Hey, I haven't been around for very long. I've been looking at the price history data on several ores and have noticed that the prices have gone through incredible swings in the last 90 days. Average price of Tritanium seems to have increased by about 75% in 90 days, Megacyte has dropped by about 40% in 90 days, etc. I heard that the Tritanium swing is a result of changes in the ability to raise cheap ore through shuttle reprocessing, but what is causing the changes in the other ores and how permanent should we expect the changes to be?
If anyone knows, I'm really curious. Thanks!

Hey, CCP
You remember how you like to tout the market aspects of EVE. Well, you've only really got 2 things you can directly point to. Your economists who's still seriously behind and MD which is withering in its new position. So, the way I see it you can either try to get him to crank it up a notch or just move MD back. Which sounds easier?

I for one welcome our new tritanium overlords.
Eh,, personally it's just the mineral basket effect in my mind. To simplify things heavily, if there's too much trit and not enough megacyte for people's demands, mega prices will go up (scarce resource) while trit prices go down (over-saturation of the market). Conversely if trit is the scarce resource and mega is over saturated, trit goes up while mega goes down.
obviously with more than just two minerals it's more complicated than that.
The reprocessing of NPC goods meant trit had a hard-limit in price (for sensible people).
Now that that's being removed we're seeing the effects of the basket, which is showing the over-saturation of high-ends on the market while low-ends bolster up in price due to demand.
With the mineral basket in mind, the only way CCP will ever make risk-vs-reward (ugh, i feel dirty now) match in terms of a mining career in high sec vs low sec vs null sec, they need to introduce a mechanic (whether it nerfs highsec mining or not) which simply makes mining ore A in lowsec/0.0 sec more profitable than mining it in high sec. They'll never be able to make, say, Jaspet/Hedbergite more valuable than Veldspar if the mineral market says so.
I.e. Mining Veldspar is bettar than mining Jaspet. Jaspet is a low-sec only ore. Veldspar is ubiquitous. But who cares. What *should* be the case is that mining veldspar in low/0.0 sec is worth more than mining veldspar in high sec.
Whether this is by incurring tax/fees/something to make mining in high-sec more expensive, or whether it's by introducing things like blast-crystals which are illegal to use in high sec (concord response for using them even) but dramatically increase your yield (extra 50% say) and depletes asteroids inefficiently,, it'd be a win-win. More targets coming to low sec for pirates, more reward for bears going to low/0.0 sec (they're halfway there with the Blockade Runner covert ops cloak changes)

It depends on the size of the crank they plan to use, but I would guess moving us back to the bottom. --

Prices on Tritanium have gone up for two main reasons. The Orca construction boom, and replacement of large capship losses by 0.0 residents recently.
The changes to pricing on other minerals is likely due to the fact that cap ship construction parts are very low mineral intensive, and people that normally build other things are now building said cap ship parts.
So with so many low minerals and manufacturers being concentrated in the cap ship component market, the usage of high minerals is actually slumping a bit, driving prices down.
As the orca rush ends and the 0.0 capship fleets rebuild, the imbalance should correct itself to some degree. This might all repeat itself if we have another series of huge cap ship losses. Then again, when there is an orca or two in every major mining corp, the mineral supply will be a little more robust too.
*shrug* too many variables to give precise answers, but I suspect trit to fall and zyd and mega to go up a bit soon.

Basically in it's new top-of-the-page position, the great unwashed are seeing it more and asking, well, stupid questions.

They are not stupid questions. They are basic game play questions, and that's all part of being a game play forum. This forum is for all forms of market questions and discussion, and that includes simple questions and question from new players about basic issues.

It use to be at the bottom of the list, tucked away among some rarely used forums. Generally, people only found it if they were looking for it. Hence, generally, only people who had something meaningful to discuss stopped in.
Now that we're nice and prominently listed lots of people notice it and stop in because they have nothing better to do. Basically we get the spill-over from general discussion which is not what we want or need.
In all honesty, we had more than enough pointless and "noob seaking the answer to life" threads before they moved us. But, they're picking up since we moved and that's liable to continue.
A lot of business gets conducted here. 100's of billions annually gets thrown into bonds/shares/banks here and a number of our threads about features and such have attracted dev comments and even been implemented. We have a candidate for CSM and he just got elected to a second term. This forum isn't just ****ing into the breeze like general discussion and we'd like to to keep it that way and if CCP actually thinks about it, I suspect they do too. Unfortunately having every bored baboon poking their head in and leaving some random comment, or worse, thread, does just that.

Yes, they are.
Ignorance may excuse them in some circles but quite a few are in fact dumb questions.

So is there a more appropriate place for a question like mine other than here? I just assumed that since it was a question involving the market, it would fall under "Market Discussion."

I don't know what was up with that. There was a big spurt of "OMG! game time cards cost too much! BOYCOTT!" and then they just disappeared. Maybe it was one concerted attempt to manipulate them?

Yes and no.
Yes, it kind of falls under MD forum. No, it doesn't fall under MD forum because if you've done your research, trit price shot up because of Orca. Not gonna say anything more until you've done your research.
Yes, I like to say research, because after all, market warfare is all about doing enough research to outwit your opponent.

Edited by: Waseem on 30/11/2008 05:50:07 I believe this question is better asked in the Industry forum as someone there will actually take the time to point out how the mineral basket works. Minerals, which yes are a commodity, are mostly "used" inside of industry. Reading the industry forum is a great place to start along with the sell order forums.
Since you used the term ore to define both ore and minerals(which are not the same) one can assume you do not have a great deal of knowledge yet on the subject. I also recommend using eve-search it will save you the headache of asking questions that have been answered more then once in the last 60-90 days.
I am by no means an expert on any topic mentioned here, but if you spend an hour or so going through forums and using eve-search without an answer, then you will want to at least phrase your question with what you have found, and what specifically you want to know.

Sorry, you haven't realized this yet but Market Discussion is not like other forum. The game spills into MD forum unlike other forum; believe it or not, PvP exist in this forum, and if you're not adapted for it, then you're not cut out for it. Just like I'm not cut out for PvP warfare in 0.0 space (yet).

I accept that answer as it is true pvp does occur in this forum, just as it does in CAOD as propaganda. However people need to adapt. This forum is part of the game play umbrella now and this is where new players are directed to go with all market questions.

Just how COAD can be harsh, so is MD. You only learn that one way.
That said, I'm not saying this should be in here or not, just that's the reality here.
It's the same principle why people get laughed off when they say "I got killed in low sec while running a mission, this seems hardly fair!"

If you ask a market question in GD it is moved here, if you ask a corp or alliance question in GD it is moved to caod. Harsh or not this is still the proper place for all market questions and no amount of whining to hide MD in high sec forum space is going to change that.

well let me help you out.
The MD forum is generally an unwelcoming and unfriendly place. I would advise not just jumping in and asking ANY question. You can use the tools of the forum and search for your topics, or browse through the pages and read some posts.
Many experienced players come here to raise capital, exchange ideas, develop market tools among other things.
You will create nothing but surliness from most players when people enter and ask for the "I win button" without experiencing or researching the game themselves.
The number of players who try to raise cash with the "I have just started but I need 7B ISK" is getting annoying.
Go out and enjoy starting an empire, grow your company from scratch, mine your first asteroid in an ibis, kill your first victim.
Don't come looking for freebies because you won't get em!

Now I know you're being argumentative and stupid because you clearly didn't follow my link and realise I linked to the new player forum, *not* GD.

You have to understand that trade/industry seems to be a innocent part of the game, it's not; It's cutthroat. Everybody is here to make the most money and anybody that comes in here asking simple question can be perceived as a threat, why? Seems like that person is trying to stick his toe in the water, water that is full of piranha.
Nobody is interested in helping anybody here; everybody is a threat to everybody, one way or other.
