"Every year the players ask "CCP, what are you giving us for Christmas?"
This year we are giving you the gift of the Christmas Performance Patch which contains a massive boost to both large fleet and small gang engagements as well as much improved game play for every player in New Eden. Focusing on improvements to the Need for Speed initative, this very special patch streamlines performance to significantly increase frames per second (fps) and makes improvements to the patching process to allow for a smoother patching performance in general.
Players who participated in the testing on Singularity have noticed much improved playability and performance. In one case, during a fleet fight test, 600 additional drones and fighters were added to the grid. In the vast majority of cases the players were not aware they had been added until they were told.
The deployment date for Quantum Rise 1.0.3 will be 10th December 2008 and Tranquility will be offline between 11.00 to 15.40 GMT."
This gift is like a magazine you subscribe to saying, "and this year for a special treat in december, we are going to send you the 12th copy of the year, for the normal price!"
whoopy.

Tbhqfh I think this bit here if it truely makes fleet fights playable and enjoyable then alot of players really are going to feel like kids on christmas day after this patch.

So you're annyoed that this doesn't affect your gamestyle?
Jesus, mary and josefina you people are happy about NOTHING.
And we pay LESS for expansions.
Other games have same monthly costs(semantics aside). Other games charge for expansions. EVE doesnt, EVE=free expansions.

in reality:
CCP sit in front of a open log fire, supping brandy and stuffing their faces with the finest meats of the season.
While the poor players, are in the cold (of space) out side, looking in through the iced up snowdrift layden windows, where we catch the eye of a dev who notices us peering through drops his turkey leg and grabs a keyboard to look busy and passify us with claims of performance boosts in his snug, festive log cabin laughing with fellow devs having the occasional money fight when not too busy relaxing and wathcing his ass grow...

Go to your troll hideout, decide what you want and come back with something non-contradictonary.
And in REALITY; There are people at CCP who go these on CHRISTMAS DAY to make sure your game is up and running, to clean stuff up so it doens't clog etc.
But do you thank? No. Me me me me! Wah!

I would rather they'd announced that they weren't giving us anything for christmas as they were too busy working on speed improvements, as opposed to such a damp squib of an announcement.

He's got a point though - a "Christmas Performance Patch" is hardly a gift, it's something we would've got anyway, like giving a kid a school uniform as a present.

No no no...
Your paying to play, that's it, just to play. Not for the work, you have NO rights, they don't have to do ANYTHING you say just because you pay to play their game.
Infact, you don't even pay to play, you pay for the potential right to get to the servers.

*laugh* Yes, I forgot about that. But everyone seems to scream for in-game stuff that I forget the fun flavourful stuff like that.
However, that's still three entirely unrelated things in 5 years. I just wish people would shut up. In fact, I only liked the Apoth because it worked with a story in game - the snowball launchers were fun, but out of place.

Amen. In fact, couldn't you take the **** out of that in the shop? And silly people always asking for gifts.
In saying all this, I do like the concept of rewards on individual characters. I'm the oldest character on the server, but I've got nothing to show for it (apart from my starting corp being CONCORD of course).

Thats the point though thats is what I pay them for, I pay them not just to run the server's but to maintain and improve them and the game code. That's why I own as many accounts as I do because CCP do good work. I've played many MMO's (and thank god WoW was not one of them), where you pay just for the server cost's and they charge you for expansions, and while sure the expansions are good I decided id didn't want to pay for all of that so left those and came back to eve.
So in that view I do feel that my subscription fee's should be used in part to improve the game :)

I like the comparason between ccp and a nightclub. Sure you pay to get in, but when that nightclub wants to keep its customers from going else where, it sepnds the money it charges for letting people in to upgrade it. It doesnt not charge enterence fee and then added upgrade fee when the time comes!
Dont get me misunderstood, i dont want ccp to charge less and never upgrade, 'free expansions' is one of the things that attracted me to the game originally, but make no mistake, they are not free.

Well actually you would have legal recorse in that situation. At least under UK law and I suspect in most jurisdictions.
Legally service providers have to make reasonable efforts to provide the service. It's acceptable for a service provider to fail due to technical issues or the nature of the job (you can't expect a lawyer to win every case nor a doctor to cure every patient) but flat out not doing the job asked of you is not acceptable.
But you were spot on about Eve. We pay for the ability to attempt to connect to the server at such times as CCP is able to make it available to us and use whatever functionality is operational in accordance with the rules CCP dictate. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

Nightclubs actually spend most of the money to keep the bar up, pay rent, electricity etc. Much like CCP. And nightclubs DO add fees when they upgrade.
Don't start with me on my comparisons, you'll lose
Compared to other games, they are.
Other games = pay to play and pay for expansions. EVE = pay to play and NO pay for expansions.

EVE is more like a ball pit.
You pay to get in and romp around. CCP uses this fee to pay for new different colored balls at regular intervals and they hose out the kid pee every once in a while.

Quote: I like the comparason between ccp and a nightclub. Sure you pay to get in, but when that nightclub wants to keep its customers from going else where, it sepnds the money it charges for letting people in to upgrade it. It doesnt not charge enterence fee and then added upgrade fee when the time comes!
Actually most clubs do just that. At least where I live, the special parties for xmas or new year are all way beyond the normal "features" of the clubs.... but also cost a much higher entrance fee, which is exclusively for that day. And still I do not have a say, what the club got to do. I can buy my way in, then I have to follow the house rules and accept, what is offered. My absolute only way of protest is to not pay again.... you got the same way of protest for EVE.
Oh, and actually be honest.. most of us here are spending a lot more hours in EVE than in clubs... paying less for EVE than for ocasional club entry fees.

It's not misused.
EVE might have HIGHER monthly costs, but doesn't make the expansions cost any more.
You can tell me "EVE has higher monthly fees!" and ill gladly discuss that point(one point being, it's a niche game and needs higher fees), but as the point i brought up, it's apt.

In Europe:
Eve, monthly subscription Ç 14.95 * 12 = Ç 179.40 (includes 2 expansions: Empyrean Age and Quantum Rise)
WoW, monthly subscription Ç 12.99 * 12 = Ç 155.88 One expansion (Wrath of the Lich King) Ç 34.99 (Wow makes one expansion a year.) 1 year + expansion= Ç 190.87
I pay monthly by credit card. So if I started at the beggining of 2008, I should have payed Ç 190.87 to play the latest WoW version and Ç 179.40 to play the latest Eve version.

At least for me (using my regular CC monthly payment) it's cheaper. ----

Don't forget, EVE is $19.95 for the first month + the game, so the game is $5. With WoW + Lich King to even start you need to buy the Game + Burning Crusade + Lich King, each of which is $30+. So the startup, fully patched cost of WoW is even more.

I don't mind if we don't get anything "special" for christmas, but I certainly do mind the way they introduced that patch.
A simple "Hey, we have these improvements and are speeding up deployment, so you can play during holidays!" would have been nice.

Yeah - I'm tired of the constant whining.
"CCP - stop doing features all the time - fix the lag already."
"Damn CCP - performance boost should have been there in 1999 - I want more ships."
"Yeah - maybe we can now do 50 ships - but this 150 ship battle just lagged to hell"
"Yeah - maybe we can now do 100 ships - but this 250 ship battle just lagged to hell"
"Yeah - maybe we can now do 200 ships - but this 500 ship battle just lagged to hell"
"CCP only cares for miners" "CCP only cares for pvpers" "No love ever for mission runners" "CCP hates small gangs" "CCP hates Amarr" "CCP hates Minmatar" "CCP hates Gallente" "CCP hates Caldari" "CCP destroyed small gang pvp" "To hell with small gangs - where are my epic fights???" "CCP should stop playing its own game - cheats" "Doesn't CCP even know it's own gameplay???" "Claiming space is too much grind - give alliances some love" "All CCP does is helping the big alliances - why can't I as a solo pilot not easily mine Arkonor or hunts rats undisturbed - it's so unfair"
Best of all is the attitude that people expect a 100% bug-free, lag-free, always on, perfectly balanced game - because *that*s* what they are paying for. Totally ignoring the fact that they haven't seen a perfectly running piece of software larger than a simple text editor ever. And certainly can't point to a lag-free, bug-free MMOG anywhere. And let's not even get started about how impossible it is to get a complex game world running - let alone perfectly.
sigh
merry xmas to all, but especially to CCP for creating and maintaining this incredible game - the only true MMOG (AFAIK) on the market (no games with instances need even apply, shards suck) --- Save the forum: Think before you post. ISK BUYER = LOOSER EVE TV- Bring it back!

Other mmorpgs give all kinds of cool things to people who subscribe for certain periods of time, somtimes in game stuff and somtimes free game time etc.
i realise that ccp use the cash we pay for the game to keep it all running, paying for the sevrers other costs and ofc the expansions - which we are all agreed is good stuff.
I dont think it would take very long to whip up somthing fun for the players for christmas, or aniversarys etc. Remeber the players dont get rewarded for loyaty and stuff, so its nice to get somthing either usful for fun once in a while to keep the player base sweet. Eve as far as i know has the most players that have a 2nd or more accounts, no reduction in cost for each addititional account, no free bes for going above and beond a single player who picked it up off the shelf and played for 3 months.
sure theres going to always be people who disagree "you have time to spare doing xyz, wheres my performance boost/new content bla bla bla". But on the whole it'd be a nice buzz for the masses. Also id like to add that there have been a DISTINCT lack of any events global or local for YEARS now, and well i expect this is another reason why the general player base expect somthing a little more from time to time. CCP started well, and are loosing some of the things that made them cool, but i guess now the cash is rolling in they dont give a ****.

a) Someone to eject from a faction fitted Nightmare right next to my pod. b) A whole extravaganza of idiots in faction ships belt-ratting in lowsec.

Well, thanks CCP for another extended downtime during my prime playing hours. Look forward to the next royal screwing from you.
And to all you ****er CCP fanbois out there who still feel the need to praise these ******s for providing the shoddy service we pay for, and criticize those who take issue with it...remember to send a nice thankyou letter to your local phone company this Christmas.
