Edited by: Infinity Ziona on 26/12/2008 06:06:18 After 8 years it probably should be.
EvE is old and clunky and full of patches and fixes. The playerbase is definitely ripe for a new game and giving them EvE 2, with a refined engine and more functional fleet fights is definitely smarter then just adding content / bug expansions?
Im pretty skeptical of games like Infinity but if they do manage to pull it off it probably wont be too pretty for EvE (although personally going back to 5k players peak would be awesome imo).
As a new player what would your money go to? A brand new sharded game where players can choose to join up on a relatively new server and with a comfortable learning curve or a very old (in mmorpg terms) single server game where players will need to compete with 5-6 year old players in a game whos interface is obscure and or downright confusing.

There is no need for "EVE 2". That's what patches are for. We are already on the second generation of graphics engine, and god only knows what generation of each individual subcomponent. Developing a total new game from scratch, while PROBABLY resulting in an overall better experience for everybody would be counter-productive, especially in the current global economic climate.

I never want to play on another sharded game. It's too cool knowing that I'm playing with every other player, be they Russian, Spaniard, or Pole. I enjoy playing with Poles. In fact, I'd say that playing with Poles is the highlight of my day. Mmm... Poles.

...no offense, but how much egg nog did you drink yesterday/today?
Eve is less "clunky" and more easily grasped than at any time in its history. Heck, it's much improved from even a year ago.
And as for the playerbase being "ripe" for a new game...well, I guess you haven't been studying the steadily increasing growth and amount of players online?
But I suspect that you are a troll.

My prediction of what would happen if Eve 2 came out.
Step 1) Vets of Eve log on and start skilling characters up. Step 2) Vets continue to play Eve, while just skilling up Eve 2 characters. Step 3) No one actually playes Eve 2, new players find it too "hard" or too empty, vets are busy playing Eve. Step 4) Eve 2 turns into "Skillup Online."

Arguably, you could say that we are playing a EVE 2 or a EVE 3 already, because no other developer than CCP, that I know of, that has opened up new aspects and added new possibilities with their game without re-releasing and marketing it as a new game.
And where do you get 8 years from? EVE came out May 2003 and no, beta development is hardly a justified argument! |

LOL ur all insane.
EvE is old and clunky.
Patches do != a brand new game - no matter how good at game design you are you'll always be limited by the initial coding and architecture unless you recode the entire game - EvE 1 will never = EvE II without a complete rewrite which will of course be exactly what Im suggesting.
Ask the average EvE vet about EvE and they'll usually tell you the game was more enjoyable earlier on in its development. I am a vet and I definitely feel that way.
We are not playing EVE 2 or 3 its definitely still clunky old EvE 1. Adding new models or a new interface does not make a new game.
8 years = 5 years now + the most likely 2-3 year it would take to develop the next installment of EvE Online.
Also Infinity is definitely nothing like EvE - Its a twitch based procedurally generated billion system no skill training newtonian physics modelled game. Pretty much the complete opposite of EvE Online. Ganking Buddhist Nun |

Edited by: Arthur Frayn on 26/12/2008 08:09:02 I remember hearing or reading an official CCP statement about how releasing an "Eve 2" sequel game is unnecessary because they're committed to improving and expanding Eve as far as possible to keep it on par with newer games in terms of technology, and also to continue to give us more toys to play with.

So what you are basically asking for is a "v2" of the previous incarnation, is a bug-free and sharded EVE Online... lolwut?
And I agree, don't bother us with your presence until your ability to make any sense has developed. |

Please, if EVE is to difficult for you then go play another MMO. EVE clearly isn't something for you.

Yes because having to wait multiple real time minutes to warp from one place to the other using my hyperdrive engine is something i'd pay for :(
No i think if i'd really have to pick a different game next to eve it would be jumpgate and not that game.
Also it's almost like you try to advertise this game in here, so please be gone, this game doesn't interest no one. Signature Locked. Please refrain from amending a moderated warning. Navigator |

New game? Sharding?
Seriously, Eve is like a good wine--gets better as the years roll by.
Making a new eve or adding shards eliminate most of the aspects that make eve unique in the first place.

No.
Well, if you keep playing a game that you admittedly don't enjoy, and insist that it be changed/replaced when more and more other people are enjoying it, what does that make you?

While it is always possible that EVE 2 could exist in a concept stage I doubt with their present staff its actually under development unless they abandon WoD.
EVE itself could benefit from some of the technologies being used in Infinity though.
The first of these would be implementation of the procedural method for planet generation. They have stated as a long term goal planetary landing/interaction. Perhaps its time for it.
You could also extend space beyond the current stargate systems. This space could be reached through wormholes (however that will create bottlenecks like low sec is). Another solution might be an Explorer class ship that could jump without the standard cyno field, possibly using gravity signatures of a system.
Sadly much like the ambulation I think some of these might be pipe dreams. The bigger the code for eve becomes the harder they'll be to implement.
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts.

To all those wanting "Eve 2", answer me this:
What would you change?
The graphics engine in Eve has been improved with Trinity (and supposedly improved again in March). The network engine was improved with Quantum Rise. This is already proof that CCP have a modular game engine that they can inprove elements of.
People cry for an Eve 2, when they actually want specific nerfs/buffs, or some other game imbalance resolving (noobs against veternas, the have-nots against the haves). Unless you can give fairly impartial and concrete reasons why Eve 2 is viable, it simply won't happen.
