This post is about a completely new version of EvE Online. It is not about sharding Eve Online. That is not being suggested.
I'm happy for you all to continue playing fleet slideshow's and clapping each other on the back when you 'win' cause the other side lagged out first. Enjoy posting your lagmails.
I however would like a new updated installation of EVE that has learned from the mistakes of EvE 1.
Something that:
Doesnt have stargate chokes or stations as the only combat areas. Doesnt have session changes. Doesnt have jump queues. Doesnt have POS the way they're implemented. Doesnt have super lagging blob wars. Doesnt have poor NPC AI. Doesnt have to rely on ancient bits of tightly coupled code. Doesnt have grids. Doesnt have flat rectangular bits of space called solar systems. . . . its a big list Does have brand new content Does have a brand new story line (it could be set in the past or future) Does utilize new hardware and software solutions Doesnt have to be sharded however the only difference between sharding and not sharding is with not sharding your taking away choices that players should be making.
One point to make before somebody comes on and says 'the players don't want that choice they want a single shard'. If this is true then adding another shard wont make your game-play less enjoyable cause no-one will use it right?. I suspect the real fear is your fear of not being there to be l33t and cool in front of them in your titan or carrier or whatever else it is you want to show off. People on another shard will have 0 effect on your gameplay. |

And all off that will CCP just suck out of their finger. Or magical fairy brings them on silver plate.
So, while you'll wait for your dream MMO for next couple decades, I'll play happily EVE. And maybe... CCP will rework some components then and there. Trinity, StacklessIO, Eve64 seemed to be good start. AFAIK whole cluster is undergoing massive hardware upgrade. Let's see, what future brings.

Originally by: Infinity Ziona One final note - Fear of Shards is rampant. You don't play EVE with more then a few hundred people at a time simply because the current architecture EVEN WITH the new technology patches they tried to plug into this clunky system just CAN NOT COPE with it.
CCP hasnt pulled off a single sharded system where 40k players can play against each other they can barely cope with a few hundred without special servers being utilised and even then its a slideshow.
Current TQ Population as I just logged in : 39,155
Funny, I logged in, I'm playing and the game works fine. You're completely wrong.
Originally by: Infinity Ziona The EVE system is a cluster of servers just like WOW or EQ or whatever the only real difference is they dynamically transfer you from one shard to another with a sometimes significant wait.
You obviously have no idea what a shard is in terms of the construction of an MMO.
Let me explain, a shard is not a server. A shard is a clone of an environment, which produces more than one identical game world. These game world are known as shards as they are not persistant with eachother, and cause and effect in one has no bearing on the gameplay in another.
They are typically used along with instancing when a game environment is not scalable to the number of players that are connected to the game an playing. For instance, there are hundreds of copies of Azeroth, all with their own names, which for scalability are hosted on different servers but operate on the same timeline side by side because of the sheer number of people playing World of Warcraft.
A "shard" has absolutely nothing to do with how the server's hardware is configured. Tranquility is made up of HUNDREDS of blades, that all work together performing different tasks such as hosting the market database and processing in space or in station information. While you're sat in a station buying Mining Laser II's, you may be connected to multiple servers during your transaction, all working together and communicating to host ONE environment.
A shard is an environment, or a clone thereof. A shard is not a "server", although many mainstream MMO players seem to think so due to the fact that unlike Eve many MMO developers choose to shard their games and host each one on a different server.
Originally by: Infinity Ziona new shard.
Finally, in relation to this : lol, no.. Go away.
Eve is the only single shard persistant MMO on the market where everyone plays together. It has a dedicated fanbase and following because of this, and CCP have stated outright that they never want to shard the game on a multitude of occasions.

There would be absolutely no need to shard EVE (except maybe to avoid gameplay issues like blobbing) if they would manage to implement dynamic load balancing, i.e. moving solar systems to less busy nodes when needed (as in any time, not just at DT).
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

I want to slap the OP so hard right now. Seriously.
- We are playing EVE2 & EVE3 & EVE4 right now, they're called major expansions.
- Ripe for a new game my ass. EVE might not be the most streamlined or bug-free experience out there, but CCP's whole angle on the MMO industry is create a solid product, and continually polish it. You think there are problems now, I'm sure it would be many times worse on a new version of EVE, just look at the early years of the game.
- While I'm sure as a new player it must be tough to get into EVE these days, what with the feeling that one has started way too late to be of any importance, and that there's no way to grind away up the ladder quickly. However, the bright side is that while EVE might be the better part of a decade in age, its playerbase is generally young, think the last playerbase statistics put players under a year or two at around 80% of the population. While there are some old grizzled vets out there, they're continually dying off, so relax.
- The grass is always greener on the other side.

Well. Those player controlled, so take those off.
It's the players that initiate combat on stargates, not the devs intending it. Super blob warfare? Again, player mind-set that More = Better.
Session changes? Haha you'll always have that. Dream on.

1. Consequence of poor game design. Gates and Stations are the only real areas that can be camped with any success.
2. See above.
3. Consequence of poor game design. More IS better.
As for session changes - no they are not mandatory to have in a game. As more powerful software, hardware and storage devices come out they'll be eroded and then vanish.

Warp Bubbles that can stop you cold mid-warp and can be planted on the path between gates = full of win.

yeah it would be. its been suggested since the issue of gate camping first came up but never been looked at.
If you ever played EQ on a PvP server you would zone into a zone (equiv jump into an system) and then run or ride to find a target. PvP could happen in 100% of the zone. In EvE its a fraction of a percent. Its like EQ with only zone in camping. Ganking Buddhist Nun |

Eve is fine as it is.
The only thign I have an opinion on is whether or not eve is overcrowded.
I personally prefer how it was way way back when the users:systems ratio was much much lower than it is now.
For me it created a feeling of actual distance and size, whereas now every gate/station/object you go to seems to be populated.
I dont want a single player game before some idiot suggests it, but I would be interested to know if CCP planned on the current number of systems supporting the users they now have?
