As people keep asking, i thought i would post this. some people seem to have odd ideas on how its done, and what you need in order to do it. So heres the Email Critical Mass enterprises got in beta when we won a station building platform, note.. the actual platform NOT the BP to make platforms!
Email follows:
--------------------------------------------- Congratulations! You are now the proud owners of a space station, the first players to operate their own station in the history of EVE. The station construction platform has been manufactured in your corporation headquarters hangar.
Here's how you use construction platforms:
1. Right click on the platform and assemble it (can only be assembled in station). Set passwords on it for both access and building.
2. Drag it to your cargo then undock.
3. Warp to a planet in the system, when you get there your radar should be empty, if there are stargates, stations or other construction platforms within 100km, you will not be able to launch the platform. If you cannot launch a platform, then warp somewhere suitable.
4. Open your cargo hold and right click on the platform and launch it.
5. Try and build the platform. It will fail and tell you how many of each type of mineral you need for it to build.
6. Open the platform using the password you set and move the required minerals in.
7. Try and build the platform. The platform is removed and the station is placed in that position in space.
Thank you for participating in the Station Lottery and have fun with your new station.
We hope this email goes some way to clear up any confusion regarding this issue and hope you have no further problems setting up your station.
Please don't hesitate to contact us again. We'll do all we can to help.
Best regards, The EVE Online Customer Support Team ----------------------------------------------

Now we just need to wait for stations to be put on the market and away we go :).
I am extremely surprised by how few minerals were required to built it, i hope that was to make things extremely simple for the beta and that it actually takes 100's of times more minerals to build one in game. Main Everlasting Vendetta Veteran Member of the Stain Alliance |

pann said they would be very very expensive, which suggests they are on sale, either the BP's or the platforms themselves.
Also in a dev chat I think Campion said they would be on sale in far out regions in ship yard stations and similar kinds of stations to that.
Both of those things suggests they are on sale not loot.

Its probably worth pointing out at this point that the reason I think they are loot is that some players have posted saying they have found a platform (as opposed to bought one).
Having said that it seems very odd that the biggest hi-tech item can only be found in 1-in-a-million backwater systems. I know they want to keep player stations rare but it doesnt really fit the continuity does it?

I thought you got a blueprint, assembled the construction platform where you want it and then drag and drop minerals onto it to build it...as in what tristan said in the first post. Main Everlasting Vendetta Veteran Member of the Stain Alliance |

And the best way to keep them rare is to make them 1.5billion credits for the blueprint and take 20000megacyte to build, etc. Main Everlasting Vendetta Veteran Member of the Stain Alliance |

It was stated by the devs in one of the post-retail dev chats (the second to last?) that at the time construction platforms were 'in game' but that constructing a station would have taken every single player currently in EVE a solid week or more worth of mining to finish.
However, given that at the time they were saying Reverse Engineering was 'in game', which later turned out to mean that the code was in place but none of the skills and such to let players actually do it were in yet. I suspect construction platforms are 'in game' in much the same way.
The latest mentioned that construction platforms and all they entail (depots, mobile refineries, player owned stations, sentry guns, repair platforms, etc) were almost finished and would be active in 2-3 weeks. If all remains on schedule we should be seeing them in a week or two now.
I suspect that those who claim to have found platforms in game already are a) lying, possibly trying to lure players into some kind of trap, b) confused, and have actually found abandoned stations or other points of interest, or possibly c) in posession of a non-operational platform dropped as loot by something that won't start working until the devs make it available.
I don't believe they're available on the market in remote stations, because to the best of my knowledge unchecking 'show only active items' will show you *all* items that are theoretically available on the market *anywhere*. I've checked stations in Empire, Archangel, and Sancha space, and seen no trace of such a thing in any of them.

It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

Just as an aside, is the Station Construction skill (prerequisites Industry and Mechanic level 5) redundant in release?
Also station building in a remote area is a no-go without mobile refining (and maybe mobile factories for ammo production etc as well with the more unscrupulous elements that pervade Eve trying to throw a spanner in the works), so do we assume that these skills and related facilities will be available as and when the platforms themselves become available? We at STK scientific also aquired one of the station in BETA. When we got the news we mined our asses of with ark and such. Then when we got it we didnt need any of it :P. So we sold it all and made good cash.
Anyway here's some pics of our finished station.

Maybe someone who got it in the beta could explain this, how does building a station work?
Do you buy the blueprint, build the constuction platform using a factory slot, load it onto an industrial and then launch it where you want to build the station and then start dragging and dropping minerals onto the platform to build it up?
Or do you need to find one of these construction platforms in game to actually build one? Main Everlasting Vendetta Veteran Member of the Stain Alliance |

The egg is the station building platform, what you "launch" (jetison) from the cargo hold of an indy. if i remember rightly it took about 1200 units of cargo space up.
once you fly the indy to where you want to build the station, you launch the platform then you fill it (the egg) up with minerals by draggins and dropping the minerals from your cargo hold to the platforms hold, which you access by right clicking on it and typing in the "access" password. once its got the right amount of minerals in the you access it again and then type the build password in, and hit the build button.... it turns into a station. Shame it didnt slowly build or unflod or anything, it would have been good to watch that. but the station just popped on screen all at once.
ours looked like the brutor tribe bureu type stations.

few more questions... :)
Do you get to choose what the station looks like? or is it completely random?
What services did you have in there?
Could you expand the services?
What are the station management functions like?

i took screenies of the station control UI. but unfortunately i seem to have deleted them. ill have a look see if by some chance i managed to keep them.
we couldnt choose what the station looked like no.
we couldnt pick the services either, BUT i think you will be able to in retail.
the station manager UI didnt look quite finished, but one nice feature was the ability to set the number of lab and factory slots. restrict who could rent them etc.
the modifiers for station prices such as docking and refining where stupid. it was pretty complicated and needed changing, i hope retail stations are easier to set that lot up. EG: i set the docking fee modifier to 0.0001 and tried to dock in my (then) Exequror and it wanted about a million isk. docking fee is charged for volume of the ship, and a standing modifier. there was no way to set the standing of your own corp at the time.
like.. i should be able to set a docking fee but anyone in my own corp can dock for free, and allies too etc. but as i said that stuff wasnt in game proper then, so hopefully it will be sorted now.

Thanks Tristan... Yes, docking fee's should be alterable by player, corp, general and faction standings... that would be nice. ---------------- ~= Askari =~

When we set our up we did experimental service charges and you can charge people a certain amount of isk per crago load to dock.
We locked one guy out when he had to pay 800K to dock at the station :P
All repairs go to the corp.
All refining "we take" goes to the corp
We found give your own corp members +20 rating and you can effectivly adjust it to be free for corp members and costly for others.

It would make sense, that the look, available services and trade goods market would depent on the type of platform you get. I imagine that a fully equpied sci/ind station would be harder to obtain/build than a basic trading post.
