So traveling is one of those things that I've always wanted to do. There are many places that I would like to visit. Many parts of Europe, if not all parts. Most of Asia, parts of South America and parts of Africa. But I really don't know where I would like to live. You see, I was born and raised in sunny Southern California. It's the only place I've ever thought of as home, and I've never imagined living elsewhere. The food, the beaches, the girls. It's just too nice.
But then I watched Zeitgeist. Boy was that a mistake. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it all makes so much sense. Now, I could go into a whole novel on the documentary and it's sequel, but that's not why I'm here. Basically, I want to leave the United States. My timeline is roughly five years. Five years to save up, learn a new language (half-assedly) and develop some trade skill that can be used in my new target home.
So where should I go? I would like to be in a country that is not involved in the EU or any form that might be same on any continent. As far as my research has shown me, in Europe that leaves me Switzerland and Norway. I need beautiful women, fantastic beer, awesome scenery, cigarettes, a low(ish) living cost, and (preferably) a heavy metal scene.
So I turn to the greatest, most diverse forum on the internets. Fellow EVErs, where shall I live???

Even if you don't move at all, I doubt you will be living in the "USA" five years from now (might as well be living in the "Republic of California" by then or whatever that area will be calling itself)... so might as well stay there. Everywhere sucks right now, and will suck even more in the near future. California actually sounds like a pretty decent place to be in, just not in or too near LA - a smaller city, even a village-style town, now that would be just great - as long as you're somewhere near a natural fresh water source and there's some farmland nearby, you're going to be just peachy.
Actually, I'm afraid I was a bit too optimistic with my previous statements

Sounds like Switzerland is your only option, and that sure as hell isn't cheap.
Or if you feel like plunging yourself into degeneracy and realising how the USA isn't that bad, come to the UK for a week or two.

Lol, good point, both of you.
Now I do understand that at this current time the US is not at all that bad, its actually very nice. And where I am is not too bad either. But I'm afraid of where it is going. I don't want to be stuck here if things happen that I fear may and/or will. I'm more willing to take the chance that I didn't have to leave, rather than I should have left years ago.

Gonna be saying this.
Norway has pretty much what you wanted.
Plus freezing cold weather and everything is super-bloody expensive.
Other than that, come to the UK!

Except the lowish living costs part.
However, get trained in teaching english (In the Uk its called T.E.F.L - Teaching English as a Foreign Language- its not hard to do believe me, even I have quals in that) as it will be a good fallback for either a full-time job or a part-time extra cash job when you are there. In fact, it would be ideal for where-ever you decide to go.

/\__this.
Norway, Sweden, Denmark <- fairly expensive & interesting tax rates
Estonia <- interesting alternative
But as others have eluded too it's entirely possible that lots of places that seem good now may not be in 5 years time. I think that's why getting a good fall-back skill like the TEFL is such good advice.

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 05/12/2008 10:38:49 Every country/bank runs the same scheme or is being used in it, if you properly watched that movie you'll realise it's everywhere. Thing is ofcourse that the "consume, consume!" and "if you don't buy stuff on credit you're a wuss!" mentality now suddenly starts to make sense, thing is ofcourse that it already should have made sense.
The only way to battle it is to either fully abolish the monetary system or (if you have enough of the stuff) make use of it.

Don't move to the UK the women are dull, short, fat and grumpy.
Switzerland is expensive but an awesome place to live especially Geneva. In the summer you can hang out on the lake and the alps are an hour away.
Problem with Switzerland is getting in, you'll need a career first. I would go for one of the Nordic countries, Sweden, Norway oh yeh and visit Amsterdam thats a pretty damn cool place to hang out. /start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

I can recommend norway, as im from Norway :) Dont expect too much of the beer tho! Its not as cold as ppl might think (at the coast), unless you go north or inland during winter. But ofc not as warm as the mediteranian countries. Beautifull women here
If you like to go fishing its perfect, and lots of mountains if your into outdoor activities. Also many places to ski during winter.

Haven't seen the movie. But I did read the wiki of it. I gotta say the first part about the origins of religion are logical sense religion is made up anyways. But it seems the movie had lost the plot when it delves into the bull**** conspiracy theories and "New World Order" crapola.
It's as if people don't like the style of God in the religious form so they formulate a new God (aka conspiracy theories and big brother) in a different form.
It's very simple. They are all full of ****.
Having said that, move to Tahiti

Scandinavia is awesome, but I dunno about "low living cost"
Also you'd have to learn their funny moon languages.
Sweden would actually be top of my list but only because I've really liked the cities I've been to there. Goteborg is wonderful place.

@OP, It's funny but I've always wanted to move to California but the US won't let me in. Probably for good reason lol. Anyway, some great advice from others here. Also, interesting to hear what your dream lifestyle is... sounds like you want to go a bit rustic?
Based on your tastes, Thailand sounds like an opportunity for you, what do you think?
Aside from California, Canada and Iceland are my current favourites. I like mountaineering so those would be ideal while I still have the fitness and relative youth to do it! However, and more realistically for me, I'd be happy to have a small guest house in Wales or Scotland near some good peaks. Remote enough to get that isolated, out of the way of the hurly burly, and close enough to still be able to get some of the necessities. Ok comforts.

Sadly we're also unlucky that we live on a messed up, badly run and underfunded nanny-state island full of immigrants (most illegal) and idiots.
Such is life.
pfft england got it easy, try ireland, the day poland, lithuania and latvia joined the EU it seems the entire population of those countries got on a plane and moved to ireland, it seems like 50% of the people out on the streets are eastern european, and to make it even worse they are all driving bmw's they brought with them which were insured back home for peanuts, but the irish get screwed for insurance even on a tiny car its thousands of euro's
Every shop EVERY DELI EVERY GROCERY STORE, the staff is 95% eastern european (not exhaggerating) and if you want something you need to repeat it like 5 times because none speak bloody english, every day I go down to the shop to get a salad roll with 5 ingredients and I need to repeat each ingrediant 3 to 5 times
call me racist or whatever, but letting poland, lithuania and latvia into EU = huge mistake, same if ukraine or romania ever get let in.

This thread is funny. Yes, I am sure Japan is just elated with joy at the thought of letting in a bunch of people who let their own country go to hell, and would rather run away then fix it.
Here is a hint. The reason that they are so successful is because they dont let in the kind of ******s that the majority of the Western World has turned into over the last 50 years. Just sayin.

Well, moving to another country, specially if that country is in another continent, is hard, let me tell you. Prepare to star over in your life. You lose all your friends, relatives, your career, your references, your place in society. You'll know nobody, you'll be alone (for good or for bad) you won't have a place to go, you'll be in an unknow place. And surely, you'll feel out of society for a couple of years, until you get a gripe at what's going on socially (people continually making references to things you've never heard about, or that you can't possibly know because you didn't live there before.)
Really, you don't have a close idea of how tied you are to your town, family, circle of friends, society until you leave your home to live in another place. We have this romantic idea that we are independent, that we need nobody else but ourselves... and then you leave and realize that you are who you are becuase you have a lot of people around you that makes you who you are.
It's not for the faint of heart, really. Think twice before leaving. Take it from someone who did it and went through hard times.
P.S: Unless you are a orphan, you live with the constant fear that you'll someday receive that call and wish that you have enough money to take the first plane to your country to say goodbye to your loved ones. That sucks, really. ----

Hmm... That's a matter of opinion. Some people can be quite happy with their own company and these sorts would be at home anywhere they went. If, like me, you can be alone or not and it makes no difference either way, you can go anywhere in the world and still not feel out of place.
Some of us actually don't need others and I have been to other countries and have been prepared to stay permanently. Only my lack of job and inability to get one without a lot of beurocratic red tape there forced me to come back on two occasions, a third due to problems that made it dangerous for me to stay.
Personally, I don't much like who I have become since coming back to the UK but the society here does things to you mentally and if you're not used to it due to living abroad, it grates on you. When I was in Philippines, Indonesia and even Malta, I felt free and full of life, here in the UK, I feel caged and ready to end it all.

Well, when you move to another country you take with you not only the good things, but also the bad ones. Your "karma" to put it simply. You have to really think if your problems are something that's coming from yourself or from your enviroment. Because if it's coming from you, you won't get rid of them moving elsewhere.
And also, the first couple of years you live in constant romance with your new enviroment. Then you start to get into it and see all the underlying problems that you disregarded at the begining. After all, no society is perfect. All have their problems. And you are used to your own society's problems. But when you have to deal with the problems of another society, well, that's completely different. Some people can live with it, others don't.
Next march is going to make 7 years that I'm living in another country. It's been a rollercoaster, most of it. I'm happy, but it's far from my ideal situation. It's been harder than I thought (and I'm of the "happy with myself" type of guy.) Of course, every experience is different. If you are a millionaire, for example, the world is your home. For for the average guy, it's not something you should decide lightly. At least, in my humble opinion. ----

The legal immigrants maybe but there's not many of them. Also, have you considered how many British people would be working instead of on the dole if these immigrants didn't take them? Some of those on benefits actually want to work but can't because there are not enough jobs for everyone. Why are these immigrants allowed to come here if we have not got jobs enough for the people we've already got here? Why are refugees not sent home when the trouble in their country is over? The refugees from Afganistan are still here and most of them are getting benefits, that one reason we are paying so much damned tax.
Some immigrants get jobs in security (it's racist here to say who), they only want night shift and they do it so they can sleep all night and expect to get paid for it. I really rage at that because I work the same hours for the same money and I stay awake but their actions reflects badly on all of us who work in security. Everyone thinks we all sleep when we're on duty because they make up such a large number of security guards.

Most immigrants working here are legal and contribute to the system. Its alot harder to illegally work in the UK than USA, but as its still possible it should be stamped out and benefits to people who never ever work should be reduced (oh hey... thats happening I think soon).
If someone is willing to come to a completely different country, learn a new language and put up with higher costs of living and immense taxes then I think they deserve a job here. The EU works both ways, if you ever get completely sick of it here the you can learn Spanish and work there for a while. Guess what they get? Not many benefits, but a far less nanny state and siestas in the middle of the day. Of course, you could also do what alot of Brits are doing lately and move to New Zealand. Heck I might eventually.
Edit: New Zealand is probably more safe than UK because the expensive flight...

Edited by: serpent Tongue on 06/12/2008 06:50:27 On the paper denmark could look like the perfect place. Relativly cheap beer, member of EU but we have some reservations f. ex we don't have the euro but dkr. We vere the first to leagalize P*** and have the very little mermaid.
The downside is how ever is that our minister of state is best pals with bush and he is trying to close christania. Danes are often afraid of evrything foreign so you might get juged harshly unless you move to the larger citys but i read in an article somwhere that copenhagen is the most expencive european capital to live in. Our metal scene sucks but you can easly get to festivals in britain, germany, norway and sweden.
But the worst thing we got is something called the "jantelaw i dont want to get into details but basicly it is a law that states: Don't think you're anyone special or that you're better than us.
Look it up on wiki if you wan't to know more:)
So if you can live with being part of EU my advise would be move to Northern germany, flensburg is a decent sized city, get a job in denmark as our average pay-check is far better then you can live pretty good i gues, but the trick is going to be to let the german immigrations to accept you working in denmark i don't now what policy they have on that.
But if you should end up choosing denamrk let me warn you do not and i say it again do not move to "langeland" means longland it is an island and it is neigh impossible to get a decent connection on your mobile phone.
Anyway good luck finding a new palce to call home....

Five years to save up, learn a new language (half-assedly) and develop some trade skill that can be used in my new target home.
The way it works is that they first reveal to you something that is true and makes sense. That is the first bit of the movie that covers existence of Jesus Christ. Next, while you're in receiving and trusting mode from the first bit, they suddenly move on to 9/11 and other things. While you're still believing them from the first bit that carries over to the rest of everything else that they tell you. It is an effective propaganda technique already in use by many cults/religions to brand people into their following. And if you have any common sense in you will not base your life's decisions on propaganda films, srsly.

@ OP: I'd recommend somewhere in the tropics that's still open and not caged with stupid bureaucracy and crap.
Example: Philippines
Upsides: -people like foreigners, though most think you're big walking moneybags -opportunities for foreigners for big jobs is way higher than local folk -girls are hot (speaking from experience, or else she'll strangle me as she's reading over my shoulder now >_< ) -laws and policing are light, but not to the point of letting organized crime take much root -people dont want to/care to impose whats "right" to do in your own household (**** YEAH!) -people are very guest-oriented -in terms of PC infrastructure: software piracy is basically the main way people get whatever software they want down here, for pennies. Also, download speeds here, whilst a bit on the slow side, are heckuva-lot more stable than what you get in USA, for lots cheaper too
Downsides: -people tend to get crabbish to tourists and newcomers to the country (be warned for taxi drivers giving off triple-digit fare numbers) -political drama is an everyday thing here. Its quite a surprise we still have a working government, if at all. -stay away from the seedier side of towns. They'll EASILY rob you of your cash in a day, either in a bar, with an "escort" or just being in the wrong side of town -unfortunately, organized crime and the "other side" of civilized life is a normal thing here. Heck, I'm an everyday Joe and yet I've got contacts on both sides of the Straight and Narrow. Knowing people is way better than any paycheck. -

See, this is why I'll never leave EVE! You guys ****ing rock!
Okay. Now I've considered Canada of course, for any American thats usually the first place you think of running. But if Canada is part of the North American Union in the future, there won't be much difference between Canada and the US. Norway seemed like a very logical choice to me because (from what I've read, and I'm sure someone here can correct me) they are unlikely to join the EU anytime soon. I want to be in a country that is not part of these giant conglomerates of government. Switzerland is almost always a good choice, but logically speaking they are in a weak position due to thier geographical location. Norway, being up north, is a bit safer, hopefully.
Now as far as Asia, the Philippines and Thailand I've also considered. You live like a king in both for what I pay for my car. But, I'd like to be in Europe. Maybe I'm just saying that because I haven't been to either. But in southeast Asia, there isn't much in the way of scholarly work being done, at least not to the extent that is is in Europe and other industrialized nations. And Japan? Yeah, right. The US built that country after WWII. Theres no way it can be much different in many ways.
Now having said that, I completely understand that 95% of the industrialized nations are ran the same way, suck in much of the same ways. The point of this endeavor is to escape the clutches of the economic powers. That means living in a crappy small flat. That means not owning a car, or a cell phone. That means not having a television. Honestly, a computer will most likely happen, but thats what would be used to keep up to date. And pron, of course. I figure I have two options: leave the country or start a revolution.
A lot of really valueable information has been given here, thank you guys so much. Keep it coming! I turn to this community because of the incredible diversity from lifestyles, social circles and countries. And I'm going to look into classes on teaching English as a foreign language.

I don't want to be stuck here if things happen that I fear may and/or will. I'm more willing to take the chance that I didn't have to leave, rather than I should have left years ago.
Maybe you should stay and do something constructive instead of taking the easy way out. The US has gone through a lot of hard times and a lot of good times, you running away is like spitting in the face of the people that have fought hard for the opportunities we currently have and the people currently trying to change the US in a positive way.
I know we have a lot of problems that need fixing, but quite frankly if you leave the US just because you are afraid of its future it makes you a coward. If you were leaving because you fell in love with a different country or a different culture then that's another thing and would be understandable. However you have no idea where you'd want to live.
If you feel strongly about the US's future enough to leave then maybe you should use that motivation to change things, even if it is a small contribution.
Not trying to put you down, just wanted to give you a different perspective on this. Good Luck!

Well, atleast our taxes in sweden is used to change things in our cities, hospitals are partially free of charge, dentist for people under 20 is free and so on... while in USA the "tax" goes into the pocket of the federal reserve

But isn't he doing exactly what the people who founded the US did?

Nope, you can't equate the two. Discovering a new land and escaping religious persecution, then revolting against their former overlords and establishing a new country is different then being a chicken and leaving when things start to get rough. He has reaped the benefits of this country and now wants to leave because its getting a lil rough?

From a social psychological perspective it is human nature to be curious; I think it would best to visit the sovereign of your choice for an extended time period, prior to the decision to relocate.

Did you know, that even during the great depression, that there was only 25% unemployment?
Also, currently in the US, the unemployment rate for those with a college degree is only 3%. those without a degree have a 9-10% unemployment rate which is expected to get a lot worse.
I have noticed that theres a huge sum of people that make excuses why they cant get a degree or how its too expensive, but its all lies.
Americans make too many mistakes because they dont know wtf they are doing. Like having families when you dont make enough money, working in a field you like rather then one that provides stability longterm, not going to college because your lazy, or staying at a crap job because you are comfortable rather then getting a good job and sacrificing a little comfort.
We also allowed bankruptcy. Which moron decided that allowing someone to go to court and essentially make their debt disapear was a good idea. I'd say that if you don't have a job your required to go to the WPA within 2 weeks and start working there until you get another so that you can pay your debts, otherwise you go to jail until you register. Jail won't be a nice place either. It'll be a cell with a toilet, small bed, and you can look through the bars.
Lazy ****s.

My point is, don't run from the problems here.
come together with the rest of those that see the true errors of this country, and make yourself heard. Our voices are small now, but slowly people will realize how blinded they are by greed, and selfishness.
