I think your one of your problem is you focus on the material aspects of the holiday, instead of what the point really is. Family.
Really I think you hate the way the holidays make you feel, probably due to some personal/family related issues. If thats is indeed the case, then i do feel sorry for you, but really, the only thing/person that is stopping you from enjoying Christmas is yourself. Keep that in mind as you sit there wallowing in your hate and contempt on thursday morning.
I on the otherhand, am looking foward to spending the day with my family and friends, eatting, drinking, and carrying on, as us crazy italians do. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

The problem is not that its built upon anythign pagan. The problem is, it only exists because the catholics needed something flashier than the pagans.
I might be going out on a limb here, but the average pagan back then probably was more in touch with the universe than those feisty bishops and popes.
edit: if you want, you could say, it never was more than a poor PR stunt.
I'd have to say that they probably were more in touch. But the slight pagan tradition was stamped over by organised religion, which is a shame really.
Also before the change of calendar 1752 (for Britain and it's colonies), Christmas used to fall on what is now known as 5th of January.

You could say that in a twisted way... I spend a lot of time with my family to begin with, and it's all fine and dandy most of the time... but as soon as the holidays come, it's like everybody starts going berserk and it STOPS being about family and starts being about the holidays. If anything, holidays are the moments when I'm the least in touch with and people in general.

Lets not go overboard with glorifying the pagans here. Yes organized religion is crap, but only cause it's a group of humans. The other groups of humans were and are pretty crap too.
For instance little known fact about the native Americans, they freaking perfected torture. They had this one trick where they'd wet leather so it expands then strap it down tight around a guys head, then put him out in the hot sun. The leather tightens, guys skull is slooooowly crushed.

they also used that trick to make their tools work. I still use that trick for some things today, a friend of mine even -I **** you not- built a full suspension bike using an old ski and the wet leather trick.

yep, it's only 2 days till christmas and I haven't even begun to shop yet. I don't know what to get anybody. No wait, my little brother fixed it for me for some game he wants off of steam.
Every year it's the same damn crap. All brothers exchange video games or movies, get some clothes or maybe an electronic item from the parents (although for once in my life the clothes are actually a nice idea). Dinner at mothers on christmas eve, Dinner at fathers on christmas day, one of like 3 times the family is all together in the year).
I had to go to Cabela's yesterday to buy some Gun Oil. I was standing in line with my purchase looking around, at the faces of people who were holding their redneck presents, with tired faces, a 'I don't give a **** at this point' expression. The cashiers looked exhausted, I bought my cashier a chocolate bar which at least gave her a smile for 2 seconds. I went to the mall to look around for anything that might be nice for someone in the family. While not finding anything that may interest another family member I saw children just wanting to go home, babies crying, people overloading their arms with 30 bags of crap. It also took about an hour just to leave the mall parking lot.
I agree that christmas has lost it's meaning for the most part. Sure you get a little family time but the spirit of it is so commercialized it's not even funny anymore.

Meh, the holidays are gonna be rather nice i think.
I've just stayed away from stores and haven't really botherd with watching a lot of TV so i have successfully escaped most of the Christmas hysteria.
Christmas is only about family for me, and ratting, because the belts are so empty during the 24/25

Michael, are you some sort of American clone of me or something? This is pretty much how it is for me. My eating arrangements are a bit different but I'll be visiting the parents over a couple of different days.
I would be exchanging computer games with my brother, but I've said to him 'get your own bloody game when one comes out you really want, and I'll do the same', if not I'd be reduced to getting him something like Sonic Unleashed (my brothers 29, and i doubt he'd want that).
This Christmas has been the most relaxing for me because I've decided not to buy anything for anyone (except myself), instead I've been able to sit around on the weekend, or my days off, drinking beer/spirits/coffee, in the middle of the city, whilst watching other people rush around buying all their Christmas stuff.
And yes Christmas has become commercialized, and i think it can be summed up perfectly by the following quote from Bottom... (OK, maybe not the best example, but shows people doing stuff because it's "the done thing")
Eddie: Not sprouts! I hate sprouts! Richie: Oh will you stop whinging Eddie! Nobody likes sprouts. Eddie: Then why are we having them then? Richie: Because itĘs Christmas! =============================================

Since when was this news? First things the Catholic Church did was try to replace pagan holidays, traditions and festivals with Christian themed ones. Problem is they ended up mixing a bit, so alot of of Christian symbolism is ****ed atm. Jesus was actually born more near the Easter holidays than Christmas.
tbh, Christmas today is about commercialism and pretending to love your family, mostly with your wallet and undivided attention for a few days.

Undivided my ass. I take my laptop with me and get right to my games after the presents are delivered. My brothers bring a xbox and take over the tv in the back bedroom. We may each talk about our jobs for an hour but that's about it.

Don't get me wrong, I hate most holidays for the same reasons, but Christmas takes the top in all possible "fake joy" categories.

Last couple of years, people ask me what I want for Christmas, and I tell them to save their money and buy something they need, if I need help I'll ask for it, I expect them to do the same, and I'm not buying anyone anything except cheesy Christmas, which are still overpriced.

This thread is a very clear sign of how much my kids have changed my life, four years ago i would have agreed with your post Akita, but christmas for me and my family is about spending time together and enjoying a few days off before going back to the grind. Lifes what you make it as they say.

I'm a Christian, so I celebrate what the holiday represents, not because I think it's the actual date.
That said, here's how I enjoy Christmas:
1. I make an extra effort to be kind and encouraging to all of the overworked people I meet.
2. I don't buy gifts.
3. I avoid stores. Completely.
4. Because of the above, I don't hear any carols, so I sing them occasionally to myself when everything is quiet and the snow is falling outside.
5. I eat something nice I've picked out before hand, that I enjoy, and save any leftovers for later.
6. I live alone, so no one bothers me and I usually don't go anywhere for Christmas.
It's very nice.
