Is solo piracy in low sec possible in cruisers/frigs atm? I havent really played in over a year and everytime i went out to pvp the thing i see now is group or bait with a group waiting.

It takes patience and some luck, but ultiamtely, yes. Solo piracy is indeed possible if you are only flying frigates and cruisers. Stay away from heavily populated systems (obviously). Be prepared to roam a lot for targets.
Low-sec systems that border high-sec can be good choices for hunting, especially if people run missions nearby. Some of the braver types will aceept missions into low-sec space; they can be scanned down and jumped. The nice part here is that they are at a severe disadvantage - they will be PvE fit, and will already be taking damage from mission rats. You likely will need two ships in system if you are doing this - one for scanning and one for killing. The expanded probe launcher can gimp your fitting.
Faction Warfare systems will sometimes have solo plexers. Systems that include low-level static plexes can also attract people. And of course, low-sec ratters and miners can be found but these days too many people dock up as soon as anyone enters system.
Something that I have not tried that may be worthwhile is to scan down exploration sites, cloak up, wait for someone to enter, and engage when they're busy with other things. Has anyone tried this with any amount of success?
Does anyone else have tips and tricks for finding targets when solo? Maybe Skira can include them in her guide.

Actually, I am more inclined to switch over to a T1 frigate or cruiser precisely when going to a heavily populated system. In a lower-paced system, I fear less for my T2 ships.

This is where the wonderful "POWER OF TWO" offer from CCP can come in handy, that or you just attempt to switch ships after getting a warpable probe hit.

A really nice thing is that some ships can be fit to be an 'all in one' package deal - though I'm not really sure that it is for "beginning piracy" since this guide deals with T1 frigates. Might be worth a mention, though.
Battle cruisers are good for this since they have a utility high anyways, or some recons (I have an expanded probe launcher Pilgrim, <3), etc. You lose a slot which could be used for a neut or something, but it does allow you to find more targets. That's always a bonus. The surprise factor alone can be worth it, since people in safe spots are often doing something else (or may even be AFK!).
"My Safe Spot is Safe."Probes Fired. Wait. Target Found."Surprise! How are you?"

Thank you Skira for this guide. After missioning and mining in hisec for 7ish weeks and finding them a less than exciting pay to play experience, I was ready to give this game away.
The guide inspired me to head to lo sec in a Rifter and unleash hell in a brand new character. Ive had more hell unleashed on me than the other way around, but Ive had plenty of fights in the last week, have won a few, lost most.
Ive learned how to scan, how to use safespots, and how to play with fits. I was always wary of lo sec as I had been podded a couple of times as a noob, and the forums always seemed to say it was a deathtrap and free of reasonable unblobbed fights. Ive found this not to be the case and have been able to use Local to my advantage, and pick my fights. I gave my new character a starting seed of 5 mill so i didnt have to mission, and he has been self sufficient since, living off ransoms, loot and lols.
Ive met some other pirates, and had several whales of fun. More importantly, ive been actually interacting with the other denizens of New Eden, instead of grinding NPC missions.
My next ransom is coming your way, thanks again.

Yeah it keeps falling to the second page, do the Bug Hunters deal with forums because there's defiantly an issue with this post's sticky?

You would think a company with as much income as CCP would be able to afford proper forum software so that important threads don't keep dropping onto the second page. ==========

I'm not very familiar with ASP, but I would be willing to learn enough to look into this issue pro bono so that CCP can have better forum software.

What is the worst assault frigate for piracy?
I vote for the Retribution, since it has only one mid slot. Your choice: Speed, Tackle, or Cap Boosting, you only get one!

Hawk is much worse. Piracy requires actually doing enough damage to get your opponent below 99% shield HP to convince them to give up the ransom money. Since the Hawk with is roflkets is not able to do this, the Hawk is by far the most useless. At least with a Retribution, you might be able to bluff it and make them think they're scrambled when they really aren't.
Also, this needs to be back on the first page. -----------

You know what's really hilarious? Ignore the blaster dps, and that Hawk gets out-ganked by a Kestrel:

On the subject of piracy: I would love to fight that Hawk. Please buy it and bring it to a convenient lowsec system so I can test how awesome it is in PvP. -----------

This was indeed a nice guide, I read it the first time I got into PVP!
Before I read it I had met a few failed attempts (not due to ship fit, but more to not knowing the meta game and about scanning etc). Like loosing my Moa to a nano Vage and a Myrm.
Then I got hold of the guide, I got into a Rifter, and went out to blow **** up. Now with the knowledge of scanning and some other mechanincs.
To my supprise, I met a lot of success, and yes, in some low secs there is tons of noobs and other would-be-pirates that got no clue. But in a T1 frig you are limited to what you can engage if you do not have a lot of experience.
Here is ony of my most fun kills from the start of my PVP days:
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=5557298
We engage a Navy Vexor at a planet along with another ship that we blew up, the Vexor kills my two mates, but my Rifter he can not hit. And for some reason he persist in trying to kill it with Ogre IIs .
After I had broken his tank my mate came back and stole my final blow . This was the passive shield tanked rifter I belive from the guide. Not really that good a ship, but as a noob ship it worked well since you had more tank. I eventually moved on to nano rifters and now I fly other bigger ships (and Rail Harpy among others). But still good times to be had in a Rifter.
However, a Rifter will die easily enough to competent PVPers, so its not an iWin button, just a pretty damn strong frigate for a T1. Used right, with enough boldness, you will have fun in one tho!
But I agree with Merin, I find Hawks very lacking. After trying to make a fit for it I come out with a Harpy every time .

So, remind me again just what guides you have contributed to EVE? What have you done to justify the storage space used by your pathetic excuse for a character? What makes you think you deserve the honor of posting in a thread that is far more productive than anything you have done, or ever will do?
Yeah, that's what I thought. The unsubscribe button is waiting, go introduce yourself to it. -----------
