As the subject says, what is the longest that you have gone without sleep willingly and for what purpose? Cat naps count as sleep, you must have been up for the entire duration. |

I remember when I was a lot younger and in high school, my friends and I would routinely play Rifts (with occasional Magic: The Gathering breaks) from Friday PM 'till it was time to head back to class on Monday.
I honestly have no idea how I did it. I believe it involved many cases of Mt. Dew and Surge. ---

A draft dodger, draft evader or draft resister, is a person who avoids ("dodges") or otherwise violates the conscription policies of the nation in which he or she is a citizen or resident, by leaving the country, going into hiding, attempting to fraudulently obtain conscientious objector status, or by open resistance (civil disobedience).
You could have also seen that by looking in a mirror.
PS 92 hours.

What Jim said is correct for the larger western nations today. And I did my time in the mili, not a "dodger".
If a catnap is a few minutes of shuteye, and that ends a period of "staying awake", I think my max is around 70 hours. Was when I left Canada, partied for a couple days straight, packed, then a 16 hour trip home, straight to meeting friends and family. Didn't catch any sleep on the plane(s), because I met this particularly interesting person on the first plane, and we kept each other awake the whole trip. Never saw her again though.
These days I sleep every night pretty much, but a bad week will see only about 25h of sleep.

Maybe 36 hours. At work. Also, in the middle of the 90s I used to work in three shifts for about a year, that sucked balls.
Longest I played a game was about 28 hours. BG2.
Honestly, unless you are in some danger (e.g. escaping a steady lava flow or something ), staying up so long is ineffective. Sleeping for a few hours will give you so much extra fitness that there's no reason not to catch a nap. It probably also can have an adverse effect on your health. |

Around 53 hours IIRC, but never going to do that ever again. At the end of those 53(?) hours I fell asleep standing up (more like, arms leaning on an open window in the train I was travelling with to get home) and woke up at the first stop. Took a nearly 20-hour sleep in my bed at home afterwards.
EDIT: that was "before coffee/smoking" days. Now I'm a heavy consumer of both nicotine and caffeine. 24 hours without sleeping, that's almost normal for me nowadays... I try not to get above 32-ish though.

Longest that I know. 65 hours on a LAN back in the '90s
The longest I suspect is about 4 days when I was in the military. During big exercises rear echelon troops who aren't designated drivers don't get much sleep. I'm not sure how long I was awake though because it's all a blur of moving stuff, setting up communications equipment, more moving stuff, guardduty, firewatchduty, even more moving stuff etc. I know that I didn't get more than 14 hours of sleep for the entire two week exercise (and 8 hours of that was in one go during the weekend when we were cycled out for 24 hours). Much because the rear command post was moved every 8 hours at least and it took 30 minutes getting it down, 15-30 minutes moving to a new location, 45 min getting it up (operating at full functionality) and then 3 hours to do non-essential crap because either the monitoring officers were *******s or because we were correcting the stuff that frontline troops did wrong because apparently setting up an encrypted frequencyflipping radiolink is too complex for the grunts. ...yes. Still a bit bitter ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

Wow I feel almost less than a gamer now that ive read how long some people have been up . The longest for me was about 28 hours for Halo 3 followed by a standard 8 hour rest. Tried to do it again when GOW2 came out last week though my father walked in around 5 am and had woken up on the wrong side of the bed, best thing for me to do then was just to say good night and sleep for 5 hours until he had gone to work. |

It was the better part of the 7th day, but i couldn't have managed to stay awake much longer. 8 days tops.
11 days seems really *really* hard.
Edit: And i have to say, even though it's nice to think back, it's an experience i only want to make once in my life and never again.

At 4 days you lose rational sense of feeling (Heat mainly, some people find themselves colder easier) which is bearable to a degree, you also as noted above have other effects that are fairly non-hazardous when you are not just sitting not eating or doing, well anything.
But when it gets to the 7/8 days barrier, you will be completely without energy, fresh air does nothing, showers have no effect, food is (or was for me) tasteless. By now people are either going into hospital or realising sleep is a really good idea right now.
2 days is nothing. 3/4days is a bad idea, a full week is heavily not reccomended |

I missed sleep the night before she was born due to playing COD2 from midnight till 9am the next day then just saying **** it to going back to sleep. I missed sleep the next night due to my gf's water breaking minutes after laying down to go to sleep. Then the two nights after she was born keeping watch to make sure she was breathing when she slept. (We had a friend whose baby apparently died of SIDS, made me kinda nervous and still does, I lose a lot of sleep waking up periodically to check her breathing.)
I slept for close to 24 hours after that, but for some reason if I sleep for anything longer than 9-10 hours I get a ridiculous headache, and that time was no exception. I'd do it again if for the same reason, as in my mind it was worth the heavy toll on both my physical and mental health. Otherwise I'd say "get ****ed"

When I was younger (and before I fell ill with my heart condition) I would purposely go without sleep one day every month. This re-sets your body clock just nicely and makes you more mentally aware. The most ive been without sleep is just 6 days (5 nights). Not as much as some but a bit more than others. I cant give you exact details but suffice to say it involved a party, girls and illegal substances. What can I say? I was young, I was immortal and the girls were just damn easy These days I get by on about 5-6 hours sleep daily.

Decided not to break the flow and kept working on it until first draft was done (about 6am). Had a lecture at 9am so I decided to just sty up.

Yeah, while I was at uni I would sometimes only go to afternoon lectures, and sometimes only to early morning lectures. Confused the lecturers no end. Only go to afternoon : Bed "late", sleep through entire morning Only go to morning : Realise that the sun's just risen and I haven't gone to bed yet. Go to early lecture, then to bed. I went nocturnal for a couple of days at one point too, sleeping through the day and being awake during the night. Gave that one up due to difficulties going shopping.

Now, if a human convinces themselves (lotsa computer nerds do, I am one too) if there is a reason to stay up, *check the forums one more time! set another watchlist in my rss feeder! check myspacefacebook once again!* the body will obey until shutdown happens, which is either lack of stimuli *nobody is posting...* or a biological function *fat boy cranked on pepsi cant hang with a warrior cranked on DESTROY*
In these cases it is easy to stay functional for upwards of 120+ hours, but the falloff becomes stupidly steep and basic function drops like you drank too much whiskey.
There are proven experiments where an individual can maintain indefinite capability with scheduled periodic micro-sleep. This pertained to the study of brain waves during sleep and the cycles in which they occur. most human beings have an average sleep cycle of 65-85 minutes to achieve REM sleep, which is proven to be most regenerative to the body.
If this exact cycle can be achieved one every so often, the body can function for multiple hours on one cycle of sleep, provided that it is guaranteed it's next cycle of rest.
This is a fact, as I and people I work with have functioned accurately over the course of 800 hours (about a month) can accomplish everything that is given to me and my team given we get our rest when the body needs a cycle. |

Went 2 nights w/o back in my time at uni. First night was an assignment, 2nd was out with friends, fell asleep late afternoon on day 3 and woke up evening the next day
I don't know if it is a sign of age, but while I could go a night without and sleep the night after (often do when travelling back from the US to the UK, can't sleep on the plane), I doubt I could go two now. I don't know how anyone here managed seven. Even after 3 days each minute must stretch and fatigue would be terrible, so to push 4 days beyond that point is super-human. I think if you're fit and healthy and are well rested when you first wake, you could probably go a lot longer than an unfit person. 'course caffeine must help -------------

I agree completely. I found that when I was doing my binge on Halo3 that if I stopped playing for awhile (stretch my legs and what not) I would very rapidly want to go sleep, however when I went back to playing the fatigue went away and became more aware of my surroundings. I would imagine that this is a survival mechanic from back when Man still had quite a few things hunting him and required action whe tired. |

Starting at 8:00 on friday, till 20:00 on sunday. Thats 60 hours straight. I was organising a lanparty for my friends that weekend, had 50 people together in an old office building.
after that I slept for 22 hours.

4 days, then the napping started (only like a mintue sleeping at a time). Total breakdown occured on day 6 or so
But the best sleep I ever got was: 12 hours awake -> 6 hour party -> 10 hours of biking over 200 km (was starting to get tired and thus slow) and then off to bed.
I think I never slept that well again.

I honestly don't know...never had a gaming binge or anything like that. I do regularly stay up for around 40-50 hours at a time when I'm working or on call at work, but its so fast paced I don't even realize that I've just worked 20+ hours until I go to take a break. I sit down at the picnic table outside and light a cigarette...its all over for me.

Somewhere around... 48 to 55 hours, I believe. Lanparties are bad for health (junkfood in all varieties, brandy in all varieties, gaming in all varieties).
I think what really made me want to break this 'record-attempt' was the fact that we were discussing games that were in the 'Subspace/Continuum'-genre. Some poor sap was explaining a weird game to me and I practically fell asleep while he was talking.

Edited by: Muad'' Dib on 20/11/2008 03:47:06 Was in '96-'97, i got my first PC game on my brand new P2 266MHz, it was Tycoon Transporter. I stayed for 72hs awake, listening to Manu Chao - was vey popular on Radio 21 back then. Ever since that episode, i still have this fixation with his songs. As soon as i hear them, i feel uplifted, and shortly afterwards very very tired. I had once a Uni exam, and realized i mixed the dates for the exams, leaving me just a week-end to study with the exam on Monday. It did not have the length of the TT episode but it had more intensity than that one, by Sunday evening i was laughing at anything. :)
Also, if anyone wants to go hallucinating, here's how you do it. Sleep has different stages, you interrupt the entry to deep sleep by setting your alarm clock to ring very loudly every 30minutes and you leep thinking about what you want to hallucinate about. Worst i've ever done is after 2-3hs think i was near a giant ship - sea-ship, that could fall and crush me and my world ! PS: Did a similar episode when I got X-COM 3 and JA2, but maybe 2-2.5 days, not 3 at all.

when i first got eve i was unemployed and deceided to catch up with my mates by trainign as many skills as i could quickly and do as much mining to get isk to buy my items, think over my first 2 weeks in space i was up for bout 60 hours at a time, slept for a few hours and then did same again.
last year i went out for A-levels results night i was awake the thursday mornign at 5.30 for work, went out, got in was up all night (y'know ) then went back to work to do another 14hour shift in different departments, and then went home to run lv4's on eve with my corp mates. hangover, lack of sleep and trying to interact with customers in a pretty big town centre store was really personally amusing for me since i could hardly string a sentence together by the end of my shift.
