I never got a message saying I was awarded so many. I had to go through the cert. planner and manually claim the 18 I had :P

You go into your cert planner, then in the lower left, select "Claim all" or whatever the option is. It'll run a progress bar, and then you'll get a notification in your log, and that also shows up onscreen.

71...I could probably claim another 20 or so within 9-14 days if I bumped up a few skills that I've been content to leave be for a while. On principle, I don't want to even own the amarr drone spec book, but training it to 4 will give me like 8 more drone certs :)

96 certificates, a bit less than I expected but it looks like it can be increased quite a bit by only training a few skills. Of course I'm not gonna change my long term goal over this, but I might reprioritise some skills (it's not like I had a detailed plan anyway).

What is the default setting? That others can see the certificates? Even characters not in your own corp?
I'd kinda like to know, before I log on and start the process...

The default is that certs are not visible to anyone else. You have to manually select which ones you want to be public, or make them all public with one button push.
Not sure how many I have. Half a dozen or so, all basic, except one standard. Many many which require a little work.

Funny thing WoW got the "Achievement" system not long ago that's pretty much exactly the same thing as these certificates.
