Now that a number of Orca's are in circulation and use, it's time to start an Orca Thread on fitting ideas.
The obvious fit, I assume would be:
Hi: 2 Gang Mods - mining time and distance Tractor Beam
Med: Shield tank mods
Low: 2 Cargo Expander II
Rigs: 3 Cargo Op Rigs (I and/or II)
But what you currently flying? Any rad approaches out there?
Curious minds want to know...

2 Tractors, 1 mining speed command module Roid scanner, really sad shield tank Cargo expander II's no rigs currently, will probably do cargo rigs.

hm, 2 tractors? ... just askin' bud, but why you need 2 of them? with 70km range at 1km/s one is pretty much enough i'd say
already got an orca in corp, fielding it with range/cycle links and 1x tractor, a bit shield mods + roid scanner, cargo exp + cargo rigs.
having 22km range on your strip miners shouldnt be underestimated, except you have so many hulks in the belt that they'd overlap all the time. then 1x cycle link, 1x tractor and 1x salvager is a viable setup, too. |

I was thinking about a Damage Control II in one of the lows to give it some high sec gank survivability. It already has a good structural strength of 46,000 so 60% resists would certainly be handy. Plus the bonuses to armour & shield will help a little.
Then 1 Cargo Expander II and 3 cargo rigs, and you'll still have very good capacity. |

Orca has 2 really viable roles... depends where you are and in what fleet.
hi sec Mining platform, where a roaqual isnt viable its role is a mining command ship. Hi: 2 Gang Mods - mining time and distance Tractor Beam Med: Shield tank mods Probably use the Ore scanner Low: 2 Cargo Expander II Rigs: 3 Cargo Op Rigs (I and/or II)( between skills and rigs can get cargohold just over 100,000 m3 + the corp hanger 40,000 m3 not too shabby )
OR you have the low/null sec where the roarqual is the fleet boss making the Orca a very nice hauler.. Hi: 1-3 Tractor Beam as it no longer needs to use any command mods Med: Shield tank mods Potentially use the Ore scanner Low: 2 Cargo Expander II Rigs: 3 Cargo Op Rigs (I and/or II)
not much change, just viable and or practical.

Edited by: Tmarte on 20/11/2008 20:01:47 I was thinking, for high sec mining ops, forgo the tractor, and have the people dump it right into the corp hangar on the ship. That was you just have to drag and drop the ore from corp hangar into normal hangar. Of course the miners would have to be within 1.5k of the ship at all times to do this, but with a range of 22km on the lasers, should be viable for high sec.
[Highs] Distance Link Cycle Link Yield Link
[Mids] EM Amp Them Amp Invul Field Ore Scanner or Shield Booster [I think with a Gist MSB, it can perma run with perfect cap skills]
[Lows] Cargo Expander Cargo Expander
[Rigs] Cargo Optimizer Cargo Optimizer Cargo Optimizer
Fastest mining, and most space, still has good shield tank. Almost 90k cargo, 40k corp hangar. Should be able to support a decent mining fleet in high sec. |

Hi Slots - Laser Optimization Link - Field Enhancement Link - Tractor
Mid Slots - 3x T2 Large Shield Extender
Low Slots - 2x T2 Expanded Cargohold
Rigs - T1 Cargo - 2x T2 Cargo
I tried a T1 10MN AB in the mid but the speed difference isn't much. I'll find some other use for the open mid slot.
Only Corpmates can remove anything from the Corp Hangar. I don't know much about Alliance settings, but they can't without setting permission for the all of your corp hangars. That is, if you allow them to use hanger 1 on the Orca, they can use hangar 1 in a station or POS. That's my understanding anyway. But any "Fleet" member can place ore into the corp hangar once you check the setting. |

Edited by: Kessiaan on 21/11/2008 03:55:03 Well, I'm planning on using it as a combo mining command / hauler platform, as I normally dual-box mine solo with a Hulk / Mastodon combo.
New EFT isn't out yet and it'll take me four months to skill my alt into it, but here's the general fit I'm going toward.
HIGH: 2x Gang Links Small Tractor Beam
MID: 24km Point 3x Shield Tank Mods (some combo of LSEs and invuln fields, whatever fits and is cap stable)
LOW: 2x WCS II
DRONE: 10x Warrior II
Rigs will probably either be polycarbs (to improve align/warp times) or shield resistance rigs.
Big cargo bay isn't really a huge priority since it's base cargo is already more than will fit in my Mastodon and I have a real freighter for bulk hauling anyway.
Tractor for cans - I think I'll mine with it sitting about 10kms from my Hulk since I like to precisely position myself in the belts so I can mine them out without having to move more than one or two times, and I already have issues bumping myself using a Mastodon, I'm sure I'll need to leave some space with an Orca, so I'll just drop cans and tractor them in.
Survey scanner I prefer to leave on my Hulk (I use it to target rocks more than anything else since I like to keep my overview nice and tidy just in case I miss a WT in local somehow, or a canflipper comes along), along with the webber.
T2 stabs in case something goes horribly wrong without gimping my tractor beam into uselessness. (I don't stab my hulk though, the extra mining output from 2x T2 MLUs will pay for a new hulk after about 20 hours or so and I'm usually pretty good about the GTFO when a WT comes along)

The only reason I can see to fit a tractor beam on an orca is if you're mining in a gang with people not in your corporation.
If you are mining with people in your corporation then they can, and probably should, be dumping ore straight into your corp. hangar and in that situation a tractor beam is pretty useless. Of course the question of what to use the third high slot for would, I'm sure, be a big one, if you didn't put a tractor beam in it so I'd suggest just fitting a mining yield link, tractor beam, and a salvager so that while everyone's mining (and maybe you are too with drones) you can loot/salvage the wrecks that pile up as the op goes on.
Heck, who knows, you might get a commander spawn that drops T2 salvage. I was mining in a .5 system, had a commander/officer spawn, and got 30m in salvage. The ore I mined only amounted to 10-15m at that point. |

Shereza... love the sig.
Currently training Industrial Command lvl 5, once complete, I will go back to finish off Siege Warfare V then Siege Warfare Spec to lvl 4. This will take me about 14 days once I get through IC5. Then I will mount 3 gang mods in the hi-slots:
1. Laser Optimization; 2. Laser Field Enhancment; and 3. Shield Harmonizing or Active Shielding (will play with them to figure out what works best)

I dunno. Even with just my Hulk + Mastodon it's already bump city every time he makes a run back to the station (both coming *and* going).
Given that the Orca is much larger I was planning on having it sit 10kms away and just haul the cans over.

(assuming you have no hauler and use the orca for this purpose as well)
sitting in a belt with 1 orca and 5+ hulks, having the 5+ hulks each closer than 1500m to access the corp hangar. orca cargo full, orca navigates out of the hulk-blob, warps out.
dumps cargo, warps back in to its old spot - and due to the "warp precision" of 2500m around the warp-in-point, you're most likely to play a bit of hulk bowling
hulk going 5km/s in any direction? they won't like you |

Corp Hangar size of an Orca is 40000 m¦, right? So, how long does it take for 3-5 Hulks to fill that? 5 mins? If you can swap the ore from corp hangar to ship hangar in space then, ok, you gain another 10 minutes. But this is not what I would call a mining operation, if the commander has to dock every quarter hour to dump stuff (and bonuses get lost)?
So, either fit for ORE thief killing or maximum tank (for lowsec and 0.0). |

The Orca also has a 30k cargohold that can be scaled up to more than 90k and approach 100k if you use T2 rigs ($). You can move ore from the corp hanger to the ship's cargohold at any time thereby effectively yielding storage of more than 130k.
Right now I have Industrial Command trained to lvl 4 and have a combined storage of 129k (89k + 40k). I'll add another 5% with lvl 5 in a month. |

If I am not mistaken you can access the corp hanger array at 3k this would definatly give a little more maneauver room. If you are using this thing in High sec a nice passive tank should keep you out of trouble and you can max out your cargo.
Adding the third link of a different flavor might be a good thing.. if you are in an area where your miners need a little extra protection.
I have done some calculation that tell me with an orca and 3 mack's (level 4 pilots) it will take 40-45 minutes to fill the orca.. ideally you would wait for the cycle to start then warp back to station and be on the way back before the next cycle started to maintain bonuses.
If i have done my math correctly what you get is.
30k *1.20 (level 4 ICS)*1.27 (Exp Car II)*1.27(Exp Car II) *1.15 (CHO I) *1.15(CHO I) *1.15 (CHO I) = 88,308 + 40000 Corp Hanger = 128,303 cargo space.
Use T2 rigs and raise ICS to 5 and you can get another 15% or about 140k
Combine this with a decent leadership pilot and you will be increasing the shield, targeting range, speed, and armor of your mining fleet anyway.
My plan is this
ICE:
High:
Time Link Distance Link (farther away from teh field is better for maneauver) Tractor or Shield Harmonizing Link
Mids 3X Large Shield Extender II's Shield Recharger II or EM Passive Mod
Lows:
Cargo Expander II's (2)
Rigs:
Cargo Optimization Rigs (3) Probably T1, T2 are too expensive
Drones:
Mix of Lights and Medium T2 Drones
This in itself should handle belt rats.. and should handle a suicide attempt until big daddy concord shows up

Originally by: Andraine Or...here's a crazy idea. Someone uses a hauler too!
if you aren't too lazy, there are ways to improve this.
lazy mode: as andraine said, just use a viable hauler (itty V / impel / the like).
tricky mode: - have the orca staying where it is, doing its job (bonus + tractor) - when it gets close to be full, start purging the ore into jetcans - have one hulk leave the belt, fetch ANOTHER orca, collect cans + empty orca - get the miner back in his hulk
in the long term, this gets a few % more than having a single orca hauling each time its full (losing bonus), but obviously needs a second orca.
and if you feel safe enough, you can even let those 4 or 5 jetcans remain in space until the orca is full AGAIN. then have the miner switching from hulk to orca and double-haul jetcans and first orca.
if your pilots are smart enough and no lazy buggers, this works like a charm
(only makes sense if you field and spread 4+ hulks to eat a whole belt, no point in this if you're just cherry picking)

You are close but the actual number at ICS lvl 4 works out to 89,005.4 m3 - I am looking at my Orca now. Where you went slightly off is that the T2 Cargo Expanders gives a bonus of 27.5%; that's where you are slightly off.
ICS lvl 5 should give another 5% bonus and yield 93,455.67 m3 with the fitting you discribed. I'll confirm in exactly 31 days, 12 hours, 9 minutes and 18 seconds exactly...

Well, after playing with the new EFT, here's the preliminary fit I came up with as a general purpose hauler replacement for my dual-boxed solo mining ops.
Orca, Hauler Replacement
HIGH: Laser Optimization Link Mining Laser Field Enhancement Link Small Tractor Beam
MID: Invuln Field II Stasis Webifier II Warp Disruptor II ECM - Multispectral Jammer II
LOW: 2x Warp Core Stabilizer II
DRONE: 10x Warrior II
RIG: 3x Cargohold Optimization I
Even with the self-nerf from the WCS it can still tractor cans from 30kms away, has a more than adequate basic tank for highsec stuff which allows me to load up on plenty of e-war for canflippers, a 2nd web on the Hulk should ensure any frig-class flipper meets a swift doom (and then I get a free 15 minute break in station afterwork). Cargo rigs since there really isn't anything else worth putting on it, even without lowslot cargo mods it still gets an impressive 57K cargo space, rougly twice my current hauler.

I tried a "speed tank" fit on an orca on Singularity. It'd pull about 300-350m/s or so at which point I gave it up as bad call.
As for its tank... Heh, the orca's surprisingly resilient. A corp. mate of mine wanted to test out his curse and asked me to bring along something suitable and wanted to see an orca, so I packed a sacrilege into the orca and set off for low/no-sec.
Soon as I warp to him he starts attacking me...
After awhile of that he has to give it up as a bad call because I keep killing his drones with mine, hitting the fresh ones with vampires, and getting barely enough cap to combine with native regen to keep the T2 large booster running enough to not die.
Yeah, needless to say, solo recon ships against the orca is probably not a good idea, at least not if you're not terribly good with using them. ____________________

Edited by: Krylon Rhae on 25/11/2008 10:52:00 Falling in love with this ship...
Finished off a mission the other day and there were a lot of roids between 57km to 109km away from the warp-in point. Decided to test the Orca on this and collected my mining gang - 2 hulksters, Iteron V and the Orca.
In the past this would have been a royal pain slow-boating the Iteron over to the hulks and would have taken a pass on mining the roids. But with the Orca parked some 65km from the hulks and only 10km from the warp-in point, my Iteron was able to glide up to the Orca, load up and fly away. I got a nice rhythm going so the cans were tractored into the Orca and the Iteron was able to simply load and go with little wasted time.
Now I have an extra 11-m trit in my coffers for an hour's work.
Love this ship... full stop.

My Orca will exit the factory during the weekend, so I played around in EFT for a while to get an idea how to set one up.
First part, hauling and gang boosting, was easy. Laser Optimization link, a tractor beam and an improved cloak into high slots, cargo expanders into lows, some cargohold optimization rigs and voila. Now to fitting a tank of a sort.
The first thing I did was fit an x-large shield booster since I was easily able to perma run it in Singularity even with my lowish shield skills. I turned my head right to see the stats and what I saw was utmost depressing.
What the hell did you do to it's capacitor?!?
It can't even use a medium shield boosted dual hardener setup without running dry. Is it supposed to use passive hardeners and a boost amplifier? Perhaps deadspace gear?
When I hear the expression "mini capital" I imagine something big and massive with the tank matching a battleship at least. While requirements one and two are filled nicely it has trouble with the third one. Why on earth give a ship so much powergrid when it is completely unable to do something with it? Two low and four mid slots don't give much room for versatility.
Sorry, I must be living in teletubbieland again. I guess it'll still do it's main job pretty nicely, even for a ship that costs half a billion ISK. --

Yeah, the cap is tough to sustain. I tried many fits (don't use EFT) the old fashion way, trial and error. I also started out with a large booster and 2 hardeners and couldn't sustain the cap while also running the gang mods. Finally setted for what I posted on the first page...

This will work and the resists aren't bad but would have expected to be able to put in a more robust tank on what CCP is calling a subcapital.
Does anyone else have a permarun solution or passive tank solution?

The Orca has an amazingly low recharge time on shields. Buffer tank on this makes easily over 200 DPS tanked without any sweat at all.

Just curious about the orca / hauler conundrum. Could you not keep a hauler like an itty in the orca and have one of the barges jump into when the orca starts to get full and need emptying, then jump back in the barge when done?
I imagine it will all depend on how quickly your filling up the orca vs how quickly the hauler can empty it but might it work with smaller gangs and have a dedicated hauler with larger gangs.
I'm a way off being able to fly one of these and don't have any experience with cap ships so I don't know how feasable this is.

Depending on the number of miners feeding the hulk this is certainly a way to go. I usually have 2 hulksters, Iteron V and Orca in system. My Iteron V pilot is cross training to fly the hauler since he is also my hauler/trader. So the extra capacity for trading will be welcomed when the Freighter is over-kill.
In any event, once he can fly the Orca I will get him into a Covetor for the extra mining boost then do what you suggested, swap him in and out of the Iteron/Covetor.

That isn't too bad at all, considering trying to run an active tank...

Might try that fit. I guess as an alternative you could try 1 invul and 1 Mag Shield Amp to strengthen the EM.

1x Medium Shield Booster II 2x Dread Guristas Magnetic Scattering Amplifier 1x Dread Guristas Heat Dissipation Amplifier ( change resistance amplifiers to match your local rats )
Fills many important objectives. - Tanks all the local spawns - Very low skill requirements - Not very capacitor intensive - Rather cheap ( 50 million ISK at most )
You can never know who will be tank / gang booster during the operation and what skills they have --

I guess that the 4x Rat Specific Hardener, supported by 3x core defence field purger setup will be useless. It was able to run perma with 2x gang links and tank around 400-500DPS. Glad i made this setup in EFT only and don't have the orca rigged yet.

Bear in mind the Hulk's passive shield regen goes from the current 900s to 2100s on the 27th, killing it's shield tanking viability.
Put a DCII in and (why bother) some hull reppers in mid.

This works quite well for high-Sec Fleet mining Ops:
Highs: 2x Gang Links - Distance and Cycle 1x Small Tractor Beam
Mids: 1x - Roid Scanner 1x Large Shield Booster II 2x Large Shield Extender II
Lows: 2x Cargohold Expander II
Rigs: 3x Cargohold Optimization I
Drones: 5x Hammerhead II 5x Hobgoblin II
This gives me 77880m3 in the cargohold plus the 40000m3 of the corp hangar.

On my Orca, I use the mining cycle time mod, a tractor, and a shield harmonizing mod in the highs. This gives me a little more tank without using a mid slot.
It will be making a trip to 0.0 to help ice mining before long. When that happens, I'll remove the shield mod, and replace it with a cloaker.

That is, if you allow them to use hanger 1 on the Orca, they can use hangar 1 in a station or POS. That's my understanding anyway. But any "Fleet" member can place ore into the corp hangar once you check the setting.
How can you set up a corp hangar section to be accessed by alliance members? ----------- MOP recruiting Industrialists/miners/traders/missioners/etc |

Mining drones stop mining when the roid pops so you will need to constantly monitor and retarget.

Given the apparent cap issues involved with larger boosters, wouldn't Pithi B-Types be the way to go on this one? At least from the cap efficiency standpoint. They're also relatively cheap when compared to the ship.

5 Massive roids had 5 little drones. Each was a mining drone 2. Gaily they mined each summer's day Industrialists all of course One little chap then had a mishap Popped his massive roid Wept for his veld then cried with joy As his young minemate said
Did you think I would leave you crying When there's room on my roid for two Climb up here miner and don't be crying We can mine just as long with two When we grow up we'll both be industrialists And our roids will not be veldspar And I wonder if we'll remember When we were two little drones.

Pretty decent tank, actually. Powers through at least a few battleships for quite some time. With over 200k EHP, you can bet that it can hold off long enough and attempt to keep one aggressor locked down!
If it manages through some wonder to take out a target, there is easy of tractoring and salvaging for maximum isk-making potential. |

After waiting for the price to drop i've purchased the new orca, and wound up with simular set-up that have been posted. The only thing that still is unsure is the mid slots, obviuosly shield tank but will it be active or buffer passive? keeping in mind that i reserved 1 mid slot for a scanner. I guess we'll wait untill the update from EFT to answer that. User tip: equip a hulk with a web to turn this pig around!

The change has been in effect for a month now, actually. (QR 1.0.2 patch.) I don't believe EFT has been updated to reflect the change yet though. But see this post about getting an updated Ships.dat file with the change.
Though I can't vouch for that updated Ships.dat since I patched my own file myself using Tonto Auri's instructions. But someone later in the thread did.
