I just started watching it, but I'm rapidly finding that B5 is the best sci-fi show I've ever found (though the new BSG comes in close behind). Yeah, it's old, the acting is somewhat campy at times, and the CGI is aging quickly, but it's still awesome.
(Besides, a little campiness can be good at times)
Personally, my favorite characters was Londo ("Miiiiiister Gariiiibaldiii! My gooood friend!").

Edited by: Janu Hull on 09/12/2008 22:14:31 Edited by: Janu Hull on 09/12/2008 22:13:03 Season 3 and Season 4 are some of the best science fiction, bar none but maybe the last season of the new BSG, you will ever see.
Babylon 5 laid the groundwork for continuous tight season long stories that have made BSG and the Stargates what they are, and still did it better. As for the CGI, keep in mind, they were the first to run their special effects completely in CGI. The pilot movie broke Return of the Jedi's record for the most ships on screen at one time. And that number is still more than EVE can handle in one system at a time.
Its regrettable that JMS held so tightly to that five year arch, the series that followed tended to suffer kind of a "ok, now what?" syndrome, though I still stand by Crusade as well.
Which reminds me, gonna rename the carrier tonight. Haven't thought about B5 in a while, but I can still replay the entire story in my head like I saw it yesterday. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

I have all the B5/Crusade magazines , some are signed by the actors as well, got a few of the micromachines as well.
All complete and in mint condition. just taking up space...
If anyone want to make me a reasonable offer for the lot, then its yours.
(i also have a load of the JPG's made by fans, printed off onto A4/A3 by a colour laser (tektronix colour printer(hot wax printer)) I used to support a few of these huge printers at work and used the B5 pics to test them with.

B5 was good. Graphics/cgi was well done for tv for its' time. However I still feel Farscape was a hundred times better. :D B5 is mostly serious with a handful of laughs. FS was a good mix of both.
But yea, def a great show!
(Oh, and the FS movie Peacekeeper Wars was crap compared to what it SHOULD have been)

Edited by: Davina Braben on 09/12/2008 22:38:26 I really loved it while I was watching it.
When it was good it was sublime. When it was bad it was cringe inducing. But somehow the good bits made up for the terrible bits.
I'm afraid to rewatch any of the original show in case it hasn't aged well. I'm afraid it will turn from this grand operatic sweep into a clunky show with lousy acting and horrible special effects.
The spin-offs have generally been terrible

Well the last series got kinda messed up because they were going to cancel it at the end of series 4...fair amount of rewriting had to take place...I was also pretty ****ed of when the space sim was killed based on B5. Sierra are a bunch of *****s... ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

I didn't know the actors had passed away, I cried when B5 came to an end.
Londo was a great character, so was G'Kar. I bet the EVE developers copied the Narn and created the Minmatar.

You'll enjoy it I got "Krise" from farscape, just spelled differently. To stay on topic...Looking back at B5 it really feels ugly compared to today's CGI in tv...:( When I get back to the states I might rewatch the whole series again just for fun.
Best episode ever of Farscape is "Wont be fooled again" is when John gets caught by a Scaren and goes on a ridiculous mindtrip as though he took a ****load of shrooms or something.
"Crais: FREEZE! You're under arrest! You have the right to the remains of a silent attorney! If you cannot afford one... tough noogies! You can make ONE phone call! I recommend Trixie: 976-Triple 5-LOVE. Do you understand these rights as I have explained them to you?! Well do ya, PUNK? Crichton: No... Crais: Well... then I can nott arrest you!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crais: I like your style hombre, but this is no laughing matter. Assault on a police officer. Theft of police property. Illegal possession of a firearm. FIVE counts of attempted murder. That comes to... 29 dollars and 40 cents. Cash, cheque or credit card?

Oh god I love Babylon 5. I hadn't seen it in years, but I recently watch the first 2 sesaons on Hulu. Despite it's aging, it still stands as a very strongly written show that is just an experience to watch. I love the new BSG, and it's the revolutionary sci fi show for this decade, but Babylon 5 was one of the first ancestors of this current decade's wave of highly serialized shows. And even after watching good stuff like Lost and BSG, I go back and the story still has not lost it's luster, it's just incredible.
Too bad crusade never got anywhere. I want to know what happened with the drahk plague. :(

An awesome show with actual plot development and well thought-out character arcs. The shifting relationship between G'Kar and Londo is always moving, as is the the pithy humour G'Kar's dialogue contains. He remains one my favourite sci-fi characters of all time.
And the standoff between Delenn and the Earth Force fleet in season 4 is still epic. "Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives...be somewhere else!"

This is one of my favorite shows.
The music they used when Sheridan sent the nuke-armed White Star crashing into Zaa'dum is so awesome it gives me shivers each time I hear it.
My favorite part is the assault against Earth's orbital defenses on season 4.
I found season 5 to be a bit of a letdown, tought. it didn't have the same dramatic intensity. ------------------------------------------

Make Babylon 5: In the Beginning movie part of your B5 plan. It might be the only B5 movie that is a must for everyone that watched the show. It is a story about the Earth-Minbari war that gets referenced a lot in the series, but never shown. Just don't watch it first. It has characters that don't appear in the series until later and you get more out of it, if you are already familiar with the series. I think it was originally aired after season 4, but I don't think it shows you anything even spoilerish, if you have watched the three first seasons.

na that was ledgend of the rangers, and yes that was rubbish, crusade was the one that followed on from the B5 film that i cant remember the name of that had 2 massive uber ships, biggest earth had etc etc, one of them went off to cure a plage that infected earth.
back to topic, B5 had one of the best interconnecting story lines in sci fi ever!

Babylon 5 is hands-down my favourite sci-fi series ever. Londo was the best character in the entire thing. Like a lot of people, I found the last season that they tacked on to be substandard but watched it anyway so it wouldn't be over :(.
I think CCP could do well by taking some ideas from B5 for ambulation. I'd love to have stations in lowsec with run-down sections. Even more, wouldn't it be awesome if you got in-station missions to assassinate NPCs etc? I know it would probably detract from the ship gameplay to have too much involvement in the station environments but there's just so much potential in stations.

I saw her rage filled face in my mind as I read that. Hell hath no fury like a womans scorn accompanied by a fleet that can annihilate you without blinking, and Delenn was FURIOUS!
"We have unfinished business old friend" I cried as Vir picked up the imperial emblem.
The development of the characters was marvelous indeed. Londo's face as the Centauri fleet bombards Narn with mass drivers (nuclear weaponry). Finally his actions dawned on him as he watched the destruction of the planet.

"It is too late for the pebbles to vote, the avalanche has already begun."
Hands down the best sci-fi series of its time and the standard setter for any sci-fi show that came after it. I've got all the episodes and movies and spinoff shows sitting on my HD and am slowly rewatching everything.
Storylines, character development, CGI is still reasonable for todays standards, it has it all and then some....one of the few shows i've never missed an eppisode of.
My favourite characters are ofcourse Garibaldi with his sharp humour and very deep personality, Kosh with his ever mindcrunching answers and questions, Ivannova because she's hot smart and funny, Londo because he's drunk alot ...hell almost every character in that show is my favourite tbh. Special mention for Delenn and Sheridan ofcourse as they drive almost the entire story arc.
