As you know, in the real world, related skills are relatively easier to pick up: if you know a couple of programming languages, it would logically be easier to learn another one.
The gist of my idea is as follows -- each main skill within a group (E.G., Gunnery, Spaceship Command) would grant a small bonus to the training speed of skill within that group. This obviously requires a major change to the calculations performed, but as I said, it's my own little pipe dream...

I would have to disagree... just because i can speak one language doesn't mean it will be easier for me to pick up another language... Yes there is such a thing as general working knowledge.. thats why there are skills such as gunnery and spaceship command and engineering etc... those are the skills that are the "general working knowledge" skills of said operations. at which point it usually doesn't take any longer to learn to use a hammer over the time it takes to learn to use a screwdriver. as opposed to the time it takes to learn how to drive a car probably wouldnt take as long as it takes to learn how to drive a semi or a bus etc..
yes i know that spaceship command and gunnery don't actually give speed bonuses based on levels.. but they are pre-requisites to alot of those skills as is general working knowledge to most other things.

That's what I meant -- a high Gunnery level should technically give a little boost to, say, Medium Hybrid Turret, since MHT is directly dependant on Gunnery. |

not quite true, just going off the Spanish, seeing as how they "settled" many parts of the world being able to speak Spanish will give you a general understanding of the other languages derived from it.
but i must agree with the OP if i have refining at 5 then i should be able to train veldspar procesing faster, but i dont think that the boost should be too major, other wise it just makes it too easy.
The boost, if any, should only come once the primary skill is at 5

Yep, a 5% boost once you hit V on the primary should be enough, methinks.

Edited by: Yolo on 17/12/2008 20:30:33 Give 0.02% per level trained in the current skill tree.
example: you have 10 learning skills at lvl 5, and the last one at lvl 4. You would receive a (10x5+1x4)*0.02% skill training increase is 1,04% Faster
I can both agree that there is logic in it, and with numbers like this. its realistic. (we are not talking about 10-15%). it would also be a small 'here you go' to the old players like myself that did not have a bloody clue what Attributes was for and that Charisma sucked when we created our chars.
So gunnery for me. 32 Gunnery skills trained. 18 at lvl 5 (18*5=90) 14 at lvl 4 (14*4=56)
(18*5+14*4)*0,02% = 2,92% faster training time.

it makes total sense in the real world but we learn thing diferent in EVE. think the matrix. a skill book is loaded in to the pod and the pod pumps the information in to your head. the learning skills allow your head to accept the skills faster. but that is because it increases the rate at witch out brain can accept it.
knowing about any other skills does not increase the rate at witch it can be downloaded. this is a fixed amount.
as i see it. the gunnery/engenering skills ect are like foundation level. they will be used when when learning the higher skills and important to know. but the higher skills have totaly diferent information in them. and you have to learn this new information.

I could agree that Eve skillbooks probably are prone to catbells and shortcuts, but I disagree that learning should be sped up. This would be just another advantage to having higher skillpoints, which is not what Eve needs at the moment.

/Signed I'ts called skill synergy
http://dnd.wikia.com/wiki/Skills#Skill_Synergy
Well if EVE were in a D&D universe, synergy bonuses would be like more dmg, faster ships, better tracking etc.. But converted to EVE universe, that should indeed be bonus to training time.

Actually your wrong, because there are highly specialize chars that are catching up rapidly simply because they have been able to balance their attributes according to their desired playing style.
We who started our chars 5 years ago didnt know charisma sucked or that perception and willpower was primary for pvp and memory and intelligence was primary for carebearism.
Simply you have people out there with almost 30 points in each of their primary, thus catching up really damned fast and there is nothing the high-skillpoint old chars can do about it because we are stuck with the way we created our chars.
I have to say that today with specialization, there are few bonuses to having lots of sp. Well except from the part that we can do several areas, in general if we are better the bonus is %5 or 2% because of a lvl 5 instead of a lvl 4.
2% bonus for an additional 3.5 years of playtime compared to a enemy in the battlefield... yeah great.

I think the ONLY reason to give ANY bonuses or 'boosts' at level 5 of ANY skill would be for an incective to attain the precious level 5 most say to hell with.
Why do people play Amarr? Because unlike the other races, Amarr characters are much more difficult to play. |

It kinda makes sense to me. Kinda if someone has a nack for languages, they can pick up a new one faster than normal. But I recon it should be based on what you have learned recently and what ratio of skills you have.
Like if you have spent 2 weeks learning gunnery skills, You have a bonus to learning more of them. If Gunnery is on of your highest % SP (sections) that would add a further bonus.
Where as If you spent 3 weeks learning missles, But missles is one of your lowest % then you would only get a small bonus.
