Edited by: Borgholio on 31/12/2008 22:42:36 Currently I'm running a GeForce 8400GS with 256mb, and it works fine. However due to Christmas, I now have $100 in Amazon gift certificates to spend and I'm considering upgrading. Based on the amount of money I have to spend, I can afford either a GeForce 8600GT with 512mb or a GeForce 9500 with 1gb. At first glance the 9500 is the better choice due to twice as much video memory, but I've read some reviews that say the GeForce 9 series is actually crap. Opinions, anyone? Thanks! ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

the difference is somewhat marginal, though I'd say go with 9500 as it does distinctly perform better (I had the former, and now have the latter)

I just put in an 8500 w/ 1gb (they also make an 8500 w/ 512) and it runs Premium superbly. Whatever you get I'd recommend going with the gig instead of the 512.
The 9000 series cards are also a fair bit longer than the 8000 series. If the main power hookup to your motherboard is located on the same relative x-axis as your video card port you may not be able to fit the card in at all. That's what happened to me (got a 9600 a few weeks ago.) Unfortunately the manufacturer doesn't list physical dimensions of the cards anywhere that I was able to find. Make sure you save your receipt.
Oh yeah that reminds me, make sure the power source you're using can handle the new card as well. 8500+ benefits from a 400W source, and the 9-series requires it IIRC.

go for the 8600 and wait for the next line of cards after the 9s.

I found an 8600 with 1gb ram but in the name of all that's holy, look at the size of that heatsink!

Looks about as meaty as my 8800GTX its got a beast of a heatsink the size of 2 internal HDD's and yeah its a very tight fit in this case i'm planning on upgrading the case before buying a bigger card --------- Rally Against Evil Site[/center]

Well I just bought the 9500. I read some really thorough benchmarks that show it being equal to or better than the 8600gt in all aspects. Yarr incoming. :-P ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

Just be wary of lower end cards with the 1024mb ram sets as they are not all created equal.
Yes they have more ram and that would be good right? Well no, not always. Sometimes the ram is clocked at a lower data rate or even worse an older generation (say 1024Mb GDDR2 at 600Mhz instead of 512Mb GDDR3 at 750mhz).
Its not always the case but something to be wary of. I'll generally take the lower amount but faster ram over more but slower.

Geforce 8600 is just fine for this game. Other games go with the newer one.

what about those ATI cards that state things like DDR6 memory. Are those just pulling my leg? They have always bothered me.

9800GT is ~$100 atm (same thing as 8800GT, and soon to be renamed to 240/250), and it runs all modern games just fine. Not sure why you'd wanna get anything less, its not like you're going to be saving much money.

For the record a mate of mine runs the Premium content just fine on an old 6800GT.

Get a 9600gt, it's $100 and is about 1.5-2x as powerful as the other 2 cards you linked.

8600 runs Premium well at lower resolutions. Got an 8600GTM on my Laptop and it runs Premium smoothly at 1280x800, though I have to disable shadows...
I then tried plugging it into a 22" Monitor and running it at 1680x1050. Didn't like that at all.
Desktop has an 8800GT and the performance boost over the 8600 is massive. Absolute max settings inc. Shadow quality, 1680x1050 res and I still get 60 fps
No point getting a crappy card like the 9500 or 8600 unless they're going really cheaply (I got a 256mb 8600GT for ú6.49 some months ago, yay for clearance sales) since they only barley do what you want and at retail value still go for quite a bit. 9600GT and 8800GT are much better choices IMO.

Cancelled my order for the 9500 and just purchaced a PNY 9600 512mb card instead. When it arrives in about two weeks, I shall be able to have maximum FPS during those intense Omber mining sessions... ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

Why are EVE players such cheapskates when it comes to graphics cards? For god's sake at least go with a 9800GT it's not that expensive, and it will play damn near everything just fine, including Crysis.

Or, you could distance yourself from the nVidia fanboys and actualy get a good graphics card. ATi 48x0 series beat the crap out of everything price-performance wise. ----
