Rather than ask for the "most uberest ship evar!", I figured I'd ask a question that is more near and dear to my heart. I want a ship that is capable of killing anything (as in, breaking their tank), and will tank like a badarse.
A few candidates... Drake (and that entire Caldari shieldtanking bunch) Abaddon (tasty armor resist bonus) Gallente Domi (don't spend time on damage modules, drones do it for you)
Also worth noting would be the Caldari Command ship...all the advantages of firing missiles with the 5% per level of BS (iirc) shield resists. I'd love to hear people's opinions on a great tank to take through missions. I will also be taking it into combat exploration sites, but I don't think that changes things much.

Bolded statements mismatch.
But yes, one of the shieldtankers would be it. I'm guessing nighthawk with some kind of dual deadspace booster setup however the rokh and golem are probably close seconds.

the ishtar has a 14k hp tank when fitted properly. 95 kinetic and 85 thermal with comp skills to lvl 4. 50 on explosive and 0 on em, but she can tank all but one lvl 4 mission that I have run across with the true f****rs all resists do well with the active hardeners being the best and drone control being out to 65km with locking distance just beyond 70km with my skills. a beast if I do say so myself

Dominix, thats what im flying and i get in a mission over 90% resistance vs 2 resists, plus 2 armor reppers 2 and if u use 5 cap chargers i can have 2 large armor reppers 2 keep going non stop without cap drain,
in other words, very good tanking,
the damage it put out is not amazing though it does the job but... nothing fanzy

Actually, you just need decent skills and a proper fit. I haven't met any L4 mission that couldn't be soloed in a Drake. When I gave it up in favour of a NH it was already dealing around 400 DPS combined (T1 Scourge + T2 Hobgoblins).
Quote: But yes, one of the shieldtankers would be it. I'm guessing nighthawk with some kind of dual deadspace booster setup however the rokh and golem are probably close seconds.
Passive NH works too. Not that great of a tank compared to a Drake (against EM/EXP incoming, that is) but still more than enough for most missions, while having a better DPS. Sure, you could get an awesome tank by active-tanking it (esp. if you use deadspace boosters and/or crystal implants), but a passive tank is cheap and still adequate.
For instance, I just completed one of the more leisurely L4s (Sansha version of "The score") in slightly above half hour never going below 80% shield in "absolute lazy mode" (i.e. using Hydra FOF instead of regular Thunderbolt, and not even bothering with the drones at all). The only L4 that should even cause you any worries at all is Enemies Abound 5/5, where using CN ammo would be advisable.

Well as Akita says the Nighthawk, I have yet to see a L4 mission where that ship had to jump out. Assuming a pilot with good skills ofcourse and a good active tank setup.

It's a bit of a stupid question really, no offence.
A passive Drake will tank anything you'll see in L4s, and kill things (slowly).
The "best tank for L4 missions" is "just enough tank, the rest gank".

Same here. Mostly it's within 10% of the speed. The exceptions are the Extravaganzas where my CNR is less than an hour and the NH is 1hr20.
But my NH is a silly pimped tank. Two (sometimes three) SPRIIs, 3 LSEIIs and T2 purgers plus standard faction (ie;Dread/Pith) hardeners. It's rare to see the shields drop below 80% and only AE4 or full room aggro on Pirate Invasion pushes them down below 70%. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

Kronos
Can attack from range with 425mm railgun II's. Has a decent drone bay to deal with the smaller ships. The weapon upgrades of Magnetic Field Stabiliser II's and Tracking Enhancer II allows you to kick out a high amount of DPS.
Afterburner allows you to kite the spawns, reducing incoming damage but allowing you to continue to engage. Tank of Large Armor Repairer II and 3 T2 active hardeners or more depending on damage types.
Tanks every mission fine if you follow triggers and can tank the Angel Extraveganza bonus room easily if you kite.
Highs
4x 425mm Railgun II's 2 Tractor Beams 1x Salvager
Mids
100MN Afterburner II 3x Cap Recharger II's
Lows
1x Large Armor Repairer II 3x Active T2 Armor Hardeners 2x Magnetic Field Stabiliser II's 1x Tracking Enhancer II
Rigs
2x Capacitor Control Circuit I's
Drones
3x Heavy Webifier 5x Hammerhead II's
Swap some of the Mag stabs for extra hardeners depending on damage type. Pretty much perma runs.

Drake/Nighthawk/Rattlesnake if you like passive, but gimps DPS Raven/CNR fully sufficent Tank for L4 DPS are accepatable with 3-4 BCUs if you use CMs Domi also active and preaty good but also a bit Low DPS, Rails + T2 Sentrys are preaty dencend but reduces Tank Abaddon, donŠt tank it, 2 Hardners + Med Repper on mine are enught for L4(even the Guristas Assault what is a bit harder because of high EM Resists of the BS) Kronos, again donŠt tank it(especialy donŠt permatank it)(Large Repper +2-3 Hardners) itŠs the same like the Abaddon
All together if you want a good Tank use a Drone or a Missle Ship, a heavy tanked Turret ship is pointless because the tank heavyly reduce the ability to run Missions on a acceptalbe speed.

I never met a level 4 I couldn't tank or kill in my drake, but it was sloooow sometimes. (fits easy to find) So I went with: Dominix Damage Control II 3x Large Armor Repairer II 3x Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II (I actually swap around the resists on the harder ones, such as angel extravaganza, but I find even on that one this ship gets by ok as is) 5x Cap Recharger II 3x Small Tractor Beam I 3x Salvager I 3x Capacitor Control Circuit I lotsa_dronez Stable with 2 LARII's, 3 minutes with the 3rd. >450 dps with ogre II's. (HD5,DI5,and GB5, I'm training towards a carrier for corpmates). Have met things I couldn't tank with 2. Not with 3. Salvage while your drones kill. I suppose you could load up on guns too... she can fit 3 large electron blasters and 3 medium howitzers or autocannons and fire them all day. (with my skills, which include advanced weapon upgrades IV) putting down about 600 dps total. G. Indy V + 5x Expander II + 3x Cargo Optimization I Rigs = 38,433 m3 G. Indy V + 5x Expander II + 2x Cargo Optimization II Rigs + 1x Cargo Optimization I Rig = 41,848 m3 |

I can run a nice tank on my Abaddon reps up round 1840 every 12 secs or so running 2 T2 Lg reppers with nanobot and nanopump rigs plus a CCC but it is a cap hog. I can also run lvl 4's in the Apoc with stable cap running 5 tachy modulated and 2 cruise launchers and perma running the repper and active tank. But you gotta have good support skills. But nothing imo beats running a 4 with some corp mates it makes it funner and faster

Domi is hard to beat tank wise.
2x LAR 2 4x resists 1x Cap Power Relay 2 5x Cap Recharger 2 3x Aux Nano Pump This is cap stable.
Plus you can also fit 5x Dual 250mm rails and a Smart bomb if you wish more DPS.
For even more tank you could fix 2 Amarr Navy Reppers but your cap runs out after 5 mins |

Soloed it in my Drake. No warpouts. 90% of running L4s comes down to tactics. Some missions require you to move a bit, and not just sitting there tanking all the damage at once. If you string out the rats you'll be taking less damage (by the time the last group spawned I was so far away that they never engages).

I run missions out of Minnie space, so yeah, never done that one.
I think I could though. I cleared Angel Extracrispy bonus room with the wrong resists attached (I got cross eyed when fitting.. em/exp against kin/exp/therm ftw!). |

My Kronos permatanks 235 DPS, a bit over 300 for a some Minutes it can still run L4 smoth, even Recon, WC or Blockade no big deal. The key qutestion is can your Kronos put 800 DPS out and got a Tracking of 0.3 rad? A Mission ship can have enught Tank, it can never have enught Damage or Tracking... |

ok some major problems with this post.
First off to do level 4's quickly and efficiently you DO NOT need the best tank possible.
Seriously what does it matter if you can tank 2000dps if the mission only does 300dps.
In other words the best tank is the tank that can handle the damage output of the mission and allow you to fit as much dps as you possibly can to finish the mission faster.
More tank does not always equal better. More gank is always better. Find the mix of both those that your skill will allow you to tank the mission and maximize your gank. |

This could not be more true. You need to change your ship set up for each mission so that you tank the most common dmg types (kill the outlyers that is the sansha nashon nephlem which does some EM dmg, and your tanked for exp and kin) so as always knowledge is the best weapon. Its also the best tank.
the 3 minutes it takes to swamp moduals before a misson can save you 20 min + durning.

Edited by: Ezekiel Sulastin on 27/10/2008 10:44:22 If you want the best general mission tank, I'd go for the Dominix. If you fly against mainly Kin/Therm/Exp in that order, go for a passive-shield Ishtar.
If you're soloing missions, figure out how much tank you need and fit the rest of the ship for gank. You don't need to tank dead NPCs ;) |

while it amy not have the best of damage outputs, the maelstrom has a pretty nice tank. I have fit that can tank 1200 dps of angel damage, and it permaruns (no faction/deadpsace involved). It is great as a dedicated tank in missions and plexes, as anything will have a hard time getting through it's shileds. dmage output is downright pitiful though (250 dps with EMP and 1400s) on anything but 800mm at optimal on a webbed and TPed ship.

I've had to jump out of full room aggro on Pirate Invasion (sansha) before. Of course that was with a passive tanked NH. A passive NH can handle any LVL 4 if you pay attention to aggro management. |
