Edited by: Gundog Prime on 20/07/2004 22:52:24 This is not about politics per se... This is not about grudges... This is about PvP on my PC!
Until the 'Blanking' Question is fully explored, i.e can you somehow run EVE at icon level and thus speed up poor PC response time, i have to suspend myself from the PA. Simply put with my poor specs i can't be in ANY way effective. Engagements of more than 20 ships in total leave me with progressive screenshots. I don't begrudge the 70+mil i lost in my full implants, nor a simply replacable Tristan, but if i am unable to fight i find myself unable to exist in 0.0 space . I will not stay in a 0.0 alliance simply to be only effective in peace time, and thus just another beggar in space. For the time being i'll keep skilling my character obviously, but unless i can Blank, i can't fight.
Should Blanking be allowed and possible with Software manipulation i will return and see if i can fight on using it. If not, and i fear it won't be, i shall have to hand in my resignation from PA and any 0.0 Alliance til further notice.
It gives me no satisfaction to do this, i didn't mind the loss of my Implants if only i had had a fighting chance to do something other than be a target.
I have been proud to have been a member of the Phoenix Alliance, i have been proud to stand in it's name (If only as a target) and i will miss many friends, and will probably still stay on TS if im allowed which i hope i am. The GODS guys and all the guys in PA i have chatted with in TS are good guys. I will make no statement on the GODS forums as to this, this is my official post on the matter. To most people this will be irrelevant but in ALL the games i've played i have NEVER found a group of people i'm prouder to be with than GODS....
Stoop, keep the guys safe ok? --------------------------------------------------------------

I hope CCP adds an option to replace ship models with simple 2D bitmaps, that would bring decent players up to par with players using that exploit and at the same time also would not totally ruin graphics.
It's sad to see you leave gundog, I hope you think about it again, but I can somehow understand you.
For each ship that warps in (or is at the position where I warp to) I get a delay of 0.5-2 seconds, so if there are 30 ships, Eve freezes for about half a minute.

Edited by: Gundog Prime on 19/07/2004 21:53:30 Well the reply has been made, its official...
Blanking is a bannable offence, so it seems CCP is happy to hand those with higher quality systems the upper hand.
It's their decision, it's their game, and their choice...
But without a way to minimize the GFX setup substantially i still feel its discrimination. But that's just IMHO.
As such i tender my resignation from PA and GODS, i can't PvP without Blanking and i can't play if i get caught Blanking so i'm screwed...CCP's decision kills PvP for me and thus 0.0 space.
Perhaps when i get my new PC i'll be able to come back...
I still think it stinks but i don't run CCP
I might leave this account in the hands of GODS to use while i use my 2nd one. That way i can contribute somehow...
I'll mail u ingame about that Stoop --------------------------------------------------------------

Don't let machine problems get you down Gundog.
Do you need to upgrade? It might be easier than you think.
Ask yourself 3 questions
1. Does my machine have the potential for an upgrade?
2. How much money am I willing to invest?
3. Do I know people I can get cheap/free computer equipment from?
I have 3 machines all capable of running EVE - well (not stellar but enough for me to enjoy the game like everyone else). I was able to put them all together for a $900 cost to myself
P4 1.6GHz 256MB ram 64MB video - cost $100 Athlon XP 2200 256MB ram 64MB video - cost $350 Athlon XP 2400 512MB ram 128MB video - cost $450
The stuff I paid for was motherboards, chips, memory, video cards, cases and atx power supplies. Stuff like floppy drives, CD-roms, Hard Drives, monitors, keyboards and trackballs (I hate mice) I acquired from friends who upgraded, co-workers who are tossing old machines and my old 200MHz and 800MHz systems. I even acquired a broadband router, CAT5 cables and a switchbox and cables this way.
I'm not here to toot my own horn but to say it's quite possible on a fixed budget to build / make a capable machine from some decent new parts and some ****e peripherals.

Well the wife has a policy coming out in Sept that we are allocating some funds from for a new PC, with Tech Support from my Dad who runs the R.A.F Tech Flight in Kinloss i should be more than able to construct a decent computer with the funds available....
Could you recommend a more detailed look at the components i might need for 3 different strengths of PC...
and cheers for the constructive help --------------------------------------------------------------

Gfx are only part of video gaming, to some they are more important then others, if they were not important at all EVE would be entirly wire frame triangles. #

I recommend a GF4 ti4200, 128 mb AGPx8 card. IT's very cheap and provided you have an agpx8 on your motherboard should give you the performance you are looking for.
I also recomend at least 512 mb of memory and preferably a 2 Ghz P4 (or cpu of similar performance).
I get reasonably good performance on a setup as above, but would like a faster one. Alas the I dont have the money for it.... -- "I am an expert in not caring. I agree w/ Schani - 128MB GeForce cards are the cheapest and many motherboards that are sold now come w/ 8x AGP (just ask to make sure) I picked up a decent soyo motherbd w/ 8x for my AMD processor for $60. 512kb memory (nothing superfast just 2700)is really ideal for EVE but you also need a processor that will utilize it. An AMD AthlonXP 2200 processor is great and can be bought for under $100.
I mean really there is no need for expensive crap that you won't use. Like the stuff on commercial prebuilt systems. That's why I build my own. It's just plain cheaper and I get more bang for my buck.
GL to you and hope you get back in action soon.

First - if you found a new mobo without AGP 8x or PCI Express 16x (one of the other), I'd be surprised.
Second - you mean 512 MB of memory (I sure as hell hope).

Doesn't mean the game will run decently for him even then. Maybe when they fix the laggy GUI

tbh i found more of a performance in increase (not from upgrading my gfx card which is costly to do) but to increase the ram from my pc from 512mb to 1gb
I got a massive improvement and Ram is mostly dirt cheap unless you go for the all singin all dancin overclocked Corsair stuff. Look into that. Sass Arcane Technologies |

Yup , I upgraded my RAM to 1 gig last year when Planetside came out , never had any problems since. Prolly the best upgrade I've ever done.

i see problems in those things : - GUI (why teh hell i cannot turn off this stupid lights on it ??? and why making background total solid (w/o transparency) dnt give any improvement??
- memory leak ( after couple hours of play u have even problems with draging multiple items from cargo to can etc. etc.)
1 example from tooday bkg thingy ... we warped in on evol/m0o fleet at station ... and guess what? 1 min freeze (i closed all windows to avoid this but it sisnt help :/ )
and last thing is ... why we cannot change gfx details? O_o

Aye, I have ~1.5 gig RAM, decent comp, decent gfx card.
Prior to the RAM upgrade, it could take me ages to load.
Now, while my FPS didn't really improve (duh), loading of objects in space is FAR better.
Good times will always be remembered. Sleep well, old friends. |

Gundog,
Where do you live?
I've got a Geforce Ti4200 128MB gfx card I don't need so if you're in the UK I'd be happy to send it to you.
I've also got about 1GB of 333mhz DDR RAM you could have (assuming thats an improvement over your current setup).

That freaky lighthingy on the GUI cost ****loads.
They should set the ship models LOD's ranges dynamically so that you can in the graphics setting change the graphics detail just like all other games. (you basically change the lodÆs ranges, which means your ship will switch to a lower poly version at closer range then t0rfiFrans meant it to be. )
aye the client needs some lovin.

1 Gig of RAM will definitely help will all games - not just EVE. Less swapping means faster load time for levels/ships. The GUI is one of the reasons as some Moo members pointed out, it is rendered as 3D objects with alpha blending and that can decrease the FPS significantly if badly coded. CCP has to switch them to a single plane alpha blending ( you'd lose the sun lighting effect but frankly nobody gives a damn ) layer, to be honest...

In my exprience it is not the power of the PC that is the problem its Server/Client Lag my PC is a P4 3.2GHz Processor, 2GB DDR400 RAM, 120GB Serial ATA Hard Drive and Radeon X800 Graphics Card and i still suffer in larger battles from uber lag even with 2meg Internet Connection.

I have an Athlon XP 2500, 512 MB DDR Ram and a Radeon 9600, I think that should really be an okay system, not high-end but its sufficient for playing games like Far Cry with good graphics.
In Eve though, whenever warping/jumping/undocking and a lot of ships is around, it freezes for quite a while to load them.
I really DEMAND from CCP to do something about that, I was very angry when I lost 200mill in the T2 nerf but the only thing that ever brought me really close to cancelling my subscription is those unnecessary freezes (and I even haven't lost a ship due to it so far). Can't be so difficult to add an option to replace the ship models with 2D icons and it would make thousands of players very happy.

No problems - I'll send them on today by recorded delivery.
You should get them tomorrow.
The card is a AGP (8x) ASUS Ti4200 128mb V9280 - the drivers can be found here.
The RAM is DDR RAM 184-pin Samsung PC2700 (333Mhz) so it's basically only for AMD-compatible motherboards. I'll send it on just in case that's what you have.

God I am so sick of hearing the upgrade chant...when I bought this game the box, (which I still have 1 year after I bought it), states sys req to be : win 98, ME 2000 or XP ...processor P3 450 or higher..128 MB ram (256 if XP) geforce 2 or better, 56K modem or better. I have an xp1700+ with 392 MB ram, geforce 4 TI 4600 with 128 MB, and DSL connection. Why do I have framerates like slideshows in large battles I want to know...dont tell me that I have to turn off all the eye candy and sound and Chat channels to play the game promised on the box. I still pay every month, but it's crap sometimes. I have as much video memory as they require for system memory..that should be enough I would think..and I fully understand your feelings dude. I guess they maybe should have listed different req's for Combat also..the box obviously only listed req's for mining, researching and building :P ~TJ

No love for people that edit files for performance increases.
I don't even like people that turn the brightness up too high on FPS games.
I have a P4 1.6Ghz, 512ram, GeForce3(upgrade soonÖ), and WinXP Pro.. I wouldn't be caught dead in a fleet battle in EVE. Well yes I would, I just wouldn't be able to see what was going on.. By the time it finished loading space while coming out of warp, it would start loading the station environment at my clone station. I know this for a fact.
But I can play any new FPS games, with 30 other players around me, and it runs as smooth as a babies butt.
It's pretty obvious EVE runs way more processes than it needs to. So many things going on that are unnecessary. And i'm only talking about the things you can see.
CCP devs tend to add more code to cover up bad code. This is really bad for optimization and performance.
5 R&D Agents, 10months, Zero BPO Offers.. Onboard navigational [Planetary Avoidance] computer.

I honestly thought our frigates just locked your pod in time. I hate to see anyone lose something due to a lag spike. I think that BKG and the surronding areas needs some node love by CCP. Just ask Fupl about the fight at the station 2 nights ago where all of us got node dropped 2 times in one fight.
Btw I just play on a run of the mill $500 Dell with a P4 2.4 and 512M of ram and some video card i bought at bestbuy for $78 bucks Geforce 440 or something like that.
So I think it was more of a server problem than your pc problem

Node Death, Server Problems, ect.. These things affect everyone in the system equally. In most cases at least. These things wont give others an unfair advantage.
UK most likely experiences less lag than us US people though. So that will always be a problem. Tell everyone is fiber optic nStuff. |

Well my PC is due for an overhaul anyway, its a 1.4Gb Athlon with 256Mb RAM and a GF2 and i've marginally overclocked all three. That and i have so much spyware on it it's unreal. So when i get that new hardware into it (Cheers again Joshua, hey i might put that in my sig ) i'm gonna backup across my partition and purge my main disk with nothing back on it but EVE. With the 1Gb of RAM Joshua's giving me (I hear more of RAM being the problem than anything) and the purge i should run fine. I might buzz my Dad for a couple of components (CPU and stuff)he has that are marginally better than my present ones and more importantly havent been gamed to hell for 3 years. All in all EVE is a resource guzzler, and though i do wish they had even lower possible settings or a more efficient system i still love it. Now hopefully i can love it from PvP too.
Oh and with this upgrade i am holding my resignation from GODS and PA, many of the GODS guys made me shut my trap and just say i'd stay, apparently PvP isn't as important to them as my TS banter
To EVERYONE who has helped my in this, with advice, components (Did i forget to mention how much i love Joshua ), support from friends, and not turning this into the flamebait i feared it might become....
Cheers, from Sassinak all the way to Juduzz and Cursed, cheers guys no matter what we game we game the same community, thanks again --------------------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Angry Dan on 20/07/2004 22:35:34 Hey josh, that bit of generosity deserves a reward, if you ever go to Trillians or Rock @ the Arena, I'll buy you a pint.
I ran eve fine using intergrated graphics on a NForce 2 motherboard, Athlon 1100/100fsb and 512mb.
However, I did fond some handy hints. 1) Run eve on a seperate drive are partition to your windows install. 2) I've found lag is appalling if you don't get a 15Kbit pipe to upload through 3) Turning the colours option to 16bit does boost frame rates 4) Every in game window you open seems to reduce 1-2 fps, at least on my box (and it ain't no slouch). Try to keep the windows to Autoscanner, corp and local. 5) Clean the spyware off your system with Ad Aware (click the link) It does a pretty good job of killing spyware. ++++++++++++++++++++ CEO of the Space Munchkins. Fear my kneepads of allure!

Also try "Spybot Search and Destroy" it's also freeware, I use both Adaware and S&D, together they cover the gaps in eachothers libraries. http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp

Upgraded from 1800+ to a 3400+ recently. Did it help? Heck yeah. Load up faster, more FPS and less trouble with lag.
Dudes blanking? All they cause will be more lag because of client checking out the stuff files in a couple of weeks. You bet they will implement checkups on clients to catch cheaters. ___________________________ Favorite bumpersticker of the month: My head hurts! |
