I dont like to compare EVE to other MMO's, but i was wondering something...
In GuildWars at Christmas and Halloween there was allways something happening in the main city of the game (jita in our case).
I was just wondering if CCP has any plans for this years christmas... perhaps bring the snowball launcher back into play, or give the ability on november to buy a firework launcher?
I know this post sounds lame, but i enjoy these types of things where the devs spend alittle time to get into the spirit of things :D

I miss the santa hats and xmas-gift backpacks from Planetside…
Then again, I don't even want to imagine how silly most ships would look if you stuck a hat on them.

Perhaps it would be funnier to be able to have Santa's Sleigh as a ship? :P

*random thought*
I don't like the Idea of celebrating Christmas or whatever (unless it was a Very Amarr Christmas), but I don't think it would be a bad idea to have, say, fireworks or such in the game, a module to could activate for celebrations.
You know, like a 51 gun send off and such--without the fear of Concord poping your ship's for using real weapons.

I wouldnt mind waking up to find a baby jove egg in my hold on easter morn.
Anything else though, i would frown upon. Festive items are a slippery slope to christmas hats and halloween lanterns. Not in my genocidal theocracy !

Vote NO to old Earth holiday events that have no place in EVE.
Vote YES to more ingame events that do have a place in New Eden :)

I actually like the fact that EVE *doesn't* do things ingame for holidays, for the most part. It doesn't quite make sense in terms of the game's backplot anyway.

Those silly Amarrians might celebrate the coronation of their new oppressive leader--err, I mean empress, while we Minmatar would celebrate independence.

I don't mind if we get rare stuff for free.
It not like in other games where you have limited space to keep useless trash like this, here you just bung it in some container and wait till it gains some value.
As for me taking part in any seasonal event, I think not. My balls dropped a long time ago, so I don't feel need to celebrate festivals about mythical creatures like witches, ghosts and Jesus Christ.

Well for instance rather than trying to cram halloween or christmas into EVE, look at the races and their backstory and take some significant events in their history and turn those into an annual celebration instead. As already suggested the Minmatarr might celebrate some sort of day of independence day, whereas I imagine the Amarr to have at least several religious celebrations / festivals. The Caldari might have some national trading day.
How to implement these sorts of celebrations into the game and make them more than just an RP event is the real question. I imagine on national trading day you could for instance give a hefty discount on sales taxes and brokers fees. But having people flying around in santa's sleds or (once ambulation is released) walking around wearing christmas hats is something I'd rather not see.

Edited by: Astria Tiphareth on 21/10/2008 13:51:56 Edited by: Astria Tiphareth on 21/10/2008 13:48:53 From an RP perspective, many thousands of years have passed and many light-years have been travelled since the original festive holidays of Earth. At best, some might survive in half-remembered rumours or commercialised sales days.
Christmas is a religious holiday - the Amarr are religious but they don't quite strike me as the Santa, funny hat, party type. The remaining civilisations don't ever seem to have had much in the way of organised religion per se, at least from the backstory I've scoured.
I think events in other MMOs as described are often fun, but usually characterised by silly stuff (not being critical, merely descriptive) like odd hats, changes to scenery that have no bearing whatsoever on the actual MMO, and odd quests. Moving those sorts of changes to EVE would seem.... very strange.
However, that doesn't mean you can't have any at all. We all got a free Jovian shuttle on EVE's 5th birthday. Equally you can have in-game events based around major EVE calendar events. The coronation for Amarr, independence (Minmatar and Caldari), Gallente... could probably celebrate the end of the Caldari-Gallente war or the birthday of Rouvenor or something.
What would happen on these days? EVE space is as dull as a very dull black empty box when it comes to events, NPCs and so on, even on a good day.
Edit: Now Ambulation would present more of a chance for this sort of thing... ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... Environmental Effects

Actually in the Christmas when snowballs were brought in, there WAS a santa's sleigh. If I remember correctly it was a Jove ship as the sleigh itself, and several Ogres in 2 rows as the reindeer (one ogre had a red nose!).

Maybe if such a thing was worked into the back story. All Amarr called back to the homeland for a holiday season reflection, Gallente partying like they should, Caldari cranking out the goods, Minmatar planning on invading Amarr on their holy day, etc. Nothing that would really require the player to act but something that you might expect the four empires to do for each of their citizens. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
