Although i dont have a tempest yet. I am going to kit it for shield tanking 'cos A) You need the low slots to compensate for the Projectiles nerfed tracking (which also helps to deal damage) B) Last i checked it had 2nd best shields for any BS (though may have changed) even thou it has only 4 med slots.
If you go for shield tank then u can still deal suffient damage at the same time.
I have only thought about weapons. I would fit 4*1400mms 2*Duel-repeating (or simillar) 2*cruise launchers
Just my 2p :)

YUpo , shield tank for damage armour tank to win.. with the bonuses per level it's better that a level 5'er opts for armour and maybe a lower hitting char go for shield...

I think with the tempest it really depends on what you want to do/what else you want to fit.
For example, a close range PvP ship would probably want to fit scamblers/webbies, using up the mid-slots needed for a shield tank. The use of autocannons would also leave plenty of grid for armour tanking.
On the other hand, pack a few 1400s, and grid will fast become a problem. In this case a shield tank would probably give a more balanced fitting, leaving low slots for gyros, tracking enhancers and/or power diags (don't want too big a nerf to the shield tank from too many cap relays).
I say decide what you want to do with the ship, then fit the appropriate tank around it.

I'm having problems with not enough CPU for shield tanking and not enough free low slots (while maintaining a long range, high damage setup) for armor tanking. I'm currently working on my skills: energy grid upgrades lvl 5 + weapon upgrades lvl 5, to get enough grid (Rcu 2) and CPU for everything I need. Ask me in 3 weeks how it went .
Looks like it's the Tempest rather than the Typhoon that's more skill-intensive nowadays. That's the way it should be, I suppose. |

Tempest would be a shield tanker if the cpu was right, but it isnt. Armor tank seems the way to go. __________________________

Even with an x-large clarity ward etc cpu is a bit too tight ,i feel, for a proper shield tank on tempest(could do with loads of named shield boost amps and cruise launchers to start dropping to help that little extra).
On a long range set up (IIRC) you can fit 4x 1400mm's and 4x siege launchers and armor tank, using 1 large and one medium armor repairer and an RCU 2. This doeasnt leave much room for damage mods and offensively struggles a bit but can run both armor repairers on auto if mids are filled with cap rech 2's.
Close range armor tank is ok but the increased grid of siege launchers means it is not as good to set up as b4 recent changes and fitting 800mm's is a pain and i think it is better to use dual 650's now as they have been improved, or even dual 425's if you need extra grid to fit some heavy nosferatu's (although dual 425's chew through ammo which is important if you cant carry much cos you have 800 booster charges in cargo too).
Another problem is the lack of low slots cos Tempest does feel exposed if using armor defence with out a 1600mm plate imo cos of low base armor.
So Tempest is versatile, but this is it's downfall atm imo cos another ship can do what the tempest can do only better.

Here's what I use for pirate hunting... obviously not perfect at all, but then again, it's the beginning of an idea ;)
hi: 6*800m and 2 malkuth heavies med: 1 tracking computer, 1 Lif boosters, 3 cap rechargers low: Large armor repairer(s), some energized or hardeners and what not ;)
Simple, cheap, and fun :D

Edited by: Van Feneal on 08/07/2004 22:01:32 How many of you that have posted here even fly a tempest? I shield tank mine with no cpu problems. A few named items is all you need. I solo large battleship spawns in 0.0 easily. Unless you do or have flown one how can you offer an opinion?

Most NPC set ups don't run into fitting problems cos it's easier to fit...

Well, why don't you post your excellent setup then? If you mainly use it for NPC hunting, it's not like you need to keep it a secret. (And I do fly a Tempest fyi.) |

MAYBE : But i can you Add a heavy cap booster onto that. If not your shield tank isnt worth anything in PvP....
although im guessing the topic writer is just for NPC hunting you have to cover all aspects. "Teh lord of Nonni"

u guys are funny:), except my good buddy switch:)...
imo, shield tanking is good, armour tanking is better..
armour tanking gives u less options in lows, IE no warp stabs, very few damage mods.. and no cap rechargers..
So fit a full armour tank in low, heavy inj or cap rechargers in med along with WS, get the recharge tasty, fit close range guns, and get stuck in at 10K:)....
IMHO, u need the med slots for tracking, WS, boosters... and u cant possibly fit these while shield tanking in a 5 med slot BS.
for fleet damage at range, prob go for the 1400mm with shield, but to actually win fights in smaller engagments go armour and close with good cap recharge.
the problem with the tempest is that it isnt so obvious what its meant to do, as it has a 6/ 5/ 8 config, so i see the confusion.
remember armour tanking means no warp stabs, so some will need to grow a pair before fitting.
