I think EVE is great, and I think it works great. I have never had a problem with it on XP, Windows 7, or playing it in Linux under Wine, even... unless there was some sort of massive outage.
I play all the time with people who don't get disconnected often. So, I'd tend to think that you should take some responsibility for this. There are hundreds and hundreds of reasons why you may have connection problems that all have to do with your computer and your house and your network connection.
It sucks that you're having problems, but I think that the vicious attacks going on in this thread are completely unwarranted. Obviously their server isn't closing the TCP/IP connection. If it were doing that, they could fix it, and it would be happening to everyone.
I would recommend you accept the fact that this problem is your responsibility. There's no way this sort of thing only happens with EVE. Reinstall your OS. Call your cable or phone company and tell them to come out and check your line. Replace your network cables. Try using a different router or hub. Plug yourself straight into your internet line and try it.
You can figure it out. You can do it. Stop blaming CCP.

Do you guys understand the problem or what?
EVE worked for years fine for us...
and then suddenly for all of us discos appeared...
So don't blame us, I am not paying for searching solutions that appeared because of changes in CCP's hardware or whatever.

I've started not being able to log in at all today. I log in my account, reach the character selection screen, and the news doesn't pop up and i clicking on the character does nothing. after a while, the news appears and eve disconnects. I've run a few traces to see if the problem is on my part, but the trace shows otherwise.

I have had socket closed errors on and off for a while now, ever since I have been forced to use wireless internet due to the proximity of my phone socket.
Now, every time this has happened, it has frozen my wireless adapter on my computer. It only happens with eve and never happens if I'm just logged into the net.
Its a belkin N1 router with a Belkin N1 adapter. I have no issues in terms of connection being weak or any such thing.
Every time I get a socket closed I have to unplug the wireless adapter and plug it back in to re start it.
Tried new drivers and all that jazz, as well as numerous firewall settings and router settings.
For the last week, I have bought a stupid long cable, and plugged my router directly into my computer via cabled lan.
Whilst this looks ugly running around my house, I no longer have socket closed error and no disconnects from eve.
Since this only happens with eve though, eve must do something to my wireless connection some how to freeze it. It really does only happen with eve as I play lots of online games and am on the net all the time and it does not effect it.
I have no idea what it is.
All I can say is that if you are really having problems, and you are using wireless, try it cabled.
It is eve. Whether its the server connection or the client, who knows. All I know is with the wireless, with pretty much the most powerful stable connection you can buy, I get socket closed. Without it, I have not one issue what so ever.

and what of the noobs? if you have the knowledge to fix a problem like this yourself, i agree, fix it yourself, or at least give it an attemp. for me however i know nothing of computers, and im sure there are a few out there like myself. i have tried to fix it myself but i cant seem to narrow down the problem anywhere. usually id grasp some idea of what the issue is, google it and find a way to fix it. but this socket problem seems to be doing some sort of ninja'ing on me. i get the net up and running in my new flat along with a new router. eve is fine for a week after the latest exspansion and everything. after then it starts getting laggy and starts closing itsself down by itself. 2 week mark i have to reduce the graphics and everything else cause the lag was getting so bad. then i started getting the closed socket thing and i couldnt play eve at all. found this forum and started trying to fix it the same way as other people had claimed it had worked for them. started off with turning off the music in the background, and eve worked fine for a bit but started crashing again, tried opening the help channel in eve and eve worked fine again, then started to crash a day or so later. in the end every time i tried someone's solution it would work for an hour up to a day, after that they never seem to work again. so i cant tell where to start. changed router, isp thing, different settings on everything. i admit i have'nt tried ALL the solutions. but i dont understand how so many different things, some that dont even relate to each other (i.e ip address to winamp media player) can affect eve in the same way (no more closed socket) to just end up failing all together. im not mad at ccp for this, after all everyone F***s up now and then. but it would be nice if they could organise a wee list or something, for all the things that will cause/save you from a closed socket. cause atm, if i wasnt confused enough by a computer, this socket thing is just, well, more confusing

My problems with socket closed after idleing have not happened for a week now. Also, the patch notes say something about network changes but is not very clear about what was changed and whether in fact CCP is admitting that the problem was on their end, and that they have fixed it. Could we get a Dev response as to what was causing this issue please?
Anyone else stopped having socked closed problems of recent?

Dont understand this at all, never heard of this problem until after todays patch. Before, not a single problem. After, I cannot log on for more than 30 seconds of normal gameplay before being booted.
I tried the suggested fix, changing my port to 3724, immidietely booted after logon again, except now the logon took much longer.
This is really infuriating because I just upgraded to a subscription this morning only to find there was downtime for the patch, and now I have not been able to play because of this issue. I am incredibly unhappy about it. It's not an issue with my connection because I have flawless connection to every other program I can think of booting up, none of them are having problem.

Whatever you are doing, CCP, it isn't working. Dropping connections like always, sometimes in as little as 10 seconds. It isn't my router, I don't use one, so don't try to palm it off on my equipment, KTHNXBYE. Things cleared up some before 1.2 patch, but now, constant laggy behavior for Tranq database calls (market, build/invent slots, docking/undocking, etc.), then no response at all, followed by socket closed error.

It has gotten worse for me since the last patch. Seems to happen especially when I'm creating bookmarks. Game is now unplayable from my viewpoint. I am using a wireless router attached to Comcast cable for internet. In my 3 years of playing before, I never had this problem and was using wifi back then as well. I refuse to spend my time doing bug tracking and testing for CCP when I'm paying $$ for the privilege of playing.
It's a good think STOL is not public yet or I would quickly be jumping ship.

Hi there CCP.
I am, and have been one of your customers for a while now, and have been recieving these crappy socket closed errors for some time now.
I thought customer service was meant to be efficient and reliable from companies, but instead, we get bull**** answers and workarounds that don't work.
The only place i've managed to maintain a constant connection, is Jita.
I'm not a big fan of Caldari space, let alone Jita and would prefer to be able to do something elsewhere apart from sitting in a station all the time, instead of losing ships to disconnects and whatever.
Please, give us some response on this, try new fixes, stop introducing crap into the game that doesn't work until you have sorted the game out to customer specification and expectations.
I will myself be sitting in Jita until this is sorted, which means I won't be logging in or playing, which in turn, could cause me to "accidently" not re-subscribe next month.
Regards,
A displeased Customer.

i must agree with you there CCP (completely crap patches) is making me rage quit hard. ive had soooo many problems with this socket closed bug. the best part is it doesnt tell me it immediatly. the only way i can tell that my socket has been closed, and the eroor will come up within the next say 8 mins that i was disconnected, is to see how responsive my eve is. eg: if i can change line of flight unlock/lock a target damage messages are coming up npc's are reacting to me or not drones are being usefull
all in all, since the exspansion ive lost around 12 ships, all in different circumstances. in pvp as well as pve. favorite experience so far was being disconnected due to the socket, logging back in and my battle cruiser was blown up 15 minutes ago. on my end i had jumped like 5 times and was heading towards another gate on autopilot settings, when really a pvper kicked my ass, podded me, and it took me 15 mins to find that out.
cheers ccp.

I'm currently having this problem too since the beginning of 2009 when I played Eve again after a long period of pause. When I'm coming Online, with 1 or 2 accounts at the same time, I automaticaly logout of the game after a small period of inactivity. It can be 2 minutes as it can be 5 minutes ; but I always keep getting logout every day.
The only period I can stay online a bit more is when there's a lot of people around me ingame.
Living in France, I can only play in relatively good condition in the evening when in my french corp there's the highest number of people connected.
When I mine (I'm a proud miner), I open the windows that shows network informations (ctrl+alt+shift+m); and when I see that after 30 seconds I haven't sent or received packets I do something to show the game or the Internet or Idunnothef*ckinwhat that I AM HERE TRYING TO PLAY because if I'm afk more than a minute I'm logging out...
I can't even go to the TOILETS without being logout.
When it log me out most of the time I have NO MESSAGE : the game return to the "Enter your nick and password" screen. SOMETIMES... I got the "Socket closed" message, then I go to the same screen.
HELP º
I played every MMOs on the market since SWG, and it's the FIRST ONE where I encounter this kind of problem without being able to find a solution. (TEH F*CKING PROBLEM DO NOT COME FROM ME, MY COMPUTER OR MY INTERNET PROVIDER AND I AM F*CKING SURE OF THAT.)
I'm in France. I have a good Internet Connexion, a good ping, I can play first person shooter in optimal conditions. I have a recent computer, hardware is OK ! I tryed a lot of different pilots, exploitation systems and so on.
I INSTALLED PINGPLOTTER TOO
I'd really like to play Eve Online in good conditions Need a fix or something !

Guys, you have said all. There is a serious issue with the f****** socket connection in Apoc, I never had this problem with previous versions. I have tried everything at reach, changed port, fresh reinstall, LogServer, Pingplotter and bla bla bla but nothing works, sometimes I can connect and play for a while, sometimes after char selection EVE hangs or the f****** Socket Closed popup appears, all randomly. After Apoc EVE became almost unplayable and it getting worst with every patch. So CCP wake up and get to work on this issue !! Clients will no be anymore.

I have a tip for you all that encounter this issue.
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+m open a network windows, go on Network to see the packets sent and received.
You are loging out when you haven't sent or received packets between 1 or 3 minutes ; a good way to keep receiving packets (because you can't always be active by sending continuously packets) is to open new chat channels with a LOT of people in that are chatting. The channel "Help" is the good one. Open it then you'll can breath a bit more.

That's one of the things a GM suggested when I filed a petition.
Unfortunately after having that petition opened for so long without any usable solution, they closed it.
You don't just ignore subscribers CCP!
Anyway, I somewhat found a solution to my socket issues.. by assigning my internal IP to the DMZ. Within a couple days, had to do a full reinstall because my AV went nuts (no software firewall either)..
