Like a few people have said in this thread i start my ship name off with HMS and then what ever takes my fancy really at the time For instance my Salvaging ship is called HMS Hoover.

Didn't the Scooty Puff Jr. have a serious design flaw?
I used to name my Battleships after my wife, but then they would get blown up and she would start accusing me of doing it on purpose to get back at her cause she doesn't like it when i play eve.
Now I just look at them and decide based on role and look, and what I am drinking at the time. Be surprised how many Old no.7's and Scotch on the Rocks I have spread about.

Like many others out there, I like to 'borrow' my ship names from Iain M. Bank's excellent works of science fiction. Hence names like:
Yawning Angel (Badger)
Gravitas Free Zone (Merlin)
Liveware Problem (Drake)
Killing Time (Harpy)
Just a shame that EVE only allows so many characters for your ship name, so I can't use other favourites like "What Are The Civilian Applications?" and "Frank Exchange of Views."
If I ever have a freighter, it's getting to be called the Sleeper Service.

I name most of my ships, a few like my shuttle or some of the lower rank T1 Frigs I don't bother to name.
My Rifter is named the Hellbilly Choppa.

My Minmatar ships are named after Native American chiefs/warriors: Cochise, Geronimo, Sitting Bull.
My Caldari BS's are named after Apache tribes/individuals: Coyotero (a vicious band of Apaches) and Mangas Coloradas(Red Sleeves, a warrior).
My other ships are named after either function,Norse mythology, or brilliant humor. For example my Mammoth is named "Tusk".

Naming a ship the Hood is just asking for it... after all, remember the Hood :)

Dragonnames from Dragonriders of Pern.
With blue/green/brown/bronze matched to the appropriate ship class, gold is reserved for capitals I'm yet unable to fly.
Though I am now getting the ability to fly other races and thinking of keeping the dragonnames restricted to Gallente.

Ships i name in the memory of my first corporation.
They usualy are ''Obnoxious mans Raven'' or if the name doesnt fit ''Obnoxious mans Ship''
and when im frisky i name them after SGA/SG1`s ships

I have a little system for naming whatever I fly: <Actual ship name> <Character initials>-<Three digit number>/<Two or three letters that indicate its purpose>
So for example, my Bestower (which for me is a "Cargo Vessel") is named: Bestower DT-501/CV
Not at all clever or entertaining, but I like the uniform naming for my ships and I'm never ever lost for a name.

not only do i name my ships all my more permanent ones get called by name.
My current ship naming convention is email style :)
Muninn = [email protected]
Rapier = [email protected]
Huginn = [email protected]
my broadswords all have been named using highlander references

Anything I think of, from last names of people I've known IRL, to geographic features on the planets (Mercury to Mars), star names, or just generally good names from the English language.
I do have a tendency to use one-word names, though, nothing fancy like "Justified Atrocity" for me.

I always name my ships random things. I only change them when travelling through 0.0. I'll pick a stargate name and change it to my ship name. It does confuse some :)

I have several different naming schemes I use.
Sometimes I name them based on the general appearance of the ship, sometimes I give them just a random, cool-sounding name.
Lately though, I've been using song titles and Lyrics for name inspiration. So many songs have really cool sounding titles and lyrics, and I just abscond them for my own.

i go for a ship look name
as most of my ships are battleships and are fleet issue i useually have
EXE FS ( and for my apoc ) is something like longbow as it my sniper
my own personal ships which are my own fit are
EXE PS light for my absolution as it rather a bright ship
