I hate it how everybody scours around to buy a lot of food they don't really need and will just end up spoiled. I hate it when everbody you visit expects you to sample from each of the foods presented, even if that alone would mean you'd end up with a full stomach from one household alone and loads of nausea in the evening. I hate it how everybody gives "thoughtful" presents to eachother that at best don't get returned to the store, at worst they end up directly in the trash... just freaking give the gift of cash-money, the universal gift, everybody loves it, nobody wants to return it. I hate it how everybody expects you to look joyous or whatever and try to cheer you up, ending up annoying you even more. I hate it how everybody pretends to be "in a holiday spirit" when most of them are in a self-induced tired and nerve-wrecked state... who the hell made you prepare all that food and put up all those decorations in the first place ?
Don't get me wrong, I hate most holidays for the same reasons, but Christmas takes the top in all possible "fake joy" categories.

I love how this year, not many people can afford opulent quantities of food. How this time people are forced to take greater deliberation over gifts, ones that may be more useful than merely a novelty.
I love how this year, I can enjoy it without over commercialisation like it has been past years. Maybe this time it will stick?

Out of context, could be a great quote. By me. About Christmas.

It's slightly down a notch from the past years, but not quite there yet. Maybe NEXT holidays, when we're knee-deep in recession... then finally, I could probably enjoy the holidays too

Do what I do and go out with your friends after "family time" and get drunk (or whatever suits you) and share stories. Makes it all worth it TBH.

I spent double my usual amount on presents, knowing that people wouldn't be willing to spend the money on themselves.
As for the holiday cheer. 49 hour delay at airport --> full of bile and hate, but in the holiday spirit, I haven't threatened to castrate anyone yet. But that could be because Im afraid of getting tasered like a Polish immigrant.

So you have not the slightest clue about the actual holiday? thats nice.
You know it doesnt have anything to do with jesus?
And staying in bed - that's exactly the problem. Because that tends to get granny sad, and we dont want sad grannies, now, do we?

yeah, because I need to know every cultural connotation and historical nuance of it just so I can go up to family (as you no doubt do) over the holidays like the irritating pedant you no doubt are and say 'heh, you know that this 'holiday' has nothing to do your so-called 'saviour' right? just so you know...' because that's a barrel of laughs isn't it? it's great to be right, way better than seeing family and all that bull****

Most of your complaints seem to be problems with the people, not the holiday.
And giving cash is a horrible idea because then you might as well just keep your own cash and have nobody give anybody anything.
In an ideal world people would know each other well enough to give a well thought out gift. In the real world people don't so they just buy something random. This is why I only buy gifts for my closest friends and they're all custom tailored to suit that person.
As for the food, nobody is forcing you to eat it. I simply refuse, say I'm on a diet or some such (which is usually true.) People don't mind round here. It helps if you're a bit overweight as it doesn't sound like a cop out. -- Distortion| Distortion 2 Preview |

More to the point, with most people treating holidays (in particular Christmas) as some kind of "who can fake joy and happiness better" contest or a "who buys more presents" contest instead of just, you know, taking some time off and relaxing with their families.

Yesterday as I was cruising through the city I saw an advertisement of some catholic organisation asking for donations.
Roughly translated it was
"Because it's Jesus' birthday"
Now that isnt a problem if it comes from some uneducated or ignorant sheeple, but it bothers me when it comes from a catholic organization - their roots started that holiday in EXACT that timeframe to get some cheap excuse for bloodshed.
Also, don't get me started on santa claus.
And yes, you have to talk about all that crap if you ever want to make it better.
As I said, nothing wrong with holidays, but why exactly do we need to bull**** ourselves to pull it off?

Because in Europe we sort of realised we don't need religion per say.
In America it's profits! profits! profits!
So in both there is bull**** because apart from a cultural and profit note, not enough people give a damn about it.

For me Christmas is a secular holiday to be with family and a little bit of rest and relaxation. There is absolutely nothing religious about the old pagan tradition it's built upon.
I must go now, to tie some cloth about the tree of a fresh water spring! A 1000 blessings from Minerva for the coming year!

The problem is not that its built upon anythign pagan. The problem is, it only exists because the catholics needed something flashier than the pagans.
I might be going out on a limb here, but the average pagan back then probably was more in touch with the universe than those feisty bishops and popes.
edit: if you want, you could say, it never was more than a poor PR stunt.

I think your one of your problem is you focus on the material aspects of the holiday, instead of what the point really is. Family.
Really I think you hate the way the holidays make you feel, probably due to some personal/family related issues. If thats is indeed the case, then i do feel sorry for you, but really, the only thing/person that is stopping you from enjoying Christmas is yourself. Keep that in mind as you sit there wallowing in your hate and contempt on thursday morning.
I on the otherhand, am looking foward to spending the day with my family and friends, eatting, drinking, and carrying on, as us crazy italians do. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

I'd have to say that they probably were more in touch. But the slight pagan tradition was stamped over by organised religion, which is a shame really.
Also before the change of calendar 1752 (for Britain and it's colonies), Christmas used to fall on what is now known as 5th of January.

You could say that in a twisted way... I spend a lot of time with my family to begin with, and it's all fine and dandy most of the time... but as soon as the holidays come, it's like everybody starts going berserk and it STOPS being about family and starts being about the holidays. If anything, holidays are the moments when I'm the least in touch with and people in general.

Lets not go overboard with glorifying the pagans here. Yes organized religion is crap, but only cause it's a group of humans. The other groups of humans were and are pretty crap too.
For instance little known fact about the native Americans, they freaking perfected torture. They had this one trick where they'd wet leather so it expands then strap it down tight around a guys head, then put him out in the hot sun. The leather tightens, guys skull is slooooowly crushed.

yep, it's only 2 days till christmas and I haven't even begun to shop yet. I don't know what to get anybody. No wait, my little brother fixed it for me for some game he wants off of steam.
Every year it's the same damn crap. All brothers exchange video games or movies, get some clothes or maybe an electronic item from the parents (although for once in my life the clothes are actually a nice idea). Dinner at mothers on christmas eve, Dinner at fathers on christmas day, one of like 3 times the family is all together in the year).
I had to go to Cabela's yesterday to buy some Gun Oil. I was standing in line with my purchase looking around, at the faces of people who were holding their redneck presents, with tired faces, a 'I don't give a **** at this point' expression. The cashiers looked exhausted, I bought my cashier a chocolate bar which at least gave her a smile for 2 seconds. I went to the mall to look around for anything that might be nice for someone in the family. While not finding anything that may interest another family member I saw children just wanting to go home, babies crying, people overloading their arms with 30 bags of crap. It also took about an hour just to leave the mall parking lot.
I agree that christmas has lost it's meaning for the most part. Sure you get a little family time but the spirit of it is so commercialized it's not even funny anymore.

Michael, are you some sort of American clone of me or something? This is pretty much how it is for me. My eating arrangements are a bit different but I'll be visiting the parents over a couple of different days.
I would be exchanging computer games with my brother, but I've said to him 'get your own bloody game when one comes out you really want, and I'll do the same', if not I'd be reduced to getting him something like Sonic Unleashed (my brothers 29, and i doubt he'd want that).
This Christmas has been the most relaxing for me because I've decided not to buy anything for anyone (except myself), instead I've been able to sit around on the weekend, or my days off, drinking beer/spirits/coffee, in the middle of the city, whilst watching other people rush around buying all their Christmas stuff.
And yes Christmas has become commercialized, and i think it can be summed up perfectly by the following quote from Bottom... (OK, maybe not the best example, but shows people doing stuff because it's "the done thing")
Eddie: Not sprouts! I hate sprouts! Richie: Oh will you stop whinging Eddie! Nobody likes sprouts. Eddie: Then why are we having them then? Richie: Because itÆs Christmas! =============================================

Since when was this news? First things the Catholic Church did was try to replace pagan holidays, traditions and festivals with Christian themed ones. Problem is they ended up mixing a bit, so alot of of Christian symbolism is ****ed atm. Jesus was actually born more near the Easter holidays than Christmas.
tbh, Christmas today is about commercialism and pretending to love your family, mostly with your wallet and undivided attention for a few days.

Undivided my ass. I take my laptop with me and get right to my games after the presents are delivered. My brothers bring a xbox and take over the tv in the back bedroom. We may each talk about our jobs for an hour but that's about it.

Last couple of years, people ask me what I want for Christmas, and I tell them to save their money and buy something they need, if I need help I'll ask for it, I expect them to do the same, and I'm not buying anyone anything except cheesy Christmas, which are still overpriced.
... it actually works, too. ... besides, I've said all I'm going to say. You're reading my sig now! Bwa!

This thread is a very clear sign of how much my kids have changed my life, four years ago i would have agreed with your post Akita, but christmas for me and my family is about spending time together and enjoying a few days off before going back to the grind. Lifes what you make it as they say.

I'm a Christian, so I celebrate what the holiday represents, not because I think it's the actual date.
That said, here's how I enjoy Christmas:
1. I make an extra effort to be kind and encouraging to all of the overworked people I meet.
2. I don't buy gifts.
3. I avoid stores. Completely.
4. Because of the above, I don't hear any carols, so I sing them occasionally to myself when everything is quiet and the snow is falling outside.
5. I eat something nice I've picked out before hand, that I enjoy, and save any leftovers for later.
6. I live alone, so no one bothers me and I usually don't go anywhere for Christmas.
It's very nice.

Well put. I hope the next few days pass by pretty quick so people can get back to normal. Seeing people fake their joy makes me feel uncomfortable since I can see them faking it.
In the mean time, I plan to enjoy some good food and drinks though. Might as well make the best of the situation.

remember. Christianity had to out compete the romans many many religions had holidays and celebrations around the end of the year (obviously, celebrating the new year)
more importantly, this season is also the time of the winter solstice for the top half of the globe (also known as the important half). every religion/weak minded sheeple that blindly made up neat stories to sleep at night celebrated the solstice and attached some type of deep meaning and/or awesome miraculous occurrence with this time of the year.
well except for the Alvinians which are completely 100% right and will totally smoke any of those other crap religions.
you can see that Christianity had plenty to compete with. ---------- Seasons Greetings and have a Happy Alvis Time |

Actually, the existence of Jesus of Nazareth is pretty much a historical certainty. Nobody's yet found the Roman census records for his birth or anything quite that conclusive, but his existence is not something that's argued at all among credible academics. He existed, and had a profound political and religious impact on the world.
What's debatable is this talk of him being the son of God, and the miracles and all that.
Personally, I view Christmas as a midwinter excuse to eat well, show my family how much I love and appreciate them (and receive the same in turn) and unwind for a little while. I certainly don't mind the commercialization or the pop culture that springs up in December. On the contrary, last weekend I played Tuba in an orchestral christmas concert in a church, and the next day spent three hours in my local town center playing christmas carols.
I don't understand how people can possibly hate it. It's like a big worldwide party - you have to be pretty damned misantrhopic to feel contempt about that, IMO. -

No, just injecting healthy scepticism needed when dealing with such important individuals from such a considerable amount of time. There is also the fact that while the Vatican now wouldn't use the Bible to control the masses, the declining Roman empire did have a damned good reason to 1800 years ago, hence my scepticism that their records are reliable on this.

If the commercialism of the holidays has got you down, do something a bit different. Like work a soup kitchen (homeless shelter). Seriously. It might actually turn into something you enjoy.
Besides, all the traffic is in a totally different part of town as people do the Blood In The Water shopping frenzy thing. It's actually pretty cool getting away from that nonsense to do something that actually has some meaning for someone.

I know in your emo-rage little world you would love for people to be eternally unhappy, but if Christmas makes most people happy (which it does...) then you should royally f**k off.
(Awaits the response of someone who, due to them spending much too long on the forum, thinks their thread and subsequent replies are correct, although billions of people celebrate and enjoy christmas)
PS. I welcome you having an opinion, but no need to share. Really no need.

Christmas doesn't (shouldn't, at least) need to exist.
People wait until Xmas time to show they care to their family by buying presents and being around them. They should show love and appreciation all the time, not just during "the holiday season."
It's the same as the following thought experiment:
You receive a letter in the mail from the doctor saying you have two weeks to live. What would you do in your time left?
The real question is, why aren't you doing that today?

Edited by: goodby4u on 26/12/2008 08:35:59 I love christmas, but my love for it has little to do with the deity itself nor gifts(though gifts are nice).
Its the idea of love for one's neighbor if but for 1 day out of the year, its about giving rather then taking good food nice company and the tradition of it all.
Sure, not many people get into the"christmas spirit"anymore, but personally I love getting into that mood if it is purely for myself.
PS:I am an ass 364 days out of the year, I care little about people's feelings(though wellbeing may be a little different)but on christmas im happy to give my share to ensure that everybody im around has a very merry christmas.
EDIT:For the poster above, I am doing exactly what I would do in my last 2 weeks past saying my goodbyes and maybe screwing with some people along the way.... Believe it or not I am honestly content with my life.
