
As stated by many, thousands of players hitting scan every two seconds would noy be good for the game from a server load, or playability issue.
I'm actually not against local removal, depending on what tool is added to the game to REPLACE it.
Increasing the boring work load only for the other guy is the mark of a stupid idea.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

At this point in EVEs life removing local would be as devastating as the NGE was to SWG back in 2005. It is a matter of practicality, for CCP to function as a business they have to have customers. Alienating those customers would hurt future revenue.
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts. |
