Got a GeForce 8800 GTX OC with 768 MB of GDDR3.
It is pretty f'in incredible...
but then it melted a few months ago and I had to get a new one.
Other than that, no game has ever made it stutter on max settings.
Dunno the current price. ---------------------------------------------------

Originally by: Splash Whale Or, you could distance yourself from the nVidia fanboys and actualy get a good graphics card. ATi 48x0 series beat the crap out of everything price-performance wise.
You notice what cards the OP is talking about? Then notice most of the recommendations hes getting? 4800 series own this generation, but not at all price points and not the one discussed here. 4830 is roughly equivalent to 9800 GT and costs slightly more, which is probably why its not worth mentioning. 4850 is a great card, but its double what price of what the OP bought.

Edited by: Korirnna on 01/01/2009 17:27:34 Don't be stupid. Buy whatever is currently better. Right now, ATI's 4800 series is better. Next time, maybe Nvidia will be better, so then you can get that. There's no reason to be brand-loyal.

My 9600 arrived yesterday and although I'm quite pleased with performance, I think I'm missing something. Sitting in station in premium or classic I don't seem to get more than 100 - 110 fps. During a rather large fleet fight today I got as low as 9 fps when I zoomed in on about 200 ships. Even with the low fps it was still fairly steady, not very jerky...but somehow I feel that I should be getting better performance. What could I be missing? Are there any simple tests to see if my card is in fact working the way it should? ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

i have a nvidia 9800 GX2, with two cards in one, don't go for it... As any multi GPU cards it has image rendering issues, the picture randomly tears, sometimes bottlenecks in performance reveal themselves.
Yes it has higher FPS than single processor card, like 9800 GT, but it comes at the cost of stability and compatibility. It is always the issue wit drivers too. It's hard to update the drivers without ruining your Windows installation, driver setup may go wrong and you'll have to format your system.
I don't like the trouble of DUAL GPU card. I should have gone for 9800 GTX or x280... or whatever.

Well I'm wondering about my card. I played around a bit and my max FPS was about 130 docked. Is that decent for a 9600gt or should it be higher? |

You know why a lot of people don't mess with ATI cards? Because you ALWAYS have issues with them! BSOD, PC crashing, driver problems. Most of the time, you don't get that with Gforce cards.
Every game I see a new game come out there are always a page or two of posts about ATI and video problems. EVE was no different. Guess what. Gforce cards loaded it up and away we played :)

OR you could stay away from the very likely self-destruct timebombs NVidia-powered cards made in late 2007 and 2008 are, and go for something that actually DOES HAVE A PI LAYER instead, so doesn't suffer from that chip packaging *cough* "oversight"...

Personally Im using a 9800GTX+OC now, and I've gotta say the performance is almost as good as the new 9800 GX2 or even the GTX 200 series.

Make sure to keep shadow quality low (it's barely noticeable, but has a large performance hit). Of course make sure you have 2GB of RAM in your computer. Maybe the problem is an old CPU? If you have a single core CPU that might explain it.
I have an 8800gt (your card is about 90% as fast, should perform closely). I get 250 FPS in space at 1900x1200, with everything on highest. Make sure you have the latest drivers installed. The only difference I see is that my CPU is a quad and runs at 3.6 Ghz, and I have 4gb of ram. (but keep in mind eve wont use all of my quad, and only needs 2GB of RAM)

That sounds like anecdotal evidence. I can just as easily say I've been using ATI cards for years and haven't had any problems (which is true). |

I am running a Pentium Dual Core 2ghz chip and 2gb RAM. I can't imagine that would be the bottleneck. :-/ |

my 8600GT died in the middle of a hauler run a couple weeks ago, so I did my research for a replacement and this is what I found:
- GeForce 8800 series got renamed to 9800 (yes, it is exactly the same card) - 9600 is the only of the 9xxx series with a new chip, and it performs only 10% less than 8800/9800
Not sure about 9500 but anything below 9600 (or 8600 if going for 8xxx series) is usually severely crippled compared to it.
I bought a 9600GT and now get twice the FPS compared to the now defunct 8600GT with all 3 clients running.
If in a budget a 9500 may do but there is likely a huge difference in performance to the 9600. Go to tomshardware or anandtech and do a search on 9500GT reviews. --- "I live in Los Angeles, where driving is non-consensual pvp" - Arric Rohr |

I seriously need to upgrade
Im running a 7800GT, an athlon 64 3700 2.21ghz and 2gig ram.
I also need a new monitor. I run premium ok, but since QR have been getting the random crash bug thing that a quite a few have been complaining about. I cant really play longer then a couple of minutes without a crash. It ran fine prior to QR

Try going into the Nvidia Advanced settings and switiching on Triple Buffering and Vertical sync. This will 'lock' the card to a max 60fps, sounds odd to do but it may help the busier moments.
Also what quality/peromance settings are you running the card at? If you have it all at best quality it will grind.

I'm running at lowest quality / highest performance from the Nvidia control panel. In EVE I am running classic with all effects and such turned off. ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |
