How can one compare a 5+ year old MMORP with something that has yet to be released? Answer: you cannot.

JGE won't compete with EVE. JGE is aimed for a different market entirely. JGE, based on the developer interviews earlier this year, they are PvE focused and there will only be PvP in instances.
That is quite different from EVE. Thus, JGE is no threat to EVE. EVE is also more strategic compared to JGE. JGE will be interesting to console and FPS players. Not EVE players who thrive with complexity.
Even if JGE wasn't set for launch any time in the future, Tech 3 would still be put out next year, most likely.

Unless you absolutely must have instanced PvP and fly around using your joystick, JGE doesn't look it will threaten the EVE crowd

Posting in a Jumpgate: Evolution thread.
I think it might appeal to the mission-running carebearing folk, but other than the fact that it's in space it seems to have very little resemblance to Eve. Eve really is in its own category when it comes to MMOs.
And for the record, I still think they'll have lag issues - FPS-style twitch games are very, very, very intolerant of even the slightest bit of lag. ---

Eve does not turn over that much money comparing to other MMO's out there, probably one of the lowest profitable MMo's.

Was exited when I first saw this game a while ago. But has everything I dont like in MMo's... sharded servers, controlled instance pvp... a set storyline/leveling, no room for player individuality/independance. Jumpgate Evolution will never produce a Chribba, or a CSM, or pirates who hold down your ship and demand money and then blow you up anyway, player controlled space/empires... EVE is everything that JE is/will not be. I guess we'll see. ___________________________________________

Eve doesnt charge for it's expansions and they have a large number of employes working on the game. Most MMORPG's create the game and then let a smaller crew maintain it while the majority of the employes either work on expansions or a sequel. Guess the devs in eve work at expansions as well but the expansions feel more like major updates, Still, compared to ie Guild Wars or Archlords (no monthly fee's) Eve makes a bunch of money. I don't belive Eve makes less money then a comparable sized MMORPG tho, they just spend more on Dev's/servers. Comparing to the money grubbing Blizzard is no point really (pay for battlenet, no thnx). oh and btw, i collect badgers... |

Edited by: oilio on 24/11/2008 12:35:30 If it has lots of fighting - and fights that are easy to get into, then I'll definitely be playing it.
I was very excited about Faction Warfare in Eve. FW was going to allow lots of fighting without the stupid alliance politics of 0.0, and fights were going to be easy to find.
As usual, CCP released a half-baked idea and FW is now almost completely dead.
I like the idea of actually being able to pilot the ships in JG Evolution - maybe fights will be determined more by piloting skill than "get lots of skillpoints, click orbit and press F1".
Jumpgate Evolution might be completely rubbish, of course, but I'll certainly be giving it a try. Eve online is fairly rubbish these days too, so Jumpgate doesn't need to be perfect in order to compete.
Eve will still be there for those who enjoy the alliance politics and stuff, but for people who just want to get into lots of space battles, Jumpgate might be better.
In the meantime I'll be trying Warhammer. My subscriptions to Eve run out in December, but I rarely feel inclined to play these days anyway.
As for the "free expansions" stuff that people often quote about Eve... well, Eve costs more than most MMOs, and because of the skill mechanism and the fact that only one character can be trained per account, most people have more than one account. As such, the "expansions" are free, but the overall game cost is higher... plus the "expansions" are often no more than patches. Could you really call QR an expansion? |

I've seen this type of thing before. Right now Eve is the only space mmo on the market so there is a big pve crowd playing a pvp game because there's nothing else close. The PvP crowd mistakes this as an acknowledgement that everything in eve is perfect as it is.
I predict an exodus.
I'm not saying all PvP is bad but rather that some ppl have their arrogant heads real far up some place where the sun doesnt shine.

It's incredibly obtuse to think that JGE won't compete with EVE, as EVE itself snagged away a bunch of players from the original Jumpgate. Lets face it, the vast majority of EVE players love internet spaceships no matter what, so it's at least partially in the same market, and I can see a lot of former Jumpgate fans wandering over in that direction to at least try out the new one.
Personally, if I wanted twitch space stuffs, I'd reinstall Freelancer or boot up Freespace 2. Or go play around in Faction Warfare. :)

Ugh, the first Jumpgate was a complete failure... I suspect JGE will be too. You simply can't do twitch-based gaming on such a massive scale reliably yet.

How massive a scale are we talking about here? Planetside did twitch/FPS gaming reasonably well on a 500-players-per map scale.

I imagine they'll steal a bunch of subs. "Twitch combat" is a feature that outweighs a lot of other considerations for many people. I'll probably try it, but doubt I'll stay for years as in Eve.
